  1. I was disappointed in this episode because I dislike aggressive ignorance -- in this case the many incorrect statements/jokes about vasectomies. Had hoped that this show would be more intelligent than that. I generally find Jake tedious anyway, but I adore Holt.
  2. Please excuse if we are insufficiently observant, but some of us do not recall Mal wearing unusually tight pants. Maybe someone would be so kind as to post a link to a picture for our edification?
  3. We expected Vance's lung problem to have something to do with toothpicks.
  4. Might be fun if they got Dule Hill to play the person who trains Penny, since his "Psych" character was a pharma rep. I don't usually comment on hair etc., and I think Penny's short cut looks good, but I'm baffled by the "blond in front, brown in back" look. Does Penny/Kaley think nobody can see the back of her head? I have seen this color dichotomy on other people and it looks odd to me.
  5. The first episode I ever saw was the one with Blinky the three-eyed fish. It's still one of my favorites, and I enjoy when the fish has cameos in other episodes. What was the episode in which Comic Book Guy steps out of his store, sees something disastrous (mushroom cloud?), and says "Oh, I've wasted my life"?
  6. Wonder if they're using it for the comeback episode. (See the ACD story "The Empty House.")
  7. I wish the show had gone some other way instead of to PBS.
  8. For anyone new to this -- census information did not necessarily come from the people listed. If the family was not home, the census taker might have asked neighbors, who often did not know the correct names, ages, etc.
  9. Thank you, Brattinella. I couldn't understand half the dialogue (although I watch a lot of British dramas) but it didn't look enjoyable.
  10. Good post, Sasha. The LDS website is https://familysearch.org/ Lots of information there. Recommending: http://www.cyndislist.com/ "A comprehensive, categorized & cross-referenced list of links that point you to genealogical research sites online." Unfortunately many people nowadays are hiding the same types of stories. Makes a genealogist think "If you only knew what our great-great-granddaddy did …."
  11. For anyone curious about David Suchet's ancestry, his "Who Do You Think You Are?" episode is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBTgkKgt2ss (has links to episodes for other actors too)
  12. If you know your ancestors back to before the Revolutionary War and wonder whether they had royal ancestry, here's a good book: Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States, by Gary Boyd Roberts. http://www.americanancestors.org/Product.aspx?id=21787 Your library may have it. The show didn't mention that most royal and "noble" lines are pretty well known, while others are not. By the time you get back 10 generations you have a lot of ancestors. When they followed (say) Valerie Bertinelli's line back, the chart had a lot of spouses with no ancestry listed. Out of thousands of ancestors at a given generation, it's not surprising to find a prominent one. A large proportion of people with European ancestry are descended from Charlemagne, a.k.a. "Chuck the Prolific." maraleia, marriage age in the US varied geographically. In New England, brides were usually at least 20. In some parts of the south, age 14 was not unusual. Ancestor names: One of mine was a doctor named Comfort Starr. Good name for a doctor.
  13. That is more or less my preferred order too. Sheldon is OK if we set the rules carefully. Luckily I can't drive, so that's one less way Sheldon could try to exploit our friendship. Raj can be fun and helpful, and maybe I could encourage him to be less gross. Leonard seems to need a lot of support because he's so insecure. Howard is much less skeevy now, but he tries to get out of doing his fair share (like laundry).
  14. Speaking of The West Wing, it could be fun if they could get Allison Janney to play Gibbs's next redhead, maybe in the series finale.
  15. Did they say what happened to the third wife (JTF's ancestor)? I thought they just said she was not in other records. So maybe she died. I hope they at least looked for a death record.
  16. In "The Big Four" I don't understand how Poirot faked his death, or at least how the police were fooled. Looked as if he went to the flat, tossed an explosive in, and ran. But any number of people could have seen him run away, and no one mentioned finding a body. Did Agatha Christie really write this? If so, did it make sense in the book?
  17. Sundays are too crowded already and not everyone has recording capability. I just hope Fox will have each episode on line the next day.
  18. All sorts of things might happen. Did Castle autograph a stack of books before the wedding? Those would become extra valuable when he is believed dead, and someone might break into the loft to look for them. Burglars often take advantage of weddings and funerals, when residents won't be home.
  19. Since there isn't a music/sound thread: At the end of the episode, just before the music starts, there is what sounds like Morse code, which would be appropriate. Is it Morse code? If it is, what does it say?
  20. Yes, the teen tournament tends to have easy questions. So does the teacher tournament; I find that disappointing.
  21. What is the range of time Jeopardy is broadcast? In other words, when should I avoid reading here so I don't get spoiled? I'm in the eastern time zone and see Jeopardy from 7:30 to 8 PM. Someone mentioned seeing it at 3:30 IIRC but I don't know what time zone that was. adTHANKSvance!
  22. I don't know about Britain, but in the US in the early 1900s and earlier, it was not unusual for a child to be given the name of a parent or older sibling who had died. Often the names had been used for several generations in the family, It was seen as a continuation of the legacy and a tribute to the deceased relatives.
  23. I hope there will be a second season. Pretty please! At least the ad for the DVDs of season 1 said there will be lots of extras. Available tomorrow!
