Speaking of accents, I find it refreshing that JLM uses (what I assume is) his own accent, rather than pretending to be an American like the leads of House and The Mentalist. Americans can understand other accents, really!

halwideman, I don't read tumblr, but if you are referring to people who say it's "adorable" that Castle is so much taller than Beckett, I'm inclined to agree with you. I think it's practical for a couple to be close enough to the same height that when they dance, each one can see over the other's shoulder.

Most people with European ancestry really are descendants of Charlemagne. He lived about 1200 years ago and had 18 children. In genealogical circles he is sometimes called "Chuck the Prolific." I liked the reminder that all people are related, even if we can't find out exactly how.

The DA plots are full of "Had I but known"s -- sad occurrences that could have been prevented if someone had told someone else something. This trope is common in sitcoms (unfortunately) but in dramas it quickly becomes repetitive and predictable. I am pretending that we are watching Downton Mental Hospital, including the hallucinations of the inmates.

Sherlock's haircut reminds me of Gibbs on NCIS, and his buttoned-up shirt reminds me of Monk. Gibbs and Monk both live by strict rules. I think Sherlock's appearance is a hint that he does too, even though his rules may not be obvious to others.

I'm in a fiction writing group. If someone submitted some chapters of a novel, with essentially the same scenes in several chapters, we would ask (politely at first) that he stop wasting our time and write something different. If he then submitted more chapters, with the same scenes yet again, we would make it clear that he was in the wrong group, and suggest therapy for whatever problem he was trying to work out.

When we found out that Kitty splashed acid on Gruner, we were a bit surprised she didn't castrate him too.

Speaking of social events, I would have liked to see the fundraiser for the scholarship Castle set up in memory of Beckett's mother. They would have dressed up for that. Maybe it's time for a second fundraiser event?

Hoping that (1) Michael Gregson and the Russian's wife have run away together and are having fascinating spy adventures, and that (2) from now on we can follow them instead of the dreary repetitive doings at Downton.

Several seasons ago, Mrs. Patmore had vision problems and had surgery. IIRC we were not told exactly what the problem was. I guessed it was cataracts. Cataract surgery was available at the time, but she would have had to wear thick glasses for the rest of her life, which she is not doing. Is there another logical explanation, or is this another thing we're supposed to overlook?

This episode was presumably named after the ACD story "The Illustrious Client," which has a character named Kitty Winter. I don't see much connection except that in both, the bad guy scarred Kitty. We haven't heard about an illustrious client in the episode, and the plots are different. This actually interfered with my viewing of the episode because I was looking for connections and not finding any.

A friend gave a party to which guests brought gag gifts, including some homemade Downton Abbey items. If I had thought of it in time, I could have used a brown paper bag to make a Downton Abbey diaphragm case.

I posted comments similar to this in the Small Talk thread, which might be a more findable place than an episode thread. Not that this show gets a lot of comments.

Have we seen Isobel interacting with her grandson George? I don't recall her even mentioning him much, maybe because George is the child of the unmentionable Matthew.

The State of the Union is coming up, so here's this from "He Shall from Time to Time" -- Bartlet: "And how do we make the American dream of opportunity a reality for all? I came to this hallowed chamber one year ago" - and I see we're spelling 'hallowed' with a pound sign in the middle of it. Sam: We'll fix that. Bartlet: The pound sign's silent? Leo: Move on, Mr. President. Bartlet: "I came to this hallowed chamber one year ago on a mission: to restore the American dream for all our people, as we gaze at the vast horizon of possibilities open to us in the 321st century." - Wow, that was ambitious of me, wasn't it? Sam: Leo. Leo: Let's take a break. Bartlet: We meant 'stronger' here, right? Sam: What's it say? Bartlet: "I'm proud to report our country's stranger than it was a year ago?" Sam: That's a typo. Bartlet: Could go either way.

Glad to hear it. I wish it weren't one of three shows that I want to see that are on at the same time, and I wish that I could record shows, and I wish F*X would let us watch on line the next day. But bottom line, good ratings mean more episodes, so yay!

Rainbow is a doctor, who IIRC works at a hospital, not a 9-to-5 clinic. Hospitals run 24x7 and need doctors and other personnel working at all times. Likely Rainbow had to plan ahead to get MLK day off, and there's a good chance she had to agree to work some other holiday in exchange. So why was there such a big deal about whether Dre would get the day off, but nothing for her? I would have expected at least a line from her about it.

Can we expect the young man who moved the horse to become a recurring character? He sounded as if he could be useful to Abe.

I find "Genealogy Roadshow" a bit frustrating because they give the answers without explaining how they found them. For viewers who might have similar stories in their ancestry, it's encouraging but not necessarily helpful. Is there a "behind the scenes" article about "Genealogy Roadshow"? It's fairly obvious that they get people's questions, do the research, and then invite them in to hear the results. But I would like to read or see more.
