  1. These ladies are athletes. They have a scoring system. They have competitions. Of course it's a sport!
  2. It makes me CRAZY when they serve out or into the net! Just giving away points!
  3. I'm glad to see Bela so animated; I think many of us were concerned for his health, but he seems to be doing pretty well!
  4. Vote here: http://previously.tv/television/mary-carrillos-badminton-rant-vs-the-bluth-family-chicken-dance/
  5. That "Coogan law" is a California state law, so it would only apply to money earned in California.
  6. Hoss's "hair" (if you can call it that!) was awful too - . I don't know why they couldn't get him a decent hairpiece.
  7. I went to the synchro prelims in '96 in Atlanta. I didn't know ANYTHING about the sport, but the people seated around us were experts and happy to explain things, like when they put their legs up out of the water, look for the height above the water line - the higher the better. Just try holding your breath when the swimmers go under. Even sitting relaxed on my couch, I can't do it. I remember on an interview with one of the teams years ago, the interviewer asked "how long can you hold your breath?" They said they didn't know (!), so they did it right then and timed them. I think it was over 3 minutes, and they didn't act like they were passing out at the end; they just gave a little "phew" and let out their breath. Amazing!
  8. My power went out right after Wever's routine, and I missed the rest of the competition! Did you all hear me scream? I guess they'll show it tonight, but boy am I pissed.
  9. According to this, Jennifer Kessy took a break to have a baby. http://olympics.nbcsports.com/2014/11/17/jennifer-kessy-emily-day-beach-volleyball-olympics/ I read somewhere that Walsh-Jennings was 5 weeks pregnant at the 2014 Olympics.
  10. I always thought the show was filmed with an audience. There might be some scenes that are filmed outdoors that they add a laugh track.
  11. From what I have observed, Gabby seems to be a person who keeps her feelings internal. In the stands, she can do whatever she wants, have whatever feelings she wants.
  12. I didn't see it, but it WAS raining so maybe it was a drop of water on the camera lens ;-)
  13. Well, Australia gave the US men's team a scare - Australia was up by 5 at halftime. With less than a minute and a half to go, the US was only up by 4. The Aussies had to start fouling, and the US ended up winning by 10.
  14. Rhythmic Gymnastics is like witchcraft - I just don't know how they can do it!
  15. And then they use safety pins to stick those ugly paper numbers on the back ... you'd think they could make that more streamlined. It just ruins the look. (yeah, I'm shallow)
  16. I wish I could explain the libero simply; basically the libero is a back court defensive specialist. They stay in the back row the entire game and cannot block, attack (hit the ball over from a position above the net), or set an attacker from in front of the attack line. I don't mind rally scoring too much, although I agree with what you said about "it seems wrong"! I guess I "tolerate" it. But once in a game before rally scoring, my team was behind 3-14, where 15 points was game. We came back and WON that game. There's just no way a team can make that kind of comeback with rally scoring.
  17. I don't know what the coverage is like in other countries, in the US they are showing a lot of US basketball, and I really don't need to watch another basketball game on television. I want to see sports that are only on television every 4 years. The US games aren't even exciting.
  18. I posted earlier that I was at the '96 games in Atlanta. One think I remember is how crazy fun the Brazil fans were. Everyone was talking about "those crazy Brazilians". There was one guy we saw everywhere - he must have weight 350 lbs and he always wore a bright yellow shirt. Then there were 2 guys who wore the SAME shirt - I mean, one shirt with 2 neck openings.
  19. I hope it's funny for all of us who don't know the "New Girl" characters. I've never watched the show.
  20. Well, I became an Aly fan yesterday... she looked great and I hope to see her on the podium with an all-around medal! (and team and floor!)
  21. Young women that age just hug a lot anyway. When 2 girls meet up in the mall, they hug. So I don't think it's fake; I think it's just part of the culture of that age.
  22. Just a few differences from when I played (in the 80s-90s): Rally scoring The server can stand anywhere on the back line - they used to be relegated to the back right foot digs are allowed - when I played any time the ball touched you below the waist it was a dead ball incidental net touches are allowed net balls are allowed on serve libero position The up ref signals are different. It used to be "point to the floor to show ball down or raise hands to show out of bounds, then show point or side out." Of course that's mostly due to rally scoring. There's probably some other stuff I can't think of right now.
  23. I'm pretty ignorant in general about gymnastics, but I don't have a problem with the scoring system. I don't think it's confusing at all; a base of degree of difficulty and adjustments for execution. It's like diving or figure skating.
  24. I went to the 2nd week of the '96 Olympics. We saw track and field (saw Michael Johnson; he was so easy to pick out due to his posture running), baseball, women's basketball and volleyball (we saw Cuba and Brazil get into a fight!), the gymnastics exhibition, and synchronized swimming prelims. Actually I enjoyed the synchro best because I knew the least about it but the people around us were very knowledgeable and explained so much about it that I became a fan. Now every time I watch I try to hold my breath as long as the swimmers do, and even from my comfortable couch I can't do it.
  25. If you go to Google and enter "Olympic Games Rio 2016" some stats come up with a green header bar. If you click on the green bar you get various categories of results. I've found it useful today. Edited to add: well, now the green header bar isn't coming up. I dunno...
