  1. Finally got some word on whether or not YJ will get a third season via Netflix: Keep it up fans! It can still happen!!
  2. How do you know Bundy did that? I think it was the informants/government suckups. I work in media - and I know not to automatically trust what they tell you and certainly not the government narrative of events.
  3. Except for those pesky informants. The entire affair was a joke when you realize half of the group were informing for the feds. Bundy and his family are not terrorists. They are being targeted by the government because they want their land for solar panels (Harry Reid's son Rory is a lobbyist for a Chinese energy firm) as well as uranium on the Hammond land in Oregon. I can't wait for the federal humiliation to continue when Bundy is acquitted in Nevada. I can only hope the family of Levoy Finnicum gets justice one day.
  4. Secretariat being the first horse in 25 years to win the Triple Crown. (1973) Bobby Riggs vs Billie Jean King (The Battle of the Sexes match) (1973) When the Brooklyn Dodgers won the World Series (1955) (Who's A Bum??!!) Non sports: The Monkees series finale ("Mijacogeo", aka "The Frodis Caper" - 1968) - which was the trippiest of all the episodes and did not try to hide the fact that Frodis was really The Monkees having Frank Zappa and Tim Buckley on the show (1968) - particularly when Zappa and Mike Nesmith switched roles and played each other for laughs! Hurricane Camille - live non stop coverage (1969) Lucy Ricardo's pregnancy announcement ("Lucy is Enciente" - 1953)
  5. I've been thinking about an unusual reboot - of a show that most would figure is un-rebootable: The Monkees! Hear me out: I love the original series with all my heart and have just about every scrap of Monkee music available! The show went down in history as unique in many ways - not the least of which was being the first to be cross marketed (TV/Radio/Music/Concerts/Film) and even chugging along 50 years later! All the while gathering new generations of fans and at least two generations of musicians who actively claim their music as a strong influence! However, my reboot idea is not to try to repeat the guys' outrageous antics (remember the debacle of the New Monkees back in '87?) . Instead, it would be to create an alternative universe Monkees. A more realistic group of guys who form a band in 1965 California and strive to make it big. All the while, we get to know more about the era and the environment of the Sunset Strip music scene. Based on my research and some recollections from those who had been there, there was a lot of musical upheaval with tons of bands trying to jockey for position with that unique sound that wasn't part of what the industry was pushing at the time. Plus there was folk music (The Troubador held "Hootananny Nights" weekly), the origins of country rock (which artists like Mike Nesmith would pioneer later on), surf bands, etc. There's a lot to work with plot wise with the turmoil of seeking fame in a competitive field, financial struggles, and trying to keep from being cheated by unscrupulous managers/publishers/record labels, and all the while being considered an outlier even amongst outliers. Plus, we could flesh out the characters more. In the original series the guys used their real names and their characters were extensions of their real life personalities. In a reboot, we can root the characters in those base personalities and grow them to more realistic types. Plus, their names could be a takeoff of those of the original characters/actors: Mike Nesmith becomes Michael Blessing (a pseudonym Mike used early in his career before joining The Monkees). Micky Dolenz becomes Micky Braddock (the stage name Dolenz used as a child actor) Peter Tork becomes Peter Thorkelson (His real surname - Tork was his nickname during his Greenwich Village days) David Jones becomes David Armstrong [Jones]: (In the original series, Davy's character often introduced himself with the middle name of Armstrong even though it wasn't in reality) Unlike the original series, we could create an in-universe origin story for the guys as well!
  6. I wasn't sure where to put this but I guess this is as good a place as any since it involved women and aging. I know that aging is a bit different than it used to be - people are living longer and more active lives, and the number attached to your age is becoming just that. A number that is less relevant than in the past and yet there are times when I bristle over what is considered "old" in TV and film. I happened to catch an episode from the first season of Facts of Life (1979). In an early scene, the male headmaster walks in with a female administrator. They have an argument over pushing curfew back for the students since a dance was coming up. At some point age gets mentioned and the female administrator is asked how old she is. She reluctantly responds she's 32. 32? They acted as if she were way older than that! Since when is/was 32 the end of everything or something not to be admitted to by an adult professional?
  7. Since I didn't make it clear earlier, I'll just state what I meant: Your freedoms (especially that of freedom of speech) will be endangered (if not outright banned) if the populace lacked the ability to have the weapons the second amendment provides for - because sometimes you have to fight for it. We live in what we think is a civilized society but that veil is a thin one which can tear when you least expect it.
  8. Tough one but I'll give it my best shot: I'd have kept Prue alive and kept the original recipe of The Power Of Three. I don't hate the character of Paige, but I think it would have been better for Prue to have remained with her sisters. I wouldn't be averse to Paige turning up later in a future storyline. 2. I would have had a storyline bringing back Nathanial Pratt as the new D.A. when Cole left. He could have been another mortal thorn in the sisters' sides as he investigates Cole's disappearance and the strange goings on that are connected to the Halliwells. I also would have brought back Cal Greene and having Phoebe try to keep from falling to temptation to kill him. As a bonus, Paige could be the girl he brutalizes and sets her off. 3. I'd have liked to see the sisters' powers grow properly! Connie Burge had a plan for them to have three powers each (one active, one passive, one signature). We really needed to see how powerful the sisters were intended to be and really test their abilities. Phoebe should have had better control of her premonitions and empathy, Piper should have been able to reverse time (limited to a few minutes - enough to get the drop on a baddie), Prue should have been able to fight like in Primrose Empath and better develop her bilocation power. What we ended up was three afterthoughts, who seemed to get dumber about using magic, not wiser. I'd ideally love to have all of them since they all serve balanced functions (Premonitions to see the danger, freezing to halt it, and TK to slap the s**t out of it!). Failing that, I'd love to have Phoebe's premonitions. I'd be able to get answers to some questions by touching the object or person. However, Paige's orbing and glamouring are very attractive options. First would be a new [Charmed] prophecy - and the boys role in it. I'd also build up the brothers' relationship and personalities, as well as being witches who were raised with magic all their lives, unlike their mom and aunts. Like their predecessors, they would have to balance magic with daily life and dealing with the usual sturm und drang that comes with it. Perhaps little sis, Melinda. She's much younger than her brothers and she wants to get a breather from her over protective family back home and figures living with her brothers across the country (I like the idea of the boys living in Boston) would be a great start.
  9. I wonder why they'd consider live entertainment? Lots of dances I'd been to in HS had piped in music.
  10. As someone who knows something about concealed carry, it's wrong to assume someone will just shoot back when bullets start flying. Owning a gun is a great responsibility and using it even for self defense shouldn't be taken lightly. Not all situations call for a legal gun owner to fire back at a bad guy. Some situations call for not shooting. Each scenerio is different.
  11. I came across a channel on YT which shows videos of Monkee songs which were covered by other groups. It was through that I came to know an almost forgotten folk pop group from the late 60s called, "The Will-O-Bees". From what I can tell they only released several 45 singles but never released an album and very little of their work is available on CD or digitally. Their sound can be described as along the lines of The Seekers or The Mammas & Papas. They covered The Monkees' classic, "Shades of Gray" (written by Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil - they were also signed by Columbia-Screen Gems as the Monkees were so they also had access to some great tunes). I find myself enjoying their version of Shades of Gray (which has a completely different arrangement), plus another Mann-Weil tune called "It's Not Easy". The group also recorded the theme song for a TV series called, "The Ugliest Girl In Town", which is actually a cuter song than one would think!
  12. Just remember, you can't have a first amendment without the second. What made up militias? Common everyday folk who believed in freedom and fighting for it. They weren't "National Guardsmen". We the people are the "militias". I live in the Western US and the "cowboy mentality" is real to some extent as they and their families have lived in the area for generations. However it is also a state of mind for those who are independent in thought and spirit.
  13. I've been reading it too - I loved seeing many of HB's adventure characters finally united! It's a dream come true for someone who grew up with the original cartoons! For the most part I'm enjoying it. It's almost like revisiting old friends. I am curious about the new characters and reworkings in this comic. For Frankenstein Jr. , they have Buzz's mother as the surviving parent, which is reversed in the original cartoon. They didn't really need to do that. They also had Jonny Quest's mom as a scientist working along side her husband Benton Quest (no one really knew much about her character, even Doug Wildy admitted he didn't put much into her except that she died before the show begins). There is also Deva who's working with Birdman's secret organization - though she's never been seen before. The girl with the Impossibles is called Cobalt - who has control over magnetic fields (essentially, Magneto for the HB comic universe), but she's newly created for the comic as well. I guess someone wanted to add some "girl power" to the story. I do give the comic props for giving an origin of powers story for The Impossibles and even a wink and nod to the old show. I'm surprised
  14. Rose McGowan claims to have been raped by a studio bigwig and is talking about the fallout and how actresses are badly treated in Hollywood.
  15. Maybe a TV World in which people could interact into their favorite TV show (drama or sitcom) and get involved in the action and "meet" characters they've enjoyed watching. Perhaps a Mystery World in which people can get involved into a mystery solving adventure - perhaps pick from Sherlock Holmes (Victorian or Edwardian era), The Thin Man (1930s-40s), et al and try to solve an original mystery.
  16. Technically, no convicted witches were burned in Salem - or anywhere in the US. Most were either hanged or imprisoned indefinitely. To add insult to injury, they largely were victims of those who coveted their property (women with no husbands or sons) so they were accused to get them out of the way. I also prefer Morality Bites. Most everything about the episode works (even if you get past the idea that one of the most liberal cities in the US would actually allow for the public burning of witches) and it was a great introduction to how powerful the sisters could actually become; sadly, TPTB chose to screw that up in later seasons. It also gave a a potential future antagonist in the form of Nathaniel Pratt. When Cole left the DAs office, I thought it was the perfect way to bring the character back and create new trouble for the sisters - but he was conveniently forgotten.
  17. True. I always had the feeling he character was meant to emulate David Addison (played by Bruce Willis) from "Moonlighting". He was supposed to be the offbeat guy who would tell uptight Prue to lighten up. Unfortunately the actors had no chemistry and I was never interested in their romantic pairing.
  18. May I recommend the Future Quest comic series published by DC. I've always been a fan of the HB cartoons of the 60s and many of those heroes are brought back for a great crossover adventure! Jonny Quest, Space Ghost, The Herculoids, Birdman, Mightor and The Impossibles are all out to save the universe! It helps if you've seen the cartoons before but it's not necessary.
  19. Here's the latest on Shannen's fight against cancer. She is shown going to a workout after chemo.
  20. Getting classroom experience wouldn't be too hard - the district is always looking for substitutes, although they get none of the bennies an official teacher gets. They get paid about 90 bucks a day. My current schedule at my job (overnights) would make it tough to do since class starts around 7am-ish and I won't be out until 8am at the earliest. I also worry about dealing with the political end of things. My sister had her share of stories (bitchy principals and the incompetents who cozy up to them), and I'm worried I wouldn't be able to teach what needs to be taught or lose control of the classroom. I did find a tutoring certification group, although it may not necessarily hold the gravitas of a college degree for some prospective clients.
  21. There's a business idea I've been thinking about but I wondered if it was feasible. I'm looking to go back to school for a Masters in Education. I have been told that I should be a teacher because of my educated background (though I do not have a teaching degree). I personally liked the idea of homeschooling and wondered if I could set myself up to either be a private homeschooling tutor or perhaps a consultant who can help parents get started on personalizing lesson plans for their kids. My sister, who happens to be a special ed teacher, thinks I'd be better suited to being an "online teacher" for a charter school. The idea originally came about in part due to my dissatisfaction of modern public education in general (the schools in my area rank quite low nationally), the potential for kids to learn without having to be part of the school district's schedule (the one who's getting the material has to be held back for those who aren't), and bullying/peer pressure (which is an awful distraction) . If I were a tutor working "in person", there would have to be safeguards to prevent accusations of inappropriate behavior, and I'd have to be able to prove results, which I'm not in a position to do yet. Thoughts?
  22. Maharincess: That was horrible for Chrissie Hynde to treat you that way!! I understand having to deal with fans can be exasperating sometimes, but what she did was totally over the line! How hard would it have been to say, "You named your daughter after me? How nice! " All about making music? It's not like you're preventing her from doing that! How did that figure into anything? Weird! If it had been me, I would have told her to go you know where and suggest she get a personality transplant!! I haven't met many of my idols either - often not even writing fan letters - for similar reasons.
  23. I'm so annoyed with the state of my newsroom right now. I've been in the TV news biz for 15 years and there's been a shakeup recently - the news director who had helped take our newscasts from worst to first and manned the helm for over a decade got sacked, as did one of my supervisors - head of photography. I was told by management that there's a "new vision" they didn't see eye to eye with and were let go. It does happen in the business but I find the timing a bit suspect. Not to mention the new news director has been bringing her own people in (to replace the folks that were let go). I've been rolling with the changes, but there's been something recently that really bugged me. When you work in the news biz long enough, you start getting a nose for frauds/attention seekers. Some are professionals who purposely bring stories to the media as a test to see if the crew will investigate further (because investigative reporting is all but non existent these days and many reporters will run with anything that turns up in their e-mails), others are trying to "raise awareness" of some perceived wrong (bullying or racism) by committing some act of vandalism on their own property and claiming they were being "bullied" when in fact, nothing of the sort occured. There was an e-mail which was sent out to everyone in News in which a local resident (who happens to be Mexican-American) claimed she had received a letter (in poorly worded English!) which stated she should put her trash cans behind the fence so the neighborhood won't, "look like a barrio". I've seen many cases of similar situations which turned out to be false (usually they confess to it days later - especially if it's being investigated by the police as a hate crime) and all it does it make the news department look sloppy because they were running with a story ("the narrative") which was never true and only served to stir up the viewers over something that never happened. My old news director wouldn't have jumped on this story so quickly, but the new one was practically giddy based on the e-mail reply and we ran with it! My experience tells me this story doesn't pass the sniff test and I worry that our credibility will be at risk if in a few days it turns out this was a lie and could have been sussed out sooner. I had thought about bringing this up in a future meeting but I'm afraid this is the "new vision" our bosses want to stay with.
  24. Early in our republic, the President had the highest number of votes, while the VP had the second highest, regardless of party. It was a while before Presidential candidates chose a VP to be elected in tandem.
