Witch Way Now: Charmed in the Media and the Cast in Other Roles
magicdog replied to Lisin's topic in Charmed [V]
I had not heard! Definitely cements their long time friendship; not everyone would RV it with friends. I hadn't seen any mention of it here yet - but Eric Dane (who played Phoebe's Season 6 love, Jason Dean), is starring in the TNT series, The Last Ship. I've only seen 2 eps of it; the show is fair on the writing/plotting but Dane actually does very well in his role as Captain. He looks a bit older and grizzled than his Charmed appearances. -
I've been catching eps here and there on IFC - they're still a hoot. My teenaged niece however was a bit puzzled until I explained things to her. It piques her interest if nothing else.

Bane would likely have had to have been portrayed by a Mr. Universe type. Mickey Hargitay perhaps? He would have been about 40 at the time and still in shape. Perhaps Poison Ivy would have been a bit older and portrayed as a scientist rather than super powered. I'm thinking June Lockhart.

Did he learn nothing from the last episode? He really shouldn't be casting spells until he's learned more.

Speculation for Book 3: Change
magicdog replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Legend Of Korra [V]
I do have a hunch Su Yin may be up to something and may not necessarily be past her beef with Lin. In the previous episode, when she asks Korra if Lin had taught her to metal bend, Korra tells her no. Su responds by saying Lin wouldn't have been a good teacher anyway - in a rather snooty manner. I also think she is looking at a way to remove the Earth Queen. There's no love lost there, and from what we've seen so far, she sees the queen as an impediment to progress - something Su prizes since her city is all about being all you can be. Perhaps because her parents (and other guradians) didn't want her to grow up with that threat over her head. Being the Avatar and training is enough to deal with. I agree she could have been told about the Red Lotus by the time she left for Republic City. -
Welcome Back, Kotter - General Discussion
magicdog replied to David T. Cole's topic in Welcome Back, Kotter
IIRC, Epstein mentioned his uncle was a slum lord. It's noted the Kotter's new apartment was in a good neighborhood and Epstein mentioned that his uncle figured why rip off the poor - when you could rip off everyone! Is it wrong to note that I had a WBK t-shirt as a kid? -
There's at least one time when that wasn't true - when Past Freya died in the 1906 earthquake.
-
I didn't mind the bands being rivals but the girls almost seemed evil for evil's sake - with the exception of Stormer who seemed to have a conscience but went with the group because she was rather weak. I was waiting for the episode in which she's tell off Pizzazz and either join The Holograms or perhaps team up with her brother. I did appreciate that Phyllis had some characterization (mean due to being spoiled but ignored by her father - shades of Harry Osbourne, no?), and Roxy was functionally illiterate. I also admit I did like their tunes a bit better than those of The Holograms.
-
There were times this show frustrated me with the easily fooled friends, and black and white plot and resolutions ("Misfits movie sucks, but the Hologram's movie is the best evah!"). I would love to see the show get a reboot - with stronger storylines, and maybe even a soundtrack.
-
IIRC The Stingers had a really hardscrabble life in the streets as an up and coming band. I suppose it was used to somewhat explain their wild behavior . There presence in the show also made The Misfits watch their backs, which I took for a good thing.

Actually I can understand it. It's one thing to put other bad guys in jail. When it's your kid, you may feel differently. It's normal and understandable for parents to want to protect their kids and even stick up for them even after having done something wrong. Yes, Toph was wrong to ship Su out of town and make the case "go away"; how many other kids who are "connected" have had the same treatment? Plenty! What should have happened was Toph getting tough on Su right then and there; it's possible being single and being chief of police made that difficult. It wasn't so much as shame of having her daughter in jail, as it was her breaking her own laws and taking part in a cover up because at that moment, Su was better than any other person who would have been arrested under identical circumstances and she even attacked Lin for "doing her duty".

Rose McGowan in the news - apparently she's being compared physically with Michael Jackson. Some blame too much plastic surgery since her car accident back in '07. -
Witches in Time: Favorite and Least Favorite Seasons
magicdog replied to Lisin's topic in Charmed [V]
Fortunately, TNT rolls back to "Something Wicca This Way Comes" this morning at 10am EST (7am PST). How I love that season! -
Looks like Dean Stockwell is keeping busy. He's in a new film called, "Persecution". Haven't seen the film yet (so far it's in theatres too far from my area), but considering the subject matter, it might be worth a viewing on DVD. Just looking at his resume, Stockwell seems to have done it all - with non acting adventures in between!

Still not getting the hate on Opal. It was Korra who approached HER to try to talk to Lin - thinking Lin would be willing. It's obvious Opal is being characterized as a shy and (almost painfully) naive girl who thought Lin would be receptive to her. She probably would not have approached her at that moment if it weren't for Korra's interference.

Witches in Time: Favorite and Least Favorite Seasons

Good news! It seems TNT's repeats will be back on Season 1 by Wednesday. What a difference between the series finale and the premiere! -
I used to enjoy this show, but there were two episodes which drove me nuts due to the era the murders occurred in. One was "Beautiful Little Fool" in which a woman is murdered by her rich lover in 1929 and their love child dumped at an orphanage. The other was, "Torn", which took place in 1919! I can't see how Lilly & Co. would have bothered to make time for either case, especially considering all parties involved were long since dead and there could be no arrest. The other thing that bugged was the routine of Lilly interviewing Suspect # 1, who hints that they should talk to Suspect #2, who denies everything and says Suspect # 1 is the one they should be looking at due to some detail suspect number one forgot to mention. Then we learn the killer was someone we never suspected. Or was an accident. Then rinse and repeat. I'm not saying there weren't some well written episodes or ones that tugged at my heart strings, but after a while the pattern was getting by the numbers.

I'm intrigued by this too. In Aang's time (170+ years ago) the Air nomads had a long established tradition in how they lived their lives. That was wiped out when the Fire Nation slaughtered them. With this Airbender comeback, we have benders who had lives, lifestyles and responsibilities long before getting their bending. Having all of them pick up where the old Airbenders left off could be a bigger challenge. Tenzin's attempts at recruiting benders brought up the issue of how many people may not want to live exactly like the old benders did. Should all of them get the arrow tattoos when they become masters? Should they have to be vegetarians? Should they give up their airbending children to the temple monks to raise and train? I am expecting some new Airbenders may choose to compromise in how to live their lives. As for the Korra butting into Lin's issues with Su, I agree that Korra was wrong to try to patch things up since she didn't know why Lin was upset with Su and it was rather mean to tell Lin how bitter and alone she would be. However Lin was wrong to chew out Opal. She had nothing to do with what went on between her aunt and her mother and just wanted to get to know Lin as family.

I don't know if it's intentional or a way to create drama. However I can see how some of the dysfunction can occur. Firstly, it could be the kids feeling like they are trapped in their parents' shadow. You parents saved the world. One parent was an Avatar whose job was to keep the world in balance. You dad was the last known airbender; then you're the last airbender. I can see Aang unintentionally playing favorites with Tenzin due to the airbending connection. All things airbender rested on little Tenzin's shoulders until his children were born. Of course we haven't heard about Katara's side in all this. To be fair, Aang wouldn't know much about families and conventional parenting since he was raised by monks and not his real parents. Toph obviously was a rebel and thought living her life the opposite of how her parents tried to raise her didn't completely work out with Su and Lin. Based on spoilers as to what caused the rift between them, I can understand Lin's distance. In their case I also think it's about lifestyles and desire. Lin was hurt when Tenzin left her for Pema, and perhaps she was jealous that her sister had the home and family she might have wanted but sacrificed for her career in the RC police. We don't know what Sokka was like as a parent, assuming he had children at all. So far there has not been any mention of cousins in the Water tribe for Tenzin's kids. Indeed! Katara taught her well. I loved the whole look of the Metal City. However they are asking for trouble by mentioning it was the safest city in the world! I liked how the whole goal in the culture is to encourage people to reach their potential. I am curious about Su being set up to remove the Earth Queen. There is no love nor loyalty to her and in her opinion, she's not part of her world of progress. Verrick's appearance also makes me think something is going down before season's end. I wasn't expecting to see him so soon, but with him in the mix, anything could happen. No one seems to have mentioned this, but since Opal is an Airbender, does this mean she never was an Earth/metal bender? That on it's own must have been difficult considering the rest of her family are. I can't remember if it was mentioned if Su's husband and eldest son were either - only that they were architects.

In Memoriam: Entertainment Industry Celebrity Deaths
magicdog replied to Kromm's topic in Everything Else TV
I was coming in to report on Mazursky's death. I had posted it in the Monkees thread as well since he co-wrote the pilot and was featured in the opening sequence of it as a "man on the street" reporter. So sorry to hear about Bob Hastings. I remember him in so many roles: Kelsey who owned Kelsey's Bar on "All In The Family", his animation voicework in "Superboy" (1966), "Jeannie" (as "Henry" in 1971), and as Commissioner Gordon in BTAS. -
He was her father. The queen looks about 50-60 something in age. I remember it was mentioned in passing on ATLA that the Earth King traveled the world in disguise for a while near the end of the war. No other follow up had been made until now. Interesting that the Queen is the polar opposite of her father. Perhaps the Dai Li had something to do with that. No, just the SWT. Although he was originally meant to rule NWT if it hadn't been for his brother's treachery. I wasn't sure if Eska & Deska would have automatically taken over, but I guess it makes things easier. I loved that Bolin and Mako are no longer alone in the world. It was also touching seeing the boys sadly explain to their grandmother that their father (her son) was dead for many years. I read elsewhere that Grandmother is the same girl Zuko had a date with in "Tales of Ba Sing Se".

I disagree (this coming from a person who didn't even know these characters from the comics and only familiar with their JL/JLU versions). Mr. Terrific we really didn't get to know all that well sine he replaced Manhunter as team organizer and didn't have much to do onscreen. I liked Hawk & Dove's introduction and the bar fight scene (and having them voiced by former co-stars from The Wonder Years also worked well!) but the episode itself was lousy. I would have liked to have seen them front and center again. I loved Booster Gold and Skeets! Best of all their VAs consistently voiced them through two incarnations! I will also add to the Vigilante love. I also wish we could have seen more of him and Shining Knight working together. They were a team in the comics and it would have been fun to have seen them do more.

Speculation for Book 3: Change
magicdog replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Legend Of Korra [V]
At the end of last season, they went back to the NWT. They mentioned how difficult it would be to explain to their mother what had happened to their father (him merging with the evil entity and being destroyed by Korra). It appears that an airbender that isn't a member of Aang's family has been born. Considering "Changes" is the theme of this season, I'm guessing the time has come for airbenders to return. Another "Sparky Boom Boom Man, er.. Woman"! The Earth Kingdom / Ba Sing Se is apparently ruled by a queen (or empress) now. It also appears that Uncle Bumi has airbending powers after all. -
I believe it's the dragon that hatched from that egg he and Aang discovered in the Sun Warriors' village. Unless, like the sky bison, a bunch of dragons were discovered after the war.

A little good news from former Charmed guest star, Amy Adams (Maggie Murphy from Season 2's "Murphy's Luck"): She gave up her first class seat for a soldier. Class act.
