Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

It would have been prevented if someone's parents had taught their son and daughter how to behave in public and not threaten people who caught them in bad behavior. -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I'm with Maharincess on this one - it's just a scare tactic from the [not] trustworthy media. If you decide to use it, find the best quality available - one that doesn't have fillers, preservatives, etc. . Remember the old saying, about not stealing (because the government doesn't like competition!)? Well, it's kind of the same thing with the very politicized CDC, the ATF, and the FDA. If something comes on the market (like an herbal supplement) Big Pharma can't make money from, then they'll do everything to make it unavailable. Also, keep in mind that for every board member of a major pharmaceutical company, they're often also serving on boards for rehab clinics!! -
I'm not sure. If anything, I think he would have played the character far straighter. The closest I can think of how the character might have been would be from an episode of Adam -12 in which Micky played a biker ("Dirt Duel"). He tended to play the character cool and subtle. I don't think the character or Happy Days would have turned into what it became had Micky won the part. Funny that in an interview years later, Henry Winkler thought he'd lost the part of The Fonz because he'd heard/seen Micky audition for the part.

It's very possible. Peter admitted in a DVD commentary that Mike, Micky and Davy had never used drugs before and he was the one who "turned them on". I'm glad he's sober now, but for many years he was using pot, LSD, alcohol, cocaine and heaven knows what else during those days. I've heard from long time followers of both the band and Peter's solo band projects that Pete was also a very angry drunk and unpleasant to be around. He sobered up in 1981 and still appears at [AA] meetings and speaks to other sobiety groups. I can't help but think that from what little I know about his home life growing up, it sounds like his parents (or at least his father) were very cold and distant folk. In another commentary, when Peter mentions his telling his parents that he got hired as a Monkee, he described them as being "congratulatory" but not really happy for him about it. It also makes me wonder that's why Peter was such a rebellious soul - wanting to be more open emotionally (and expanding his mind with drugs), but his attempts nearly destroyed him.

A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here
magicdog replied to potatoradio's topic in Everything Else
Here's a dilly of a story! On Friday I was editing the morning show as usual. There is a reporter/part time anchor who is notorious for not communicating with editors for her morning video segments. She left the vaguest of directions in her script and didn't talk to anyone about how she wanted her material edited. My editing partner went home sick and that put more pressure on me to get the job done (I was given a substitute but he's not familiar with the pace the job typically demands and needed guidance from me the entire time). I'd been trying to contact the reporter - especially since we were getting closer and closer to air time. I finally went into the studio during commercial and asked her what she wanted for her segment. I'll admit I was "in the zone" and I'm under the gun to get everything right for air, but I assure you not once was I nasty about it. Just firm and direct. She tells me she'll just edit the segment herself. I said, "Fine" (but not in a snotty tone), and turned to return to my edit bay. Then as I'm leaving I can hear her say to everyone in the studio, "Ugggh! What an attitude!!". Mind you this is in front of her co-anchor, the weather reporter, the traffic reporter, the floor manager and intern running the teleprompter. I was livid!! I couldn't help myself. I spun right around and told her that it wasn't an attitude it was me trying to do my job. I went back to my bay to finish without incident but I was still steamed. Talk about unprofessional!! How is it that even all these years, people act like it's still the 8th grade and treat people like they were the unpopular kids? If she had told me in the beginning that she would edit the segment itself, this entire incident would have been avoided entirely! Naturally I want an apology but I don't expect to get one. I've never treated her or any of my co-workers badly. I've always spoken with them, joked with them, made small talk with them, and treated them IMO, like the professionals we're supposed to be, and I thought had been. I'm not saying we don't have bad days but this in my opinion is something that was over the line. Any thoughts on what I should do when Monday comes around? -
Witch Way Now: Charmed in the Media and the Cast in Other Roles

It's just that her public breakdown seems to be similar to those of other celebs like Miley Cyrus and Britney Spears who coincidentally, also shaved their heads when their issues manifested. That's why I was so shocked seeing Rose's shaved head during the Dr. Oz interview. I felt like I'd seen all this before. I'm not saying these women don't have good reason to be upset or traumatized; it's just how they all chose to show it. -

I don't think it was so much that as the fact that the core members of the team were Vietnam vets and women would not have been in a combat role (certainly not tried or imprisoned together) with the men. Any women in the military during that era would have been working in offices (or as doctors and nurses in medical units) not slogging in rice paddies with Hannibal et al. There was Amy in early seasons who was a reporter who detailed their adventures for her newspaper and try to help them prove their innocence. It never bothered me (as a woman) that this wasn't a woman centric show. I agree with this! I also remember an episode in which Darrin and Sam are driving in the rain for a party and their car breaks down. They were no where near a gas station and Darrin and Sam got into an argument about her using her witchcraft to fix the car and get them where they needed to be. Darrin had the nerve to ask her to use her powers when he always insisted she do things the mortal way. She refused, and he was stuck getting wet in the rain to fix the car and arrived late (and wet) to the party. They briefly separate after a heated argument and Sam takes Tabatha and "goes home to Mother". Believe it or not, I sided with Sam on this. In fact, Darrin shouldn't have forbidden Sam from using magic if it were around the house - let her use it to cook and clean, dress in the coolest fashions available and make life a bit easier. They could have compromised by letting him work and trying to further his career, while she kept house in her own way - and perhaps use her magic for "security" (burglars and such). Funny... I remember my mom loved the show - if only because she loved the idea of being able to clean a house with magic!

Aged Well: Old Shows That Are Better Than You Remember

Actually here were "boy bands" (actually boy groups since they didn't always play when performing) predating the rock era. There were the Four Lads, The Four Freshman, The Four Aces (four was a pretty popular number wasn't it?) and Doo Wop groups of the later 50s and early 60s. Technically, you could say the barbershop quartets of the turn of the last century qualify as such! -
Not a double post! I caught this morning's episode, "The Rice Estate" and, while an interesting story, I couldn't help but be annoyed at some details of the episode: Why did Eunice Rice's stepson go to all that trouble to get the house? Would it have been so difficult for him to approach her and agree to something rather than terrorize her with pranks? What were the odds the stepson would have found the exact same clown costume Kookie was wearing at the party? Eunice seemed like she might turn into one of those weird old ladies considering she was willing to destroy valuable antique furniture rather than sell some of it to keep the utilities on. I was particularly annoyed at the resolution of the episode when Mrs. Rice said with the sale of the house (netting half a million bucks!), she mentioned she wanted to visit an old flame who somewhat resembled Bailey and may have been the impetus for her being attracted to him during the case. It would have been better for her to have said she wanted to try to figure out things and rediscover herself after several years of abuse at the hands of her controlling husband. One thing that did haunt me was the mention of the emotional and mental abuse of Mrs. Rice by her late husband. Talking about abuse is much more open today than it was then but it was interesting to hear her recollections of it (not being allowed to speak until spoken to, and even then to address him only, excluding her from talking or interacting with other people, etc. ). Those are classic abuse signs, aside from any physical signs like bruises or other injuries. I applaud the writer for putting something like that at the forefront.

Monkee co-creator, Bob Rafelson used the term to describe them from the beginning. The term romp even falls into the dictionary definition: I'll probably have to do more research to find the actual quote he used but I do remember him and those closest to the project had used that word to describe them. I remember seeing "These Boots..." on MTV back in the 80s as a "Classic Clip", and no doubt it's also is a forerunner to the modern music video. I never saw a Scopitone machine where I was growing up (Long Island, NY in the 70s and 80s) but I'll take your word for it. They may have had them in certain areas of NY (or NYC) during that time as well. The Monkees were different in which their romps were weekly (meant to promote their music in funny and interesting ways) and not occasional like the other artists you mentioned. Although I'm too young to have seen this first hand, most music acts had to get their exposure between radio and occasional TV appearances. TV helped their sales skyrocket if they were on a large enough show. My parents used to tell me that if you performed on The Ed Sullivan Show back in the day, you were "made". Same thing for American Bandstand. Being a weekly TV series made the need to appear on those shows unnecessary for The Monkees. -
General Pilot & Shows In Development Discussion

As someone who works in the business, Im curious about this one. I hope they gets things right. I critique harshly on shows or films on topics I'm close to. The She-Ra reboot sound interesting too. I used to watch the original and she was supposed to be introduced in the He-man reboot before it was unceremoniously cancelled. I hope it's not written with a juvenile tone. The series iteration of Mighty Ducks could be fun - of course the Bad News Bears TV series flopped so....... I wonder if anyone from the film will do a walk on? -
Found this interesting article about the restaurant located next to the PI's office, and seen in every episode: Dino's Lodge Some color photos of the exteriors here. Sad to say, it's long gone!

Sounds like you found FETV. I'm a huge Monkees fan and it's nice they turned up in syndication again (even though I have the Blue Ray set!)! The show IMO is awesome although some fans are often torn over which season was better since despite the humor, there were differences (first season a bit more mainstream in look and sitcom tone while season 2 was more psychedelic and go for broke). The music definitely stands the test of time (especially some lost gems which never made the light of day until relatively recently) and the show is credited as being the origin of music videos as we know them (at the time they were referred to as "romps"). I happen to prefer the first season a bit more - especially due to how well the guys come together as friends. The serious moments balance the silly ones very well. If you ever see the episodes, "Success Story", "I've Got A Little Song Here", "One Man Shy" and "Monkee Vs. Machine", you'll definitely agree how these guys sell it. ETA: "Monkee Mother" is another Season 1 standout as they interact pretty well with the recently departed Rose Marie. -

This Never Gets Old: TV Shows You Can Watch Again And Again

Have you seen Scooby Doo Mysyery Incorporated? It is a hoot and plenty of both deconstruction of Scooby Doo myths and character development!! I am adding that show and the DCAU and Young Justice to my rewatchables list. -

Watching Rose on Dr. Oz right now! Holy cow she shaved her head!!! As for the proposed reboot I still say nay! If they bring back the original actresses for a limited run (and maybe retcon some serious issues that followed she show post season3) and keep Brad Kern away from it I’d be ok with it. If they want to create a series about witches then go ahead. But it should not be called Charmed. I also am annoyed with the term “feminist” to describe the reboot. The original show was all about girl power in the beginning and how three witchy sisters tried to find balance between magic and non magical worlds. While I do agree the show went down hill (PhoeME for starters) that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. -

Tough call since many shows I used to love when they were first run I find hard to watch now (though reasons vary). I enjoy watching The Monkees a lot! I could watch it on a loop!! Barney Miller All In The Family The Rifleman (its marathoned on AMC on Saturday mornings) and I find the chemistry between the characters of Lucas and Mark McCain to be awesome and genuine!! Emergency Adam 12 Dragnet (any version!) Charmed (though often I tune out after season 5 and tune back in for the series finale. The Big Valley (date I say I liked it better than Bonanza!) For some animatedbexamples: Avatar The Last Airbender (not so much it’s sequel series) Scooby Doo Mystery Incorporated (awesome deconstruction of the original series with great jokes and character development). Star vs The Forces of Evil Danny Phantom (the best series Butch Hartman has ever done) -
With the exception of Life With Lucy (her last series from the 80s) her other shows ran at least 3 seasons.
-
Maybe not a direct reboot but Lucille Ball was brought back several times to essentially play the same character in slightly different settings. Even many of the original ILL writers came with her.
-
When I was a kid and the show first run someone had told me Boot got his name due to his chewing up a pair of boots . However I dont remember hearing it in the series proper or a shot of a guilty looking Boot gnawing on Johnny’s shoes (because you know it would be Johnny’s boots!!).

It would have been even more awesome if all surviving Emergency actors had made an appearance ! Bonus if it happened in one episode!!

Was I surprised to see this show here! im too young to have seen it first run but I’d heard about it from my parents. METV isn’t the only place I’ve seen it air recently. I’ve seen it on AntennaTV and occasional marathons on Decades.
