  1. I wanted to know what kind of chief would decide to send two guys who were fighting with one threatening the other outside by themselves to work on high ladder drills. SMH
  2. I think you mean Gwen, but I totally agree. I finally watched the full episode last night, and I found myself continuing to ask my husband, "Are we supposed to feel sorry for him?" I didn't. I thought Mrs. Hughes had the best remark that he needed a fresh start to find his place in the world with the unspoken line "because you burned all your bridges here with your continued unpleasantness." I really felt for Mary. I am sure she either never saw Matthew's body again or only saw him after he was cleaned up from the crash. Not only did she watch Charlie die, but she now has a visual for Matthew's death and how awful it was. She was reeling twice, but was still trying to console Henry and begged him not to force the relationship issue. I know I am in the minority in finding Mary and Henry sweet together. I like both of them in their scenes. Edith and Mary seemed pleasant in this episode. I thought Mary's first remark about Bertie's visiting Edith in London was nice, and she seemed surprised at Edith's response. Then they ran together to the scene of the accident. I am sure it won't last, but it makes me frustrated for the entire season that we could have watched their relationship evolve into something nice. With two episodes left, here's hoping.
  3. Surprisingly, this is the only quote I found from Cosell: "There's nothing to say except that the law must take its course," said Howard Cosell, who worked with Simpson on ABC's "Monday Night Football."
  4. The Casey alderman race isn't very interesting, and his answers were so pat. I will hold police accountable. I will make sure they obey the law. Wow, that really differentiated you from the pack! Was anyone else nervous for Cruz after Severide outed him to Richter? "Joe Cruz, I mean a man in my squad noticed that you lied about the fall and might be a violent criminal. What's your response so that I can add it to my report?" Kelly is too stupid to be in charge.
  5. I have been called twice for jury duty, one civil and one criminal. I was too far back to be chosen for civil, although I am pretty sure the defense attorney already crossed me off when he saw where I worked and mentioned knowing a few lawyers there only to have me tell him the ones he named had retired years earlier. I was potential juror #4 on the criminal case, but I answered a question differently than the other potential jurors during and, when asked to explain my answer, caused three more potential jurors change their minds. They got called in to the judge's chambers and yelled at. They asked me why I didn't get called in, and I told them I was sure I had already been dinged for being opinionated and persuasive. Never been called again. Hah. I don't want to serve on a criminal trial, but wouldn't mind experiencing a civil one. I was just out of law school and working at a big firm down south when the OJ Simpson case was happening. I still feel very conflicted about it. Back then I really didn't want him to be guilty (I come from a big football family and we always enjoyed watching him play). I was very uncomfortable with all the police foul-ups and especially Mark Fuhrman's participation in discovering evidence, given his racial biases. I tried to avoid a lot of the details, but that wasn't easy at the firm. Texas has its own folklore of wealthy white men murdering their spouses, sons in law, exes' boyfriends, etc. and getting off due to colorful lawyering. It seemed like every partner at the firm had some juicy "fun" tidbit of their connection to a case, even though we did no criminal work. The Simpson case was discussed in the hallways a lot and we brought a television into the conference room so that everyone on our floor could see the verdict live. When I watched all these attorneys who so gleefully shared their six degrees of connection to the defenses in all the Texas cases express outrage that a guilty man could go free, my stomach turned. Now I accept that he is guilty, but I also understand how and why race played a huge role in that trial.

Just be careful- Those are court documents in that the plaintiff's attorney filed them with the court. I believe we are reading allegations, not adjudicated facts. No doubt something bad happened, but we might need to take some of that report with a grain of salt.
  7. Basically all the parents in Dead Poets Society. I don't remember any of them being even halfway decent.

Well, if one of his handlers had to set him straight, it worked. Whatever they discussed, the phone call caused Drew to label him a classy guy. It caused Richard Sherman years later to label him a classy guy. It caused numerous football players to label him a classy guy for the handwritten notes they have received from him over the years. It caused fans to label him a classy guy for the handwritten notes and phone calls they have received over the years. Maybe Carolina should find out the name of that handler and have him or her chat with Cam. I just think it is interesting because I hated Peyton with a passion for years. I thought he was over-hyped in college, and I spent his first several years in the NFL actively rooting against him. He has managed to change my view to the point that I now consider him one of the best. Considering I don't have nearly the dislike for Cam that I had for Peyton (my issues with Cam stem from his college antics and his inability to say anything of substance on Jon Gruden's quarterback camp before he was drafted), it shouldn't take much for me to change my mind. As I have said, a quick "Sorry, guys, I know you're just trying to do your job and I let my emotions get the best of me" and I'd be good.

Are they really trying to say Cam got up and left because he could hear the Broncos celebrating next door? Isn't Cam the one who said if you don't want to see him celebrate after scoring a touchdown, don't let him score? Cam, if you didn't want to hear the Broncos cheer, you should have beaten them. I think Cam will determine whether we are still talking about this incident six years from now. Learn from this and move on and do better next time. America loves to give people second (and third and fourth) chances if they acknowledge they screwed up.

Manning attended the press conference and then Drew said that Peyton called him that evening, saying that Peyton was a classy guy. People waning to compare the situations conveniently forget to add that phone call. After the loss to Seattle, Sherman praised Peyton for seeking him out to check on his injury, saying he was a class act. Peyton clearly learned and learned quickly how to handle himself.

Yeah, I have never really understood the "at least he's being authentic" defense. When a racist uses a racial epithet, he's being authentic but I don't laud him for it. I hope Johnny can get his act together. He is so young; he needs to take 3-4 years off and figure out his life. The crazy thing is that even after 4 years he could still make it back to the NFL if he did that and found he still had a passion to play.
  12. That is a great point, kathy, and a failing of the book. Harry only gets to learn about his mother as her story relates to James. The only people who could talk about Lily in her own right are Petunia and Snape, Neither of whom would be willing to share any such knowledge with Harry. (Is it crazy that I can hear Dumbledore's voice gently chiding me, "Professor Snape?") I blame both Snape and Dumbledore for Harry's inability to learn occlumency. There had to be another person to teach him. McGonagall? Lupin in secret? Someone else? He had to know Snape and Harry were doomed to fail.

Exactly. When my children complain about blown calls in any sport, I ask if the players played a perfect game. If not, then everyone needs to stop whining. Refs are allowed to make mistakes, too. Great teams overcome them.

    The NBA

So Tyronn Lue was asked about the controversy of taking over for David Blatt and he said this: "Look, they ridiculed Jesus Christ, so I'm certainly no exception," Lue told Cleveland.com. "I don't care what's being said. I know how loyal I was to Coach Blatt, and the people that know me understand that. I have no control over what people think. I have a job to do and I'm going to do my best." Seriously?!? Where are the media relations experts when you need them? What an idiot. This is why Cleveland can't have nice things.

I don't like them either. I do recall that Brady got some grief after Giselle was heard complaining about people being mean to him. I agree that once the media picks their favorites, they don't let facts stand in the way of a good narrative. Bill and Tom get the benefit of a lot of doubts. I hope Cam comes out with a simple apology for walking away. I thought the press were bending over backwards to ask softball questions, which just spotlighted his jerkiness. Peyton was asked about Cam's press conference and said that Cam was very nice to him and congratulated him on the field. When Peyton left the field after the SB loss to New Orleans, Drew said that Peyton called him that night and was a classy guy. Those kinds of responses from the opposing players can help to quiet the critics, especially if Cam doesn't double-down on the petulance. I have eaten Papa Johns many, many years ago and it was fine, but I am someone who thinks it is very hard to make pizza taste either terrible or fantastic. They all hover in the "fine" range of taste for me.

Peyton was asked about Eli no long being able to hold 2 SB rings over Peyton's head and immediately shot it down with "maybe that is how it is in other families, but that is not who we are." He then talked about having a special moment with Eli in the locker room after the game. The whole draft-trade fiasco still leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but Eli isn't that petty to be mad that his brother's team won.

When the presentation started you could see him holding both of his kids. I think Nantz had his orders, and the NFL loves pics of Peyton with his children, especially his son. Jim was told to ask about retirement and get the camera to pan out for the kids' pics. Now when Marshall plays football they've got the color video they can show. I don't care how upset he was, Cam was a jerk at the press conference. Being young and passionate is no excuse for being a bad sport.
  18. I know we needed the dramatic kiss as the last petal fell, but I never understood why the curse wouldn't be lifted when he released her. Selfless love is what he needed to learn and what he showed in that scene. Who really cares if she loved him back? Also, how old was he when the witch placed the curse on him to begin with? If you do the math you find yourself wondering (1) whether the curse was just a little harsh for such a young child and (2) why he was allowed to open the door to strangers to begin with.
  19. From People: "She, husband Dean McDermott and their four children have moved to a $7,500 per month rental, with the 3,900 square-ft. home boasting five bedrooms and four baths, as well as a pool, spa, a gym and a media room." Glad to see they're really tightening their belts this time. [/sarcasm]
  20. I am glad they are finally addressing the elephant in the room, but now that they are it's just emphasizing how weak the premise is and always has been. I'm listening to people fight and argue and point fingers about who told and how to get them to take it back and how to save Mike and the firm, and all I can think about is that Mike is still a fraud. No matter whether they win, the damage is done to all their reputations and what does "winning" mean at this point, anyway? Mayve no one goes to jail, but Mike is still practicing law without a license. And please tell us we are going to get more motivation from the prosecutor. I need this to be some sort of "We got Capone on tax evasion" case because otherwise I don't know how she sees this as a career-making case. Edited to add that I also think it is strange that Sheila sent the email to a prosecutor. I would have approached the state bar.
  21. We stumbled across the Garfield experience and found ourselves googling information to get caught up. Really interesting time in our history. Dr. Bliss really was a piece of work, and the assassin was creepy, but sad. Hard to believe they thought Lincoln's assassination was a fluke. I really enjoyed this episode, but not so interested in the next "kill for fun" episode.
  22. Well done episode, especially the hostage situation. I don't think I understand what was housed in that building that would attract terrorists, especially since their plan seemed to be in the works for weeks and garner attention from Homeland Security. Did I miss something? I would have expected one of the Chicago landmarks to be the target. Where exactly were they? I think they've been using Gabby much better, although one scene showed me they just can't help themselves to the show's detriment. Casey was showing about seven different kinds of emotions after the hostage situation. His expressions were subtle and layered and fascinating and then they cut to a long shot of Gabby coming up to hug him. Once again, they gave her the money shot when Casey's reaction was the one I wanted to see. Sigh. Is Chili gone, or is she heading to rehab to be back next episode? If Hermann can recover from a life-threatening knife wound in one week, then surely she can kick an alcohol addiction in like time. I liked having her union rep be part of the intervention. It was an intervention, wasn't it? Make the alderman storyline go away, quickly. All in all a pretty solid episode.
  23. I was always bothered by how Molly would make decisions for Harry and demand that everyone, including Harry, obey her. Maybe he liked her maternal nature, but I found it high-handed and uncomfortably possessive.
  24. I liked that Mary knew Andy's name. That seems very consistent with her character. I think it's been ridiculous how much Isobel and Cora complain about Violet's machinations when they have been doing the same thing. It has been a dumb storyline that hasn't shown anyone in a good light. Denker and Spratt are the worst. Daisy should go work with them. So Mason moved in before the Drewes were out. Nice twisting of the knife there.
  25. I agree. I also notice that Matthew Perry is happy to blow up the scene for a joke, and he always makes me laugh.
