S03.E05: Chapter Twenty One - The Pirate
Kel Varnsen replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Mandalorian
Yea I really don't get why they were talking about how the covert needs to find a new hideout or a place to live. Mandalore didn't seem that bad. He'll by Star Wars standards it looked like a pretty livable planet. Why did they not move back there the minute Mando came back and said the living waters are still in liquid form? I do like this season though, better than season 2 I think. Because even though there was that side story with the scientist guy, none of the episodes have seemed like back door pilots. -
S03.E04: Chapter Twenty - The Foundling
Kel Varnsen replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Mandalorian
These last two episodes made me do something I didn't think was possible; actually give a shit about Bo-Katan. I still don't care about what happened to her in the animated shows, but I like how she plays off the other Mandalorians. Although you would think that once she and Mando came back and told the rest of them that the living waters of Mandalore are still there and the planet isn't poison, that the rest of them would be getting ready to move back ASAP. Because your ancestral home world has to be way better than the shitty desert giant dinosaur planet. I mean Both has to be better than that place (assuming you are able to insulate that armour). -
Watched the finale to tonight. It wasn't perfect but it was pretty good. Kate was dumb for thinking that taking a job at a huge pharma company would allow her to have any kind of creative freedom or take any risks. The only worse places to have that kind of job would be a big bank or a major political party. And then quitting after one assignment was stupider. And it is still not clear to me if the other company's migraine pill is legitimate or if they are a crooked company that made a future date rape drug. I did like Ann's ending though. Alice being in Australia will be a good break for both of them. It will stop Ann from stressing over the little things, and it will hopefully show Alice that when you are on your own on another continent you have to have your shit together. I also liked the ending montage with all the characters that was really well done. Kate sleeping in a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man shirt was probably one of the best shout outs like that I have seen on tv in a long time. I hope so too. Even if there were some issues with the last few seasons she is very funny and talented. I think the last time there was a Canadian comedy series I actually looked forward to watch it was probably the early seasons of Trailer Park Boys.

Freaks And Geeks - General Discussion
Kel Varnsen replied to David T. Cole's topic in Freaks And Geeks
Wow I thought that was just a funny bit, because until just now I had no idea that John Francis Daly directed the Dungeons and Dragons movie. -
I think that is the same problem. A "US" nuke goes off in the CR and it looks like NATO is escalating things against Russia. Although I am not sure how setting it off in the tunnel is that much better. Like sure 20,000 people aren't dead but a "US" nuke still destroyed what looked like a pretty major piece of infrastructure, plus the surrounding mountain. It's not like you could keep that story quiet. And once the story becomes public it would mean the same Russian response. So how is that a big win?

S03.E02: Chapter Eighteen - The Mines of Mandalore
Kel Varnsen replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Mandalorian
So if he had gotten the IG droid to work he would have gone straight to Mandalore without stopping to talk to her? -
S03.E01: Chapter Seventeen - The Apostate

So if Mandalorian armour is so strong that even a light saber can't cut through it, then how does that little cutting torch the armourer had work? -
S03.E02: Chapter Eighteen - The Mines of Mandalore
Kel Varnsen replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Mandalorian
The whole travel route that Mando takes seems weird to me. He leaves Nevarro because he needs a droid before he goes to Mandalore, but he flies to the planet next to Mandalore and tells Bo about his plan. Then he flies to Tatooine to see the mechanic lady looking for a part for the IG droid. If he had gotten that part he would have flown back to Nevarro before going to Mandalore. But he didn't so he flew there directly. But if he needed the droid or droid part first, why the stop on Bo's planet that was right next to his final destination? Especially since isn't Tatooine in the middle of nowhere not close to anything? -
I'm So Disappointed In You: Celebrity Missteps

It's a skiing accident right? Maybe the eggs threw off her centre of gravity/balance. -
The weirdest thing about the Vertigo remake is what is the benefit for RDJ? It's not like he needs the money, and when it comes to good roles he can probably one of the few actors who can do whatever he wants and someone will fund it. And unless it is the perfect movie it would face a ton of scrutiny from critics and Hitchcock fans.
-
Wow of all the sort of big Hitchcock movies Vertigo seems like the hardest one to redo (although of his big ones it's probably my least favourite). In it Jimmy Stewart is a full on obsessed crazy weirdo (and hardly any kind of hero). I wonder if they will keep it that way or kind of lighten the main character so he is not so creepy. Although if they were going to remake a big Hitchcock movie, The Birds, North by Northwest or Rear Window seem like better choices.

I just figure it is because Jamie Lee Curtis has been working in Hollywood for decades and probably knows a significant number of the members of the academy voting for her award. Because the scene at the end of the end of the movie where Stephanie Hsu is outside the laundromat with Yeoh and trying to leave is some of the strongest and most memorable acting I have seen in a long time. And I don't think it was just Michelle Yeoh carrying the scene.

For that matter how did Greer get past police when he showed up? His ID in his wallet wouldn't say "CIA OFFICER" would it? And I am not even really sure why Radek was trying to kill Petr? Weren't they working together? Was it all just because Petr was talking to Greer and Radek thinks he sold him out?

The first little while would also be the worst because you would have people completely freaking out about how there are now walking mushroom people. Once that settles down I would think the survivors would realize they have a ton of guns and infected aren't really that smart. I mentioned in the mall episode how one infected in the mall would be like if there was a bear loose in a mall.

FilmNight: Movies you watched recently
Kel Varnsen replied to Rushmoras's topic in Everything Else About Movies
I watched Greyhound last night with Tom Hanks on Apple TV. I hadn't seen it before and it was pretty good. I liked how it covered on relatively short event in time (a convoy of allied ships crossing the Atlantic in WWII) and showed how brutally stressful it would have been. The only thing I thought was dumb was the opening scene was Hanks meeting with his girlfriend before he ships out and wanting to get married (she said to wait until he comes home). It just seemed stupid since Hanks is in his 60s and his character would probably be at least in his 50's and it just seemed dumb that in 1942 he and his girlfriend played by Elizabeth Shue wouldn't have already been married. It seems like more of a trope you would have for a soldier or sailor in their 20's going off to war. It also didn't really add anything to the story. -
This was a fun episode. I definitely remember the Rocky Sucks era, I even remember changing it when I went to the In Your House Rock Bottom PPV event in Vancouver where he was full on heel. It's crazy that a year and a half after this episode Dwayne was heading his own PPV's. One thing I did find funny was the subtle mentions of Hogan not being in the WWF anymore what with the Hollywood comments at the wedding. Also nice subtle confirmation that Vince is an asshole what with him RSVPing for the wedding and not showing up.

That makes me wonder though, if there was a vaccine and it worked and there was a way to actually get it to people around the world, would enough people accept it for it to be effective? It's not like there isn't a real world equivalent of that situation. And there are probably a lot of people out there who wouldn't trust anything from the fireflies. That is always my big suspension of belief with these types of stories. Sure infected would seem scary. But it feels like once humanity accepts that they are there then fighting back again shouldn't be that hard. They can't seem to use tools or weapons and it doesn't seem that they can organize into an army or do any kind of coordinated group attacks.

I feel like a lot of those bits are probably just standard reporter movie tropes. Like fighting with the editor, getting friendly and bringing coffee for the cops who help you out, getting people to talk off the record and montages of digging through piles of documents. It's probably been 15 years since I have seen All the President's Men but I feel like a lot of these kind of things probably show up there too. I did like how hear there was the subplot about the reporters calling out the police department for the crappy job they were doing.
-
I actually think having her be a Shield agent turned bad makes her way more interesting than what she was before. Because young female non-powered super spy who is really good at fighting is such a common MCU character type. And of all of them the only thing that really made Sharon stand out was that she was Peggy's niece (which isn't much).

The weirdest part of that whole plot was that Grace finds the mom unconscious and doesn't even think to call her first responder husband who is sitting in the car right outside. I mean I know Judd isn't a paramedic, but he certainly has way more first aid training than Grace does. And if he called Tommy he would be better able to understand what she is saying.

Watched this last night on Disney Plus. It was pretty good, although I do love a good reporter works hard to uncover the truth movie. Although it wasn't as good as Zodiac or Spotlight. Keira Knightley did a pretty good job as the main character. Although it is weird seeing her play a real grown up since I still picture her as the version of her from Pirates of the Caribbean, although she was only 18 when Curse of the Black Pearl Came out in 2003. Her American accent was pretty good. Probably the most interesting thing for me was just seeing how easy it would be to get away with murdering someone in the past, as long as you didn't have an obvious motive or there was an eye witness. The investigative tools that cops had were so limited. If course it also means a lot of people or ok probably went to prison for something they didn't do.

I am fine with not going the friends route for Sharon and Natasha, since I find MCU Sharon super boring. If they wanted to pair up Natasha with any other super spy friend (besides Hawkeye) either Maria Hill or Nakia would have been more interesting.

I didn't think he was good either, but he was a kid so that is kind of to be expected. Plus he could have been the best child actor ever, he could have been Marlon Brando reincarnated as an 8 year old, and it still wouldn't have done much to improve that movie. To be fair it seems like what little overall vision for that story that they had was kind of screwed when Carrie Fisher died before they had even started shooting Rise of Skywalker. Since my understanding was that Leia would have had a much bigger part of she was alive.
