Rookie shortstop O'Neil Cruz of the Pirates was named after Paul.
  2. I might not have done the right search terms, but it looks like none of Gordon's restaurants in Las Vegas are available on GrubHub. (The concept that he mentioned sounds like a ghost kitchen.)
  3. I wonder if they are setting up opposing story arcs with Harper and Jasmin. Harper has all of the confidence and really can't be at a higher level of success at this point in her career, while Jasmin lacks confidence and has struggled to "write her own story". Is Harper on her way down while Jasmin is on her way up?

  5. I'm actually surprised it's not higher. If LIV really wanted to recruit from the PGA, they would let dudes where shorts.
  6. It's bullshit (but not surprising) how casually conference commissioners are committing unpaid kids (NIL is not a salary from an employer), primarily in football, to ever increasing workloads in the pursuit of profit. The expanded playoff for football is a given at this point. If the proposed sixteen team format is approved, that means the teams in the final will play 12 regular season games, a conference title game and 3 games to get to the final. 16 games. And that doesn't take into account the possibility of conference playoffs in the rapidly growing mega-conferences.

    The NBA

You do realize that Rob Pelinka is the GM (with LeBron as the shadow GM)? Magic is just a cheerleader at this point.
  10. I don't think Warner Bros/Discovery will cancel Last Week. But after reading about how the new company is taking a chainsaw to content (Batgirl, HBO Max) I really wonder if the TPTB will put pressure on the show to change, both financially and legally. This doesn't seem like a regime that would give the greenlight to a project like Eat Shit Bob.

I guess there is a regulation on their length, but boy, it feels like some of these base running gloves are the size of jai alai gloves.
  12. One of my favorite scenes is when Carmy is at the high end restaurant and his chef is yelling random numbers at him in order to mess with his expediting. Expediting is one of the most mentally taxing things I have done (including working differential equations in grad school). You literally have to know everything that is happening in the kitchen. But at the end of the night, you feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. And then you drink, heavily. I agree that the single take scene in the restaurant was impressive, but my favorite single take was Carmy at the relatives of addicts meeting. It's a five minute long single shot, uninterrupted, monolog by Jeremy Allen White where he sells the shit out of Carmy's messy relationship with his brother. I'm pretty sure that's not a real thing. Once you open a can, the sterile content inside is exposed to contaminants and it would be unsafe to just seal it up again. Kind of like opening a jar of tomato sauce, putting the lid back on it and putting it back in the pantry instead of the refrigerator. Doesn't matter how tight you screw the lid on.
  13. Bloom told Harper the story of how his salesperson at Goldman Sachs made it clear that she was acting on behalf of Goldman, and not necessarily his best interests. And he told Harper that he couldn't work with someone who put the firm before him. So she made a decision. On the other hand, Eric is all about Pierpoint. But I think he is acting in good faith with the advice/marching order he gives Harper. Making a deal is one thing, he's trying to teach her the politics of making repeated deals with a variety of clients over time. Word about her burning a client is going to get around and there is only so long she can live off Bloom's trades.
  14. Large cast, but the character of Harper is central to the show. If you like show like Succession and Billions, I recommend it.
  15. I think Harper can't help herself. It's about revenge, but it's also about power. She's at the point where she wants want to define the terms of her deal. I think Bloom has already game planned the options presented by Harper, and probably others she hasn't considered. She's just confirms one of his priors. I agree that luck played a big role, (what happens if Anna has her purse?) Luck is not a sustainable strategy. I wonder if it will come to bite her in the ass. Glad to see that Gus might play a greater role. He seemed to be too smart, and interesting to be relegated to being the landlord of a Pierpoint flophouse. Eric was a veteran of Long Term Capital. They were a hedge fund whose collapse brought the global financial system to the brink back in the nineties. He's seen some shit. Is that last scene the first time Harper wore short sleeves that showed off her tats? As for her name, I wonder if it is a combination of Harpur (the original of Binghamton University) and Stern, the famous school of business at NYU.
  16. I am watching the show Industry, which is about Black American woman who is trying to navigate her way in the world of high end London finance. The main character is played by Myha'la Herrold and what I find really interesting is how her hair is part of her character. In the first season, she is essentially a entry level apprentice straight our of college. She wears her hair in braids. Not unusual for a Black woman, but unusual for the world of finance. In the second season, she switches to a slicked back bun at work but wears her hair naturally off hours. And, at one point, her photo is featured in a corporate pitch deck and she is photoshopped as having a straightened hairstyle that makes her look 50, It's not an explicit story, but it makes sense if you know about Black hair.

I'm not predicting the playoffs, but this is a team that managed to go 8-8 with Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges at QB. They'll be OK.

Amazing, a Yanks/Red Sox game runs for 2;15 Impossible.
  19. The big bank heist in Heat. People will continue to rob banks, but to update the old phrase "That's not where the money is." In the age of the internet, why risk life and limb on the big score when you can sit at home and send out malware that allows you to extort companies? Or figure out scams to rob people of their crypto-currency?
  20. I think it would count. If for no reason than it is a fantastic narrative. One question is if the child (by the next season) will have a cult following like the Mars born main character in Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. I'm sure Dev will have figured out a way to transfer human conscious to robots by then.

  23. This show can be so frustrating. At times it can be very compelling The North Korean astronaut, the crew voting to stay on Mars, Molly heading back into the building. . . And at the same time it can leave you wondering "What??" Ellen thinks she can survive an impeachment vote because Dems like lesbians? Pam put her entire relationship life on hold for decades pining for a woman who was so deep in the closet that married a man an raised a kid with him? I am still am unclear what the writers are trying to do with Margo. It feels like she gets a relatively sympathetic portrayal even though she has been in a decades long espionage effort. And that apartment in Russia had to come with an ongoing price. Add me to the group that thinks the Manifest Destiny theme this season was not a good look. The day she is defined by who she is instead of who she is with (Ed, Danny, her other ex, Dev) she dies. 😥
  24. If Mika knows her value, why is the show still called Morning Joe?

The biggest problem I have with it is that it evokes nostalgia for an era where the game was still segregated. James Earl Jones' speech about it "reminds us of all that was good" is embarrassing.
