Ack!  I just read the Globe and Mail review that Diana tweeted a link to and it spoiled two lines from the 1st and 2nd episodes, revealing something that, as a reader, I know is a change from the book in a key scene.

Must.  Stop.  Reading.

Spill! PM me! It better not be

removal of the scene where Jamie is all outraged at Claire waxing her "OXTERS!"

The episode threads are open now. If you want to move your discussion about the premiere, please do so. For those who want to wait until tomorrow, sit tight and don't get tempted. Cheers.

I missed this review, so posting the link here: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/television/john-doyle-outlander-is-carried-on-the-shoulders-of-a-strong-woman/article29541017/

Very positive review by John Doyle. I have to say, I particularly relish the positive reviews from men. Not that I "need" validation or anything, but it is satisfying to see a man appreciate Claire's story, and acknowledge the rarity of its kind.

Outlander is the featured review in the TV section of this week's Entertainment Weekly.  They gave it a "B".  I'd prefer they got an "A" of course but being the featured review is a big deal so that's another piece of significant press for the show.  My favorite part was this:

A star vehicle for Caitriona Balfe as Claire . . . as well as for Sam Heughan as Jamie . . . Tobias Menzies, who might be the best thing about the show.

The reviewers can't decide which of the big three they love the most.  I am totally okay with that.

I know, I know, I am BIASED. But I don't think Tobias Menzies is "the best thing about this show." Nope. Maybe the most known actor, since Cait and Sam were unknowns.  As I mentioned when the show first started, I had no plans on watching this, because I wasn't too keen on the buiks when I read them 20 odd years ago, but it was seeing who they cast for Jamie that had me quickly changing me mind and giving the buiks another chance. So, for me, Sam is the best thing about this series.

Yeah, yeah, it's Claire's story, Claire's journey, etc. etc., blah, blah, blah, blah...

Totally agree re Sam.  Sam had me 100% last season during the Wentworth Prison episode.  He was so Jamie.  I think Caitriona is wonderful too, but Sam is the one really impressing me.  I don't even like Jamie that much in the books, but I love Sam's portrayal despite his (imo) marginalization.

I'm not seeing any spoilers - what am I missing?

The review was posted before the premiere and offers details that may be slightly altered from the books.

Tom and Lorenzo are continuing their episode recaps this season and another poster has put it up the link in the No Book Talk episode thread, but I'll share it here. It has some very interesting points about Claire as a classic adventure hero: http://tomandlorenzo.com/2016/04/outlander-glass-darkly/

Whoo hoo!  Outlander pulled in more than double the number of viewers for the second season premiere than they did for the first season premiere and (this is important) the number are up 19% versus episode 109 -- the first episode after last year's mid-season hiatus.

http://deadline.com/2016/04/outlander-ratings-season-2-starz-debut-high-the-girlfriend-experience-1201736263/

I'm really happy to hear this because one of the blogs I listen to (The Scot and the Sassenach) made much of the fact that ratings fell significantly for the last two episodes of season 1.  We all know what happened after that -- lots of people declared they were done with the show, online reviewers quit, a definite schism appeared between those who thought Wentworth Prison / To Ransom a Man's Soul were Emmy-worthy quality television and those that thought they were akin to "torture porn."  I have been wondering what was going to happen with the ratings when the show came back.  I hoped that the lengthy #DroughtlanderDeux would mellow the negative opinions and I hoped positive press (like three, count'em THREE Golden Globe nominations) would more that counteract the negative reaction to the violence in the season finale.  Looks like it worked.  Well, that combined with STARZ's pull-out-all-the-stops PR blitz for season 2.

So . . . now that the ratings are official, I expect the announcement of a renewal for a 3rd season any second now.  Tick tock STARZ, tick tock.

For those of you interested in the costuming of Outlander, check out Tom and Lorenzo's Fabulous and Opinionated website.  They are starting a series of Outlander Style posts, in addition to their episode reviews, that cover the costume design of each episode.  The boys did a similar set of posts for Mad Men, and really opened my eyes to how much the costuming affects one's view of the story and characters.  And no worries about spoilers -- they have a strict no-spoiler policy!

That website has destroyed my productivity for the afternoon.  They really don't like the way Cait and Sam look on red carpets and the like.  Let's just say that they are constantly lamenting how two smoking hot people have either terrible stylists or no stylists at all.  Sometimes I think they're nitpicky about Cait because she looks gorgeous no matter what but I feel vindicated for always thinking that Sam could do better with his hair and clothes.

I discovered TLo through their Mad Style recaps and love that they are doing fashion analysis for Outlander. They can be the hardest on stars who aren't living up to their fashionista potential and are boring/bad dressers (in TLo's opinion, of course). Their posts about Cait and Sam often get them a lot of traffic in the comments section...I shouldn't be surprised by the defensiveness. It's not like they're saying Cait and Sam are bad people or untalented actors or the show sucks, just that they're probably not making any best dressed lists. It's not the end of the world, or going to get the show cancelled or anything. I usually end up thinking Cait looks nice if a bit boring and 90s, and get stuck on the awkwardness of Sam's non-Jamie hair. They have the same issue that you saw with many of the Mad Men actors, with the period costuming often being more flattering than their present-day looks.

Anyway, Tom and Lorenzo's fashion recaps will be a nice little publicity boost for the show and just might bring in some new fans. With MM, I remember the recaps attracting people who didn't watch the show at first, but were drawn in by the pictures of all the pretty costumes.

Here's my theory about why they are including Tobias in the media coverage so much. They want to give him this exposure because we won't be seeing Frank or BJR that much or anymore this season.

HBO just announced that Game of Thrones has been renewed for another season.  Why hasn't Outlander's renewal be announced by STARZ?  (I mean, you just KNOW they are going to renew it.)  I have a theory.  I just learned from Terry's latest blog post that she and Ron are on a well-deserved vacation -- on a cruise.  Now I think the delay is due to STARZ's desire to wait until Ron and Terry and are back in LA (or at least on dry land) and available for interviews.  Gotta maximize the PR impact from an announcement like that!

ETA:  My link to the blog post above is behaving a bit wonky -- it takes you to the second page.  Here the beginning.

I got the distinct impression from that blog post that Ron was alone on the cruise.  She said that she got his permission to post it because it was a "personal letter" presumably from him to her.

I'm going to worry about the third season right up until the time that they announce it.  Apparently ratings for the second episode dropped quite a bit from the season premiere.

I'm not at all worried about it being renewed. Outlander is Starz's bread and butter. I imagine their streaming subscription rate to get the premiere early was bigger than anticipated.

I agree that I think it's about PR timing. I'm not sure what they're waiting for, but I think there's method in the madness. As nice as it is for Game of Thrones fans to know the show's renewal so quickly, Diana releases her books exponentially faster than George RR Martin. I can wait to hear for the renewal. :)

Ya know I have been thinking about Ron alone on his cruise and wondering if maybe he is

contemplating season 3 sea voyages while out there....(thinking hopefully here).

My new theory is that they don't want the news of a season 3 for Outlander to get lost in the PR juggernaut that is the season premiere of Game of Thrones.  I'm on pins and needles waiting to see if the big question (i.e., the status of Jon Snow) will be answered in the first episode.  If that question is answered I think the internet will explode.  So waiting another week or two for Outlander's big news may make perfect sense.

So I just finished listening to the 2nd podcast by The Scot and the Sassenach (#TSatS) that focused on episode 202 and they kicked the whole thing off by addressing the "elephant in the room" (their words) -- the fact that STARZ has not announced a renewal for this show (see my concerns and rationalizations above).  They went on to point out that STARZ's modus operandi is to announce renewals very early.  They did it for Outlander season 2 immediately after the airing of the very first episode.  According to TSatS, they followed a similar pattern for two other major STARZ shows (Power, and one other whose name I have forgotten) and they went on to say that for Black Sails STARZ has historically announced the renewal of the following season BEFORE the first episode of each season aired, including the most recent (3rd) season (season 4 is filming as we speak.)  The only time that TSatS can recall STARZ waiting to announce was when they announced the 3rd and FINAL season of Da Vinci's Demons after about seven episodes of season 2 had aired.  TSatS then went on to say how important Outlander is to STARZ and even though it probably costs twice a much as Black Sails they are sure it will be renewed so really we viewers shouldn't be worried.  Right.  I wasn't worried before they shared all that with me.  NOW I 'm worried.  I still think the delay is mainly an attempt to get out of the way of the Gamer of Thrones PR juggernaut but now the fear has been hatched in my brain that they might announce a 3rd and final season like they did for Demons.  Ugh.

It doesn't really make sense that they'd be waiting for GoT to premiere in order for the renewal news to not get lost in other GoT premiere news.  This show started well before the new GoT season will start and it airs on a different night.  If they didn't want to be in the shadow of GoT, they would have (1) already announced a renewal and/or (2) aired the season well outside of the typical Game of Thrones season.  So no, the GoT theory doesn't make any sense at all and I think it's concerning that they are waiting.

One theory that would make sense is if all the contract negotiations have yet to be finalized.  Not just the actors, writers, directors, etc, but also simply the budget and number of episodes.  Sometimes that stuff gets held up, especially when a network airs a new platform (like STARZ did this year) and is unsure just how many new subscribers a show is bringing in.

Add to that the question of where they will be filming.

They have to pull the trigger on where they'll film the Ridge - Scotland, America, or somewhere else.

That would probably affect budget, film schedule, and number of episodes, as well.

ETA: OR, if they want to be playful,

they could make the non-book readers think there might not be need for a season 3. They don't know Jamie lives. They don't know Claire goes back. How intriguing would it be for after Roger says "Jamie didn't die in Culloden" to have the screen go black and say "Outlander returns [insert date]. And THAT is the renewal notice.

Has anybody else seen the t-shirts Graham Mctavish is selling (for charity)? He's all over Twitter about it and just said he will sign any bought in the next 24 hours. They crack me up, just had to finally order one.
