I watched a show today that I have never seen (or heard of).  Now I can't remember the name of it..it was two guys who buy a house, fix it up and then sell it.  Flippers.  I think it was in Boise?  Boise Boys?  My channel guide won't let me go back and look.  Anyway...it was one of the best of the flip shows I have watched.  The guys were nice, not a lot of drama, and it did not involve women with soap opera hair.  It was fun to watch..hope HGTV is going to pick it up for regular rotation.  I know, like there aren't enough flip shows on. But this one was like a breath of fresh air.  One of the guys was married with what seemed to be a slew of kids and the other guy was a little rotund and oozed good cheer.

Found this on HGTV's web site.

An Odd Couple of Homes

Texas contractor Clint Robertson and Idaho designer Luke Caldwell have an odd pair of homes to choose from for their next investment property: a dated farmhouse and a midcentury modern ...

About the Show

Polar opposite friends Luke and Clint take an unconventional approach to house flipping in their hometown of Boise, Idaho. While refined designer Luke likes to reach for the stars, rugged contractor Clint remains focused on their bottom line. With an endless inventory of old houses to choose from, the only decision this dynamic duo needs to make is which house to transform next.

It seems that the last few days, Fixer Upper has been on almost constantly.  In between reruns of House Hunters (which I don't mind all that much compared to the flipping reruns).  Has anyone else noticed it?  Maybe HGTV should spin off/create a couple of new networks...one for house flippers and another just for Chip, Joanna and The Twins.  That way they could create some new programming for the mothership. Win-Win for everyone.

Yes!!!!! It's so annoying, as I stopped watching Fixer Upper last year, and can't stand the twins and never watch them, Any version of House Hunters is preferable.

I look at the schedules, and they're always like that, or with things that don't interest me, Beach something or Island something.
It doesn't seem that much new, at least interesting new, is being made.
The Scott brothers had a new version of  Bro vs Bro, but I quit watching that several years ago.
DIY is same, with repeats mostly.
Alison Victoria post this on Facebook.  Flipping, but I like her and she always seems to do real work.

And it seems like they have been on all morning today.  I've been getting house and food ready for a cookout; I switch HGVT on and off to see what might be on.  Hoping, at least, for a Flea Market Flip marathon...or "where are the househunters now" marathon.  But nope.  Chip and Joanna.  I guess since they are the All-American family, it is only natural that they would be on during the 4th.  Sarcasm.  I don't mean to trash them; I actually like them and think they are genuine.  I am just sick-to-death of them; they seem to be everywhere.

Same here on being so tired of them on all the time, especially since I don't watch. At least Beachfront Bargain hunt starts at 1. That I can take.

HGTV is the channel right after Food Network in my U-verse lineup. I am ashamed to admit that I kinda like to watch the old unseen episodes of Chopped that they show when I can't find anything else to watch. I mentioned that because a couple days ago I flipped the channel over to HGTV during a commercial break and the first thing I saw was a promo for Fixer Upper saying new episodes were coming soon. It immediately made me think of this thread. I let out an audible sigh when it came on.

I loved Bryan's older shows, but isn't his wife on with him now?  Didn't care for her.  When he was building his houses, she was always pouting and wanting most expensive things, and that first house was so bland and boring, all walls light green.
I would love to to see new Disaster DIY, or even repeats.
One episode of some new show that Scott Mcillivray did was shown, he picked from 3 homeowners to do a partnership with them on something.
I just want Mike Holmes doing real Mike Holmes things, not fronting some contest show, or even doing his son's house.
Missing the "trades," Frank, Martin, Dominick, Gary, Steve, et al.

On the other hand, Canada should get back the Scott brothers, and David and Hilary.

I would definitely welcome a new "where are they now?" ep of HH.  They haven't shown one in a long time, have they?  Since Fixer Upper is the current marathon show, I wonder if that's due to the strife on Flip or Flop.  Regardless, they can miss me with these marathons.  It's easy to OD on a show you like, much less one you don't.  I don't mind Chip and Joanna, but I've never liked Fixer Upper.  Their style is horrendous.

I don't know if there was a thread on Windy City Flip, so I'm just posting here.  Wasn't impressed.  It's not like it was bad or anything, it just follows the same bland formula that all the flipping shows use.  Choose and buy a property, run into some type of structural issue (in this case, the walls collapsing) wring hands over "mounting costs", design said house to modern trends, and voila.  Lather, rinse, repeat.  This channel is just so boring now.

Despite Alison's assurances, my cable box doesn't say another episode will air (re-run or new) for at least 2 weeks.  Maybe they're just testing this one out?

There's a genre topic for flipping shows, although some have individual ones.

Yikes! The owner of TLC - trashy show channel, is now in charge of all Scripps programming? Not feeling hopeful for the future of my favorite channels. Are we going to have Kate Gosselin on House Hunters?

Trying to find a silver lining, TLC is rebooting Trading Spaces.   Maybe they'll try to bring design shows in general, if not some classics to HGTV.

The HGTV urban oasis house remake in Knoxville is the ugliest makeover I've ever seen. No thanks. Not even worth entering.

You can take cash instead, I think. If not, sell it.  Better than winning one in Ann Arbor.

I read an article in New York magazine (not the New Yorker) that was very critical of HGTV and it's programming.  Unrealistic, unattainable re-dos and makeovers that are  basically house-porn and make people feel badly about their own homes and why they can't attain the same expensive finishes.  Sorry, run-on sentence.

Then yesterday, a blog appeared on my Facebook feed that said basically the same thing.  Can't remember the name of the blog, but it had been shared numerous times and there were tons of "agree" replies. The blog talked about almost all of the programming revolving around real estate and now, mainly flip shows.  The blog had been shared many times (which is how it appeared on my feed from a friend).

I am hoping that the repetitiveness of HGTV programming will at some point backfire and their ratings really and truly suffer.  They are either 1) putting on the cheapest shows they can possibly produce or 2) showing a total lack of care for what viewers might want; probably a mix of both.  I guess they have 24 hours a day to fill and it isn't easy.

It is sad when I think of how I used to look forward to HGTV...got excited when a new season of a show I loved would start.  There were not constant marathons and not a big emphasis put on relatives hosting shows.  Don't get me wrong...there is some programming that I do enjoy.  I like the Vintage Flip (is that the one with the mother/daughter redheads?)...like Flea Market Flip.  Other than that, I hate the rest of the flipping shows except the one with the guys from the Midwest.  I think they were from the Midwest.   I do like House Hunters (when they don't show the cookie-cutter houses) and like the "where are they now" shows.  Other than that, I don't watch the network much at all anymore.

I have to wonder what the ratings are like but they are probably very high.  I hope Discovery and TLC put on more "House" shows.  Not looking forward to Hildy on Trading Spaces.

It's hard to believe really.  It's as if you ate something you really liked, then decided that you'd have it every night, with just different condiments.
And DIY, the downmarket HGTV, is doing the same, and not even making new episodes of its staples, the Crasher shows.
The only hopeful thing to me, is that Mike Holmes is making a new show, like the original, but with his kids.  But it's only 6 episodes, in January.

At this point, I am down to just watching Flea Market Flip and House Hunters; especially the "Where are they now" episodes.  Sadly, neither has anything to do with actual basic home stuff, decorating or gardening. Everything else is either flip flip flip, Twins or Chip and Joanna.

I'll watch some Income Property sometimes, in 4 am repeats, but nothing else.
Why can't we deport the Property Brothers, David, and Hilary?
Trading Spaces is coming back to TLC, with some of the old designers.  You might like that.  January, I think.
I'm just glad I've got my Holmes on my DVR.

I should start keeping better track of the programming...writing it down or doing a spread sheet that lists, hour by hour, day by day, what shows are on.  Lately it is almost all Fixer Upper and all the incarnations of the annoying twins.  Who are probably nice guys but at this point...I could only hate watch.  I get a reflex reaction when I see those two...remote button and annoyance.

Yes, I know...people will say to just stop tuning in.  And I do.  But sometimes I just want to sit back and watch house stuff and be entertained.  Hokey comedy from the hosts of the shows..showing the families, etc...that is NOT what I want to see.

I catch repeats of Renovate to Rent sometimes.
Danny & Drew, college roommates turned business partners, buy properties to rent them out in Minneapolis.
Nice guys, no fakey stuff.
They look at 2 or 3 properties, decide what it will cost to renovate, vs return, and do the job.
I think it used to be an hour, beause I remember when the prospective tenants would look around and comment, but the recent ones are half hour.

Just watched the dream home special.  What the heck, 52 minutes spent on one contractor lady tearing the house apart and putting it back together nearly single handedly and only about 8 minutes spent on the decorating?  I mean, the main area turned out to be a white box,so I guess that's not exciting, but neither is watching a 40 year old house being torn apart.

I miss the old specials where you actually saw them choose the furnishings and talk about them.  I also miss the quality of Ethan Allen furnishings.  If I have a 2 million dollar house I'm not going to put ready to assemble furniture in it.

The 2018 Dream Home special was basically just a commercial for the vendors that provided the materials (Lowe's, Wayfair, etc.).  Nothing like the original Dream Homes where they constructed a house from the ground up and gave some background material on the area the home was built in.  And I agree, I preferred when a decorator chose quality furnishings, not IKEA-type stuff like they use now.

The entrance doors to the house are double glass doors, completely see-through, similar to walking into a store.  So much for privacy!  I guess the idea was you could see all the way through the house to the views on the opposite windows, but how impractical!  And the glass garage doors?  I guess that was so you can see the brand-new Honda Accord which is part of the prize package.  The garage also featured a chandelier.  Again, no privacy whatsoever.  Anyone would have a clear view of the interior of the garage from the street.  This had to be the most impractical house I have ever seen.

With Discovery buying Scripps could we see some mergers/closures/rebrands of some channels? Still Scripps channels focus more on home improvement/DIY/Food/country living programming which the Discovery networks don't feature really.
They will hardly get rid of the established brands Discovery, ID, Science, TLC, Animal Planet, OWN or Velocity. Could the axe the Spanish networks or sell Discovery Family? American Heroes Channel, Discovery Life and Destination America get first run shows and have their own focus. All their networks have their own focus what is the need to axe any? Excluding the Spanish channels, OWN and Discovery Family (Part owned) Discovery Communications operate 9 cable channels in the US they operate 12 in the UK. Why would the choose to shut any completely? The Scripps networks have a different type of programming
Could the do something to gac (most likey get rid of music videos the other programs on that channel that air in primetime are stuff that Discovey would air). Maybe rebrand/rename to Fine Living Network or HGTV2 Scripps seemed to be pushing this brand worldwide along with Food Network and Travel Channel.
The other channels will problay be kept because it seems like Discovey is interested in all there channel except gac and would do great under the Discovey brandings?

Yeah, this is a definite  "give me the cash option" if I (unlikely!) win the prize. ;)

I often wonder about how many people take the home rather than cash. It'd usually mean moving across the country. I also side-eye the declared value of some of the things.

Needed a break from politics this morning, so (with apprehension) turned on HGTV.  I say "apprehension" because I expected to see 1)Property Brothers or 2)Fixer Upper. Or a marathon of the few Home Towns.   Surprise!  There was a show on called "Rehab Buffalo" or some such.  I really liked it.  It had the stuff that you usually, always, see in these shows.  But.

The couple was not cloying and the house they did was really interesting.  I loved the period details...the "finding" of a mantle, taking up carpet on stairs and finding a newspaper from .. maybe the Harding Administration?  The staging wasn't too bland, either.  Really high-end looking appliances, wallpaper!, painstakingly restored floors, stained and leaded glass windows.  Nirvana for me.

Yes, it was mostly the same formula but I found the couple and the house refreshingly different.  So I know it will not make the regular lineup.  Because we must have four or 150 Property Brother shows, flip shows that involve the same bland houses, reruns of Fixer Upper for the next 20 years and now...it seems Chip and Joanna will have a gardening show.

Haven't we, for years, been begging for a gardening show?  With expert hosts?  But we get Chip and Joanna; who, to be fair, are cash cows for the network.  But at least this morning, I got to look at a truly old house that seemed to be rehabbed beautifully.  With two hosts that don't put me off.  Yet.

Are you in US or Canada?  I haven't seen any commercials, but I don't watch DIY much anymore, and it was my favorite.
I loved Disaster DIY, and still record Leave It to Bryan when it shows up.
I thought I'd like his house and cabin shows, but Sarah pouted and seemed to shop by price tag.

It's what she does best, I think.
I thought Bryan was so great, and funny, working with homeowners, so it was a big disappointment when he built his own places.
I'd seen him work on cottages in other shows, and expected a place where you felt ok to come in wrapped in a towel.
And they build this huge place, and the dining room looked like a Tudor banqueting hall.  Nothing inviting or cozy. I think she also had a walk-in closet.

Restored with the Fords-- brother and sister team ip to white out an old brownstone....seriously everything was painted white. One ceiling was black.

It was a fucking blizzard and hard to see moulding, brick, or wood work. Wasted the characteristics of the place of this young couple.  Why did they buy a  such an old place I'd they liked modern?  It coitus have been classy with minimal details. They whited it out.

I don't see much of interest anymore, and not a lot on DIY.
I've been sick of the Property Brothers for several years, likewise all the versions Love It or List It, Flip & Move, couple designing.
Like many channels, the thinking seems to be "if one is good, 50 is better."

I watch HH International once in a while if it's a location I am interested in, but that is it. I used to enjoy the old programming but it's now gotten so formulaic and they keep cramming repeats down our throats. I enjoy a lot of the DIY shows.

Just saw where they are going to start showing Boise Boys regularly.  I can't remember the night, but it will have a time slot of 11:00.  My question is why is it on so late?  Why not air the series at 8:00 or 9:00?  I usually don't like Flip Shows but this one, for me, is kind of nice.

Link to comment

I guess Boise Boys didn't catch on.  I saw a couple of episodes today for the first time and liked some things and not others, but, I would like to see more.  I didn't find a thread for it, and if it's old, there may be a limited number in the can.

I just read somewhere about what HGTV shows have been renewed.  I don't think all of them were mentioned...I didn't see anything about Boise Boys; but since I liked it, I figured it wouldn't be renewed.

Apparently The Property Brothers are getting another show!  Or at least one is in the works..and that awful Las Vegas flip show has been renewed.  It looks like all, or most of the flip shows have been renewed.  The article mentioned the high ratings of the renewed shows; so I guess I am completely out of step with the network.  Or maybe I skew too old.  Anyway, about the only thing I will stop on if channel surfing is the House Hunting shows (and they wear thin after a couple of hours) and Flea Market Flip.  I can't remember the name of the show that was filmed in Virginia - an old manor house, a likable family that was re-doing it and how they were making the house work form them...wedding venue, etc.  I loved it whenever I happened upon it.  Maybe it would be better suited for PBS.  Wait, it was on HGTV wasn't it?  Now I am wondering if it really was on PBS.

What would be nice is if HGTV constantly promoted other shows besides...Flip or Flop..The Twins..Love it or List it (cannot stand the male host)..and anything Chip or Joanna.  By the way, don't they have another show in the works since they quit the mothership?  I was watching something the other day and could not see the entire frame because the network was running some sort of promotion for Love it or List it.  Or Flip or Flop.  I guess I am too old to buy into the drama of Tarek and the ex...Cristina?  And they (the couple and the network) seem to be playing that for all it's worth.
