S01.E02: Song From the Year I Was Born

Recommended Posts

Wow, 1st post! The enthusiasm in this show is just out of this world!   LOL!!!!  I find it to be okay, but if something better comes on that I would enjoy, I would flip channels for sure. But I just can't 100% focus on this show. I think one of the reasons why is that it seems so bland, aka boring.  There is no one I really enjoy seeing on that show from the judges on down.  Very lackluster. Even the eliminations aren't interesting.

Oh my, Honey Boo Boo. I give her credit for trying - maybe she'll keep it up and drop a million pounds. Can do without the snarky face during rehearsals, not cute. Maybe production will throw us a bone and stop showing them.

Honestly?  I think Artem's a saint for putting up with it.  And she's not going to last more than another couple of weeks if she can't do anything but shake her booty while her pro dances around her.

But the one routine that really disappointed me was the Salsa that Cheryl put together for HER kids.  I agree with Val in particular. It was a good performance, but it wasn't a Salsa. That's on Cheryl for not putting nearly enough content into the routine, and I hope she listened and does better by her kids next week.

Best dance of the night goes to Team Brandon.  That was a terrific Jive with plenty of content, and it's the first time I've seen a celebrity do better and sharper kicks and flicks than her pro.  Team Brandon for the win!

Sadly, I was afraid that team Hayley was in serious jeopardy going into tonight (I really thought it was supposed to be double eliminations all the way through....oh well). I just felt like he wasn't the most natural dancer (although I was hoping that the other boy from Team Emma who has no rhythm would go instead, because I wanted to see a little more of Hayley in the mentor role), and he seemed to get lost in the shuffle. Getting stuck with the Paso Doble didn't do them any favors either.

Still, it should've been Honey Boo Boo who went. She is just awful, and IDRC that it might good for her health in some way to keep lasting on this show.

To me, the dancers at the top from last week pretty much stayed at the top. The A Team (Arianna/Aryton), Team Lindsay, Sky/JT all pretty much killed it again. Mandla & Brightyn did too, it was as the judges (shockingly) pointed out....in a glorified freestyle with only about 5 seconds worth of Salsa content.

I think Sky & JT are freaking adorable (Alan’s kids). I know Sky is an athlete—skate and surf—but she’s a performer for sure. Wonder if there’s any dance experience. I watched part is SYTYCD jr’s (Hated it) and disliked JT, but he seems to partner well and is fun to watch now. I enjoy people who look so happy when they dance, whether pro or celebrity. When I see joy on their faces, it makes me smile. I do notice there’s much less behind the scenes in rehearsals, so we know less about the celebrities.

i think I’m enjoying the show so much because I have kids these ages (13 & 9) and one is very good at a performance sport. It’s fun to see so much talent in the young! I’m loving Brandon, Alan, Lindsay, and Cheryl’s teams. Lindsay’s little sis looks like she’s having a blast. I think these will be finalists. I like Witney’s team (the spelling bee kiddo is adorable) but don’t enjoy her little pro as much. She makes some odd faces.

hudson’s elimination was such bullshit. what was the audience thinking? sky and jt’s faces tho....

I figured it would be him or the other little boy (Jason?) from Raven’s world. Alanna has a lot of name recognition, so I figured she’d be around for at least another week.

I enjoyed the dances this week, but Sophia’s was not well planned. (I don’t watch the original show, so I don’t know the mentors or the team names). But her dress was too long, and the song was too slow. And the dance itself didn’t showcase her dance ability or showmanship.

I think Hudson just got lost in the shuffle of bigger personalities and more stand out performances.  The audience is voting for who they want to stay, not who they want to leave.  So I think it just means Hudson unfortunately didn't generate much loyalty either way.

I maintain I'm enjoying this show, but my only gripe is the age range feels too large.  Mackenzie Ziegler competing against 9 & 10 year olds looks weird, not that I think she's going to win.  It feels like she's on a different show than the other kids, or that she should be on regular DWTS.  Now I know to be completely fair, I think Mack and Miles were born in the same year.  It's just not quite so gratuitous because Miles is so tiny that I didn't even realize he was that old.  Not that Mack's size is her fault, it was just completely weird going from her to then little Sky/JT.

Not sure how she spells her name, but Brightyn, the pro on Cheryl's team IMO is a little star in the making.  Not that I necessarily think DWTS will be around that long, but I could totally see her on the regular show.

Ariana Greenblatt did a better jive than a lot of the adults do.  That is the team to beat from a combined skill and cuteness/personality factor.  Sky remains adorable and Miles did well tonight.   I don't know how many teams are in the finals, but i wouldn't be surprised to see Ariana and Sky as the last two standing over some of the older dancers.

The spelling champion seems like a really sweet child, but I want him to tell his partner to stop hanging all over him and picking him up ! She annoys the crap out of me.

Yes. She treats him like a doll, which, I mean, c’mon, he’s adorable. But yeah, he’s a dancer trying to win a competition. Not a toddler she’s babysitting.

I don’t understand the judges’s love for Scottie Pippen’s daughter.  I think she’s okay, not the worst, but they gush over her.  Her dancing seems flat at times and she doesn’t connect to the music at all.  But the judges are hyperbolic about her dancing.

I get that Kamri needs to back off a little where Akash is concerned, but I don't think there is anything wrong with the poor girl.  She probably is a child that is used to hugging everyone and anything and an adult in her life really just needs to step in and teach her that there is a time and place.  I don't think there is anything wrong with her hugging her partner, as long as he is okay with it, but it doesn't need to be constant.  As said, it tends to come off like she views him as a little doll.  I also feel like that is a conversation a parent or guardian should have with her and isn't something that should fall to Witney.  Though she could certainly bring it to their attention, especially if Akash seems uncomfortable.

What I do find amusing is how much the kids LOVE Jordan and seem to see him like this pseudo older brother, but they have no such relationship with Frankie, who basically comes off like he is there to do his job and get out.  Whereas Jordan posts endlessly about the kids and there are all sorts of pictures of the kids hanging all over him.  Also see Ariana full on running to Jordan last night post dance to wrap him in a huge hug.

I don't get it either. Her dancing is dry and she has zero personality. Looking at the teams left, I have a feeling Sophia and her partner will be eliminated next week. She's boring to watch.

I enjoy watching Jake dance. He is one of the the most generous pro partners out there. I want them to stay a while for that reason.

Dang it, I'm actually starting to like some of these kids.

Alana thinks she is all that and a bag of chips, but she's not, and I really wish she had been the one to be eliminated. Poor Artem and Tristan.

Skye is such a cute, spunky little spitfire. I like her.

If Mackenzie got all 8s for a quickstep that didn't look like a true quickstep, Ariana should have gotten at least one 9.

Speaking of Ariana, I really like her too, but for pete's sake, put that tongue back in your mouth! Also, I think she has a crush on Jordan :).

I enjoyed Sophia's dance as well. Was it perfect, no, but it wasn't horrible.

Stevie Wonder's son shows promise, let's see what he does next week.

Some of these kids can tumble. I get it but tumbling does not belong in ballroom dancing. It just doesn't.

That bothered me as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I had forgotten about Brightyn, but yes you are right about her.  She is quite a little dancer, full of talent. Her dance moves defy her age (12 years.)

I hope Tristen is being well paid for this since he's the only one doing anything resembling dancing.  90% of their routine is Alanna stomping around and shaking her hair while he moves double time to make it into an actual dance number.

Miles and Rylee were probably my favourite of the night, followed closely by Mandla and Brightyn, and Arianna and her partner.  I have a soft spot for Jason, probably because my kids watch Raven's Home like it's their job, and if nothing else the kid is so damn enthusiastic that I want to cheer for him even if he's not great.

I find it difficult to believe Artem is allowing Alana to shake her body the way she does. That movement is so far removed from Latin dance; she looks odd and childish. I don't care for her shenanigans during rehearsal. It is not cute. Alana......go home! Free Artem and Tristan!

I guess the tumbling didn't bother me in the sense that it didn't even register it was happening.  I remember the tumbling at the beginning of Sky's dance but that didn't bother me since it was the intro and it was mostly their entrance before they moved into plenty of actual cha cha.  Also if tumbling is being added as the tricks, I think it's also because it's the easiest kind of trick most of these kids can do and doesn't require partner work, which is a lot harder to teach them.  If anything, I'd argue Sky was underscored a tad and probably would have gotten another 8 or so had she gone later in the show.

I don't think Sophia is amazing but I did enjoy her first week jive a lot and I agree Jake is a really good partner.  I didn't love her routine this week and I also agree with the sentiment that she's another one I expect to go soon because she's going to get lost amongst bigger personalities.  Kids like Jason and Akash aren't fabulous dancers but they have big personalities.  Akash is going to get by because of his age and adorableness, so I guess Jason is a better example. Jason's not a great or natural dancer, but he can learn the steps and perform them with a ton of confidence and has a huge personality that will buy him some extra weeks.

Not that it's a surprise, but Rylee moves so much like her sister on the dance floor.

Oh my heart! I get so much joy from watching this show - I find all (well, most) of these kids to be so adorable! I love how they interact with Jordan and the pros seem genuinely thrilled to be working with them. I even love the judges. Mandy Moore is a gem - the perfect blend of constructive and encouraging. I wasn’t going to watch this since I generally avoid kid versions of show I watch, but I had nothing better the other day and now I’m hooked. I wish I felt this way about the adult version!

I do think some of these kids are very precocious, but I guess if you’re 9 and earning an adult size paycheck you’ve also earned the right to act a little grown up.

The only reason I taped this show this week was to see if Alana wears another fringe dress and spends most of her time doing that shoulder-roll-that-makes-her-body-shimmy move again.  Yes, she did.  I will tune in again next week to see if she has learned anything different.  I figure the only reason she is still in this thing is because her entire family is in the audience voting and the kids who aren't as famous aren't getting any votes.

Family members and guests of those on the show, both pros and celebs, are not allowed to vote as part of the audience vote.  The audience vote is solely people that are unrelated.  I also maintain the argument that Alanna is a lot more recognizable to folks in the audience than daughter of Scottie Pippen so I imagine some of her votes are also because she's known as compared to some of the other kids.

I didn't get to post last week, so here are my general impressions of the show so far...

The not-so-great:

-It seems like many of you are surprised by how much you are enjoying the show. However, I actually think I am having the opposite reaction. I was very excited beforehand by the concept of a junior DWTS show and was highly looking forward to the series. After these first two episodes though, while I still will watch, I am not quite as enthused as I originally was and am even a little annoyed by some things.

-For some reason, I was thinking that kids are like sponges and would pick up things faster and better. Also, that they have less inhibitions than adults, thereby resulting in much better overall dancing and performing than on regular DWTS. I forgot to take into account the awkwardness and lack of body control many kids in that 9-14 age bracket can have, as well as personality challenges, and being easily distracted.

-Lack of proper content seems to be an even more rampant issue here than on the regular show because the kid pros are all cross-trained. I disagree that the judges should not address lack of content in their comments. The kids are learning about dance, and it should be brought to their attention when they are not doing the assigned dance correctly. It also lets them know why they might be getting a lower score (although, unfortunately, none of the judges are actually scoring lower even if they mention the lack of content). The kid celeb, kid pro, and mentor are a team, just like the partnerships on the regular show.

On a more positive note:

-I think Ariana/Artyon and Sky/JT are the two best couples. They are absolutely adorable and Brandon and Alan are doing great jobs giving them good content and teaching them proper technique.

-JT and Jake! I thought they were great on SYTYCD Next Gen and it's nice to see how they've grown. JT's ballroom was quite so-so on SYTYCD, but he must have taken classes because he's much improved here.

-Jordan and Frankie are doing great jobs as hosts. But it helps that they aren't required to engage in the kind of filler and nonsense that Erin gets roped into by the voice in her ear.

-Mandy Moore is the best judge of the three. Val is articulate enough but he needs to be more specific and more technical.

I don't think it's an issue for Val to address lack of content.  I just want him to address that note to the pro mentor and not the children.  Like this week the way he framed it, it almost sounded like he was criticizing Mandla for the lack of content and spoke directly to him about it.  Why can't he just glance up to Cheryl and make that note to her.  I know Cheryl KNOWS the note is for her, but the kids aren't necessarily going to know that.  Though Mandla is old enough to get it, but the little ones won't know what to do with it.

I do agree though Val could get more specific with the technique critiques though.  I think he's probably not trying to overwhelm the kids, again, especially the little ones...but so far he's basically just told kids he wants to see better technique but nothing about said technique unless it's a positive critique--like he mentioned to Ariana week one that she was straightening her legs in the cha cha and how hard that was, etc.  He doesn't have to get super technical with them, but he can do what Mandy is doing...which is finding a way to give them constructive criticism on their level.

I can't believe I'm praising Mandy this much since her choreo makes me stabby, but one thing I think she is really good at is talking to the kids on their level, making it constructive, without talking down to them.  Adam basically just gushes over how cute they are like they are little dolls, which I get, but it kind of comes off like he's talking down to them or about them instead of engaging with them.

We'll find out if Honey Boo Boo stays in the competition much longer!

I wonder if the reason Honey Boo Boo is still in the competition is due to sympathy votes based on who her mother is.  No way will Momma June ever win Mother of the Year. I just laugh when I see Artem smile. I wish I had the ability to read Artem's mind. #freeArtem
