S06.E14: For the Sake of the Song

(edited)

I didn't see a thread for tonight's show, so I created one.  Hope it's ok!

I have a question: Did Gideon abuse Deacon or what?  I've seen it both ways in flashbacks.

I don't give a flying fuck about Jonah and Twig and Allana and Brad and Darius.  We got maybe 20 seconds of Will, Gunner & Avery together and THEY should be front and center singing and loving each other.

Two episodes left and they start a whole new arc with Gideon drinking again.

I'll stick it out.

Did anybody but me watch this?

I know the writers want us to fall for Twig but I can't stand him.  He knew Jonah was dogging Maddie and he let her get played.  No excuse for that.   None.   I mean I do like him more than Jonah but LOW BAR.

The literal best moment in the whole episode was Avery turning up at Will and Gunner's house.  Why was that 20 seconds?!?!?!?  WHY!?!?!?!?!?

Gideon was an alcoholic.  When he drank he abused Deacon.  When he wasn't drinking he had good times with Deacon.  He tends to remember the good times.  Deacon tends to remember the bad.   I suspect there were more bad times than good.

Are we supposed to be invested in Avery and purple hair? Are we? Because I’m not. I don’t want them to work out at all.

Deacon and his dad.. I mean.. it’s all so typical. None of this story is ground breaking by any means and I’m rolling my eyes because there hasn’t been enough time to give this story actual development and honestly there probably won’t be. The problem is we didn’t get enough time with this story, we spent so much time with deacon and Jessie’s relationship and now somehow we’re in this Deacon reconnects with his emotionally (and perhaps physically) abusing father.. not enough time for me to be impacted by it.

I couldn’t care less about Nashville The Teen series and Maddie and her boyfriend and the friend who likes her.

And I wish I cared about the cult storyline but I don’t.

How is this thing going to end? I feel like all we are doing is opening new storylines.

The storyline with Gideon chaps my ass. He's an abuser. He doesn't deserve forgiveness nor should Deacon feel compelled to grant it, and I'm pissed that the show is pushing that angle. I was really uncomfortable watching Deacon sing the song that Gideon "taught" him (beat into him). How Deacon got through it, I don't know. Scarlett, Nashville's town meddler, sucks for bringing Gideon to the show.

And now we know Gideon is still drinking, so we can stop with the good ol' golly gee Grandpa act. When he's drunk, we'll see him lash out.

I do give the show credit for Gideon saying that his dad drank and beat him and he did the same thing. Abuse is very often cyclical in families. It's healthy to break the cycle (Deacon) and that can sometimes mean cutting off ties with abusive family members. If the show doesn't have Deacon cut off Gideon, I'll be disappointed. Deacon deserves a peaceful life making pancakes.

WHY another week of Brad and Alannah with no resolution? Alannah is grossing me out almost as much as Brad. But surely we could've wrapped up this story this week.

Avery, listen to Alannah and be free from her! Run like the wind!

Yeah.. I hate the story with Deacon and his dad because like I said last week it reminds me of The OCs last season and how they had Ryan’s Dad come back and Ryan forgave him and we were suppused to forget how we were told he treated his family in the past.

I grant that the story is a sensitive one for me because my deadbeat father hasn't been in my life on a semi-regular basis since I was a child. Whoever is writing Gideon knows the abusive, narcissistic personality type.

The same person must be writing Brad's story.

I think at this point we can count on none of the storylines being resolved. They're just going to treat it like a regular episode & that's it.

Well, in my world, Juliette and Deacon need to collaborate on the next biggest country record ever. Get on stage together, and everyone else can eat their dust.

Question from someone who needs to catch up. I’ve been reading recaps but what is going on with Maddie and her music? The “career” she wanted sooooo much she emancipated herself for is no more? Just boyfriend drama?

Ok so when was this show canceled and how many episodes have they already written. This show seems like they got the cut after everything was finshed with these cluster fuck storylines. But I really thought they had more notice to tie everything together.

So this Daphne story is just going to make her one of the AI or voice winners where they win but never see the game and stardum they went on the show for but still locked into a 6 album deal. You know who like 14 year old music 14 year olds and I don't think she reaches that demographic.

Lol at asshole boyfriend for being pissed at shity friend for not stopping Maddie from finding out he was cheating on her. It's not his fault you can't keep it in you pants. And shity friend Bros and before Hoes.

For some reason I feel like purple hair is giving off murder vibes with Brad. Must be watching to many crime dramas because I also thought Daphne would find a dead grandpa at the end of the episode.

Of course this show makes Deacon remember nice times with his father so that when he finds out about the drinking he will be even more crushed. But how does he go from being a mean violent drunk to a secret closet drunk that no one knows he his drinking. And why is he back now and no one brought up the fact that he didn't show up when his daughter died. I thought maybe be wanted an old man band record deal. I guess he could be waiting before he makes his move.

I miss the music of the show. No one sings anymore. It's just the same Maddie song over and over again.

I am so over this show. I am sort of hate watching it now, which is amazing because I was really enjoying parts of it before the break. Mostly I loved the guys and their storylines with the band. I even kind of like Alanna. But part of my enjoyment was that I assumed when the show came back after the break, it would wind down toward a series finale. I thought Alanna would leave the group and go wtih Brad and then her storyline would be done. Juliette would come back sooner and have the biggest storyline of the second half of this season given how Hayden is the star of the show and how little she'd been around before now. I also thought we'd be getting hints of what would happen with Scarlett and Gunnar. Even if they didn't get back together, I figured they'd at least be in scenes together.

Now it feels like we're in the middle of a season, not a series, and nothing is winding down. And we're still spending more time with Alanna and Twig than the series regulars. And other than Daphne, no one seems to have any ambition about music.

This show....ugh...I just can't...

So the Juliette storyline was the focus of the episode until it wasn't. That was all just dropped so we could see two teenagers having sex and the writers retconning Deacon's dad into Mr. Goodfather. And when Scarlett left the Bluebird, I KNEW she was going to get him. Fuck her meddling self. That must be where Maddie gets it. And all of the sudden she's back on the show without her pet project, like nothing ever changed?

Regarding Gideon. I too thought Daphne was going to find him either dead or gone. I actually never saw the drinking coming. I didn't assume everything was magically fixed, but I didn't expect them to open this can of worms so late in the game. Ridiculous. And it bothers me that they've never addressed Beverly dying with him. That's not a big thing really, but a conversation I'd like to have seen.

I like Twig and Maddie together because she seems like less of a douche with him. But he did her wrong. Of course Jonah is his livelihood so I guess it makes sense. In the end though, I'd like to see them end up together.

Alannah looked gorgeous last night. I'm not worried about her and Avery. We all know he'll either be back with Juliette or with no one. When she said, " I need more time," my teenage son said, "Well, you better hurry up lady. You only have 2 more episodes!" And Emily and Glenn were back! Hurray

I loved the millisecond scene with the guys, but it seemed like it was just a piece meal for Will and Gunner to be in the episode.

The preview for next week? Ugh...Not looking happy or resolved. ! I really hope they don't have Cadence be really sick. It crossed my mind that they'll give her leukemia since they kept mentioning the fevers. The reason I thought that is because they seem to be about raising awareness and Chip Esten's big cause is leukemia research since his daughter had it as a child. BTW, did anyone catch that was his daughter in the Bluebird scene? I totally did! And Scarlett and Gunner meeting up again? Who didn't see that coming?

It's hard for me to fathom that the writers knew from the get-go that this was the last season and this is the best they came up with.

Haven't others reported that the writers found out late that the show was cancelled? But in any event, it doesn't feel like a season wrapping up either. And I wonder if Alanna was supposed to be a new character to sort of replace Juliette. I think it's obvious, to me at least, that this would've been Hayden's last season. And maybe other cast members were going to leave too. You never know, so they were bringing in more people for that reason.

They didn't find out that late because  before this season even started they announced that it was the final season. So it seems they had time. I do agree that Hayden was leaving either way. That's been obvious since season 4. I am actually surprised she is still on the show.

Does Maddie have her lip color tattooed on? It's just as awful as the rest of her look. It would look okay if she went with a softer eye look instead of the falsies/raccoon eye, but you can't do both. Driving me nuts. (Though in fairness, I fast-forwarded most of her scenes.)

I'd have no problem if Deacon and his girls (I guess Daphne and Teddy are just done-zo for good) ended their arc with Deacon making peace with his father and them having a new family member as part of their world. If that were the story. But now the story is his drinking again. No thanks, too much new drama for a new character at the end of the show. And I guess Will ends the show with nothing at all.

Is Gideon 19?  "Where you been"?  "Out".  This is how an entitled 19 year old talks to his parents, not a grown man who is allowed to live in someone's house, by the thinnest of threads.  Even if they were all on the best of terms, you don't treat your host's house as if it were a hotel.

I couldn't even work up to an eye-roll when Scarlett went to get Gideon.  How else are we going to know Scarlett is on our screen if she isn't meddling in someone else's life.

I don't know anything about the law and usually when I try to guess what legal ramifications will be in a real life situation, I am totally wrong.  But can a non-disclosure agreement be considered legally binding if it means covering up an illegal act?  Would it depend on whether you could prove an illegal act had taken place?  Don't know, but I can't see how stepping away from the music business is going to help Juliette.

My husband has watched less than 30 total minutes of Nashville, ever.  He saw the scene between Alannah and Brad... and asked, why do they have a cartoon character bad guy on this show?  There are some storylines which are too serious to treat casually.  They have earned a "D-" from the heavy-handed and rushed way they have handled this topic.  Alannah did have me fooled though.  The way they have her interacting with Brad, makes it seem as if she is ready to play ball so to speak with his agenda.  By not acquiescing abruptly, and calling him on his shit, I like that she is manipulating him instead of the other way around.

I wish that Maddie had discovered the betrayal by Jonah totally on her own, instead of Twig giving it away.  Poor Jonah, totally being taken advantage of by that crazy girl.  What else could he do?  Blech!

And yet after all that I've said, and all that y'all have said, which I agree with... yesterday morning I thought "Yay, it's Thursday, so I've got Nashville to watch tonight"   Immediately followed with "Damn, only three more shows"!  No matter how much griping I do, I am going to miss seeing these characters on my tv.

Yeah.. I’m pretty sure they knew this was the final season or at least had some notice that it was before a certain number of episodes.

And yeah even if it wasn’t the last season, I would always assume Hayden was done but she has seemed checked out for quite a bit lately. Mostly since the move to cmt. Granted some of that was her own personal things and some of it May have been budget issues since the show may have a smaller budget being on cmt.

But yeah I was surprised that both Hayden and Connie returned for the cmt version. Yes we only got nine episodes with Connie but even that was a surprised. I was surprised haydencame back both because her ending was a cliffhanger and they could have easily had Juliette did but also because I truthfully thought Hayden was done.

But yeah they just seem to be adding new characters left and right here, but I feel like they had enough time to know the show is ending. Also... they had to have enough time because before this part of the season aired they had the cast making videos about how the show was ending.. and putting in all these videos from the set about it being the end. So. They had time.

Couldn't be bothered to comment last night. I was bored and disappointed again.

Too much time on creeper Brad and purple hair. Odd how his history is now scumbag letch, but before it was "no judge would keep him from getting custody". And what the hell happened to her voice with him? It's like two octaves higher when she talks. Ugh.

Gideon, meh. He's going to flake out and bail. Or have a come to Jesus moment and quit.

Go away Scarlett.

Loved the 10 seconds of Will, Avery, and Gunnar. Since we're going out with a song every week, really wished it was those three sitting around the house playing  instead of she who shall not be named.

Hi Glenn. Missed you.

How many party people saw Jonah with crazy ex?

Thanks so much! I was wondering, why these long shots of kids in the Bluebird? Who are they? And then guessed that they were Esten's but didn't know for sure. How fun!

Ugh, Jonah's response to his friend is "You had one job...." Asshole.

The Juliette storyline in the ep was bizarre. Who is writing this, that the entire plot disappeared in the second half? I have caught weird edits in the past few weeks too, and thought, yeah, they're just not trying anymore, are they?

If it’s brought up again it’ll be a reveal either the end of next episode or the series finale. It posssibly we will get a montage where we see the future and Avery and Juliette have two kids or

domething. or it’s never going to be brought up again.

Hate to defend Alannah, but I think she's playing into him on purpose. Somehow whatever she manages to trap him doing will prove him an unfit father and resolve the custody and Jessie/Deacon situations.

I thought of it when Avery was telling Alannah that Cadence was the only thing tying him to Juliette - that seemed really pointed. Maybe it will come up if Cadence has some contagious disease and Juliette is forced to reveal why she can't be with her.

People who got more air time this episode than Will or Gunner or Avery: Jonah, Jonah's stalker ex, Twig, Alannah, Brad, Brad's receptionist, Gideon, Jesse, Darius, Darius' secretary, Emily, Glenn (not that I don't love Emily and Glenn) and all those fucking kids at that stupid fucking house party! Jesus God!

AND they gave Alannah and Gideon songs! For fucks sake! Do they really have zero idea what fans want for a show that's ending!

At least they had Deacon sing, even though it was more of a ditty.  However, that ditty was one of my favorite scenes of the episode.  Otherwise the music was provided by new characters that the writers are shoehorning in over established and, to an extent, beloved characters.  I would prefer more Deacon and the girls (I even like Maddie when it's just normal family scenes), the three guys (Avery, Will and Gunner [without relationship drama amongst them), and Juliette.  I agree with others that the show should end with Juliette and Deacon establishing a professional relationship which is how the series began (but leave out the sexual relationship between them).

I would be very happy if Brad and Alannah went to the west coast on tour or something and just disappeared for the remainder of the season.  Kind of how Scarlett's PTSD project has just disappeared so that she can meddle with Gideon and Deacon.  Throughout this season, several posters have questioned if the other cast members just don't want to work with the actress, and I'm beginning to buy into that theory as she is so separated from everyone except Deacon.

Charles (Chip) Esten always brings the feels to the episodes.  I really hope he gets a great new series.

There is another possible Cadence/leukemia tie in that would repeat history.  I started following Hayden when she was on "Guiding Light" playing Lizzie Spaulding.  As I recall Hayden won the daytime Emmy for child actors for Lizzie's leukemia storyline.  Lizzie was saved when she received a bone marrow transplant from her newborn baby brother, who, like the newest Javery baby, was conceived as the result of one night of passion between former partners who still loved one another.  (It's frightening how much I remember about a show that's been off the air for so long.)  I predict the same thing will happen here.  Cadence's illness will bring Javery back together, and Baby Javery will save Cadence.  A very happy ending for us Javery fans!

I'm really disappointed that "Nashville" is ending this way.  They could have had every episode jam-packed with the original characters playing wonderful music and living incredible, loving lives with realistic relationships and not all this drama and hate toward each other, and the fans would have been thrilled and the show would have gone out on top.  Instead, this crap.

I used to be proud to say I worked as a background actor on this show, but not anymore.

I know it's silly to complain about things like this on a show like "Nashville," but there's no way a huge star like Juliette would dream of doing what she's doing with The Movement without consulting a TEAM of attorneys, not to mention publicists and media specialists.

And isn't this basically a rip-off of the Leah Remini vs. Scientology story?

So this is how Nashville goes out. Not with a bang, but with a sad, sad whimper. I cant say I hate everything the show is doing, but I am mostly bored and confused as to why we are spending so much time with so many new characters this close to the end game. I dont mind adding new people, but none of them are very interesting, and I dont want to spend the last episodes of this show with Alanna or Jonah or his stalker side piece, or any of these other characters who have appeared out of nowhere. I want to spend it with Deacon and Daphne and Avery and Will and Juliette and hell even Maddie and Scarlette, characters that I at least know and basically give a shit about. This is ridiculous, how can they think this is what fans want?!

Chip Easten is killing the Gideon story, but I still dont really care for it, or at least how its being played. It seems like everyone is being so hard on Deacon for not instantly forgiving his abusive father, including the writers, and now that he finally gave in, his crappy dad will betray him again.

* I find Twig annoying and another character Maddie has no chemistry with so not interested in that

* It feels to me like the writers of this show are the only ones who don't know it's ending. Nothing looks on the path to being resolved.

* the evil Brad storyline could actually have been good if the series was not ending and they had time (and used it) to gradually build it up and have him gets his own. Rushed through with Purple Hair just highlights why on earth was this added? the series is ending/no need to work this in.

* I enjoyed Deacon's ditty performance. It was a cute song--and I was touched by him getting to have some pleasant memories while still recognizing the bad stuff that happened.  But the Grandpa is secretly drinking stuff ruins everything.

* I enjoyed seeing a real life respect musician. Harmonic player in Grandpa's garage band is a real, highly respected harmonic player. Deacon would have already known him. I've met Jellyroll Johnson and I don't get out that much.

* I always like feisty Juliette so her response to don't poke the bear ("have you ever heard 'don't threaten Juliette Barnes'" ) was great.

That's all I have for great.
