Changes of Heart: I Used To Be Classy, Now I'm Trashy

As we now have a decade of material to judge, are there any housewives, feuds, events, vacations, or entire seasons you feel differently about now versus when you first saw it?

I used to think Jill and LuAnn were the resident snobs on the show, but upon re-watch, I'm not sure how I didn't see that Ramona was actually worse than both of them all along.

I used to adore Bethenny, especially with her being the Greek Chorus and usually saying exactly what the audience was thinking. Now, I see her very differently. I don't know if she has changed all that much, the editors aren't covering her like they used to, or if I just can't tolerate her caustic sense of "humor" as much anymore.

She just seems unnecessarily mean now.

She is no longer that "Greek Chorus", she is cruel, wanting to draw blood over any perceived slight (real or imagined) anymore.

It just appears to me as if she always always always has to be right and have the last word. No one else can ever have the last word. She will always punctuate something with her own word. That is tiring to be around. Sometimes, you just be quiet .

They don't pay Bethenny to be quiet.    She is who she is and she's no meaner than the rest.  She's just more visible than the others because she gets more camera time.

I think I like Bethenny way more now than I did originally. I thought she was fine, but I didn't care enough to watch the spin offs (mostly bc I found her relationship with Jason to be so dumb.)

I've come around to a weird sort of appreciation of Ramona. I like Lu way more now than I did when she was nothing but the snobby countess. So many layers now - I like it.

Bethenny has been my favorite since day one.    NY was my introduction to the HWs and I stopped watching when she left but came back when she did.   IMHO NY is and will always be the best.

Agreed!

The Sonja who first arrived on the scene in S3 is *completely* different than the Sonja who emerged a season or so later.

First season of Sonja= classy, stylish, fun lady who seemed to have her shit together and naturally existed in a luxurious lifestyle. She actually was the sane and sweet one on Scary Island who seemed to take everything in great stride.

After that, well...she quickly showed her ass. Figuratively AND literally.

I have a total soft spot for Lu.  I feel like I have travelled the same path as her, although with a lot less money lol.  Being arraigned and in jail is no fun.  I can laugh now (at myself), but at the time I went thru it?  Nope.  That’s also why I can stand behind her bologna sandwich story.  Jail bologna is. WHOLE another story than off the rack bologna.  P.S.  was bologna part of the SkinnyGirl deli meats??? ?

This was me. Back in the TWoP days, I would defend Bethenny to the hilt, and it was her return to this franchise that slowly made me want to defend her less and less. I think it was in large part how she was toward Heather, who I adored (and still adore). It's very rare for me to change my views on a HW--once I like you, I like you, and I think of them as how I think of my girlfriends, all of whom are flawed, but I'll still rock with you if the flaws aren't egregious (in my estimation). On the flip side, once I dislike you, good luck lol (See: LuAnn. She was pretentious for so many seasons that I don't care that she's supposedly cool and bawdy these days.)

So, this Bethenny switch for me is major. Yet and still, I'll still think that Jason is an ass and was probably stealth about a lot of shit, so in the Bethenny thread when I was posting their more frequently I'd still back her up on that front. But how she is with the other HWs? I don't care for it in the slightest.

I’m still a fan of Bethany but her first 2 seasons back were rough and made me much less ride or die for her. It wasn’t Heather though. Truth be told I also find Heather really annoying and probably would have gotten into it with her too over some of her bossy pants mama bear tendencies too. It was Jules. The way Bethanny and Carole went after her was just cruel and they never really owned up to it. I felt like Bethany was at least able to admit Jules triggered childhood shit for her while Carole would not admit to anything, but it was still awful and they owed her a huge apology.

I liked Lu. Then I hated Lu. I didn't watch the Aviva seasons and now for the last two, three??? seasons I'm back to liking Lu.

I've done a complete 180 on Bethany. Wealth only magnified what was already there and it's not good. She hid it better when she was scrambling.

I've never trusted Ramona. Sonja has always remained a nothing for me.  Kelly was, is, and still will be BSC in my opinion.

It takes watching that "bad edit" episode or season to gain a bit of perspective when it comes to a housewife.

I liked Lu her first season.  Then I hated Lu.  Then I like Lu when she was demoted and became the Greek chorus so to speak.  And I've liked Lu the last few seasons for the most part.  Note:  I said for the most part.

Loved Beth her first seasons on RHNY.  Hated her on her spin off.  Can't stand her since her return to RHNY.

Kelly was, is, and will be BSC in my opinion as well.

I liked Sonja at first but then she became more and more sad, for lack of a better word.

Gosh, Ro.  Mostly can't stand her but she was right about Beth on the bridge.

Ahh, Kelly Kelly Kelly.

I always suspected she was on the spectrum and never properly diagnosed.

I had a friend of mine who works with adults with autism watch the Scary Island episodes and she said that while Kelly appeared to have something wrong with her, her own armchair diagnosis would be personality disorder and drugs, not autism. Take it as you like.

Yep, count me in on the "I used to like Bethenny" vote. I think the reason why she was so popular in her first 3 seasons was that she could snark as the underdog. Luann was pretentious as hell as the countess, Jill was a nightmare, even more so during her war with Bethenny, and Ramona was Ramona. Fast forward to when Bethenny returned and she was no longer the underdog but the queen bee/alpha bitch. She would still snark on people but because she wasn't the underdog anymore it came off as cruel. Heather, while sometimes a little bossy, is no Jill or Luann. Bethenny's disdain for her seemed totally uncalled for. Then there were the weaker ones like Jules and Kristen. Even more uncalled for. When underdog stands up to a Jill, we're all cheering them on. When a top dog picks on a Jules we're all waiting for someone to come and knock that bitch off her perch.

I’m an Autism specialist.  I don’t think she’s on the spectrum.  She’s odd but there is a whole criteria for diagnosis that I’m just not seeing in her.

I think in comedy (stand-up, etc.) it's referred to as "punching up" vs. "punching down." If you're taking shots from your position in the valley at the powers that be who are at the top of the hill, then it's all well and good ("punching up"). But if you happen to make it to the top of the hill, then taking shots at the people in the valley makes you look really bad ("punching down").

Bethenny: I used to find her funny and charming  (and I loved her real face) but I can't stand her now. She has a cruel streak a mile deep, and likes to crack the whip over the heads of people without her deep pockets or power. She's a bloviating liar and a bully; a real heroine for our insta times.

Sonja: Heartbreaking how far she's fallen -- hard to even remember how thoughtful, kind, and articulate she seemed on Scary Island.

Jill: Then as now; dislike her deeply.

Lu: disliked her at first (and still cringe,  occasionally) but she's become the MVP on this show, imo.  (Never saw THAT coming).  Whether falling into a rosebush, out of rehab,  or up onto a cabaret stage, she seems to be changing for the better. She's always struck me as a Vegas showgirl, not a countess; the kind of woman who'd wear a white feather headpiece, date a high rolling hood (while teaching him how to slip loose from police cuffs :) and I like that there's more dame than grande dame in her style these days.

Ramona: I have loathed her with the passion of a thousand nuns, but somehow -- over the last couple of years -- she's managed to raise her Germanic, slicked-haired self back up to a merely "annoying" status. Kadooz, Moaner!

Dorinda: I want to shake her. All the time.  And the 0  to 100 thing drives me mad (or -- as Dorinda would put it -- "I WA SHAK HURR ALL TIMMME ZEEROO ONE HUNERD DRIVEL ME MUD!") Her former life intrigues me more than her current one (how did the motherfucking overlords at The Council on Foreign Relations relate to Crazy Doris? Did she scream "CLIP CLIP" at Madeline Allbright? Hand Colin Powell her coat? Honestly, how the fuck did she end up in THAT crowd, drunk or sober?) Two points in her favour: her description of a sleepover watching Law and Order was adorable, and her wedding to Richard looked like a fun party (an aquarium theme, with cigarette girls and candy stripers):

http://nymag.com/weddings/album/2007/summer/restaurantdinnerparty/

Aviva. Yech (esp. for making me side with Moaner and Sonja over that "overweight middle aged girls gone wild" crap from Reid). She threw her leg -- and every ounce of personal dignity --  to the wind.

That said,  I will always thank her for inciting Sawnja's "Tarantino meets Scorcese"  mini-monologue (one of my favourite moments, ever) with Lady Freegan throwing down (across a damn kitchen island in St Barts, the perfect absurd touch to the whole thing): "My mouth is money. You fucking call me a double dealer? You see where your ass ends up. What comes out of my mouth, you can sell it. I don't bullshit. I have been around a long time, bitch. I am OLD."

A housewife not only saying she's old, but claiming her age as a source of power? Gotta be the most radical moment in the history of the whole damn series ;)

I think the vulture RHONY recaps described Bethenny perfectly:

"Bethenny has been unlikable for a few seasons now and I think that issue is perfectly encapsulated here. She is no longer aware of how she comes off on camera. If she were to give it to Ramona back in the day when she had nothing and Ramona was making her cry on the Brooklyn Bridge, that’d be one thing. But now, she’s the alpha dog of the group and she’s wielding her success like it’s some kind of weapon and she is going to bludgeon everyone else."

She seemed likable as the under dog. As the top dog she is just a bully. She should have left housewives and never came back once she reached the pinnacle of her success. Madonna only dressed up like a virgin once in her career. It doesn't always bode well to go back.
