They've been talking about this forever, including in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly...

The Hollywood Reporter revealed the news out of Cannes today.

Currently in pre-production, Bill & Ted Face the Music will see the duo long past their days as time-traveling teenagers and now weighed down by middle age and the responsibilities of family. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it. Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on a time travel adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends, they find much, much more than just a song.

Dean Parisot (Galaxy Quest) will direct the film from a script by original writers Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon. Of course, Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves will reprise their roles almost three decades after the original two films, and Bill and Ted’s daughters will be joining their time-traveling adventures this time around. MGM, which owns the rights to the series, will release the film in the US, while international sales are currently in the works at the Cannes Film Festival.

I can't decide if I'm excited or appalled. I love Bill & Ted, but I'm not sure how they're going to be able to pull this one off. They can't still be as dim as they were as teenagers, it would just seem stupid.

Somehow, I trust Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter to pull this off. I can't explain why.

Rufus: They do get better.

Now I wanna go watch them again. I hope Death makes an appearance!

I wonder if this movie will address the death of San Dimas Mall? R.I.P.

*The real San Dimas Mall, the Metrocenter in Phoenix, basically fell on hard times. It's slated to basically be turned into a mixed-use place and it probably won't look recognizable.

I've been almost universally opposed to all of the reboot/sequel monstrosities that have been taking over Hollywood recently, but somehow this one actually sounds like a lot of fun. Mostly because this is exactly what I would imagine has happened to the characters over the course of their lives - very little, lol. And if they do get William Sadler back as Death, then I'm in for sure!

There is something oddly pathetic about this...

I'm kind of shocked Keanu Reeves would do this, because his career is actually pretty solid, but maybe he's just feeling nostalgic and wants to go back to a happy character from his youth.

I think they are doing it for the fans.

Honestly, the idea on its own makes me laugh - they were supposed to write the song that would save the world. But they haven't done it.

It's perfect for the humour of the original movies, and gives them a great jumping off point for making something that enhances the mythology of this universe. Whether they actually create a movie that is a worthy sequel obviously remains to be seen.

Hmm.  At first I thought "man that was quick". But seven weeks is actually a lot of filming time for a comedy.

Of course it's inherently an effects film too., if it's in the same vein as the other two  So post-production is gonna be pretty long while they do all that digital stuff.

My only complaint is that I'm already feeling the lack of Rufus but, that's beyond anyone's control. RIP George Carlin 😥

Other than that, the teaser trailer was great. Loved seeing Jacked Up Bill and Ted and Death!

Probably ab Unpopular Opinion but I think Bogus Journey is better than Excellent Adventure. I jist loved William Sadler as Death. The scene where they "play" death never gets old.

I loved that he tweeted as Death
