Brooks February 23, 2018 Share February 23, 2018 Anyone know how many episodes are left this season? Can we hope the 8K disaster is the start of a new direction for Whit? Also, anyone know why the race was shortened (if I understand that correctly)? I don't get how one pathetic participant could drive that result. 3 Link to comment

Brooks February 23, 2018 Share February 23, 2018 Thanks. Episode 9 coming up. If episode 13 (or 14) is Whitney succumbing to professional help, then TLC will have to renew for another season so her fans don't revolt. 3 Link to comment

I don't get how one pathetic participant could drive that result. Races are occasionally shortened due to routing mistakes. I did a 5k once that was so poorly marked I think I ended up only doing 2 miles of it. With these "fun runs," most people don't end up caring about the missed mileage, but it's a huge problem in marathons, especially those with a high proportion of BQers. 2 Link to comment
TurtlePower February 23, 2018 Share February 23, 2018 Buddy might want to re-think this. She has no determination when it comes to exercise and she is most certainly not "addicted" to it. If she did, she'd be fit. Her addiction is food. I hope he eventually takes that route, telling Whitney her "determination" is an addiction will only feed her already inflated ego. 10 Link to comment
MegD February 24, 2018 Share February 24, 2018 Buddy it's not her "determination" it's her histrionic personality disorder and likely Münchhausen's. Or did you mean that her "determination to eat herself to becoming bedbound" is an addiction. 18 Link to comment
ClareWalks February 24, 2018 Share February 24, 2018 I really cannot wait for this. You'd think this sort of thing would wake Whitney up, would make her realize "wow, I can't do this thing that so many people can do without even thinking about it." But instead she seems to have truly convinced herself that being able to walk a few miles is a genuinely daunting task that only elite athletes can perform, and if she can finish it, she is one of them. As Bianca del Rio would say, "okay, Beyonce." Maybe I am biased, but I am convinced that any able-bodied person can walk a half marathon if they have a bit of training and determination. Whitney consistently has neither. (Okay, she has determination to finish a race that she starts, only to save face, but she doesn't care enough to train.) 15 Link to comment

I can't fathom what this means. What determination? She definitely has addictions, but exercise is not one of them. There are people who you could say are addicted to exercise. Anorexics spring to mind. I guess there's a less harmful version of that, when you have these fitness lunatics who do something like 5 Iron Man triathlons in a week. 8 Link to comment

mamadrama February 26, 2018 Share February 26, 2018 Really? Her "determination" is what she is addicted to? Her determination to do what? To make up excuses, be the center of attention, overindulge, and make everything about her? Okay, I'd buy that. Telling her that her determination to reach goals is an addiction, on the other hand, is just as bad as someone saying, "I'm too nice. I care about people too much." It's an over-inflated sense of self. Whitney doesn't do ENOUGH. Someone telling her that she does TOO MUCH just gives her validation to continue on her downward spiral. 23 Link to comment

monagatuna February 26, 2018 Share February 26, 2018 That's what makes orthorexia so dangerous. The person is eating, and eating well, so it raises no red flags to anyone, and in fact they are exalted as a healthy eating guru to regular people, which only fuels the obsession. It can lead to extreme calorie and macronutrient restriction, exercising to and past the point of injury, all in the name of "health." 12 Link to comment
ClareWalks February 26, 2018 Share February 26, 2018 I had disordered eating after college. I would stand in the supermarket cereal aisle for several minutes debating whether to get the 100 calorie bran flakes, or the 110 calorie bran flakes that had more fiber and vitamins, only to pick the lower-cal ones every time. An obsession with eating healthy is still an unhealthy relationship with food and can cause a lot of anxiety and stress. 15 Link to comment

People with orthorexia also will exercise to the point of, or despite injury and can cause themselves serious harm. They will also often exercise to the exclusion of everything else - school, work, social relationships, etc. We're talking hours and hours and hours a day. It's actually one of my (many) issues with The Biggest Loser - the amount of exercise they have these people doing isn't healthy or sustainable. 16 Link to comment

Mothra February 28, 2018 Share February 28, 2018 So her "training" consists of leisurely strolling on the beach with her dad? And Glen and I both knew that Whitney would use "you lied to me!!!" as an excuse to refuse to do the walk. What a nasty piece of work she is. Plus, over on Teen Moms, I learned that two women on that show, one a principal and one a producer, have PCOS. They are both very thin and one of them is the mother of three children. We got to go to a doctor visit with one and learned that there are treatments for the disorder, maybe not satisfactory treatments, but there are things that can be done. I believed Whitney when she told us that PCOS virtually guaranteed weight gain and/or extreme difficulty in losing weight. As Whitney says, "You lied to me!!!!" 15 Link to comment

aliya February 28, 2018 Share February 28, 2018 I audit human subjects research and see studies about a myriad of diseases/conditions. Today I saw a study that will test a drug usually used for breast cancer to see if it will help PCOS (there's scientific merit behind this). It just made me think of Twit and how, if her PCOS really worried her, she'd be seeing a specialist at a major research hospital. I'm sure Babs and Glenn would pay the extra expense of a specialist if it meant that Twit could lose some weight and get her PCOS in order. But that would be like being an adult and taking care of yourself; not Twit strong suits. 14 Link to comment

Thrifty February 28, 2018 Share February 28, 2018 I'm trying to actually watch this show for once but it's hard because it's so insipid. Fortunately, I got my answer to the question "How is Whitney's determination like an addiction?" in just the first minute with the introductory montage. It's like addiction because she is trying to finish something she can't finish. I forget how Buddy phrased it. It's such a topsy turvy world she lives in that perseverance is seen as a vice. I sort of agree that someone in as terrible shape as her shouldn't be trying to walk an 8K. Just like I shouldn't be trying to run a marathon. It's not terribly strenuous exercise to walk 5 miles, but it is for someone her size and she really should do something less intense. It is a little funny watching someone treating a casual walk like an Ironman Triathalon. 10 Link to comment
