Because Will and Sonny together with no conflict whatsoever is soooooooo much more interesting.

Soaps for too long have relied on an interloper to make a couple interesting. A skilled writer would use the problems that Wilson had before Will died to give them character-driven stories.  Will's immaturity and inexperience with men could have been an obstacle for Wilson to overcome individually and collectively as a couple. Instead, the show wrote both Will and Sonny out of character to facilitate Will's affair with Paul..

Boom-boom, there it is.  An interloper doesn't make a couple interesting.  Couples have a bunch of problems without an interloper hanging around.  Look at Sonny and Will.  Why can't Will stay faithful?  That's a story.  He's going to cheat again and Sonny is just going to take him back.  Why does he continue to take him back?  That's a story.  Maybe Sonny wants a baby of his own.  How would they go about that?  Another story.

A skilled writer wouldn't go to the interloper well over and over and over again.  But since we all know that Ron isn't a skilled writer...

Temporarily.  Vanessa booked a movie and left to do it around this time.  I guess it's finally getting to the point that she left to do that movie.

Okay, phew!  Make that money, Vanessa, and then come back to us!

Seriously.  And Ron was playing with pieces already in place re: Will, Sonny, and Paul.

No soap writer is perfect, but Ron  relies too much on camp, plot and not enough on character-driven stories. Camp is part of soap, but, like everything it has to be in moderation.

Oh gawd, the last thing Will and Sonny need at this juncture is another kid.

For me personally, I think part of the problem in telling a more internal story for Will and Sonny is that their personalities - and I'm not sure it was like this to start - are very similar, they're both kinda blandly nice.  With Kyle/Fish on OLTL (yes, I'm talking about them again, deal!), what was interesting to me was the contrast in their personalities - Fish being very by-the-book and Kyle being more morally flexible - and them loving each other anyway.  We saw a hint of that personality conflict when Kyle did a DNA test behind Fish's back to find out if he was Sierra's father, with Fish aghast at Kyle breaking rules and Kyle insisting that the greater good outweighed that.  And I was looking forward to seeing more of that type of conflict bleed into their stories, even if it did eventually involve an interloper.

Unless they use Susan Banks as their surrogate.

Let the wacky turkey baster hijinks begin!!

Maybe that'll talk to her, too.

I’ve had to deal with Ron on three soaps now and it’s the same nonsense each time.  Now, I’ve been saying forever that the man needs to go back and take some writing classes.  He needs some help.

I've seen Ron's crap on GH. And I call it crap, because it was. Nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade when called for. Ron likes camp, rape, and rape drenched in camp.

A Bill Bell or Agnes Nixon he is not. And never will be.

Don’t forget his mask fetish as a way to make any actor suddenly transform into someone.

On GH for a while there it was like he had half the characters masked up and pretending to be other people despite age, height, even gender or sex.

I also really hate how he downplays rape, as you mentioned.

People sleeping with the mentally ill who cannot give consent, or people “tricked” into thinking they’re sleeping with their lover/partner but it’s an imposter. Or he just writes a full blown rape but it not treated with deft hands or sensitivity, just another plot point to exploit without care.

There have been times I haven’t minded his vision, but he can make it so hard to stick through his “spells of genius”.

I mean honestly, right now there are at least four or more major players exiting the show pretty much all around the same time, if Ron was doing a better job I think that might not be the case.

IMHO, he could be doing better and should be. So many spoilers of late leave me convinced of that.

Tell the truth. I watched him wreck and ruin so many iconic characters with that bs and he always pitched a fit and had a tantrum whenever he got criticized for that garbage.

It isn’t something that he’s pulled out so much here on Days yet so I wonder if that is actually in the cards coming up, maybe Leo will be unmasked as someone else as he seeks revenge on Will and Sonny.

Or perhaps it might be Ted going incognito.

Well, to be fair, this is also the show that had a MALE actor as Sami while Alison Sweeney was off for a bit. (Stan/Sami, how UGH!) So at least Ron is in good campy company. Actually, I blame Reilly for making this show into a joke. The rest are just hammering nails into the coffin.

But I share your Ron Carlivati distaste.

This show is a loooooooooooooong way from the roots of its premiere. (I wasn't born then, but I saw it on Soapnet ages ago.)

I think the possession story by Reilly took the show down a path of never return.  It was ratings gold, but, it did real damage to the show.  He made the Villains more dynamic and interesting than the heroes. For example: look at Carrie in relation to Sami.  The heroes should always drive stories and never the villains.  He also relied too much on interlopers to drive stories for the couples. At one point, he had 4 triangles at the same time.  I also hated his Madonna/Whore complex when it came to writing for female characters.  He dragged his stories to the point of  making viewers lose interest in them. I did love his payoffs, Carrie punching Sami at her aborted wedding to Austin was so satisfying.  I also loved his stories like Aremid and Maison Blanche that incorporated so many characters.. The character interactions were fantastic. Kristen slow descent into evil was his best story, in my opinion.

I think that Ron would benefit with having a co-head writer like a Bill Bell to curb his tendencies of going too far into campy territory.  He has good ideas, but, the execution leaves a lot to be desired.  Plus, he recycles the dreadful DID stories.  DID is so 1980's. There are plenty of mental illnesses that he can give  a character. Furthermore, why is it always a woman who suffers from a mental illness and never a man.. Depression would be a good story for him to tackle.. So many people suffer from some form of depression in this country. Soaps used to be so good at writing topical issues like that.

Man, they really did put a rush on Paul’s exit. I guess it’s good he got goodbye scenes at all, and he wasn’t just whisked away off camera as they have done some...

And of course Will and Sonny waste little time hurrying to be together. What a gross twosome they are.

I guess in their dream state of a love reunion the dweebs forgot that Victor was often always against them being together.

The new guy definitely intrigues me.

He isn’t Guy or Specer but he is cute and hopefully he can act.

I just hate knowing that they are setting up such a rare queer coupling seen on TV with someone African American and someone Asian just to take them both off screen right after.

This dude could have been the perfect foil to just sticking Paul with Will after his return. So now I not only get to be sad CS is leaving but he’s leaving with even more massive untapped opportunity hanging over him. Thanks show.

Why can't they be together? why must everybody cater to Saint Paul?   Paul exercised poor judgment by getting with an amnesiac Will. He knew how Will felt about him and Sonny before he died.  What goes around comes around. He had no problem panting after Sonny when Will had just died and even followed Sonny to Will's grave asking for a chance after Sonny's bereavement was over.

I'm with you.

While Sparkle Paul as a character has marginally improved since first showing up, he hasn't improved enough for me to forget what an absolute putz he was when he arrived, how gross it was the way he tried to move in on Sonny when he knew he was married AND he wanted it all on the down low, and then, getting involved with amnesiac Will?

I find it really hard to feel a lot of sympathy for somebody who deliberately lies down in front of a moving car and then is surprised he gets run over.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record repeatedly going over why I prefer Paul and Christopher Sean or why I detest Will and Sonny and can’t stand Freddie and Chandler.

I will sum it up by saying this, I have never bought into Will and Sonny as a couple, so I do not care to see them reunite as a couple, Paul has nothing to do with that.

I’ve never believed the actors playing as a couple and I have never liked how they have been written.

If they said that Will and Sonny will reunite and then drive off a cliff together I might be on board for something like that, but as far as watching them reclaim their so called “long lost forever love”...no thanks, I find it, and them, gross and ridiculous.

Will and Sonny have been and always will be my biggest problems with Will and Sonny, thanks to the writers and actors.

One of the reasons I stopped watching Days a while back is because they were just so front and center for so long and I just found nothing at all to like about them, and now that they’re getting back into the groove it is not and never will be appealing to me.

Personally I hope that Victor continues to stick his nose into their business and make trouble.

I also hope that when Leo comes speeding back into town that he succeeds in causing a lot of problems in their lives, at least then I can find something worth watching about them, for a time, because otherwise they’re the same old gruesome twosome I’ve been immensely bored by for years.

I cared about Paul solely, Will can eat dirt for all I care, heh.

Will was basically not so terrible that I had to forgo watching scenes just to see Christopher, that’s just the bare bones of it for me.

It was never a case of liking them together, it was never a case of liking them more than Will and Sonny even, it was a case of I decided I wasn’t going to not watch an actor that I enjoy just because he was trapped with a character I normally would ignore.

Which is something I have done before lots of times.

And even though I adore CS, when they put Paul and Sonny together I didn’t have the stomach to watch them and didn’t.

I had no desire to watch Freddie act as if Christopher was physically assaulting him just because he was going in for a kiss so I couldn’t even tolerate any of their scenes.

I tolerated Paul and Will a bit better because I like Chandler a little bit better than I do Freddie, not by much honestly, but if I had a choice I would’ve put Paul with anyone else but those two.

They could have brought Derrick back, or had him spark something with a newly coming out bisexual Eli or JJ, or some new guy like the one who will be taking Paul out of town, pretty much just anyone who could act as a gay man without the obvious cringe/awkward factor would have been a good start, imo.

But Paul/CS is leaving so the only thing I have left to look forward to in regards to the worst queersome threesome on daytime is Sonny and Will’s happiness self imploding due to their utter and complete stupidity over Leo’s “accidental death”. Aside from that they can rot afaic.

Wait...what?

That entire promo gave me so many conflicting feelings. I don’t even know where to start...

So the worst actress to play Abby is back playing Abby and in literally five seconds reminded me of just how bad she is at this thing called acting.

Julie finds out Chad is the actual father and then slaps Gabi and of course that must lead to her untimely fall down the stairs. Frankly Julie in a coma would be an improvement so I can’t be mad about that really.

Leo somehow is looking better, death must suit him. At least now Greg will be able to put his usual snarky smirky acting to good use while he torments the two dumbos.

I just love Victor, that line about “if you’re going to kill someone make sure that they’re dead”, bless him. He has to know he is talking to Sonny and Will right? He of all people knows just how incompetent they are on a good day.

I hope that Kate doesn’t take shit from Sonny over the whole Leo scheme, not after his pathetic ass wanted to play “big bad gangster” in the family business that led to him doing all kinds of devious bs when it benefitted him.

So they are going to put Ted between Hope and Rafe, poor guy.

I will greatly miss Christopher, what a wasted talent.

So they’ve decided to pair JJ with someone new, so...okay, maybe he’ll have more scenes now.

Why are they still trying whatever they’re trying with  Lani and Eli, how much time and effort can be put into something that obviously isn’t working, geez.

Jack is back. Yay...?  I am still not sure how to feel about that.

So once again Chloe is going to try to steal the baby that she never should’ve taken from her rightful family? Really? Ew.

Has no one in this town ever heard of shared custody before?? FFS...

I preemptively like this Haley Chen.  from the little vignette of her appearance, she seems to be played by a good actress, and it's good that the show is casting more Asian characters.  Plus, a new girl for J.J. makes sense.  Once Gabi's schemes come out, he would look really bad if he had anything more to do with her.  I guess that once Gabi is exposed, this will be the end of any possibility of her and J.J. getting back together.

I do like the fact she’s not the typical white washed newbie.

This is Days though, I don’t think there is ever any sin too bad for most characters to come back from. It’ll probably depend on the actress’ availability more than anything.

But I hope they do justice to a new romance with JJ, he certainly has earned a fresh start.

I am actually looking forward to the eventual Jack and JJ scenes the most, those should be tear jerkers for sure.

Some scattered thoughts on the promo:

- Given Will and Sonny's reunion looks to be right around the holidays, I hope we don't have to hear about Sonny's stupid New Year's wish box or whatever.

- Sonny's hair is no.

- Will yelling at Paul for choices Will (and Sonny) made is also no.

- Sonny didn't know about Kate's involvement in the Leo scheme?  I had kinda forgotten that, to be fair.

- Gabi's smug scheme-y look was life-giving, as was Julie slapping the spit out of her.  Soapy!

- Hope's sour faces are still my favorite part of the Ben/Ciara storyline.

- Te is reminding me more and more of pre-Omega Evil Eli from OLTL.

- Eli and Lani are kinda growing on me.

- Heh at Sheila yakking on Abe's shoes.

- Interesting entrance for Jack.  We thinking he's brainwashed?

- Finally, the Holly custody battle.   Custody battles are one of my least favorite soap storylines, and Ron hasn't exactly hit it out of the park with any of his.   I mean, I guess I get it that Eric wants to honor Nicole's dying wish and Chloe feels a bond with Holly since she carried and gave birth to her, but that these two would actually stand a chance against a female blood relative like Maggie seems absurd.

Except Maggie is not Daniel's legal mother thanks to stolen egg scenario and did not find out until he was almost into his 40s that they were related. She is also in her 70 so not the best choice for a guardian of a toddler. Especially when Nicole still has a brother and sister with more legal standing to take claim of Holly over everyone in Salem.

Oh sure, Nicole's brother and sister (Brandon and Taylor, right?) - as well as Holly's half-sister Melanie - are all viable candidates if off-canvas, and I actually would like to hear them decline/be ruled out/at least name checked.

But Maggie is also blood, which she could easily get put on the record if it's not already, and I feel like grandparents are often a go-to in custody situation, certainly before the dead mom's ex-boyfriend and the surrogate.  If anything, I could see the marriage to Victor being the thing that the others point to.

*Screaming in Soap* BUT PAUL HAS TO UNDERSTAND WILL AND SONNY'S REASONS WERE DAMN NOBLE AND FULL OF LOVE FOR HIM!

I wish I had the power to harness the ferocity of Julie's slap and deliver one to Will. Jesus it looks like it'll be as bad a breakup as I always feared it'd be.

Paul seemed defeated and weepy so I doubt I will get anything close to a real soapy moment where he lets loose with real anger and rage.
