Somewhere, movie executives are figuring out how they can Peter Jackson the adult portion of the book into two movies.

I'd like to think movie execs learned from the Divergent debacle, but they never learn.

Those numbers are ridiculous. I was expecting a 30 million weekend. Guess I'm the only one freaked out by the original.  Even pictures of the movie give me nightmares.

Even with Hurricane Irma and NFL opening weekend deflating the box office, It beats the previous September OW record (Hotel Transylvania 2, $48.4M) in one day! The huge trailer views and reports of pre-sales along the lines of comic book tentpoles panned out after all. This just shows August was so dead because of the movies that were(n't) released and the death of theaters isn't upon us (yet).

The actual for It was apparently $123 million.

Wow. Bill Skarsgard, your life as you knew it is officially over.

Professionally.  But he's so unrecognizable in the role his personal life might not be too changed.

Dane DeHaan always reminds me of Bill Skarsgård (who's playing Pennyswise in IT), every time I see a movie with him in, I have to sort of remind myself.

And speaking of Dane, I've just noticed he was in in True Blood for 3 episodes!

While I do see a bit of similarity if I squint.  Skarsgard is probably luckier to be more conventionally handsome than DeHann.  Also while I can't  quite put my finger on what it is about him that makes me feel this way, DeHann always gives me a creepy vibe, even when he's playing the hero.  Skarsgard can pull off the creepy (I haven't seen IT yet, but I liked him in Hemlock Grove), but I can see him playing a hero or main character without thinking he's secretly a serial killer the whole time, which is what constantly runs through my head when watching DeHann.

I guess I just did not find Bill Skarsgard that attractive in Hemlock Grove, so every time someone mentions him being gorgeous I'm like, "really?"  Someone on these boards said that recently and I did a Google image search and was like, "oh, yeah, he is good looking."  (He reminds me most strongly of Matthew Gray Gubler of Criminal Minds fame.) He just also has the capacity to look super creepy. But he was quietly delightful in Atomic Blonde (and very handsome), so clearly he's got range!

The Skarsgards get that creepy ability from Stellan who was not exactly bad looking as a young man, but both Bill and Alexander are more conventionally attractive than Stellan was their age. All of them have a creepy range. I can't speak for Gustaf Skarsgard or Valter Skarsgard as I haven't seen "Vikings" for the former and do not watch enough Scandinavian film/tv for the latter.

Even the second weekend of It would shatter the old September opening weekend record. American Assassin has a decent debut and mother! earns the rare F CinemaScore (though it does have its champions). How much did audiences hate it?

Quote

Another problem with Mother! is that Lawrence is playing against type as a frightened woman versus the heroic kickass we know her for in Hunger Games, Joy and American Hustle. Her fans, who turned out at 38%, didn’t appreciate that and gave her an ‘F’. Forty-three percent came out because they thought Mother! was a horror film, and they gave it an ‘F’. Females showed up at 56% with 82% over 25. Both demos gave Mother! an ‘F’. Aronofsky fans provided Mother! with its best score of C+, and they repped 10% of Friday night’s crowd.

Even a C+ is pretty bad by CinemaScore standards which shows that Aronofsky's fans were only so on board with this. I would love to know how he ever sold a major studio on funding/releasing something so out there.

I wouldn't have given it an F but this was one of the main problems for me.  Not surprised that others went in expecting the same thing.

Yeah, I agree with you but the reason Wonder Woman made so much money because it's a superhero movie. Everyone likes superheroes and there is no way a parent is not going to take their children to see it. Look at Transformers. Most of the movies are downright idiotic but it still makes money because it's.....Transformers. So all popular comic book hero movies will make money period.

I thought the drop for mother! would be worse, but it has its share of passionate supporters and Paramount has embraced the divisiveness. Friend Request finished filming three and a half years ago (March 2014) and was first released in Germany back in January 2016.

I thought it would be worse too, but I don't know if this means a greater part of the audience likes the movie they're seeing. Maybe they do now that people are aware it is not a typical horror.  Maybe people want to see if it's as bad as the cinema score it received, who knows. I do know there is a lot of talk about how much Jennifer Lawrence was paid for this, which I didn't believe Paramount would pay top billing for such a niche film but then they made a wide release so I don't know what their plan was. I don't know. If true there's no way the cost reported in is accurate.

For a long time the budget was reported to be much lower, $13 million. It's what Black Swan cost, and it's not unheard of for stars to take less upfront for prestige projects, especially ones that are not very mainstream. The trailers and clips showed it all happening in one house with just a few characters. Closer to the release date, the $30 million number started being reported, with stories about how Lawrence gets $15 million per movie, with Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris's rates at $3-4 million each, plus they would have to pay the other actors and the crew. Paramount hasn't rushed to correct the stories, maybe because they have bigger fires to put out with this movie, or the real figure is even higher?

Is Blade Runner going to make its budget back?

I doubt it but it depends on the global take, this story from Deadline says they've heard the break-even point is $400M worldwide but it may be slightly less depending on the actual budget (a tricky thing to nail down at times). The tracking was in the mid-$40 million range which would have been Mad Max: Fury Road territory ($154M US / $378M worldwide). Unfortunately 2049 is following the footsteps of the original Blade Runner in being a box office disappointment.

Which raises the question about why they decided it required a sequel 35 years later.

Don't get me wrong, despite my opinion that it's not actually a very good movie, it's beautiful to look at.  But it's a cult film.  That's the opposite of a big blockbuster, so I don't understand why they needed a big blockbuster budget, unless Sony thought it would give them a franchise.

Reboots are hot right now because having a known property helps with promotion.  Blade Runner flopped originally but it has reached cult status through critical recognition and home video.  Plus, sci fi is also having a moment.

So I get why they took a risk on a sequel.  I could never get into the original but it seems like the critical support is there for this one too.  But I think the real question should be why did the studio think it merited a 150-180 million dollar budget and a three hour run time.  3 hours is going to limit the number of screenings that can be offered and limit the number of people who are going to want to see that in a theater.

Out of curiosity, are there any examples of cult classic sequels that went on to find mainstream success? I mean if they couldn't make Blade Runner happen in 1982-- during the peak of Harrison Ford's career, were they ever going to make it happen?

Yeah. I remember being puzzled by this when it was announced. It seemed strange, as did their decision to rest so much on the appeal of Ryan Gosling. Well it seemed that way to me anyway. The lore and story of 2049 was not promoted at all, it was mostly about Ryan being the new lead.

I had to watch Blade Runner in class many years ago. Can't say I enjoyed it, but I appreciate its significance to the genre. I think Total Recall would have been a better bet.

Would Terminator 2 count?

2049 was a co-production with Alcon Entertainment, whose other nine-figure misses this decade include Transcendence and the Point Break remake. A new Blade Runner makes slightly more sense than either of those but none is a great idea at such a high cost.

It just got rebooted in 2012. Using the Spider-Man timeline, I guess it's not too soon try it again? :)

Box Office Mojo says The Terminator was #21 movie for 1984 (between Red Dawn and City Heat).  It was a success relative to its budget ($78.3M worldwide on a $6.4M budget) though nothing on Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the top movie of 1991. It had a much bigger budget ($102M) due to then-cutting edge technology that really paid off with audiences ($522M worldwide).

Mad Max Fury Road?

It's probably the closest comparison though Mad Max was already a franchise and MM:FR was probably an easier sell as a generic action movie.

Mad Max Fury Road?

For some reason I thought the first one was a bigger movie than it actually was (only $8mil box office!) So yes, I think that's an apt comparison. I think the foreign market embraced Blade Runner before it gained cult standing in the US, so maybe the international box office will help it break even.

It ended up becoming the most profitable movie ever until Blair Witch came along. But where do you get $8 million from? Wikipedia says $100 million, but that may be counting the video and TV money.

But I don't think Blade Runner will manage that, unless it suddenly develops into a major cult classic.

I was looking at Box Office Mojo, which probably isn't very accurate, since it only includes the domestic box office, when it obviously made some money in Australia.

Box Office Mojo's info international data can be a bit more limited about 1970s but the movie wasn't a huge hit in America at first. Wikipedia's article on Mad Max 2 has info about that:

Quote

When Mad Max was released in 1980 in the United States, it did not receive a proper release from its distributor, American International Pictures. AIP was in the final stages of a change of ownership after being bought by Filmways, Inc. a year earlier. AIP's problems affected the release of the film and its box office in the US, although Mad Max proved much more successful when released internationally. Warner Bros. decided to release Mad Max 2 in the United States, but they recognised that the first film was not popular in North America. Although the original Mad Max was becoming popular through cable channel showings, Warner Bros. decided to change the name of its sequel to The Road Warrior. The advertising for the film, including print ads, trailers, and TV commercials, did not refer to the Max character at all, and all shied away from the fact that the film was a sequel. For the majority of viewers, their first inkling of Road Warrior being a sequel to Mad Max was when they saw the black and white, archival footage from the previous film, during the prologue.

The film was a commercial success, earning $3.7 million in rentals in Australia. As The Road Warrior in North America, it was a greater success. The film earned $11.3 million in rentals and $23.6 million in grosses. Vestron Video capitalized by releasing Mad Max on video and subtitling it "the thrilling predecessor to The Road Warrior." Despite the title change, grosses from the US release were on par with other countries. Warner Bros. felt comfortable to keep the title of the third Mad Max film, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, intact for that film's American release.

I'm glad Suburbicon tanked.  I don't have a problem with Matt Damon taking the paycheck.  However, I'm sick and tired of Clooney, and the Coen brothers have made some interesting movies but they aren't the cinematic geniuses that they think they are.   I'm also tired of the media blowing smoke up their arses.

I figured that it was in trouble because the trailer I saw didn't seem to be advertising the film I heard Damon and Clooney talking about at TIFF.
