S06.E11: The Maddie Rumor

Maddie's nominated for a People's Choice Award, leading the media to speculate if she's leaving the ALDC. Later, the moms are furious with Abby when she takes an unexpected date to the ceremony; and a new mini's attitude causes a dance disaster.

These moms are really the worst. Especially Jill.  Abby may have had ulterior motives for picking Brynn, but it would still have been a really cool experience for her and they completely ruined it. I also can't believe Melissa actually said picking her because she hadn't been to any award shows before was "a dumb reason." It's probably about the fairest way she could have picked. I could get if she didn't believe that was the reason Abby picked her, but don't say it's a dumb reason.

 

It was funny how Kalani and Kendall said they wouldn't go because they didn't want to take Brynn's place, but Jill was ready to accept until she realized how bad it made her look. Although I'm not sure if Kendall would have done that if she wasn't following Kalani's lead.

 

I liked the brunette mini giving a pep talk to Peyton. She seemed so confident and sassy with it, and it actually seemed to have worked.

 

I don't get why new moms are surprised when they come on and Abby acts awful to their kids. That's basically the premise of the show.

 

It's so funny when they pretend they aren't on a TV show. "People on the red carpet asked me if I was leaving ALDC."  No, they asked if you were leaving Dance Moms. No one cares about the ALDC.

 

Did anyone else catch Melissa saying winning the PCA was the best moment of "our life." I get why it would be a great moment for her as a mom, but she doesn't share a life with Maddie.

Jill has to be acting, because I refuse to believe that any adult would seriously crush a child's chance to go to an award show so that she could go.  I just can't believe an adult human who wasn't an absolute monster would do such a thing.  Kalani was the only one who showed any class or compassion.  Kendall's little smug smile said it all for her (could have been editing, but Kendall has been undercover snotty towards Brynn the entire season so I believe it).  That Jill was actually going to take the ticket was just the very worst, the very, very worst, and its getting into territory where I just want nothing to work for Jill or Kendall, and I hate that I would be so petty.  But really?  And then to claim that it wasn't her fault that Brynn couldn't go?  I may not agree with Abby, and I may find her reprehensible, but she is about 100 x better than Jill in my book.  I don't think Abby actively looks for ways to destroy any of the girls the same way Jill is on some mission to destroy a 11 year old girl at every possible turn.  And I blame all the mothers for not speaking up for Brynn.  Wasn't it just last week that they all got upset with Ashlee for not speaking up for their children and "doing whats right" but Jill's behavior gets a pass?

 

I do not really care about the mini's, but that new dance mom had to be a production plant.  Because....just no.

 

I wouldn't put it past Abby to have gone into some psuedo racist rant......or at least be thinking it and realized she can't say it on TV.  But her point was well received.  Listen, I wouldn't put my kids in Abby's class, but if you choose to put your kids in her class, don't be shocked when she does, what she is known for doing.

Unfortunately on the comp circuit, the answer is yes here.  It's always a joy to see a real crew come in and smash all of the white studio hip hop numbers to bits. ;)

 

On a good note, I really liked the group dance a lot.  I thought that the trio for the minis was really good for a mini dance as well, well done for the girls performing the heck out of it after reblocking the whole thing in a day.  So Peyton is six and the other two are nine and ten?

Hello all! I am finally coming out of lurking on this forum for a long time.

 

Oh wow! Kaylee is an incredible dancer! I'm interested in that social media post her mum made - was that later taken down?

 

It's a shame such a talented little dancer would show herself up on tv like that. No of course she shouldn't have been dancing with 6-year-olds and that must have been quite a shocker, but she - or at least her mum - should have been more aware of how that sulky attitude would come off on tv. And you never should pull out of a commitment on the day. Just do it - it's one day - and you won't make your incredible little dancer look bad on national television.

 

I agree that Kendall would have gone to People's Choice if Kalani hadn't JUST turned it down. Kalani seems like a lovely girl. Kendall - unfortunately - does seem like a mean girl. I noticed on instagram the other day she posted all of the girls hugging (except Brynn) and made a comment like 'this is the real team' or something. It was the same day it was announced Brynn would be travelling to Europe with Abby. Now that's mean girl behaviour. If I was in any doubt watching the show, I'm in no doubt now. And whilst her technique and turns are lovely, she is not going to make it, I don't think. Zero stage presence, absolutely below average in that department. And as someone said, if she was going to get any offers, she'd have them by now.

 

I feel desperately sorry for Brynn. However it looked like she wasn't actually there when the mums were bleating on about how 'disappointed' Melissa would be. It was edited to look like she was standing right there, but if you watch closely I don't think she was. I hope not. If so, those women are vile.

Anyway, so the awards. Jill was disgusting, she actually wanted to take it from Brynn, that was so mean not to just let Brynn go. And you could tell Kendall only said no because Kalani was kind enough to do so. Poor Brynn.

As for Kaylee Quinn, she came across as a terrible brat. I saw on the Morales kid's mother's blog that she is saying the Quinns are soooo lovely and the blonde mini/her mum are the horrible ones. Well.. Kaylee might have had a bad edit but the footage was real, and you'd never have seen the aldc girls acting like that. Brooke put up with it all when she was on the show. Altough I would have liked to see Kaylee with the juniors..

The minis.. nice work on the dance I suppose, who is the dark sassy one? I like her, she should stay. Ditch blondie and her porn star faces, and Peyton because her mother is much too rough.

I have to agree with the others.  At this point Jill is either acting and going full ham for the cameras knowing Dance Moms is on its last legs, or she's just an absolutely awful person.  Poor Brynn. Get the girl all excited to go and then take it away from her because it's not fair that Kendall, Maddie's best friend, doesn't get to go.  Or that Jill doesn't get to go. Kendall has been on a million red carpets.  Also petty but I seriously question Maddie's judgment that Kendall is her supposed best friend.

 

About the only positive I took from the whole thing is Kehlani, who showed herself to be about a million times cooler and more mature than the moms.  I don't really give Kendall the same credit, which maybe it was editing, but I don't really think she didn't go because of Brynn.  She looked just as shocked and appalled as Jill that Brynn got the invite.  But I also think after Kehlani turned it down she knew at least how awful she would look if she said yes.  So I guess she at least has more self awareness than her mother.

 

I've actually been liking most of the group routines of late.  I thought this one was a good type of routine for Nia.  She looked strong.  Not as much for someone like Jojo who seemed to be struggling some.  I completely missed Maddie's routine but it looked like a fairly generic contemp routine.  The minis did decently as well all things considering.

Of course, Maddie will be leaving the team the minute she's no longer on contract to be on it for the show. Why would that be surprising?

FWIW, I have an 11 yr old who, last year, got stuck doing a power puff girls themed routine, in a Jazz class ranging from ages 7-10. She wasn't happy about it, either. She was just fortunate that her sighs and eye rolls were mostly limited to in the car, not documented on reality TV. I do think that sometimes instructors go by what they think is cute, and forget that there's a big,difference emotionally in a few years time.

I don't like how Brynn was treated on this show. It was too much hate. The child was an invited guest on the team. All of the mothers acted like cannibales on this team. I don't have an unfavorable opinion about the girl not wanting to dance with six years olds. She acted like a kid that got her feelings hurt. These mothers would be angry if one of their daughters like Nina, Maddie, or Kendall had to be a member of this team. If I was the kid, I would feel embarrassed to dance with the babies too. If I was the mother, I would have left after learning what team Abby would have placed my daughter. She was using the girl, not helping. Maddie will not be Kendall's best friend (did Maddie say Bf or just the moms) for long. She is moving on to bigger and better things. Kendall will be her old friend. Maddie is a social climber. I think Kendall was just her ally for this show. I don't like how Abby puts the kids against each other. All of the guest dancers should assume Abby does not have their best interest. She likes to use guest dancers to light the fire of her dancers. Abby built her team too much around Maddie. She made Maddie the show. She should not had Maddie the bar, but her high standards. Then she could had a bunch of Maddies on her team and then everybody would be replaceable. I'm ready for a new dance studio for dance moms.

Or I wonder if production told that family the older girl would be dancing w/ junior/teen team and then sprung the "you're dancing w/ the minis in a babyish monster dance" on her live on camera to get the reaction they wanted.

The practice of strategically placing a couple really talented/skilled 9/10 year olds who just happen to LOOK like they are only 7 years old in mini group dances is a very common practice in competition dance.

Or Melissa could have just given Jill tickets in the first place since they are so close and all.  I don't doubt for a second that Jill deliberately keeps herself/Kendall in Maddie and Melissa's orbit in hopes that some of Maddie's fame and opportunities (or at least perks) will rub off on Kendall.  It's a lot more advantageous for Jill to make sure Kendall is close with Maddie than it is to make sure Kendall is friends with Nia or Jojo.  And Melissa probably enjoys people that suck up to her and tell her that she and her kids are the greatest, most talented people ever.

I know, right?  I'm not that impressed with the extreme flexibility - and I am not defending her attitude... but her relevé is wowza, especially for her age!

 

Also, forgot to add: favorite part of the episode, by far, was the shot of Maddie getting glammed up juxtaposed with milk dribbling down Abby's chin from her cereal, hahahahahaha.

Speaking of Jill, she also cropped Brynn out of a pic of the girls from the Kids Choice Awards the other night, so where do you think Kendall learns it from?  I also don't think Jill realizes that her behavior is having the absolute opposite effect with fans.  The more she dumps on Brynn, all she's doing is drumming up sympathy and fans for Brynn and turning Brynn into the rootable underdog.  Jill is also playing the "it's all production" card on twitter and that Ashlee took the opportunity away from Brynn.

I actually didn't think she was that bratty. Teens/Preteens roll their eyes a lot. And her mom kept asking her how she felt about having to dance with the little kids, so they were really setting her up to look bratty. I think something happened that we didn't see on camera though, because what her mom supposedly posted online didn't seem like a normal reaction to what we saw.

That hip hop was adorable. It's not unusual for kids to start off with basic old school hip hop. I can't imagine much else at a regular dance competition.

That trio on the other hand, horrifying. What is with the slinky walks and hips all over the place? So tacky. Let them learn some control before anything.

THIS was repeated in my house 100 times.  I'll give you based on that clip, Kaylee can dance but that is not an excuse for the pouting, eye rolling (just because teens do it doesn't make it right) or attitude she had.  My 15 yr old daughter plays piano, IMHO, she is amazing.  She sits through recital every year listening to Mary Had a Little Lamb by 5 yr olds. If her teacher told her to play a duet with said 5 yr old at a competition she would do it and I would pop her in the head if she rolled her eyes at her teacher!

 

As far as Brynn, I didn't like what the moms did but ultimately I blame Abby and that's who I'd be POd at in the end.  Abby invited her, dressed her up (with production help because they had clothes ready for her) then said oh the moms are complaining, I just won't take her.  Guess what ABBY COULD have and SHOULD have just said, it's my ticket for a plus one, she's my plus one: GET OVER IT and took that child with her.   Finally, I blame her mother because if Brynn my mine, I'd pay whatever fines they threw at me and I'd be DONE with this show.

I think both the storyline with Kaylee and the minis and the revoked-invitation to Brynn were both written for the show. Neither made much sense in the real world. Why did Kaylee get so upset for one little dance - especially because as an older girl with little ones she would have shined (shone?) Why would Abby rescind the invitation to Brynn because Jill was pissed? 

 

I've given up trying to figure out whose side production is - are they trying to make Abby look bad, the moms look bad, the competitions themselves look bad?

I think Brook's age brought them up to Jrs from the start.  It's not meant to be diminutive to call them Minis it's the category that they compete in, or sometimes it's referred to as Petites.  It means the 6-9 age group at competitions, generally speaking.

On her instagram, Kaylee (or, quite obviously, her mother) posted that the reason she left was not because she was dancing with the minis (she even claims that she sometimes competes in minis with her sisters and enjoys it) but because of the way the adults were treating the children - and that it was actually her two little sisters that wanted to not come back most of all.  Who knows what the truth is though...

 

I've also noticed that Jill clings to the fact that Kendall is Maddie's "best friend" like its some sort of prize.  It's so sad.  Jill can't be too happy with how things are.  For better or worse Abby HAS chosen Brynn as her Maddie replacement.  Brynn is plastered all over Abby's instagram, she is doing master classes with her, she is the only DM girl with her on tour in Norway/Ireland/UK right now.  It kind of makes sense -- she can't take Maddie, because I'm sure Maddie has better things to do.  Kalani is now a solid teen, which Abby doesn't really want, because her thing has always been mini/Junior.  I'm also sure Kira doesn't want to travel around now that she has a baby.  Mack, Kendall and Nia are just not really good enough dancers to be demonstrating with her.

I don't see any of them too anxious to leave and go home.  They harped on Maddie's mom asking what her plans were so they could make plans.  I think that without Maddie the show probably doesn't want to keep Kendall, Nia, etc.

I think those pictures were from the Kid's Choice Awards. The People's Choice Awards were back in January.
