ljenkins782 December 22, 2015 Share December 22, 2015 I don't love this season enough to rewatch the whole thing, but I watched a couple of episodes near the Outcast twist just to watch Savage's original Survivor dream get crushed. I'd forgotten about the raiding of the losing camp and there is a classic scene of Sandra taking Morgan's tarp. They all sat around like grumpy brats and didn't help her take it down, so she basically tore the whole thing apart while Savage stands there making snide comments and attempting to be superior. So funny. But overall, I think Lill is the main reason I can't enjoy this season that much. Why on earth did they vote her back in out of all of the outcast options? She's just so uncomfortable to watch. 2 Link to comment
fishcakes February 27, 2016 Share February 27, 2016 Here we go. Because of people like Christa, we have to show our driver's licenses whenever we want to buy cold medicine. The references to Vivarin are oddly quaint, though. I'm surprised by Ryan Shoulders being an acid freak and thinking how Lil would cry and cry if she knew. And it makes me laugh to think of him wanting tips on what activities to do when he's tripping on acid but kind of bored. 2 Link to comment
Lamima December 27, 2016 Share December 27, 2016 watching this season now and it ain't the best season. Why they let Fair play and Burt stick around.????? A lot of dumb naïve chicks. Christa just got voted off and they are down to 5. And I am about to go away for a week so can't finish until I get back. No biggie. Link to comment
Runningwild March 28, 2018 Share March 28, 2018 Rewatching this season again. Most of the time Rupert is buffoonish and irritating with acting like they’re actually pirates but his verbal assault on Fairplay was frightening. I had forgotten that or missed it the first time. This season had one of my favorite challenges in terms of eliciting a "That looks insanely fun," reaction from me. It was the reward challenge where the teams were in boats, and the object was to sink the other team's boat. This could be accomplished by removing plugs along the side of the boat (using a gaff), which would allow water to get in. Each side also had buckets, so that people in the boat could try to bail it out, but teams found it easier to try to throw water into the other team's boat. Rupert won it for his team by using the gaff to push the front of the other team's boat under water. I would love to get a bunch of friends together and recreate that challenge. 1 4 Link to comment

I'm rewatching all the seasons in order and I'm on this season right now. Young Ryan did look a lot like a young Henry Fonda, but he's grown out of it. Still handsome, but all that gray in his beard made me look up exactly how long it's been since Pearl Islands -- 15 years! Now I feel old. Here's another recent picture he posted where he's a pretty good double for Tom Selleck. I'd be interested in seeing Ryan return. He seemed like a good guy (I adore the scene where he's talking to the brown pelican), did well in challenges, and showed he had a decent grasp of strategy after the merge when he tried to get Burton and Lill to join him, Tijuana, and Darrah to take out Rupert, Sandra, Christa, and Jon. It didn't go anywhere, but it was better than Andrew's non-strategy of being pissy with Lill so that she would feel okay about flipping on his dumb ass. One thing I'm really enjoying on this rewatch is that Probst doesn't try to hide his feelings about Fairplay at all. "Are you loaded?" "Is that a respectful way to treat a tribemate?" "What is [mocking Jon's stupid crossed arms and two fingers out gesture] THIS?" No one does absolute visceral hatred better than Jeff. Edited August 23, 2018 by fishcakes 2 3 Link to comment

Lol, are you saying Savage's expectation that all players he deemed non-worthy should bow down and let him glide across their backs to the million was not a sound strategy? Say it ain't so... I did like RynO, but when I originally watched the season, I was on the Rupert train (seems unimaginable now), so the whole Morgan tribe took a backseat. Plus, the stink of Savage's arrogance clouded my view of the main alliance on the Morgan side. Yeah, he was bound and determined not to let Fairplay promote himself and went way out of his way to point out what a jackass he was. Very satisfying to watch. It still blows my mind that Fairplay came so close to making the end. I honestly think he could have won against Lil, which would have been the show's worst nightmare outcome. There are some villains that can win without hurting the narrative, like Hatch, but a Fairplay type winning the game? That would be a horrible ending for an audience who spent the season waiting for him to get his comeuppance. 1 2 Link to comment
KimberStormer August 28, 2018 Share August 28, 2018 I mean, I dunno. I think Fairplay played a sound game, certainly running rings around the rest of that dull crew, led by two self-important no-strategy-allowed morons in Savage and Rupert. And using Gorgeous George-derived self-conscious pro wrestling heel performance paradigms as a tactic in a reality TV show is sort of an amazing conceptual move. Especially when you consider that his ultimate goal was to somehow make himself, so tiny and skinny, into an actual WWE star, an ambition so bizarre and grandiose that "Win Survivor" was just, like, step one; it amazes and delights me. I am very glad that he did not inaugurate an era of clownish trolling in Survivor, but I would have loved to see his FTC performance. Lil was his ideal opponent there, the only person, probably, he had a chance against -- but the chance was there. Could he have thrown Fairplay off of himself and become Dalton? And told them it was all kayfabe? They couldn't possibly deny the outrageous performativity of it all. Like, with Phillip or whoever, we know everyone was hoping he'd reveal his whole thing was a put-on, but Fairplay was throwing his weird gang signs and shit from day one, they couldn't possibly deny that of course it was a put-on, the crude rubber mask was always barely fitting and slipping around his head. 1 5 Link to comment

He actually did play a decent game, I just couldn't stand him. The best thing about a Fairplay/Lill FTC would have been Savage's head exploding off his body at the thought of voting for either one of them. And I do think he would have beaten Lill. The outcast twist rankled people too much, though I think Burton could possibly have pulled off a win. Lill was problematic in so many ways already and such a terrible speaker. She didn't deserve a lot of the crap she got for her Scout uniform and all, but she also didn't have the speaking skills to properly defend herself. 6 Link to comment
RescueMom November 25, 2018 Share November 25, 2018 I am watching this season for the first time right now, and came here to post about the Rupert screaming-in-rage incident that was discussed a lot above. I’m appalled that he wasn’t pulled from the game for that. Jon is an ass but Rupert wasn’t going at him for that, but because Jon had the nerve to vote for him. This giant baby bully towering over a slight guy screaming in rage because he did what you do in this game - tried to make a move. Fuck you, Rupert. I was actually liking him a little before that which amazed me because I hated him in subsequent seasons. And I actually have a smidgen of respect for how well Fairplay handled it - didn’t escalate it, but didn’t back down to Rupert’s threatening rage either. I don’t think I would have handled it so well. 8 Link to comment
kittykat December 29, 2018 Share December 29, 2018 Having rewatched this I still think this is probably still in the Top 10 seasons. Definitely one of the better casts, which definitely makes or breaks a season. Rupert, as I remembered, started off endearing and then got real annoying. Getting all high and mighty because he caught fish and did camp work. Has anyone since Season 3 three actually been voted off because they didn't do any work? Laziness kind of gets mentioned but as long as they're in the right alliance or do well in challenges they stay, it was only the really early seasons that work ethic became a reason to vote off someone. Jon I hated less maybe because I know he doesn't win or maybe because he comes off more buffoonish than I remember. Weirdly enough I had forgotten all about Grandmagate until the episode aired. Looking back on repeats and surprised that only four (Rupert, Sandra, Jon, Andrew) have returned to future seasons. Agree upthread about those who thought Ryan O highly underrated. He had the right strategy and the right social game, unfortunately no one went with him. It would be interesting to see how he would have fared in a later season. The Morgan fatal mistake was not accepting Lil back in the fold. If they had done that they could have easily gone the other way with welcoming Lil and getting her to flip Burton but Andrew gotta Andrew. Funny he pretty much finished in the same spot both times meaning: not far. I thought Darrah was highly underrated. The voice may have grated, but she basically, like Sandra, threw her vote to whichever side would have her as long as it wasn't her. I think the only thing that brought her to people's attention was her immunity run near the end but I found her a worthy F4 player. 4 Link to comment

Yep, Andrew sank his entire team's chances by imposing his own high school-level social order that couldn't be deviated from. He's clearly used to being able to treat people as "less than" and get away with it, but I'm not sure what the rest of his tribe was thinking following him. I remember not liking Darrah all that much just because there was something a little dismissive in the way she treated a lot of people. But it would have been interesting to see her chances had she not been on the dummy tribe that blindly followed Andrew into the fire. Also, I would have liked to see Sandra on a tribe with Andrew, I wonder how that would have gone. He obviously would not have respected her physical abilities in challenges so I don't see her being able to get on his chosen ones list, but he wouldn't have been able to push her around to the degree that he did Ryan S and Lill. 4 Link to comment
Lantern7 May 16, 2019 Share May 16, 2019 (edited) Is Lillian Morris out there? In the aftermath of last night, I'd like to know what the first finalist to bounce back from getting voted out thought of EoE. Yeah, she was weird, but I don't feel she deserved the stomping that the bulk of the jury gave her. And I'm certain that if she had known they'd be getting marooned with their posing clothes, she wouldn't have dressed in her Boy Scout gear. Edited May 16, 2019 by Lantern7 3 Link to comment

AncientNewbie May 4, 2020 Share May 4, 2020 I just finished my (re?)watch (that part of my life is a little foggy) and I have to say, I probably liked it a lot more knowing the events than if I'd been doing it real time. I really liked the Outcast surprise, though. I'm not an EoE fan, but the fact it was a complete surprise and short term made an interesting twist. I was curious about the "if Lill took Jon" question and, even though Probst asked it at the reunion, I still don't know. The reunion special straw poll has the bias of everyone having seen the season and time elapsing to process the events, so even if people are legitimately trying to state how they'd have acted, it's never going to be certain. Add in that Jon didn't get jury questions or to make a statement...he's clearly a better speaker than Lill and was at least playing his version of the game. Add in the post-show interview where it's indicated the Outcasts voted Lill in just to get rid of her and the fact that Sandra won in a walk because the jury didn't buy Lill's story...I don't know. Of course, then we end up in this alternate universe where a lot of Rupert's bad moments are aired and Sandra is just a catty mean girl and Evil Mortician Darrah is barely stopped from unseating Our Hero... Last thought is I'm so glad Andrew Savage lost. It seems every few years we get an Fit Older Wealthy Guy who is just sure that he's innately superior to everyone else and then he disproves it by blowing up his own game being smug and condescending. I work with a lot of those guys IRL so I derive special enjoyment when they collapse. 5 Link to comment
BK1978 May 14, 2020 Share May 14, 2020 I posted this in the Media section as well, but I thought some people who might not check that thread out, might come across it in here... I came across a mini Survivor Pearl Islands reunion hosted by Fairplay on YouTube yesterday. I was shocked that it first aired seventeen years ago. The guests were Jonny, Sandra, Burton, Savage, and Trish. It was pretty fun and informative to watch, though Savage sort of dominated the conversation. Here are some of the stuff I remember... -One of the funny things they talked about was, the reason why Lil was voted back into the game was because Michelle and Nicole did not want Lil coming with them on their pre-jury vacation. -Sandra said that Pearl Islands will always be her favorite season she was on. -Savage is still very bitter about The Outcast twist and he seemed to bristle at the mere mention of it. -Savage and Sandra both confirmed that they put tablets in the tribe's water in order to purify it. They did not do this on Peal Islands. Savage said that Lex from Africa got messed up for years because he drank unpurified water (Though he did not say if it was when he was on Africa or All-Stars). -We already know this but Sandra hates EOI and would rather have the game played like it originally was. - Jonny talked about Rupert's book and he said the first few chapters of the book was Rupert complaining about people who he felt screwed him over in his personal life. Like someone promised to give Rupert so much money to build a deck and then paid him a hundred dollars less. It was funnier when Fairplay said it. -Both Burton and Trish want to play again. Sandra said she was retired but then smirked when asked if there was a certain amount of money that would get her out of retirement. -Trish still doesn't believe that the village lady was flirting with her. Sandra was like, "No trust me, she was flirting with you." It was a pretty long video but it was very interesting to watch. 2 2 Link to comment

Through the course of these troubled quarantined times a friend reminded me that Survivor existed (I checked out after the first All Stars, for the most part.). She was watching Heroes & Villains and I was reminded that Rupert existed, and that reminded me of how much I loved Sandra winning so I watched this season again. Of the 8 (or maybe 9) seasons I watched, I like this one the best, and I'm not sure why. I could be the location, or the fact that I liked the winner so much. And I, like a lot of folks, thought Rupert was delightful at first, and then...no. His blowup at Jonny Fairplay was scary, honestly, and if I didn't think Fairplay was such a shit bag, I would have cared. I was surprised that on rewatch, Fairplay seemed much less like, horrible, and just like, a pathetic buffoon. He laughed harder at himself than anyone else did. However, I STILL am STUNNED that anyone bought his dead grandmother story. I hope to god there is about 10 minutes of cutting-room floor footage of other people grilling him on details. Fairplay is a terrible actor, his friend was worse, Probst was legit surprised. No way I would have ever believed it. I know it's easy to armchair QB Survivor, and I would run screaming home the first time I had to poop in the woods, but my GOD I can't believe anyone believed that shit. It wasn't even clever. Burton was as handsome and arrogant as I remember. RyanO was a cutie patootie. Savage reminds me so much of an actor who I can't identify and it drives me crazy. He's such a generic Ken doll shell — and blinded by his own arrogance. 5 Link to comment
Lantern7 May 18, 2020 Share May 18, 2020 Before the loved ones' visit, Rupert was voted out. I'm gonna say it: if he was still there, Jon would have aborted the scheme. Seriously, if there's a guy there that already threatened you, and he would find out he was deprived of seeing his wife (I'm assuming it would've been Lauren) because of a fictitious dead grandma? You'd pull the plug. Jon and his buddy probably had a safe word for that sort of thing . . . or perhaps I'm giving those two too much credit. He's such a generic Ken doll shell — and blinded by his own arrogance. I've been rewatching this season -- except for episode 6, which I can't find anywhere but on CBS -- and Andrew looks like Matthew Morrison to me. I'm disappointed Hulu doesn't have episode 6 because that's the one in which Osten is terrorized by the pelican. I still can't believe they kept Osten as long as they did and kept talking about how strong he was and how much they needed him. He let the tribe down in challenges over and over again. 2 Link to comment

Yes, the "dead" one. https://ew.com/tv/survivor-jonny-fairplay-arrested-larceny/ 1 Link to comment

fishcakes October 19, 2022 Share October 19, 2022 The Fairplay story is from a couple of years back. Apparently all charges were dismissed for lack of evidence. I wouldn't know whether it really happened or they were falsely accused by another relative, but it's an ugly story no matter what. Link to comment
