The Behind The Scenes thread is not a spoiler thread.  So spoilers, including casting information, do not belong in here.  The "behind the scenes" information specifically related to casting should go in either the spoiler thread or the Salem International thread which discusses. departures and arrivals thread.

I doubt Marlena will be paired with Roman again now, much less another man. Most of her storylines (at least under Ron) were her hypnotizing patients or palling around with pet characters like Leo, Alex and Paulina. Doc's kids - Belle, Sami, Carrie and Eric - are no longer in Salem. Her family is Brady, Tate, Holly and Johnny, all of whom are more involved with other characters.

Sure, she has lots of friends....but most of her scenes and stories were with John. That's over now.

I hope they are able to still give her good material somehow moving forward.

Honestly at this point in her life, Marlena doesn't really need a love interest(I'm not opposed to one I just never found it necessary for this character).  I mean Alice never moved on from Tom but she was still important and part of a lot of stories until her passing. Just have her deal with the drama of her children and grandchildren. Like what they are doing with Maggie right now. I don't expect her to have another love interest after Victor at this point in her life and same with Julie and Doug.

I wouldn't be surprised in a year or two if they either brought back Don Craig (new actor of course) or brought a new distinguished actor to Days for a pairing with Deidre.

A mature love story could be interesting.

We also still don't know what that Alison Sweeney storyline is, it could be John's death. TPTB may have known he was terminal and not filming anymore.  So we may see it in March or April, instead of the summer.

There's absolutely no reason to recast Don Craig. It's bad enough his exit was going to the post office and never returning I don't see the point in bringing him back. Especially since this show barely acts like he was a significant part of Days history(he was married to Maggie and Julie's first love) beyond referencing DJ's death. However I'm not opposed to Marlena finding romance at her age either.

I could see them bringing back Wayne Northrup in another role(although I doubt he would do this unless Days were to end or Deidre wanted to retire).

OK if they bring back Wayne Northrup and say that the guy running the Brady Publ all this time was Chris Kositcheck I will never stop laughing.

That thought has crossed my mind tbh. I would be all for it. Wayne was my favorite Roman but I do think Drake has just as much of a claim on that role too tbh.

Super glad to hear Anna and Will are back. Missed them.

I hope all these returns are both for a John memorial and something more fun. A whole bunch of cameos for only a day or two are nice but spreading out returns over a few weeks gives us time to catch up with the characters.

I'm not particularly excited to see Ciara, though. Am I alone in that?

Agree about the bad exit of Don Craig. But the point of bringing anyone back is simply about nostalgia. Most fans enjoy seeing their favorites again (i.e. Bo & Hope), even if it's just for a brief storyline.

You're not alone.  I was hoping she and OllieBenAlex had taken a three hour tour on the Minnow and would never be seen again.

She's so insufferable I'd rather watch Kristen or even Paulina.  Typing that actually HURT.

I'd rather that they won't bring back Don Craig with a recast out of respect for Jed Allan's memory. They had plenty of times to approach him, seek reconciliation and resolve this matter when he was available, so why now? Those favorites you mentioned have ties to Salem and aren't forgotten unlike Don.

Also, hate to say it but...there have been few instances where a character firmly written out was brought back for something worthwhile in the last decade.

Jack, Bo, Megan, Kristen, Ava and Abigail were all exhumed for the shock value and have floundered utterly since.

Vivian is probably the only character who has come back multiple times and still been fun (because she's fun to write for and silliness suits her). And Will should have never been killed off in the first place.

Don Craig? Would that really be a worthwhile return?

I understand people grieve differently. But that statement sounded like it was most definitely written by a PR person or an AI bot. After all the fans that adored Deirdre and Drake as a couple she could’ve at least, or whoever wrote it, make it sound  a little more personal. I mean, you compare that to Stephe Nichols, Patrika Darbo, etc., and it is really lacking. There  is no excuse for something so cold, if indeed it was written by someone else, they did a pretty bad job displaying any sort of emotion or affection > I think fans of the couple expected something more touching. I guess reality gets confused with make believe . But moving on. She was never my favorite character although I did like some of the storylines through the years. I think her partners brought out the best in her.

Not if they've been paying attention to Deidre in general for the last decade or so. I'm not saying she's a bad person, but folks have called her character RoboMar for a reason. Her performance has become more removed over time. Maybe she has too. She doesn't fawn much these days in interviews. Maybe its just her natural personality, maybe its aging, maybe its other stuff, who knows.

Performative grief is tacky. I'm sure nobody who knows her personally is surprised she's not putting herself front and center here. It doesn't mean she hated Drake...maybe she's much more private than we previously realized? Who knows.

Jarlena arguably was the show's biggest love story, but...it's make-believe. It's all pretend. She isn't required to sob on camera for us to be reassured or something (not saying you suggested that). Whether she adored him or not isn't our business. Others clearly did, and that's comforting to know.

...I don't understand it either and I'd like to think they were great colleagues...but I'm not surprised and I'm giving her a pass on this.

While I agree in Don Craig's case the actor has passed it wouldn't be the same with a recast.

That being said I'm all for returns of old characters especially since we don't know who much time Days has left tbh.

Not without Jed Allan in the role? If he was still around I would consider it but he passed in 2021 so I don't see a recast hitting the same.

Dee's reaction to Jed Allan's passing was in stark contrast with her response to Drake's. I don't want to take a wild guess here but agreed with you she could have been at least more personal in her statement about Drake's passing like many others did. Otherwise it may give the impression she wouldn't care much unless the said colleague passed away was her closest friend.

But alas, it is not to be.

Yep he could've told us that line at the post office lasted longer than he thought.

A now-widowed Eugene Bradford would be a nice return to Salem.  His wackiness could help Marlena work through her loss.  Yes, their marriage was short-lived, and invalid, but the chemistry was always off the charts.

I would be open to this but I remember John DeLancie not having great memories of Days when he left. He did offer his condolences about Arleen though which surprised me because he barely talks about Days otherwise.

Isn't that who Samantha Gene Brady is named after. I didn't know Marlena and Eugene were married. Eugene was before I started watching. I thought they were just best friends.

I'm not worried about Marlena's place on canvas. Marlena was single for years after the Roman/Marlena/John triangle when Marlena was still in front burner storylines and still at an age when dating is optimum on Soaps.

After John "died" in the mid-2000s, the show attempted to pair Marlena with Roscoe Born's character, Melanie's father at the time.

Marlena is also often used to give pet characters credibility on canvas, i.e. Paulina, Ben, Leo, Sarah, when she first returned to canvas as an adult.

Marlena and John also haven't had a front-burner storyline in more than a year. The Devil possession is the last I can think of. Before that was when Hope believed she was Princess Gina.

John wasn't featured much even before the tragic news regarding Drake.

I think Marlena will be fine.

Back in the early 80s, Andre DiMera wore a Wayne Northrup Roman Brady mask and went on a killing spree.  Roman faked his death and went into hiding.  Alice, Bo, Anna, Eugene, and Marlena were the only ones who knew Roman was alive, and were the few who believed he was not guilty.  Bo and Alice arranged for Marlena and Roman to have a romantic reunion.  Of course, Marlena became pregnant (with the twins).  Everyone did the math, and knew that Roman was dead.  Eugene stepped up and claimed to be Baby Daddy.

A clueless Dr Tom Horton stepped in and arranged a surprise wedding for his staff psychiatrist and her patient-turned-bestie.  I cannot recall if Alice told Tom the truth before or after the quick ceremony.  I think she told him before, but the Hortons decided it was best to go through with the ruse, to protect Roman on the run.

By chance I just stumbled upon something hilarious on Reddit. A user named final_lair posted the following entries:

"my mom wrote for DOOL for a long time. if she wanted an idea, i'd spout out the most ridiculous shit i could think of and sometimes she'd actually put it in the show lol"

After getting some nudging they elaborated:

"i was mostly in charge of (sometimes) naming new characters. like the cute boy doctor (Shiff/Shift depending on what closed caption says) that does Rachel's ultrasound with the chin dimple - he was on Days and I got to name him. I named him Dr Jonas, because I love the Jonas Brothers 😂😂😂

But there's one instance where my mom was trying to get an idea, and I offhandedly said "just put her in a drawer or something," and so she did. one girl ended up in a morgue drawer. i think it was stephanie or something lol"

Does any of that track, for those of you who watched during that period? And is that the real origin of Dr Tan Man's name? LOL

A quick bit of research says it is possible that could be the real origin of Dr. Tan Man's name. The Jonas Brothers rose to fame in 2006-2007 and Dr. Dan did not appear on the show until 2008.

It makes sense. Jan Spears was more than likely named in honor of Britney Spears, and Ciara Brady was around the time Ciara the singer was hugely popular.

And yes, EJ had Stephanie locked in a morgue drawer during one of the Kiriakis vs Dimera wars, which always sounded good in theory but was boring in execution. Stephanie was dating Philip at the time. Wes Ramsey was her kidnapper and the show had dialogue stating he had a twin brother. Nothing came from that dialogue.

I'm pretty sure Ciara was the result of a naming contest that NBC held. It was 2006, so yeah- "My Goodies" and her collaboration with Missy Elliot "Lose Control"  were pretty big hits around this time.

I remember someone making fun of her name and saying it sounded really pretentious for a salt-of-the-Earth mid-Western family.

Hope is a trust fund baby, so I wouldn't consider her a salt-of-the-earth type. While Bo is more down to earth, by the time they had Ciara, he'd sailed around the world on the Fancy Face, known several ultra-rich families like the Kirakis and the Alamains, was best friends with wealthy John Black, etc.

The Brady's aren't the typical working class, Mid-western family they once were.

What a wonderful discovery of a hidden gem! Long ago, Stars from Days and other daytime soaps had come together for a charitable project, a compilation of songs to raise awareness on child abuse and neglect.

The first song Eyes of A Child:

Well, now we know that he landed on his feet.  He made his way to the new soap in the making.

The only good thing about that is that he has a whole team of writers that will hopefully keep him in line and prevent him from manifesting some of his wackier and more ridiculously campy plot points.

He's not the head writer.  Michele Val Jean and Bob Guza are.  It sounds like Ron will either be a breakdown writer or a scriptwriter.

Michael Manning has joined the cast.  I loved him on DOOL.

Oof.  Guza being there is, in a lot of ways, worse.  After the hatchet job he did on GH, I'm not happy to hear that he was brought on.

He did some things, for sure.  But worse than Ron?  I don't know.  ValJean is the creator of the show so I imagine she's the ultimate creative force.

But another thing to remember is that The Gates has no history to ruin yet.

Considering Beyond the Gates is supposed to have a predominantly black cast, I think I'm a little more concerned for Guza's worst tendencies than Ron's worst tendencies. Granted maybe it was just the nature of General Hospital, but I in no way want to see the level of violence and the distorted moral compass Guza injected into General Hospital onto a predominantly black show. I also think Guza has women live for men in a much more extreme way than Ron. I actually think Ron is better at writing traditional heroines. I also think a character like Carly Manning would be eviscerated if she were portrayed by a black actress. I know Carly isn't popular on these boards, but a black  woman defending black men who live for illegality. No thank you! Again, Beyond the Gates is supposed to have a different focus, but Guza's writing, at times, would not only be offensive for a black cast but down right racist.  For General Hospital and a predominantly white cast, it was mostly just repetivie and boring and predictable.

I think Ron's worst traits is that he loves to live in the past, but for a new Soap that would be less of an issue. I also think he has a penchant for psychotic women - Jessica Buchanon; Marty Saybrook; Heather Webber; Connie Falconeri; Kristen Dimera. He also becomes too campy and too META in his writing. However, I also think he showed that he had potential with writing interesting black, female characters: Chanel and Paulina started with good to great writing and potential. He at least attempted to give Lani interesting material; although, I don't think the actress could handle it. He seemed comfortable allowing black characters to be in scenes together. I still remember Days having a record with the most black characters on screen in one scene.

This isn't me saying Ron is a great writer or great at black characters, but I think he's shown more skill than Guza. I have less concerns as long as someone can balance Ron's more destructive writing qualities.

On the plane home after my whirlwind trip to Los Angeles. I had a mostly positive experience. I arrived at the theatre just after 6am and instantly saw Cardboard Li in the foyer. I was thrilled that he was set up as a photo op. More on him later. Around 9:45 Brandon Barash (Stefan) came by to say hello.

We were let in right around 10am. System was four tables and you lined in rows in the auditorium. I went right to Line 2 and as we were first there was no waiting. I met Paul Telfer (Xander) and Linsey Godfrey (Sarah) and they were kind enough to sign a photo I brought and pose for photos. I got to put my arm around Paul so that happened.

Next up were Josh Taylor (Roman) and James Reynolds (Abe). I found speaking to them surprisingly moving, maybe because they are the age of my dad. Sal Strowers (Lani), Elia Cantu (Jada) and Tina Huang (Melinda) were all fabulous. Very happy to chat and really warm and friendly. Galen Gering (Rafe) was a bit more reserved. Tina agrees with me that Melinda and EJ need to hook up.

Went to group 4 line as it was the shortest. All the newbies. Cherie Jimenez (Gabi) was divine. I told her how much I enjoy her as Gabi and it seemed to mean a lot to her. Next to her was Al Calderon (Javi) who was also super, thrilled to be a part of it all especially after airing in only one episode. Colton Little (Andrew) was another really fun one to talk to. He remembered me chatting to him on Twitter about Charlotte Ross (ex Eve) and told me to tag him again.

Casey Moss (JJ) was much quieter and didn't get much from him. Kennedy Garcia (Felicity) was very shy and I think a bit overwhelmed. Raven Bowens (Chanel) and Ashley Puzemis (Holly) were much more chatty and looked amazing. Leo Howard (Tate) was really engaging too, very likable and interested in my insane one day trek from Eastern Canada.

After that we broke for lunch and the Day players performed as we sat in the next line. On a bathroom break I ran into Julie Dove (ex Connie) hanging out with Cardboard Li, so that was a photo I had to have. I think she was just there as a fan. She was pleased to hear how much I enjoyed the Li stuff.

Then the disorganization kicked in. We waited almost 3 hours for group 3. People were on stage and cutting into lines for other groups without waiting their turns. They extended the signing and we lucked out, we thought, as our line was called right before the final cut off. Then we were told we were going to group 4 again. Not happy.

Most of the line just gave up and left but four of us stuck around hoping for a change of heart by security. I pointed out as it was only 4 of us that we should be able to join the line we'd waited 3 hours for and they relented. We were frog marched by security on stage (where were they when people were line hopping?).

Jackee Harry (Paulina) had left by then and Brandon Barash (Stefan) had to go rehearse but the rest were still being gracious and kind to the fans. Dan Feuerriegel (EJ) introduced himself with "Hello I'm Daniel" lol. I told him I'm a long time viewer since his Spartacus days. John Paul Lavoisuer (Philip) was next and he was happy to hear I enjoy his odd take on Philip. He said he's all about entertaining and he will take any reaction as long as he gets one.

Lamon Archey (Eli) seemed worn out and didn't say much. Abigail Klein (Stephanie) was super pumped and her husband is from Montreal, where my car currently is. I hope I can find it. Then Stephen Nichols (Steve) and Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie). This is why I fought to stay in this line. I told him how much Steve and Kayla have meant to me and that he got me into this 40 year addiction. Susan was absolutely beautiful up close. All I could do was thank her for being such a treasure. Last up was Billy Flynn (Chad). I told him he must be exhausted and he was, but still made me do a selfie with him.

I'm sure the Q&A and promo are posted so won't cover those. Funny to see Emily O'Brien (Gwen) toss that hated wig. Very excited to see what's coming up. No complaints about anything in the preview!

All in all a successful day. Yes it could have been better organized but for a free event it was great. I didn't even attempt table 1 because the Deidre Hall (Marlena) draw meant everyone surged there, but when I was leaving I saw Brandon Beemer (Shawn) and Rob Wilson (Alex) leaving Starbucks.

That's a wrap. Going to sleep very well tonight!

Wow that sounds like a lot. Thanks for sharing under the Days tag on Twitter you see a lot more complaints and that it was very poorly set up.

Oh I'm seeing them. I just wanted to share my ultimately decent experience while it's still in my head.

We got a bag of free days swag and I have personalized head shots from all the actors I met. James apologized for his shaky signature which was kind of heartbreaking.

They needed to police the line cutters and maybe set a limit to admissions, but all in all I was able to enjoy the day.

I'm rather surprised BB was there since he publically said in a recent interview he doesn't trust the producers anymore for firing him.

Just so people know, this is run by the PR department of Peacock. He probably has no issue with them, and is still part of the Dayplayers who performedduring the lunch break.  Also Brandon came out with the cast introductions at the beginning of the event. The crowd went wild and he seemed really touched by that.
