S06.E05: Feeding Frenzy

Recommended Posts

The Recruits are faced with their biggest struggles yet: cooking for others in larger quantities. They are asked to make a breakfast for special guest star, Good Morning America's Meteorologist Ginger Zee, who happens to know a thing or two about how important breakfast is. Then they complete this week's challenge by throwing a dinner party for past Recruits, who know exactly what it's like to be in their shoes.

That's easy.  Just have Craft Services bring in something.  It's what all actors are used to.

I was hoping Norman would have made it instead of gaping fish mouth Leo.

I was also hoping Sharif would have made too instead of whack-a-doodle Sarah.

I have high hopes for Genique and the blonde girl on Ann's team.

I was sorry to see Norman and Sharif leave.  I liked both of them whereas Sarah is driving me nuts.  I don't get why she has so many THs.  She's obnoxious.

Was Sharif scoring his pork with a box knife?

Leo apparently got his hair cut between day 1 and day 2.  Some of the shots of things were suspicious too.  During the breakfast segment, the cooks were supposed to be serving fresh squeezed juice.  One of them on Tyler's team had two nearly empty glasses on his/her tray.  Someone on Anne's team, can't recall who, had no juice glasses on his/her tray at all.

I got a kick out of seeing Jaimie (sp.?) again.  I loved him during his season and thought he should have won.

Aw, man, I was quite fond of Norman and Sharif was growing on me....I hate Sara's voice but when they bleeped her swearing, I almost wish they didn't...hearing her drop some f-bombs in that voice would have cracked me up.  Or, it may have made me throw the tv out into the snowstorm.

Anyway, I was hoping it would be Norman and Genique in the final....now hopefully it's Genique and Christine with Genique winning it all.

It was nice seeing Jaime again--I wish he would have won last season.

So, a few weeks ago they couldn't cook anything, & this week they can suddenly make oysters Rockefeller & double creamed spinach from recipe cards. Oh yeah, I believe that. I would discuss this more, but I have to send some money to a Nigerian Prince who needs my help.

Two weeks ago they could all turn out crepes, but now pancakes are a problem?  But they can poach eggs and make Oysters Rockefeller?  Why do I watch this?

But on a purely food level, I don't think the menus hung together all that well.  On Tyler's team, there were the oysters, pork, potatoes, double cream spinach, and pudding cake.  There was nothing to alleviate the constant fattiness of each dish, nothing with acid or brightness. Ann's menu was only a tad more balanced; the salad/app course was laden with heaviness from the cheese, and while there were green beans (good gods, how I hate the term "haricot verts"...they are just fucking fresh green beans like I've been growing since I was a child), there was polenta and chicken thighs and ice cream in pastry.  They were both way too heavy.  For all that effort, the contestants should have just ordered pizza and garlic knots.

Ha ha ha ha!

Creamed spinach and oysters Rockefeller are VERY simple dishes, and the salad.   Wasn't Leo with the salad on Ann's team on the bottom?  Seems odd.  The editing was very choppy.  I did not notice the breakfast editing, but it may have been because they all made horrific mistakes and they had to re shoot it and used pieces from both takes.

Shucking oysters was the most difficult thing I saw tonight and Genique smoked that!

I see no ringers here.  None.  They are making rookie mistakes and we watch them fumble.

Shame on you Tyler!  He did not teach them how to make an omelet correctly.  They were all overly cooked (rubber) and flat.  Omelets are not flat.  The are soft tender and fluffy.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day?  No, no it isn't.  That is a long reported myth  Some eat breakfast and some do not.  It doesn't matter. Listen to your body.  Some say that the first meal of the day should consist of only fruit.  Others say protein,

only and some say do not eat until you have been up at least 2 hours.  Does it matter?  Nope.  I do know one thing, never eat when you are not hungry.

Profiteroles are very easy, too.

Genique is my favorite and I expect to see her in the finals.  I have warmed to Sara.  I loved her giving herself a hand slap.  She is doing fairly well, too.  Never expected that.

ETA-  Leo's hair was shorter for dinner so they were shot on different days.  During the breakfast it was the same.  His DTs are shot on a different day and it was a bit longer during those.

Let's just rename this show "Wannabe Comedians Pretend to be the Worst Cooks in America."  Sarah's mom teaches culinary arts.  Her brother owns a restaurant.  She has moved to LA to become a voiceover artist.  I smell a rat, and it's not Remy.

Now I'm hoping for a final two of Genique and Kristin. I still think Leo is a ringer from the way he flipped that crepe. I think you can learn to make good crepes in a week but I feel flipping it perfectly takes A LOT more practice than they would have done for this show. He flipped it without thinking about it, which means it's something he's used to doing. Sarah is constantly auditioning for her next role in everything she does on this show. It looks like she is talking constantly and making sound effects in hopes some of it will be included in the final edits.

I'm sorry Sharif went but that pork was a disaster. Both Sharif and Sarah did worse than Norman. Too bad it can't be who did the worst overall instead of one from each team.

I was hoping Leo and Sarah would be going instead of Norman and Sharif.  Leo and Sarah are nothing more than characters being portrayed on a show - and bad ones at that.  I hope Genique wins it all.  I just like her and she seems like she really wants to learn how to cook.  I'm sure, though, it will be someone on Anne's team to win because it's basically her show and Tyler is there to fill a seat.  At lest that's my view of the show.  I used to be a big fan of hers but she's just so obnoxious on this show.

You know Leo and Sarah are going to be the final two. You heard it here, folks.

I think you are right.  Leo will most likely win because of what team he is on. They are the two biggest gimmicks on the show so it's only natural - for me at least..  Too bad it couldn't be a draw and they both lose.  Still hoping against all odds it is Genique.

Okay so it wasn't just me who thought that. The whole time I was thinking it just didn't look good at all.

THANK YOU!  That drives me insane, too. I was pretty happy when they presented the dish as "green beans."

This is my first season watching this series. Wow. Is this show for real? Some of the worst cooks are kind of phony.

Anyway, I was bummed that Norman was booted because I thought Leo was a mess. He kept burning the hazelnuts. I understand why Sharif was sent home, but I kind of hoped that Sarah would be too, since she's annoying.

I'm pulling for Genique to win because she seems like the only contestant left who's genuinely there to learn how to cook better.

The rest I couldn't care about.

Also, I wanted to smack Leo for wearing the large frames sans lenses.

Haricot beans are different.  They are longer and thinner.  They are usually in the stores from Tksgiving to xmas.

Tyler is so dull.  Nice man but ohhhhhhhh so dull.

I knew Sharif was going home before I even watched the episode, because he was the most normal/average person on the Blue Team.  What surprised me was that he went home because of his own mistakes; I was certain they'd have to invent an excuse to get rid of him (like Tyler's under/over-seasoning setup).  Similarly, I was expecting they'd find a reason to send Kristen home, so I was caught off guard when Norman was cut.

When Sarah was cutely making sound effects for the brioche going into the custard, I wanted to shove her head in Leo's gaping face.  She even described her personality as bubbly.  It doesn't matter, anymore, anyway.  Now that my eyecandy Sharif is gone, I'm done with the show.  I'm not even going to hatewatch the rest of the season.

For Season Seven's aptly-named casting call, I hope Food Network makes an effort to hire actors that are actually convincing.  Maybe even likable.  It's a shame the producers take the easy route with this show; WCiA could be the best program in Food Network's tired lineup.

Yeah, I've seen them but they sure just look like green beans to me. Maybe my local store mislabels them?  What they look like to me is the skinniest green beans pulled out of the regular bulk beans, packaged into bags, then sold at double the price per pound with a fancier name. Although they do seem like a decent thing to give to the "worst cooks" (ha, right) since they probably cook fast.

I keep wondering if Tyler got partway through the season and was thinking "what did I get myself into?" because he seemed a little more into it early on. I'd be surprised if we see him on this show again.

Haricot verts are just young, thin green beans.  Same genus and species.  Sure, the fat older ones go into cans and frozen veg mix, but if you grow your own, the skinny fresh ones are the best.  Yes they are.) still green beans.

I guess I derailed the thread on this point: It doesn't matter one tiny bit if these were fat green beans, skinny green beans, plantains, or arugula.  If one is a "worst cook in America", just cooking a vegetable *should* be a challenge to them.  These lumps couldn't make a f'in salad a few weeks ago.  And now I have to buy that these actors can cook beans of green or spinach of two creams?  Not terribly likely.

And, honestly, this bums me out.  I learned a hell of a lot about cooking from the Food Network in the late 90s.  There was Grillin' & Chillin' (Bobby Flay before his head got too big), Too Hot Tamales (Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken), Emeril (before BAM! was a thing), and Ming Tsai and his Blue Ginger.  I learned knife skills, taste pairings, and just the idea of trying new stuff.  Now this drivel.  Give me some challenging chefs, FN!  Hell, PBS doesn't even have them any more.  Once Pepin leaves this mortal coil, I don't know where to go.  (Long live Pepin!)

I read somewhere awhile back that during the talking heads, producers like those that wear glasses to not have the lenses in because it can cause a reflection in the glass, but I'm not sure where I read that. Unless you're talking about just running around the kitchen then, to me, it is an annoying affectation.

Oh, I've read that too, but I still want to smack Leo. If anything, for the gaping mouth.

I really did want to see normal people win this time. Not these over acting actors.

Time for Leo to think of a new facial expression. Jeez.

After this weeks episode, I have a feeling Anne will win again. ;(

The photographer who took my daughter's senior pictures wanted us to take the lenses out of her glasses.  We couldn't get one of them out, so we ended up doing her pictures without her glasses.  But its weird when its obvious you're wearing frames with no lenses.

I think the reason Anne has almost every win is because she's more of a teacher than just a celebrity chef. Most of her shows aren't "look at me", you can actually learn a lot. Bobby, Tyler, Robert, and Beau, not so much.

I think she used to be a teacher, but she's gotten enamored of her ability to offer snark instead of substance.  I loved her on "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef," where she was funny and interesting, but learned to loathe her in her subsequent outings where she's just brassy and obnoxious.

There's gotta be another reason that they've run through four male chefs.  Many of Bobby's shows are all about teaching skills, and I really liked Tyler's Ultimate.  Not a Robert Irvine fan but I think he can teach basic skills.  Certainly this show would be better with more time showing instruction and less time on cutesy contestant quirks.
