Believe it or not, the term "major league baseball stadium" is copyrighted.  We wanted to have custom t-shirts made and were advised by the printer we could not use that term without a release.

I'm from Baltimore originally.  There, restaurant servers and others are well known for calling their customers "Hon."  A restaurant owner there tried to copyright that word.  Didn't go over very well, and it hurt her business so much that she gave up the effort.

In other words . . . you'd be amazed at what phrases are copyrighted.

Yep! She sure was. And I think the servers were known for having big hair. Or there was something different about their hair anyway.

I wouldn't think you could register No BS as a trademark, because it's a phrase people use.

It's like that basketball coach who trademarked "Threepeat." Even tho lots of ppl used the expression at the time, he was wily enuf to be the first to ™ it. Now everyone who uses it pays him royalties.

Yep.  Ramsay was impressed with some of the restaurant, but realized that part of the reason it wasn't succeeding was because the owner had alienated pretty much the whole city.

It seems that if you could show something was a commonly used word or express, if wouldn't be subject to a trademark.

So, ya'll need to check out Whitney's last rant on Instagram about someone fat shaming. There's a video of a dancer wearing a fat suit that another account (worldwidedance) re-posted with the caption "Me after a week without dancing." She flipped out and made it about her..of course.

We've been talking about this in the social media thread. The first post is here and then you can read all the comments after that.

Asides from the echo chamber that is facebook, is there any place on the net that is supportive of her?

I don't do twitter or instagram, but does she have followers there?
TLC used to have boards, back in the Trading Spaces days, but I don't think they exist any more.
If you google Whitney Thore discussion, you find some, and I found this with her name and "support."

I went to the link and had to laugh. That site (and the subsequent books) is overseen by a guy named Matt Stone-sometimes called Buck Flogging. He also commented in the comments section. I literally used to work with him and even ran a segment of his business for awhile. Small world!

I was speaking to a friend at church this morning about something hubby and I are doing in August.  My friend (in her 60s) said, "Well, as the kids today would say, I am SO jelly that you're doing that!!"

I bit my tongue and didn't say, "Yes . . . the kids today and a certain obese 30-something who has her own TV show."

I finally watched The Fitness Marshall video featuring Twit.  It looked like it was filmed in one shot, not in multiple takes and then cut together.  It was also close to 4 minutes long and Twit looked like she was struggling to keep up.  The other 3 had a ton more energy than her.  The part where they were squatting, she barely even went low and just did her signature butt shake.  Why does this lady have a show to begin with?  I think TLC wants to keep her morbidly obese.

Yes, Whitney is delusional about her mad dancing skills. In her defense, she IS a better dancer than Legend Diva Vegas Headliner, Mariah Carey these days! That's what they do--CARRY her G-forced-spanxed-sky-high-spiked-heeled considerably sized ass around the stage! Haha.

Mind you, Whitney doing that same Vegas choreography would be like moving a major kitchen appliance around. One would need far more back up haulers dancers. Knowing Whitney, she'd at least try to get by on the arm wave, sass and wiggle factors!

I was imagining a bunch of VERY buff guys switching off with the hand truck they would use to move her around.  They would do choreography, and she would just have to wave her arms, make faces, and point.

I realize we're off season...so my comment will probably sit unheard in the ether for a bit.

I found this forum after binging all the seasons this summer ('17) during my unemployment. I was frustrated and baffled at the level of denial and the blatantly obvious danger she's in.  A poster upthread mentioned Whitney's book, so I downloaded it. I'm not terribly far in, but her childhood/adolescence is a rough go. It has opened my eyes to how much pain this woman has endured and what possibly led her to this place. It's eye-opening and made me admire and care like I did in season one.  I recommend it if you, like me, were on board and then became disenchanted at seasons 2 and 3. TLC warps its stars and makes them difficult to root for. (Mostly by highlighting their flaws, *which I get are still flaws* and by creating no-win, yet exciting situations).

Reading her book is a reminder that a part of her message is still healthy and beneficial to girls/women.  (And yes, I realize ghost-writing and editing play a large part, but the core of the story is still hers).  Hopefully a new season will bring her a bit back to reality.

Can you share  a little bit of what made her child/adolescence a rough go?  I don't want to invest any $, no matter how little, in her book, but I would be glad to give her some sympathy if she truly deserved it.

She's also listed being called Baby Beluga while playing soccer, being the butt of a 90210 joke, and getting called "thick" by black guys as defining moments in her bullied childhood. Yet, despite being the poor bullied child, she managed to get voted Prom Princess.

Whitney's an unreliable narrator. On one hand, she needs to portray herself as a victim of internalized self-hatred brought on by society's hatred of fat people, while on the other hand she has to be fabulously happy with her life. She's neither of these things, so every time she tries to push one narrative, there are so many conflicting counterpoints that nothing she says has much validity.

I don't believe for a second that her childhood was any worse than the average person's. We all have emotional scars from growing up for one reason or another. Whitney has said countless times that she grew up with amazingly loving parents, and it's clear that she has always had everything she needs in terms of money and opportunity for growth, so from where I'm sitting, that seems like a better childhood than 99% of the rest of the world.

I'm super curious too! I read her book, but it didn't really stick with me aside from confirming my view of her as a shallow, narcissistic asshole.

*For what it's worth, it took me literally 30 seconds to find and download the book for free using my library app on my phone after reading this forum. So there definitely wasn't strenuous effort!  ;)

Without going back to quote specific examples, I'd just say it's the sheer, baseline unhappiness with her body from SUCH a young age. Her parents were loving and supportive, (aside from her mother's insecurities), yet there's this constant knowledge that she doesn't fit in from day one. More than the usual 'where do I fit in' stress of middle school.  Exploring the logistics of bulimia in sixth grade?  SIXTH GRADE. That's an 11-12 year old child. I'm sure me having a 12 year-old who is currently having her eyes opened to societal pressures is making me hypersensitive, but imagining my child having to negotiate such self-loathing and feelings of worthlessness on that level - regardless of her parents' support - breaks my heart.   (Side note: I was 6 foot, covered in freckles, red-haired and starting a new school at 12, so I'm no stranger to middle school bs).

For someone so trained to feel inferior, it's  got to do a hell of a job on their brain.  In some people that can culminate in a coping mechanism of seeming overconfident, when it's truly pain and not confidence pushing their actions.

There's zero chance my comments will sway anyone above who seems to revel in their condemnation.  But I just wanted to mention my change in perception, as it was surprising. I was SO moved by my disgust at the past two seasons that I sought out a board to vent my frustrations. And yet, my feelings changed when getting a non-TLC inspired account.  Your results may vary.

Thanks for giving those examples! There has to be more to the story than this, there is no way Whitney is telling the whole truth. A person doesn't just develop that level of body insecurity in a vacuum. My guess is that Babs and her beauty (or focus on beauty) had something to do with it. The "my parents were so supportive and amazing" doesn't jibe with "I wanted to be bulimic at age 11." The sad part to me is that Whitney still buys so strongly into JUST appreciating her body for how it looks. She has no concern whatsoever for her health beyond paying it obligatory lip service. Her entire No Body Shame movement is about people *saying nice things about how you look.* But only if you're fat. If you're thin, eff you, because you have thin privilege and deserve to be shamed, basically.

I've yo-yo'd a bit and been everywhere from borderline underweight to borderline obese. I got ZERO negative comments when I was borderline obese, and I got shit EVERY DAY when I was borderline underweight (there was actually about a 20-lb range, from the mid-130s to the mid-150s, where I was insulted at least once a week by people who demanded that I eat more, that I look "gross," etc. Whitney and her supporters seem to have this idea that thin people either don't experience that at all, or they see those things as compliments. They certainly don't have a monopoly on bad body image, but you'd never know it to ask Whit.

Agreed, ClaireWalks. It's just a shame that ANY child has to feel attacked or inferior for any reason, though I know reality is way harsh. And true, none of this happened in a vacuum. With any luck her story will progress to become more 'real!'

As someone who was bullied as a child, I get that it affects how one feels about themselves but I don't buy her crap. Body insecurity caused by bullying is not an excuse to allow oneself to turn into a maniacal, self-absorbed, mean, drama-and-attention seeking asshole.

People have choices: "I'm like this because I was bullied" is the easy way out  k37744 mentioned that she was "trained to feel inferior". I get that--so was I (socially awkward, buck-toothed weirdo). Can't count the number of times I had stuff thrown at me, was ambushed and hit with sticks and was made fun of.  When I grew a little older--and less awkward--I did act out because it gave me a feeling of power (attention getting). This is difficult to let go of.

But there's a thing called growing up: Acting out and attention seeking can't go on forever as a symptom (excuse) from having been bullied. Whitney has this choice, too, but it takes more introspection and less "hey look at me" time.

Sorry such a long post, just an opinion from a bullied kid

I'm with @TurtlePower.

I'll be the dick to piss on the pity party.

I'd wager that most girls go through that adolescence experiencing body image issues and even eating disorders (most that are probably never diagnosed).

But not all of them grow up to use those issues and/or disorders to scam their way onto a media platform that they use to mislead some people and to berate others.

To say nothing of the fact that, how many seasons in now and we've never heard anything about eating disorders, etc.  Whitney's story, directly from her own mouth in her own words in confessionals (so nothing she can blame on editing) is that her weight gain was caused solely by PCOS.  There's no reason for her to conceal an adolescent eating disorder or body-image issue, because the concept of the show doesn't depend on how she got fat, just that she can still be fabulous despite being fat.

I guess Whitney has decided that she can't really pull off that grift, so she's going to try to cash in on victimhood.

THIS. I know one other person who still in her 30s uses childhood body image issues and bullying as an excuse to be a horrible person, and she has mental health issues. It is a rare girl who is 100% thrilled with her physical appearance growing up. Whitney is actually extremely lucky to have a conventionally attractive face, since that is one thing you can't exactly just diet and exercise to change. I wonder when Whit will talk about having "pretty privilege," since that is, ya know, actually possibly a THING (it's something you're born with), not this "thin privilege" bullshit.

I grew up with an older brother who told me everyday how fat, ugly and stupid I was.  I grew up in a cliquish town where I was one of the "untouchables".  My mother started me on Weight Watchers as a young teen, due to her own issues with weight.  But I've grown up to be a well loved person, with many friends.  I have held down jobs my entire life.  Real jobs.  Accounting jobs.  I've not had to live at home or have paying renters to help me pay my mortgage.  I am overweight, but I can walk into ANY store in this country and find clothing that fits.  So having a background of being bullied is no excuse for her level of dysfunction and neediness.  Twit needs serious mental help, not a tv show.

If you want to go to the trouble, you can find a dozen or so on-line photos of Twit as a child & teen. She was normal-sized. She was a Prom Princess. All of her crap about her painful childhood is just that -- CRAP. And she gained all that weight when she decided to put on 5 times the usual Frosh Twenty Pounds.

Unfortunately, girls for decades have been taught that they are not acceptable if they are not gaunt. Twit falls into that age group. With the feminist movement & Title VII, girls have become more comfortable -- I think -- with the natural curves of their bodies. (Altho women will never be entirely free of their sense of inferiority until there are no more high heels, cheerleaders & Twiggy-size runway models.)

You need to read a description of histrionic personality disorder. That's where you will find the real Twit, not in her book.

Just to remind everyone again, her food issues started at AGE 5, when she labeled her mother as a LIAR for telling her that chocolate milk wasn't.

All she is is an addict with helicopter parents.  The second she broke free from their supervision, she packed on the freshman 100.

Yes, I agree, she has some sort of mental disorder.

As long as humans have eyes, there will always be value placed on physical beauty, however that's defined at that time in history. And if it's not physical beauty, then people will develop a sense of inferiority centered around personality characteristics that garner power and popularity. That sense of inferiority only goes away when an individual decides that comparing themselves to other people is useless. That usually comes with maturity and your own individual accomplishments that make you feel proud of yourself.

Whitney's trying to make beauty not matter in society, but that will never happen, nor is that an intrinsically noble goal. Beauty is a tool that you can use to your advantage just like intelligence, gregariousness, or whatever other characteristics have a lot of social value. Whitney's desire to make beauty not matter is because she herself has placed high value on it, and thus, the fact that she doesn't have it is deeply troubling to her. If she were still thin, she would not be advocating for beauty to not matter because that would take away some of her social value.

If Whitney really wanted to live up to the words she preaches, she would focus on becoming an actress or radio host, or whatever it is that she hopes to accomplish in this lifetime. As it is now, her career is centered around the idea that it's amazing that she manages to be happy despite not being beautiful. IMO, that sends a message that beauty is so important in life, that it's so rare that you can be happy if you don't have it that you get to be the star of a TV show if you can manage to not be miserable. Despite not having any other accomplishments that typically make someone have a fulfilling life (family, career, love, etc).

I hear what you're all saying. I'm not making excuses for her, just noticing that something has plagued her on a deeper level since childhood and led to an obvious disorder.  I see it now for what it is and feel for a mind/body that is unwell.

Yeah, so, the statement about her mom and the chocolate milk incident bugs me.

Her mom is trying to focus on the healthier, at least less sugar, white milk, and Teit calls her a liar. So spolied Twit outs mom for lying instead of being a responsible parent.

Yep, no wonder you're obese,  Twit, your fucking dad indulged you and your mom tried to buy healthy food. Ingrate.

I get that but somewhat disagree on this, though I don't feel it should have caused significant emotional "trauma" to nit-twit.

I feel like a child needs to be told the truth: "You can't have chocolate milk because it's got too much sugar in it" would have been a better(honest) answer. Nit-twit likely would  have hated that response, too, but it wouldn't have been as dumb as trying to fool a child. Children aren't as dumb as adults think.

Having said that, she still is looking for any excuse to be a victim. when most people write books about their lives they use the introspection to help them become better, not to continue to blame amd remain a victim. There's a difference between what causes a disorder and using excuses to remain in said disorder.

From what I understand, the only thing we know is that she replied to someone on FB that it was to be "soon".  I wonder if whatever she has been filming is not TLC related but rather a Whitney sponsored YouTube channel or something like that. As unlikely as this may seem, she is so narcissistic that she needs to be seen and it may be more important than being paid for it. It would funnel people to  her "clothing line" and "NBS travel business'.

Wonder if Whitney is following the news about Ralphie May.  He was 45 - a comedian who "just happened to be fat."  Cardiac arrest.  He blamed most of his weight on a low testosterone level and his thyroid.  Didn't seem to do anything to keep his weight under control as part of his treatment.

When we lived near Laughlin we'd see Ralphie whenever he came into town, about once a year. Pneumonia is scary dangerous, especially when one is not in good health.

Willing to bet Twit wouldn't be able to fight illness as easily because of her size. She can claim what she wants, but she's not healthy. She can barely move or do anything without pain or becoming exhausted. Pool workouts would help, but she spends more more time talking than swimming.

She's trying to create her own "reality" that absolves her from personal responsibility, something she once claimed to have.

When the show first started, I did have cable.  After I took out my cable, I started to buy episodes on Amazon for $1.99 per episode.  Wasted money, I know.  In the beginning, I did like Whitney.  I even read her book at the library.  I almost fell for her say-yes philosophy until I finally came to my senses and realized that yes, she was actually a phony and was lying not only to herself, but those who worship her.  I'm glad I saw the light!  HaHa
