Aiii yaaaa!!! Still too cold for me!!!!

Do you have to drive really far to get to malls or restaurants @BkWurm1 now that you're in the country?

We always have these grand plans to buy a place in the central coast and retire up there (near the beach and the profiterole store Mmmmm) but it's only got a handful of restaurants and I am the kind of person who will hike out for sushi, thai, pizza, cake, burgers, chinese etc at a certain place so I'd suffer in the Central Coast.

I'm just beyond the suburbs really.  Town (small town) is about 5-10 minutes away.  So gas, a couple restaurants, pizza places, a few fast food and the more expensive grocery store are close.  It's more like 15-20 for the mega discount grocery and 20-25 for the local mall.  But Downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul (The two biggest cities in the state) are only about 30-40 minutes away if there's no traffic.   It's very much a car driven society around here.  I think nothing of driving 40 minutes to go see a friend for an evening.  You just get used to it.  (Kind of like the weather - though I think Minnesota may be the one place in the world that is benefiting from global warming, lol)

hehe you people who can drive properly have it soooo easy =P

Someone told me they plotted their fanfic while they drove in the mornings and I was like "OMG WTH!!!!!"

When I drive it's like "Do this, and this, remember to do this, sh@@@@@@t I need to take a lane, OMG will they let me out, ah crap there's a right turn next."

There have been times driving home from work where I suddenly look up shocked where I am and realize I have ZERO memory of the last ten minutes of driving.  Autopilot can be a scary thing.  I am such a country driver though.  I can deal with stop and go on the highways but just busy congested streets and cities bug the crap out me now, lol.

Chicago is "benefiting" from global warming too. The past few winters have been mild. We never went below 0 and hardly had any big snowstorms.

While the coasts are ravaged by mudslides and mega blizzards and the south crazy ice storms.  I keep feeling guilty how nice our winters have been lately.

I know. Last year we had 60 degrees in December while my cousin was telling me it was 50 degrees in Los Angeles. I joked with her that maybe the our weather was switching and she moved out there for nothing. It of course didn't last they got warmer while we got colder. Lol

I do feel bad for the South since they are not used to ice and snow like we are.

@bijoux do you find that you're having more heat waves over the summers?  I spent a few summers in Europe years ago (only place in Croatia I've visited is Dubrovnik and it was beautiful) but it seems from the news reports you're getting more and deadly heat waves.

I get the feeling that everyone has been affected by climate change in the past few years as Mother Earth numbs her nose at climate deniers.  B.C is having the worst forest fires ever recorded.  Here we've had a lot of flooding that we never had before and our winters are too slushy to get to the beautiful parts of winter (sledding, skating and the poor ski resorts) but the people who are really suffering are those in the Caribbean and places like South East Asia.  And the Maldives, which is made up of more than 1,000 islands that are gradually being covered by water as the sea levels rise.  Places that don't use much greenhouse energy and don't have any power to stop the change.  My first world guilt is working overtime.

My friend's really great at this. Except for the part where she refuses to let me pay her normal fee or anything near it, which I find frustrating. I didn't ask her to do it because I thought she'd charge me next to nothing. I asked her because I believed she'd do a great job. Plus, she spent time on that she could have spent doing something else.

Does she know  your mother?  Maybe she wanted to have a part of it (lowered fee) to do something nice for her. Or for you, her friend.

It's a gorgeous cake.

No, they met for the first time two days ago. If they knew each other, I'd have no problem with it and consider the reduced price to be her gift. This way it was unneccessary and the opposite of what I said when I ordered the cake, i.e. no friends discount. But I'll stop harping about it and find her a thank-you-present.

Going back to the weather for a minute, I'm also in Vancouver which, as long as you don't have a problem not seeing the sun for a few weeks at a time, is very pleasant without many extremes.  I did spend half my life in Montreal and while I would never want to move back and deal with snow for 5 months a year, I do miss the occasional snow storm and having your nose hairs freeze when it's -20 C.

After mentioning Worldcon on another thread, I realized that I completely forgot to add a very belated thank you to whoever on this forum recommended that I try Ugg boots at the next con to save my feet. THANK YOU - that was a great idea.

Does anyone keep up with GOT and not ship Jon and Dany? Cause I don't get them at all.

I enjoy GoT but man that Jon/Dany is messed up. And I don't see the chem either. But then again Kit doesn't look like he has chem with women, not even with the wildling who became his RL girlfriend.

Jon is the definition of failing up to me and Rhaegar and Lyanna were both terrible and I don't have the words to describe how much I don't care that Jon is their legitimate child. Like I think I would rather know BS's backstory.

RIP Viserion ?

ETA: I don't get them either.

Sabrina-Centric Riverdale Spinoff in Development at The CW

Quote

The CW is developing a one-hour Riverdale spinoff titled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, TVLine has learned. The project, being likened to Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist in its tonality, “reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft. … This adaptation finds Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit.”

Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will pen the script, with Lee Toland Krieger on board to direct. Both will executive-produce, alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater.

I didn't realize that Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a comic that started back in the 60s.  I've only ever thought of it as the TV series with Melissa Joan Hart.

I don't know much about ratings, but my 13 year old daughter and all of her friends are obsessed with Riverdale.  I read the comics growing up (as did my daughter) so it's fun to see this all come to light.  I'm really interested in the darker version of Sabrina.

Just finished the Hitman's Bodyguard. LOVED it!

I love SLJ in these kinds of roles and he had such great chemistry with Ryan Reynolds! Good oddball bromance!

I really like the lady who played Agent Roussel and noticed she is cast as Elektra. Is she any good as Elektra?

I haven't seen Daredevil S2 but she's also in The Defenders. She was ok in that but the whole series had some issues overall.

The crash is the latest in a string of safety-related incidents that highlight what many claim are unsafe working conditions on Hollywood productions. Stunt professionals and others in the industry have been clamoring for improvements to their working conditions, citing long working hours, stringent transportation requirements and early start times as contributors to an unsafe working environment. Apa was in the middle of a 45-minute commute back to his hotel after 16 hours of shooting when he fell asleep at the wheel, sources say.

Several safety-related issues have made headlines recently. In July, 33-year-old veteran stuntman John Bernecker fell 22 feet to his death on the set of The Walking Dead, falling off a balcony during a rehearsal. Less than a month later, professional motorcycle racer S.J Harris was involved in a fatal crash during filming for Deadpool 2, which was filming in Vancouver. Harris' death is still being investigated. Stunt professionals familiar with the details of the crash have said her death was a preventable tragedy, and that the movie's producers placed undue pressure on the stunt coordinators to use Harris.

Many Riverdale castmembers are friends as well as colleagues, which may have contributed to an increased sense of unease and anger among them around the crash this week, and the response to it. "They're working these kids from morning until night," says one person familiar with the production and the circumstances of the accident. "Someone’s going to die."

According to a statement from Warner Bros. on Thursday, the studio refutes any claim that Apa worked a 16-hour work day and that it could have caused his accident.

I thought that unsafe working conditions have been resolved decades ago.

The crash has ignited a firestorm of protest on the Riverdale set, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. The show routinely requires shoots that last until the early morning hours, and the cast and crew are not provided transportation to and from the set. Actor Cole Sprouse, who co-stars as Archie's pal Jughead and is one of Apa's close friends, had apparently planned to be in the car as well that night but changed plans at the last minute. Sprouse, a leader of sorts of the actors on the show, has asked that the Greg Berlanti-produced series provide transportation to castmembers working late hours.

It's strange to realize Sprouse is pretty much a veteran actor.

Later in the article, the CW reps say the actors only have to ask and they get them a ride if they are tired but that's a tough age to expect good judgment.  They should just make it rule on long days (assuming the driver hasn't also had the same long day.)

He was fine.  But what if he had totalled another car with passengers instead of a light pole?

Do they count the time spent in hair and makeup as part of the work day or just the time spent on set?  Even counting that, 14.5 hour day, 1.5 hours driving, an hour at home in the morning getting ready = 17 hours.

This.  Few people will admit they're too tired to safely drive home, especially a 23 year old male.  The company should take the decision out of his hands and put maximums to how long an actor can work  before he has to be driven home.

Or what if Cole had been in the passenger seat like originally planned when Apa totaled that side of the car?

This baffles me. J2 have had a body guard and driver since s2 of their show. Only recently did I see JP drive his own car off the set and that was because he left early when he found out one of his dogs died. I legit thought it was more or less a thing for lead actors in a show especially the CW. Huh. You learn something new everyday

More on the Riverdale accident:

SAG-AFTRA Sending Team To ‘Riverdale’ Set After K.J. Apa Crash

Quote

SAG-AFTRA will be sending up a team to the Vancouver set of the CW/Warner Bros.’ television production of Riverdale after one of the union’s 20 year-old stars — K.J. Apa — fell asleep at the wheel last week and crashed his automobile after he worked what Warner Bros. TV said was a 14.2-hour work day.

“This is an extremely troubling situation and we are deeply concerned about the safety of performers on the Riverdale set,” said SAG-AFTRA in a statement. “We are sending a team to Vancouver to review the circumstances surrounding safety issues affecting performers on this production.”

If nothing else, I hope the attention to the matter would underline to the actors not to take fatigue so lightly in the future.  From experience I can say driving ten or twenty minutes when you are tired is a radically different experience than trying to make it 45 minutes. I've been the person on the highway literally slapping themselves to stay awake.  Scary stuff.

I'm used to having this discussion about doctors, many of whom believe that they are so special that they can do without sleep because no one else can do what they do as well as they can.  (When it's about doing a tricky procedure, first I ask the doctor how long he or she has been on call. My cousin once had a doctor who had been up for 36 hours try to remove a fish hook from his leg.  It did not go well.)

I don't think that a 20 year old young man is not the best person to decide if he's aware enough for a 45 minute drive home in the dark.

Syfy had the uninterrupted by commercials Battlestar Galactica three hour movie on tonight.  The show ended, meh, but wow, that was a great way to start.

It was a great way to start.  I think I dropped out by the middle of the first season (or maybe it was second - I'd have to go back and look) but it had an awesome start.

Is it crazy that I keep singing this song to my geriatric dog while trying to write fanfic?

What would I give
To live where you are?
What would I pay
To stay here beside you?
What would I do to see you
Smiling at me?

Where would we walk?
Where would we run?
If we could stay all day in the sun?
Just you and me
And I could be
Part of your world

It's the reprise version of "Part of Your World" from the Little Mermaid. It's soooo us! I'm in love with it!
