Food Network airs a new five-episode series Cupcake Championship, premiering Monday, July 1st at 9PM

Quote

Hosted by Kardea Brown, each episode features four world-class cupcake experts battling to achieve new levels of edible ingenuity in two rounds of competition.  Judge Maureen McCormick is joined by a revolving panel of guest judges, including Nacho Aguirre, Lerome Campbell, Amirah Kassem, Stella Parks, Gesine Prado and Joshua John Russell.

Each episode kicks off with the Designer Challenge where the four contestants must create cupcakes to celebrate an event or theme.
The three remaining contestants then proceed to the Imagination Challenge, an amped-up battle to create a three-dimensional cupcake tableau with bigger displays and multiple flavor components.

In the premiere episode, the cupcake makers are challenged to make succulent plants out of cupcakes.  The three remaining competitors take on the delicacies of beautiful flower bouquet designs.  Additional challenges during the season have the competitors making edible snow globes, incredibly detailed pet designs, savory ‘food imposters’, mythical beings and even an entire planet made out of cupcakes!

The finale of 'Worst Cooks: Celebrity" (1.29 milion viewers/0.33 demo) was down 4% in viewers and a whopping 20% demo from last season's finale (1.34M/0.41 on 5/20/2018). The average of the entire season (1.22M/0.33) was down 8% in viewers and 16% demo from the prior celeb season (1.32M/0.39). At least, ratings wise, Tonya Harding was no LaToya Jackson.

Meanwhile, 'Bite Club,' which wasn't any reason to bring it back, continued to be the lowest rated original on the network and, as of yesterday, it was moved again, this time to Tuesdays at 2:00PM during the rest of June, re-running episodes from the first season. At least 6 original episodes from the 2nd season remain unaired.

Season 10's premiere of 'Great Food Truck Race' registered 1.10 million viewers/0.33 demo, up 8 percent in viewers and 14% demo from Season 9's premiere (1.02M/0.29 on 7/26/2018), which was on a Thursday night. On the current Sunday 9PM slot 'GFTR' airs now, last season's 'Food Network Star' premiered a year ago (6/10/2018) to 1.30 million viewers/0.30 demo, so year to year, 'GFTR' was up 10% in demo but down 15% in viewers from 'FNS' on the timeslot.

Meanwhile, the premiere of 'Wedding Cake Championship' (which didn't receive any promotion whatsover compared to the endless promos last year) was watched by 804,000 viewers/0.21 demo, down 30% in viewers and 27% demo from season 1's premiere (1.14 million/0.29 on 6/25/2018).

I actually like Bite Club and wonder what it is that isn't engaging viewers.  It has accomplished chefs just cooking with no silly twists, no interpersonal nastiness, no villains and so on.  Tyler seems to be popular on other shows and the guest judges are from the food world, not grade D celebrities.  Why aren't people watching?

Food Network's summer programming: more baking, more game shows, some road shows, 'Good Eats' revival and Flay's back on 'Worst Cooks'...

FOOD NETWORK SIZZLES WITH NEW SERIES, NEW SPECIALS, NEW EPISODES ALL SUMMER LONG

Network’s 2019 Summer Slate Boasts 20% More Premieres in Prime vs. YAGO

NEW YORK – June 24, 2019 – Food Network has a robust summer slate of premieres planned in 2019 with exciting new series, new specials and new episodes of returning favorites keeping fans entertained all season. The schedule, which boasts 20% more premieres in prime than last year, includes 9 new series, 5 new specials, and premiere episodes for over 20 returning and recurring series, ranging from high-stakes competitions, transformative stories of redemption, extraordinary works of edible art, unique culinary points of view, and even a taste of Christmas with a special programming block in July.

“Summertime and food go hand-in-hand, from beachside barbecues to all day get-togethers with friends and family, food and food content are an intrinsic part of this time of year and Food Network has been priming our programming pipeline to supersize delivery of new episodes for fans to keep them entertained all season,” said Courtney White, President, Food Network. “From action-packed competitions that will have viewers on the edge of their seats, to jaw-dropping baked creations, and exceptional culinary voices, there is something for everyone to dive into this summer.”

Sweets and treats abound on Food Network this July including new special, 'World Cake Championship', premiering Monday, July 1st at 9pm in which five sugar artists compete in the World Cup of cake design, the Grand National Cake Competition, with the best of the best vying for over $30,000 in cash, followed by 'Cupcake Championship', launching Monday, July 1st at 10pm and featuring world-class cupcake artists creating mind-blowing edible creations. On Monday, July 8th, viewers can celebrate an extra dose of Christmas in July with a special holiday-themed programming block including all-new special, 'Holiday Baking Championship: Christmas in July' at 9pm and a special Christmas in July-themed episode of 'Cupcake Championship' at 10pm. Dessert is served (at your own risk) on Monday, July 15th at 9pm as Lorraine Pascale and Jason Smith lead a fresh batch of recruits on 'Worst Bakers in America'. Then, 'Kids Baking Championship' returns with a double-premiere on Monday, August 12th at 8pm and 9pm as a new field of talented bakers pull out all the stops to show hosts Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman they deserve the title of Kids Baking Champion.

Robert Irvine is back with a new season of 'Restaurant: Impossible' beginning Saturday, July 20th at 9pm as he takes on the challenge of turning around a failing restaurant in just two days, followed at 10pm by 'Restaurant Impossible: Revisited', as Robert surprises some of the most memorable places and people with a visit to see what changes have stood the test of time.

Iron Chef Bobby Flay is a master of the grill and he is getting fired up with all-new 'BBQ Brawl: Flay V. Symon', launching Thursday, August 1st at 9pm and featuring Bobby and best friend, fellow Iron Chef Michael Symon, going head-to-head as they coach eight of the country’s most respected BBQ challengers in a bid for the ultimate bragging rights.  On Sunday, August 4th at 9pm, Bobby keeps the pressure on as he competes against Anne Burrell in a new season of 'Worst Cooks in America' as they each mentor a team of hapless cooks in a bid to take them from kitchen zeroes to kitchen heroes.  On Thursday, August 22nd at 10:30pm, Bobby then hits the road with daughter Sophie in 'The Flay List', as he visits the culinary spots he has frequented for years to share classic dishes, with Sophie introducing her dad to her latest discoveries.

Also in August, viewers can look forward to new series including the Alex Guarnaschelli-hosted 'Supermarket Stakeout' premiering on Tuesday, August 13th at 10pm, the ultimate family food competition with family pride on the line, 'Family Restaurant Rivals', hosted by Valerie Bertinelli on Monday, August 19th at 10pm, and the much-anticipated return of 'Good Eats' arrives Sunday, August 25th at 10pm as resident food-historian, Alton Brown, uses his signature wit and smart spin on food in a new season of this fan-favorite series.

Food Network closes-out August with the strategic gameplay of 'Budget Battle' with Casey Webb on Wednesday, August 28th at 10pm. Plus, all summer fans can catch premieres of 'Beat Bobby Flay', 'Chopped', 'Chopped Junior', 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives', 'Guy’s Grocery Games' and 'Triple D Nation'.

On Sunday, July 28th at 11:30am, Kardea Brown whips up delicious recipes perfect for summer from her kitchen in Charleston, South Carolina, and shares the family events and traditions close to her heart in brand-new series, 'Delicious Miss Brown'.  Also in daytime, fans can catch premieres of 'Giada in Italy', 'Guy’s Ranch Kitchen', 'The Kitchen', 'The Pioneer Woman', 'Trisha’s Southern Kitchen' and 'Valerie’s Home Cooking'.

Food Network is all new this summer with something for everyone and a delicious seasonal menu that is not to be missed!

Ugh. More Worst Cooks?   This is as bad as Hell's Kitchen with presenting the same contrived bullshit 4 times a year (slipping in "celebrities" does not count as different).

Christmas in July?  Please, no. Do they think they're the effing Hallmark Channel now?

Casey Webb is hosting a show?  Was some clamoring for this?  I thought Food Network already had the greasy schlub demographic covered.

So is Family Restaurant Rivals the announced second season of Valerie's show just with all the contestants being restauranteurs or a totally different show?

Was Symom friends with Bobby before he won Iron Chef?  I never hear anybody complain about favoritism with him.

They sure got new episodes of Restaurant Impossible together quick after those last 4 did well.

Someday should tell 20 percent Network that sometimes less is more.

World Cake Championship was amazing. All those cakes were beyond incredible but I agree with the winning entry. And anytime Kerry Vincent is on my screen, I’m happy. I didn’t request a new forum since it’s a one-time show. But if the mods want me to, I will request one.

Not many breakouts on Food Network for the second quarter. Other than 'Duff Takes the Cake' which had so-so ratings out of 'Spring Baking Championship's lead, the network's new shows ('Bake You Rich' and 'Family Food Showdown') flopped. FN's brightest spots continue to be the baking/realities on Sunday-Monday 9PM and the weekend daytime lineup like 'The Kitchen', which distanced itself in ratings from 'Pioneer Woman'.

There were huge drops in audience for the primetime long running shows like 'GGG', 'DDD', 'Chopped' and 'Beat Bobby Flay' plus, the idea of airing sophomore seasons of other shows like 'Bite Club' and 'Wedding Cake Championship' failed miserably.

The biggest successes for the quarter were the revival of two old time favorites: 'Restaurant Impossible' and '30 Minute Meals', which was sampled by more than 13 million viewers for its 30 original episodes.

Monday's premiere of Kardea Brown's 'Cupcake Champioship' disappointed with 779,000 viewers and 0.18 demo, on par with what the 2nd season of 'Wedding Cake Championship' did on the 10PM timeslot and that flopped badly. If the network wanted diversity for 'Cupcake', Sunny Anderson or Eddie Jackson would have been great to host it but, there are too many baking shows and specials that viewers can chew and other than 'Buddy vs Duff', 'Best Baker' 'Halloween Wars', 'Christmas Cookie Challenge' and the baking championships, every other baking show/special hasn't performed very well.

The premiere of 'Chopped Junior' was down 14% in viewers and a big 26% in demo from its last premiere (878,000/0.27 on 5/30/2017). Apparently, this was a show that wasn't a good idea to bring it back, especially with the 'Chopped' concept being a bit tired. Other than 'Kids Baking Championship', kids cooking shows haven't done good lately.

New road show 'Carnivorous' premiered to an average of 605,000 viewers/0.13 demo, losing almost 100,000 viewers between episodes. If FN launched this show on Sunday afternoons instead of primetime and will plan to end it in a month per 2 episodes back to back a week, even the network knows it wouldn't had a chance, especially since a 'DDD' rerun marathon following 'Carnivorous' averaged close to a million viewers. FN has tried to create the next 'DDD' for years now, with soooo many shows and almost all of them didn't work and this is another one added to the list.

On premiere news, season 2 of 'Worst Bakers in America' had the lowest premiere ratings of any returning show but 'Bite Club' by a small margin: 575,000 viewers/0.14 demo on Monday night, 44% down in viewers and 55% down in demo from season 1's premiere on Sunday, October 2nd, 2016 at 10PM with Duff Goldman as co-host (1.03 million viewers/0.31 demo). We'll see how it evolves but, Jason Smith isn't a host, he's a judge.

'Restaurant Impossible' started its new season leading all prime time shows, other than the Sunday night game show. It was down 9% in viewers and 19% demo from last season's finale on May 11th, but it was up 3% in viewers and down 12% demo from last season's premiere (April 21st). It's 'Revisited' show also got better numbers than most prime time shows.

Although 'Carnivorous' continues to have low ratings, even for daytime original shows, it stabilized a bit, losing only 4 percent in viewers between half hours.

In programming changes, 'Worst Bakers in America' and 'Cupcake Championship' have been moved from Monday nights to Saturday afternoons between 1-3PM, due to low ratings. 'Worst Bakers' lasted just one episode in prime time. Last night, the network aired 'DDD' reruns, which improved the ratings by 25 percent.

Sunday night's season finale of 'Great Food Truck Race' (1.12 million viewers/0.28 demo) was up 3 percent in viewers and down 17% in demo from S9's finale (1.09M/0.34 demo on Thursday, August 30th, 2018). Although it doesn't have the ratings other game shows like 'FNS', 'Worst Cooks' or the baking championships have, 'GFTR' continues to be a reliable show for the network.

'Restaurant Impossible' and 'RI: Revisited' continue to top the non-Sunday prime time shows on the network and, in daytime, 'Worst Bakers' continues to struggle in their new timeslot, getting even less viewers than fellow dud 'Carnivorous', whose first half hour also had more total and demo viewers than Kardea Brown's 'Cupcake Championship'. Her cooking show, 'Delicious Miss Brown' debuted Sunday morning to so-so ratings compared to other daytime cooking shows.

The new season of 'Worst Cooks' premiered to 1.36 million viewers and 0.36 demo rating Sunday night, up 6 percent in viewers and 4% demo from August 2018's premiere (1.29M, 0.35 on 8/11/18).

The 'Buddy vs Duff' inspired 'Flay vs Symon' had barely a million viewers on Thursday night, which was about the same numbers 'Great Food Truck Race' was doing before moving to Sundays and way up from the terrible ratings that flop 'Bite Club' did on the same Thursday 9PM timeslot.

The second pilot of 'Kitchen Takeover' did about the same numbers the first pilot made last September, one of the lowest FN pilots of last year. Like the network has done with countless 'DDD' inspired programs that don't work, every makeover show FN has done, other than 'R,I.' flops. It's hard to sucessfully clone the originals.

Another week on which daytime shows like 'Carnivorous', 'Delicious Miss Brown', 'Cupcake Championship' and 'Worst Bakers' continue to flounder in the ratings.

Last night's premiere of 'Kids Baking Championship' (916,000 viewers/0.20 demo) dropped 10% in viewers and a huge 26% in demo from August 2018's premiere (1.03 million/0.27 demo on 8/6/18).

This past Saturday's episode was the lowest rated for 'Restaurant Impossible' since coming back on April and the first time it reached less than a million viewers. Since returning with a new batch of originals four weeks ago, the show has been dropping audience just a bit each week, but it had the biggest drop on Saturday.

On the other side, daytime's 'Delicious Miss Brown' reached its highest rated episode so far. It helped that an hour before, the network re-ran the 'Pioneer Woman: Best of Comfort Classics' episode, which always gets a big audience.

It was no surprise that due to its low rating last week, following 'R.I.: Revisited', 'Kitchen Takeover' was moved to an afternoon timeslot, for its remaining three episodes.

We'll see how all these shows do this week.

You're right I was thinking of the DIY Network going away when I typed what I did about Cooking Channel. I could see Cooking Channel going away at some point though since it doesn't get anywhere near as much attention as FN does when it comes to new programming and such.

Did anyone else see Supermarket Stakeout last night?   It's like Guy's Grocery Games outdoors with Alex G as the host.   Typical format, 4 chefs, 3 rounds with  an elimination each round.   They in outdoor kitchens in a parking lot, given $500 and can only cook with what they can buy off people walking out of the store without looking in the bags at what they're buying.   I didn't make it through the whole thing.   It's so contrived even for Food Network.   The customers act like they're being ambushed, but they have to know this is going on.   They see 4 big ass kitchens in the parking lot when they go in and have to sign releases so it's hardly a surprise.  The bags are all open so you can at least see what's in the top.  And what are you supposed to do if the customer was just stocking up on condoms and beer.  I know they want to graft the Chopped format onto yet another show but they need to go back to the drawing board on this one.

Although it went up from last week, this past Saturday's episode of 'Restaurant Impossible' also didn't reach a million viewers. Nonetheless, it remains one of the top prime time shows on the network, as is 'R.I.: Revisited'.

The numbers for the premiere of 'Supermarket Stakeout' weren't good and FN knew it: all day yesterday they promoted the show on screen, something they never do with shows they didn't promote prior to their launch. It paid off, at least last night, as the second episode scored 819,000 viewers/0.26 demo. Apparently, FN has a lot invested in Alex Guarnaschelli and this show in particular. The last two new originals for the month come out this week: 'The Flay List' and 'Good Eats: The Return', which haven't been promoted by the network at all.

'Worst Bakers' second season ended with an average of 515,000 viewers and 0.10 demo, down 51 and 69 percent respectively from the first season.

HALLOWEEN BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP returns on Monday, September 23rd at 9pm ET/PT.  Judges Carla Hall, Katie Lee and Zac Young, join host John Henson to test the skills of eight talented bakers.

Duff Goldman hosts a new series HALLOWEEN CAKE-OFF on Monday, September 23rd at 10pm ET/PT.  Four professional bakers are tested to find out who is best at making the creepiest and most innovative Halloween cakes for judges Duff Goldman, Dan Langan and Waylynn Lucas.

ROAD TO HALLOWEEN WARS returns on Sunday, September 29th at 8pm ET/PT.

New season of HALLOWEEN WARS premieres September 29th at 9pm ET/PT with host Jonathan Bennett.  Judges Shinmin Li and horror film special effects master Todd Tucker are joined by a rotating panel of celebrity judges including Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead), Caleb McLaughlin (Stranger Things), Jackson Rathbone (Twilight saga), Harley Quinn Smith (Tusk), and Elvira: Mistress of the Dark!.

A new special, OUTRAGEOUS PUMPKINS hosted by Casey Webb, premieres Sunday, September 29th at 10pm ET/PT.

HAUNTED GINGERBREAD SHOWDOWN hosted by Clinton Kelly premieres Sunday, October 6th at 10pm ET/PT with judges Jamika Pessoa, Gesine Prado and Jason Smith.

IMO choosing Katie Lee as the third judge for the Halloween Baking Championship is just all kinds of wrong.

Katie Lee?   The Halloween Baking Championship has had the most cast turnover of any of the 3 seasonal shows and and it's picks are always the worst.

Casey Webb?  Please stop trying to make him a thing, Food Network.  I'm not interested in watching some schlub who looks like he's never encountered a bottle of shampoo.

Now they're going to put Clinton in the Gingerbread show?   I know Aunt Sandy isn't widely liked, but her over-the-top love of Halloween makes a perfect fit for these Halloween shows.  I'd rather have her back.

I don’t care who is judging or hosting any of the shows as long as the puppet guy is gone, and it appears he is. I flove any and all Halloween and holiday shows, so bring it on! I’m giddy that it’s around the corner! Squeeee! Thank you, @RealityCheck, for the update!

My beef with FN is that Ron Ben-Israel seems to be persona non grata, which I don’t understand. His social media suggests that he would be open to returning. He is the best and most qualified judge they’ve ever had for any show.

I like that Kitchen Takeover show even if it basically does what Restaurant Impossible does. The vibe is a bit different with a host other then Irvine and I like that the cities on Kitchen Takeover are all southern which I just noticed have all been in Georgia specifically. I was hoping it would go on past the few episodes they already had in the can so they could go to other southern states. I doubt that will happen though.

I tried watching Supermarket Stakeout when it was on earlier today....

Last night's (8/26) episode of 'Kids Baking Championship' did 1.17 million viewers/0.27 demo. Half into the season, the show is down 9 percent in viewers and a huge 21% in demo, compared to this point last year's summer season. These baking game shows tend to go up as the season ends, so we'll see how it continues to perform.

There were some series premieres and finales last week, being the most anticipated the reboot of 'Good Eats' with not very good numbers: an average of 684,000 viewers/0.23 demo, down 44% in viewers and 23% demo from its 'Worst Cooks' lead-in. A little bit more concerning is that 'Good Eats' lost 17% in viewers and 13% demo between episodes. Don't think FN is very happy with those numbers.

'BBQ Brawl: Flay vs Symon' ended with an average of 948,000 viewers/0.22 demo. Although it was down 10% in viewers from what 'Great Food Truck Race' did on Thursday nights, it was up more than 40% in viewers from what 'Bite Club' did. Although it didn't do 'Buddy vs Duff' numbers, it was successful for the timeslot. 'The Flay List' premiered to so-so numbers, but way better than other premieres, like 'Family Restaurant Rivals' which is averaging 530,000 viewers on Monday at 10PM, a total flop. Finally, as FN started to promote 'Supermarket Stakeout', it appears that the show has picked up some steam and its second episode got better numbers.

The season finale of 'Restaurant Impossible' was watched by almost a million viewers. For this year's entire 12 episode season, it averaged 1.04 million viewers/0.22 demo, up 10 percent in viewers but down 18% in demo from the 'Ambush' season of 2016. 'RI', along with 'Revisited' got more viewers than any other prime time show, other than the Sunday 9PM game show or the baking championships.

Although FN continues to put its eggs on 'Supermarket Stakeout's basket, which is getting better demos than other prime time shows, gets just close to 700,000 viewers, not hit show numbers at all. A fellow new show that's faring worst (along with 'Good Eats: The Return') and FN is starting to promote a bit more on-air is 'The Flay List'. Another new program that started this quarter just got renewed for a second season: 'Delicious Miss Brown', which averaged 785,000 viewers for its 6 episode first season, but got 0.14 demo, the worst numbers of all daytime originals, will return in early 2020.

Finally, FN needs to be more careful in terms of how much product it is green lighting and putting on the air, as many of these pilots and shows that are shown on weekend afternoons aren't getting good numbers whatsoever.

This past Monday 9/17 finale of 'Kids Baking Championship' had 982,000 viewers and 0.24 demo, down 30 and 33 percent in viewers and demo respectively from last summer's finale (1.40 million viewers/0.36 demo on 9/17/2018). As we see low ratings for last week's ratings next to last episode, this season's average was 995,000 viewers/0.22 demo, down 17% in viewers and 26% in demo from last summer. This is the first season of 'Kids Baking Championship' that doesn't reach a million viewers.

FN's mistake of scheduling 'Good Eats: The Return' before 'Worst Cooks' cost the latter to lose 20% in viewers from the week before and then, they aired a new 'GGG' at 10. If they wanted to boost 'Good Eats' ratings, why didn't FN sandwiched 'Good Eats' between the new 'GGG' and 'Worst Cooks'?. In any case, 'Good Eats: The Return' hasn't worked and is one of FN's many failures of this year. Times are different and people perceive FN as having cooking shows in the morning and game shows/DDD in the evening.
