If last week 'Halloween Wars' premiered to almost 2 million viewers, this week's news is the big drop it had on its second episode, down 35 percent in viewers and 42% in demo from the premiere. Compared to the 2nd episode last season (1.45 million/0.46 on 10/8/2017), it was down 12 and 17% respectively.

Sandra Lee's 'Haunted Gingerbread Showdown' had a nice, not spooktacular debut with barely a million viewers, way better than the other prime time game shows, most of them with low ratings last week (with the exception of 'GGG'), like 'Chopped' and 'Beat Bobby Flay' which had for 6 weeks the terrible 'Bite Club' lead. Sans major retooling, 'Bite Club' probably bit the dust and won't come back, as well as 'Big Food Truck Tip'.

In daytime, Katie Pix' second pilot 'Simply Delicious' lost almost 40% of its lead from 'The Kitchen' and got even worse ratings than 'Cajun Aces' and her own first pilot 'Naughty and Delicious' (725,000 viewers on July 22nd).

On detailed demographics for the week, 'Guy's Grocery Games' is the non-seasonal best rated regular prime time show, scoring well across the board on every demo but adults over 50. 'DDD' also did well but 'Chopped: Champions' and 'Beat Bobby Flay' scored the lowest of the prime time shows on most demos.

On daytime, 'The Kitchen' did better than 'Pioneer Woman' on the advertising demos (18-49 & 25-54). 'PW' skews more to male and adults over 50 viewers, while 'The Kitchen' skews more to female viewers and is second to 'PW' with people over 50.

The Trisha ratings effect caused 'Halloween Baking Championship' to have its lowest episode of the season this past Monday. Her prime time Halloween special flopped with 700,000 viewers at 8PM. On Saturdays, Trisha's regular show's ratings go down a lot from its 'Pioneer Woman' lead and this affects 'The Kitchen' as it tries to recover some of the lost audience. Starting Sat. November 10th, Trisha's new season is moving to 12:00PM right after 'The Kitchen' and before the new season of 'Guy's Ranch Kitchen' while PW reruns take over the 10:30AM timeslot.

Speaking of flops, Eddie Jackson had another one as his pilot called 'Food Truck Fan Fight' bomber with just over 400,000 viewers, as FN lost half the audience from 'Beat Bobby Flay' which is recovering from the terrible ratings it had for a while thanks to its 'Bite Club' lead.

Just noticed the same thing! I’d even go for the ubiquitous reruns of the Halloween competitions.

At least Fox FX is showing reruns of all the Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror episodes.

'Ultimate Thanksgiving Championship' premiered to 1.19 million viewers and 0.39 demo on Sunday night. While those aren't the numbers other Sunday night game shows like 'Worst Cooks', 'Food Network Star' or 'Halloween Wars' get, its a huge improvement from the 'Guy's Big Project' disaster, which debuted on Nov. 5th, 2017 to 769,000 viewers and 0.18 demo.

Although it's a huge improvement over what FN aired this time last year ('Guy's Big Project'), pending how 'Holiday Gingerbread Showdown' performs, it's FN's lowest rated Sunday 9PM game show of the year.

Looks like we have officially reached Guy Overload.  With GGG's taking over Wednesday afternoons and evenings, DDD running for 14 hours on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning (and also popping up on various weekends), plus his cooking shows and other special series, I don't think it's too much of a wonder that his ratings are slipping.  And I think it's pretty obvious he's trying to get his eldest son into the FN fold, perhaps with a show of his own eventually.

They could have rerun the Barefoot Thanksgiving special a few more times. I only saw it on the schedule the initial airing. 

FN does this a LOT. First Emeril, then Rachael Ray, got run to death. Bobby and Mario somehow escaped despite having multiple shows.

'Holiday Gingerbread Showdown' premiered this past Sunday to 1.29 million viewers and 0.36 demo rating, 9 percent more in viewers but 8 percent less in demo than 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge'. Will see how 'Gingerbread' performs this week, as it won't have the big lead it had from the pilot (guaranteed to be a series next year) of 'Holiday Wars'. 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge' had a weaker 'GGG' lead before its premiere. Speaking of 'GGG', neither 'HGS' or 'UTC' had the lowest rated Sunday 9P game show premiere this year: for the second year in a row Guy Fieri has that distinction: last year with 'Big Project' and in 2018 with 'GGG's DDD Tournament'.

Giada De Laurentiis kicks off the New Year with the competition series Winner Cake All premiering Monday, January 7th at 10pm ET/PT.

Each episode features four of the best cake-baking tandems from around the country  to create epic cakes for their clientele’s unforgettable celebrations.  Through 13 episodes the teams are put to the test over two rounds of baking, with a rotating panel of guest judges helping the clients determine which team captures their dream look and taste to prevail with the $10,000 grand prize.  Each episode features the baking teams competing in two rounds, including a Decoration Challenge where each team must create a unique cake topper based on the client’s theme.  In the second round, the three remaining teams take part in the Cake Challenge, where Giada introduces the client’s request for a sculpted cake for their celebration.

'Holiday Baking Championship' remains by far FN's top show . At the moment, its also the network's top show for the year in viewers, with 'Halloween Wars' second ('Wars' is #1 in demo with 'HBC' second).

In its second week, 'Holiday Gingerbread Showdown' only drop 10 percent in viewers and 9 in demo over its premiere, which is good considering its lead was weaker than its debut.

Over daytime, is apparent that the celebrity cooking show mania is coming down, as 'Martina's Table' hasn't clicked with viewers and its the weakest spot on the Sunday lineup as Trisha is on Saturdays. The original plan was to move Trisha to Sundays and pair it with Martina, which is a more compatible show, but that didn't happen.

Its worrying that the long running shows from FN's top stars (Guy, Bobby, Ina, Giada, etc.) aren't getting the ratings they once had, and 'Chopped' is getting air thanks to Martha Stewart.

Yes, it should be worrisome that FN's long-established stars are losing ratings, particularly since they're having trouble launching new shows with new hosts that actually have staying power.  Seems to me they're getting into a situation where they have to keep going with some of the long-running shows because what is there waiting in the wings to replace them?

I think, though, that besides the glut of programs featuring the same people, and the fact that some of the new episodes that are getting lower ratings are after hours upon hours of reruns (not everyone is going to bother to see if the 9 p.m. show on a given night is new), there's also the holiday factor and the cord-cutting factor as people cut their cable and move to other (and often cheaper) ways to watch TV.  I'm sure there are ways to count those viewers, but they're just not as readily available as the Nielsen ratings.

I would also think that the ratings improve a bit if you add the 50+ demos.  Of course 18-49 is the bread and butter for advertisers.  But still, the trends are not good for FN.

The finale of 'Holiday Baking Championship' got 1.96 million viewers and 0.49 demo on Monday night. It was the second highest rated show on FN this year ('Halloween Wars' premiere got 1.98 million) and easily made 'HBC' the highest rated show of the network for the year in viewers, surpassing 'Food Network Star'. It came second on the demo for the year behind 'Wars' (which also passed 'FNS').

This past week, 'Holiday Gingerbread Showdown' ended and finished above 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge' 1.22 million viewers/0.35 to 1.12m/0.33 to Giada's show, which was the second to last Sunday 9P game show of the year. The least watched was 'GGG's DDD Tournament' back in March.

Over at daytime, 'Martina's Table', about to end its trial season on 12/30, continues to be the weakest part of the lineup and, as other shows with likeable celebrities like Patricia Heaton, her likeability couldn't translate to the screen on a cooking/lifestyle show.

In a year of many disappointments for Food Network (Bite Club, Big Food Truck Tip, Baked, Martina's Table, Let's Eat, Reality Cupcakes, Comfort Food Tour, etc.) and the slide of long running shows (Food Network Star, Iron Chef Gauntlet, Comeback Kitchen and GGG) there were some standouts: 'Best Baker in America', which was up 45 percent from its first season, the 'Gingerbread' franchises and 'Girl Meets Farm', which has to prove in 2019 that, as 'The Kitchen' did, that it can stand out by itself without depending on being the lead out of 'Pioneer Woman'. In 2018 based only on original episodes, 'The Kitchen' beat "Pioneer Woman' in viewers and all demos, to become the network's top daytime show.

The new baking game show 'Winner Cake All' with Giada DeLaurentiis premiered Monday night (Dec 31st) to dissapointing ratings: 632,000 viewers and 0.14 demo. Next week, with no holiday or sports specials on other networks and with the premiere of 'Kids Baking Championship' as its lead, we'll see if 'Winner Cake All' improves.

I love that Holiday Wars was #1 in the specials/pilots categories. I hope they return it to the holiday lineup like it used to be. I still don’t understand why they did away with it last year and gave us only one episode this year. I don’t know what its ratings were when it was a 4 or 5 episode show like Halloween Wars is but it would perform well now. 

As always, I appreciate seeing these ratings.

For Holiday Wars, I think (hope) they were testing out the format changes from Halloween Wars to see if it worked before doing another full season.   I want to see it come back, but they need to rework the judging panel.   I don't think it's a good idea to have Shimin on back-to-back shows,, Jason has too many other baking shows he's judging and they really need the rotating non-culinary judge.

 For Giada's show a) why are they having her host a baking show and b) who the hell premiers a show on New Year's Eve?

I loved when Charles Phoenix was a judge on Holiday Wars. He was a hoot and certainly brought the holiday bling with his suits! He judged alongside Sherry Yard, who is on the latest Great American Bake Off season. Once in a while, FN gives me a glimmer of hope by upgrading its judging or hosting talent (most recently, Kerry Vincent on the Gingerbread Showdown), so why not bring back the great Ron Ben-Israel? This is probably impossible, but Kerry and RBI together would be awesome.

 Food Network seems to have sourced on Ron Ben-Israel and I'm not sure why.    I think RBI has stated he'd like to do more shows on FN but I feel like there has to have been some kind of backstage drama.

I think you may be right. I looked at RBI’s twitter and he has retweeted many posts begging FN to bring him back and he responded warmly and willingly to these posts. One post mentioned that he was a judge on Nailed It (on Netflix) for one episode. Gosh, I tried to make it through the holiday Nailed It and just couldn’t. That female host is way too OTT for me.  But if I can find the episode with RBI, I will suffer through.  I can’t imagine why FN would be so short-sighted to ignore a person of RBI’s talent, personality and knowledge, but it’s their loss. I am really curious about this.

I like Trisha, Giada and Ina.  They make stuff in my wheelhouse and I like to get new ideas.  Tried watching Girl to Farm and she has way too many ingredients to even bother with.  I would need a pantry just for all the herbs she packs.  I am more the 5 ingredients, a bit more or less.
