The finale of 'Worst Cooks' (1.08 million viewers/0.29 demo) was down 18% in viewers but unchanged in demo from last year's (1.31m/0.29 on 9/23/2018). On average, it was up 2% in viewers and down 4% demo from last year's. Out of the year's 3 season's of 'Worst Cooks', it was the least watched, beating the celebrity edition but by not much.

Three were 3 finales this past week: 'Supermarket Stakeout' barely averaged 700,000 viewers for its 6-episode season, thanks to the second episode (819,000 viewers). None of the remaining five reached 700,000. 'Family Restaurant Rivals' had a season average of 562,000 viewers/0.13 demo while 'Good Eats: The Return's averaged 602,000 viewers/0.18 demo for its run. 'Carnivorous', another FN dud averaged 604,000 viewers. It seems unlikely for FN to bring back 'Good Eats' with these low numbers, while 'Stakeout' is likely to come back, given that the network has invested a lot on Alex Guarnischelli, putting her on every show, like being named substitute host of ‘The Kitchen’.

ULTIMATE THANKSGIVING CHALLENGE (Sunday, November 3rd at 9pm ET/PT)

Six chefs face off to create the ultimate Thanksgiving dishes. Host Giada De Laurentiis puts the creative competitors to the test, challenging them to prepare the most delicious and innovative turkeys, side dishes and desserts to ever hit a dining table. Judges Alex Guarnaschelli, Carla Hall and Christian Petroni choose the $25,000 winner in the finale on Sunday, November 24th at 9pm ET/PT.

WORST COOKS IN AMERICA: THANKSGIVING REDEMPTION (Nov, 10th at 10pm ET/PT)

Four beloved former Worst Cooks recruits return to boot camp in Worst Cooks in America: Thanksgiving Redemption. Chefs Anne Burrell and Scott Conant teach the much-improved recruits how to make a Thanksgiving meal to impress judges Jonathan Waxman, Esther Choi and Cliff Crooks - and only the winning team wins kitchen appliances worth $10,000. Follow #WorstCooks on social media for more of the very best of the worst.

THANKSGIVING PIE FIGHT (Thursday, November 14th at 10pm ET/PT)

Four top pie bakers compete to create the most outrageously visual and edible pies on this brand-new special. Hosted by Sunny Anderson, the bakers must utilize height-defying techniques, intricate designs, dyed doughs and more to blow away judges Nacho Aguirre, Jessica Clark-Bojin and Scott Conant. With a $10,000 prize at stake, the self-taught and professional bakers will stop at nothing to make the most elaborate pies. Follow the fight on social media using #ThanksgivingPieFight.

GOOD EATS: THANKSGIVING (Sunday, November 17th at 8pm ET/PT)

Alton Brown talks turkey in a one-hour show dedicated to the bird. Follow #GoodEatsTheReturn to get Alton's turkey tips and more.

Only the most successful cake artist will take home the grand prize of $10,000 and have their work featured in Macy's flagship New York City store, plus receive tickets to the parade. Judges are Buddy Valastro, Susan Tercero and last season's winner Timbo Sullivan. Join the conversation anytime using #ThanksgivingCakeSpectacular.

FOOD NETWORK RATINGS FOR ORIGINAL PROGRAMS
3RD QUARTER (JULY 1-SEPT 30, 2019)

--Top new show in the quarter ‘BBQ Brawl: Flay vs Symon’ didn’t reach a million viewers on average; the other new shows were well behind, being ‘Good Eats: The Return’ the biggest disappointment, while the family game show concept fails for the second time with ‘Family Restaurant Rivals’.

--All weeknight prime time shows but ‘Guy’s Grocery Games’ were down a lot in viewers in demos, while ‘Restaurant Impossible’, ‘Revisited’ and ‘The Great Food Truck Race’ move to Sunday nights were the brightest spots. 'Kids Baking Championship' and 'Worst Bakers in America' experienced the biggest drops, the latter with a loss of 51% in viewers and 69% in demo from its first season in 2016.

--In daytime, 'The Kitchen’ regained the top spot in viewers (it is tops in demos) from ‘Pioneer Woman', which lost almost 4 million total viewers for the quarter, while ‘The Kitchen’ went up slightly’. Other daytime shows have decent numbers but so-so demos.

Food Network And Girl Scouts Of America Team Up For A Primetime Series GIRL SCOUT COOKIE CHAMPIONSHIP

Quote

Hosted by Alyson Hannigan,  the series challenges professional bakers to transform their favorite Girl Scout Cookies® into decadent and delicious dessert creations.  Judges Nacho Aguirre and Katie Lee are joined each episode by a rotating third judge, including confirmed panelist Carla Hall.  The series is slated to premiere Q1 2020 during Girl Scout Cookie season.

I don't see why FN is pushing Katie Lee as a personality ... because she doesn't have one.

The poor performance of the Halloween shows shocks me. I wonder why viewership is down? I’ll watch any holiday show even if it’s the suckiest thing ever. I’ll admit that the first few seasons of HW and HBC were better than in recent years, but still...Halloween!

My guess:  Cord cutting and overkill.

I'm just about cooking competitioned (not a real word I know) out. I still DVR some of them but find myself using them as background noise more then paying full attention. The holiday and seasonal ones kinda start to blur together after awhile.

As ratings for the last quarter of the year started, for the 2nd week in a row, 'Halloween Wars' had considerable ratings losses compared to last season. So far, 'Wars' is down 20% in viewers and 30% in demo from 2018. 'Haunted Gingerbread Showdown's premiere was down 6% in viewers and 16% demo from last year with Sandra Lee as host. 'Halloween Baking Championship' is down just 1% in viewers but 12% in demo from last season. 'Halloween Cake-Off' is averaging 813,000 viewers and 0.23 demo, typical numbers for Duff Goldman's solo shows: not huge numbers but not disappointing by any means. This seasonal game shows tend to increase in ratings as they come to a close but, at the moment, audiences aren't as glued to the TV as they were last year.

Sunday’s ‘Halloween Wars’ finale (1.25 million viewers/0.34 demo) lost 20 percent of viewers and a third of demo from last year’s finale (1.56M/0.51--10/28/2018). Season 9 lost 19% in viewers and a third in demo from S8. ‘Wars’ average was stable from seasons 6-8 but, in 2019 it went down a lot: beaten in demo by ‘Halloween Baking Championship’ and it didn’t take the top spot in the weekly ratings 3 out of 5 times to ‘The Kitchen’.

'HALLOWEEN WARS' RATINGS AVERAGE BY SEASON:  (Sources: FutonCritic & Showbuzzdaily)
S1 (10/2-10/23, 2011): 2.17 million viewers, 0.88 demo
S2 (10/7-10/28, 2012): 1.78M/0.68
S3 (10/6-10/27, 2013): 1.86M/0.63
S4 (10/5-10/26, 2014): 1.57M/0.57
S5 (10/4-10/25, 2015): 1.69M/0.57
S6 (10/2-10/30, 2016): 1.43M/0.48
S7 (10/1-10/29, 2017): 1.44M/0.47
S8 (10/1-10/29, 2018): 1.48M/0.48
S9 (9/29-10/27, 2019): 1.20M/0.32

In other seasonal finale news, ‘Haunted Gingerbread Showdown’s finale (883,000/0.23) lost 16% in viewers and a huge 36% in demo from S1 (1.05M/0.36 on 10/28/2018) with Sandra Lee as host. For the season, ‘HGS’ was down 11% in viewers and 26% demo. Monday 10/28’s ‘Halloween Baking Championship’s finale (1.24M/0.33) went down 21% in viewers and 25% in demo from 2018 (1.57M/0.44 on 10/29/2018). ‘HBC’ lost the least amount of viewers out of all the Halloween game shows (7%) but was down 22% in demo. ‘Halloween Cake-Off’ averaged 802,000/0.25 and the latest 'Chopped' stunt ('Sweets Showdown') averaged 761,000/0.21 so, pretty much FN’s Halloween programming was pretty disappointing in ratings. Let’s see how they do with their holiday shows.

When Guy Fieri won the first TNFNS a hundred years ago, I was not pleased. I still think he was a ringer. And obnoxious. And a sad excuse for a "chef" with his repertoire of mostly fried foods covered with gloppy sweet sauces. Then I loathed Diners, Drive Ins and Dives for years. I still think that it was a bad turning point for FN.

Last night when I channel-surfed to FN, I was all Yay! Guy's Grocery Games!  A welcome relief from the endless Halloween Wars, Halloween Cake-Off, Halloween Baking  Championship, ad nauseum.

Damn you FN for making me happy to see Guy Fieri! *shakes fist*

Thank you for that info! I had no memory of them whatsoever! Maybe that's why FN planted Guy for the second season. They had a plan to change the direction of the network with him, in my opinion.

To be fair to Guy, one of the reasons I was so turned off by his win was the awful way Bobby Flay treated the other finalist (Reggie?). As I recall (and my memory is obviously faulty) Flay pretty much ignored him while fawning over Guy.

In any event, over the years Guy has grown on me. Never thought it would happen.

Most of the early FNS finales were a shitshow.  I could have sworn that Guy beat a blonde lady with huge teeth and when they announced the winner she turned around and started sobbing while everyone ignored her.  Maybe it was a different season.  Anyway, I stopped watching after that one.

That was Season 3 when Amy Finley won - wasn't Guy. And when the viewers supposedly voted for the winner. The blonde woman's family was doing everything they could to make sure she won.

I've wanted them to bring this show back for years, but putting aside Ian Ziering as host (WTF?) the fact that they'll be competing in two rounds makes it sound more like Cake Wars with the FNC name slapped on it.

Huh.  That sounds like a completely new show with the same name.  I wonder who the judges will be.   I've never heard of Ian Ziering.  It sounds like it could be interesting if they don't hoke it up with twists and other nonsense.

All holiday game show season premieres picked up where the Halloween shows left: down in viewers and demo, in some cases way down. ‘Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge’ (913,000 viewers/0.22 demo) was down 23% in viewers and a big 43% from last year's debut (1.19M/0.39 on 11/4/2018). Monday, 11/4’s premiere of ‘Holiday Baking Championship’ (1.16M/0.28) lost the least in viewers at 12% but dropped 30% in demo from 2018’s (1.32M/0.40). Finally, ‘Christmas Cookie Challenge’ (686,000/0.17) lost 30% in viewers and half its demo from last year's (982,000/0.34). Given that ‘Cookie’ was at 11PM instead of its 10PM timeslot, it’s concerning that it lost 32% in viewers and a third in demo from its lead, a ‘Holiday Baking Championship: ‘Sweet Revenge’ (1.01M/0.24).

Episode 2 of 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge', 'Holiday Baking Championship' (1.37M/0.36 on 11/11) & 'Christmas Cookie Challenge' (1.04M/0.26 on 11/11), recovered a lot of audience from their premieres. All three are still down big from last season.

The 'Worst Cooks' Thanksgiving redemption special aired with mixed results: up 9% in viewers from last year with Tyler Florence co-hosting, but was down 15% in demo.

For the third week in a row, 'Guy's Grocery Games' was the least watched original show.

Giada to me is not a good competition host (Ultimate Thanksgiving). She could stand to eat a sandwich, she likes low cut dresses so the attention gets focused on her, and honestly, she's got the reputation of being a bit mean in particular to other women. They've got all these FNS winners, let one of them take a crack at it.

‘Holiday Baking Championship’s 3rd episode on Monday 11/18 (1.31 million viewers/0.33 demo) was down 20 & 25 percent respectively from last year. On average, so far, 'HBC' is still down a quarter of its viewers and a third in demo from 2018. ‘Christmas Cookie Challenge’ is faring worst and ‘Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge’ got its worst rating ever this past Sunday: 848,000 viewers/0.17 demo. A rerun of ‘Pioneer Woman: Thanksgiving’ at 10AM got more than a million viewers and was FN’s highest rated show that day. Just like last year, the Thanksgiving game show it’s on its way to become the network’s lowest rated Sunday 9P show for the year. No wonder FN isn’t promoting ‘Thanksgiving Challenge’ that much any longer in favor of ‘Holiday Wars’ and ‘Great Food Truck Race’.

For the fourth week in a row, ‘GGG’ was FN’s lowest rated original.

FN is really selling their Kitchen app hard, to the point of having an honest-to-God infomercial. But all I can think is, you’re selling an app on what your channel should be in the first place and was when it first started. The app is like them admitting their channel (and CC) does nothing to teach people cooking, but instead of making a programming overhaul, ask that people pay them more money for an app. And I bet they don’t have the decency to make it ad-free.

Anyway, the Panna app has existed for years that has been doing this very thing with more reputable cooks than Ree Drummond and Molly Yeh. Too bad FN got Carla Hall instead of Panna. Hall would be my motivator to check out the app. Though it’s not a good look that one of the few Black cooks FN decides to hire is relegated to the app. I’m betting they don’t pick up Kardea Brown for a full series.

I'm annoyed also with the hour long infomercials for the new app. I downloaded it - it's free. You only have to pay if you want to participate in their live sessions. There are recipes in the free part of the app, but I got so annoyed with the tv infomercials I deleted it.

I'm annoyed at the in show logo advertising the app that takes up a quarter of the screen.   I mostly just listen because it bugs so much.

Carla has been a judge on the Halloween and Thanksgiving shows for several years and pops up on Beat Bobby Flay like every other FN personally so she's not relegated to online only.

They're not pushing the app because they don't have teaching shows on air anymore.  It's because traditional TV viewing in eroding at an alarming pace and they're trying to position themselves for a post-cable TV world.

The season finale of 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge' (1.06 million viewers/0.26 demo) was down 4% in viewers and 10% from last year's finale (1.11M/0.29 on 11/18/2018). Overall, the season was down 12% in viewers and 30% in demo from 2018's. Barring a 'Holiday Wars' total ratings disaster (highly unlikely), 'UTC' will end, for the second year in a row' as the lowest rated FN Sunday 9PM game show for the year.

On daytime, 'The Kitchen: Thanksgiving Live' (1.23M/0.22) disappointed, as the regular Thanksgiving episode of 'The Kitchen' the week before, did almost 1.6 million viewers. Counting the other two airings of the special on Sunday and Monday, it totaled 2.18 million viewers/0.38 demo. A final airing is scheduled for Thanksgiving morning.

Finally, after four weeks in a row, and thanks to its Thanksgiving episode, 'GGG' was not the lowest rated original for the week, giving that dishonor to 'Chopped Junior'.

This past week, four holiday game shows premiered to mostly disappointing results: the biggest and the one FN put a ton of promotion behind, ‘Holiday Wars’ barely got a million viewers, down 16 percent in viewers and half its demo from the pilot last November (1.21M/0.46 on 11/25/2018). Even the Saturday morning shows had more viewers.

Following ‘Holiday Wars’, ‘Holiday Gingerbread Showdown’ returned for a second season with new host Paige Davis and got worst ratings: 976,000 viewers and 0.22 demo, down 25% in viewers and 39% demo from last year’s debut (1.29M/0.36 on 11/25/2018).

Maybe it wasn’t a good idea to have a second edition of ‘Great Food Truck Race’ (it was the only FN signature game show to air once a year). Although its premiere’s ratings were higher than other shows in that timeslot, like Andrew Zimmern’s ‘Big Food Truck Tip’, those weren’t good numbers for 'GFTR'. And, last night (12/4), while 'GGG's ratings were up, 'GFTR's second episode ratings were down close to 10%. If ‘GFTR’ stayed on Sundays, maybe the results could have been better.

The bright spot out of the four premieres was ‘Santa’s Baking Blizzard’ which saw numbers on par with this summer’s ‘Flay Vs Symon’ in the Thursday 9P timeslot.

Yeah, and they are in a tough spot because they don't have any "must see" programming, which makes them even more reliant on the traditional system.

Where somebody like CBS can double dip* as things evolve, FN doesn't have something like a Star Trek series that people will pay to see on the separate app/service.

* CBS gets $3-$4 per month per cable and satellite customer, which Comcast or DirecTV collects for them, and then they also get $6 or $10 per month for CBS All Access. Cable subscribers who want to see the exclusive all access content are paying at more than $9 per month to CBS.

Food Network gets WAY less than that, and with a lack of must see programming, they can't really jack up their rates.  It's unsurprising that they're pushing their app really hard. They need to do something to position themselves for an uncertain future.

Umm, what?? Obsession?

With Thin Mints, maybe. I could understand that.

December 23rd's season finale of 'Holiday Baking Championship' came at 1.86 million viewers/0.43 demo. Although it came strong during a season that started with big double digit ratings drops, on average, 'HBC's season ended down 13 percent in viewers and 20% demo from 2018's and won't repeat as FN's most watched series for the year.

While 'Holiday Wars' wasn't a flop by any means, it wasn't a huge hit either given the tons of promotion it had. It was FN's second least watched Sunday 9P game show (least was 'Ultimate Thanksgiving Challenge'). 'Holiday Gingerbread Showdown' with Paige Davis as host and 'Christmas Cookie Challenge' suffered the biggest year to year drops of all the holiday game shows: 'HGS' lost 1/4 of its viewers and 'CCC' shed 1/3 of its demo.

Meanwhile, its better to leave some shows to air just once a year and 'Great Food Truck Race' must remain that way, after suffering a loss of almost half of its summer audience.

I find it interesting how a bunch of the long-established primetime shows have experienced noticeable ratings drops this year, some even in the past few months.  Yes, there are a number of major holidays in the last 3 months of the year and people are out and about shopping, socializing, watching Hallmark, watching football, cutting the cord, etc, but I'm doubtful that some of these shows will recover the thousands or hundreds of thousands of viewers they've lost.

And as @JTMacc99 pointed out above, they've got nothing else to fall back on.  They have shows that are getting tired while they struggle to launch new shows, many of which that wind up quickly disappearing.
