Dimity March 7 Share March 7 Not a bad episode. Connor stuff was just dumb but otherwise it was mildly diverting. One thing though, when we first see the tire store Audrey appears to be working there at least some of the time. Did I miss a reference to her having done that before Mandy, Georgie and the baby moved in? Because what I saw made it seem like she was not involved and her changes were ultimately pointless. 6 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8600226

Expand Yes, but I think that was all on Young Sheldon. They retconned for GM. Yep, and it was a totally different store layout, too. Audrey seemed to be running the office and Jim was manning the counter that was not facing the front door like now but was on the left as you enter, if I remember it right. So, if Audrey is not involved with the tire store in GMFM, is she retired (at her age?)? Or is she supposed to have always been a housewife? 5 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8600272

A hardware store or mechanic's shop will be more "inviting" to women when we are no longer condescended to or flat out ripped off. Potted plants won't do it (although a toilet seat helps). appositival March 7 Share March 7 So Jim and Audrey do have a stable sub/dom relationship? Connor wouldn't need to sample sounds for very long (especially the doorbell). Maybe that's why this episode felt like it could have been written in the 90s, or actually more like the 60s. Silly woman comes in and tries to beautify a tire store, pause for indulgent laughter, eventually gets tired of this and goes home (where she belongs) to cook and clean and look after the kiddies. Lesson learned. Ugh. 5 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8600612

What he's doing has been around for a while. It's the art of making music from non-musical noise or "Noise Music". It's a little avante garde for sure but not unheard of. And it has actually found its way into techno. music in the form of ambient and industrial techno. I'm waiting (and hoping) for Connor to become the surprise breakout success of the family sooner or later. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_music#:~:text=Noise music is a genre, musical and non-musical sound. 10 hours ago, DoYouLikeMutton said: So TRUE! My husband was a manager in auto. repair shops and new brakes squeaking is actually VERY common and is most often caused by them breaking in, so telling you that was not just to placate you but had a basis in truth. On the other hand if you think they are making a "weird" noise it could be the sign of a real problem and so it's best to have it checked out rather than take the risk. And that's what my husband used to tell customers. He didn't assume it was just the normal noise as customers don't really know how to tell normal from abnormal. So he always told them to bring the car in to have it checked out. And you wouldn't believe how often it happened either. Like I said, it's very common! I even had it happen myself once. 1 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8601425

We walked in, I said I was looking for a 5 speed manual shift(this was back in the early 80s). The way the character of Conner has been gradually expanded but still has limited plot relevance seems to indicate the writers were also not sure he was necessary. The same applies to Ruben, but so far he's been relegated to not much more than one-liners. Throughout the history of TV sitcoms, there have been many incidental characters who rose in importance, like Fonzie. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8602274

I actually think they've been trying to make Connor less quirky or at least that's where they might be trying to take his character. Noise music is a thing, it's not that out there. If he finds a niche in the music business somewhere he will bloom. I think he may just be a late bloomer. He's an introvert but whenever he does show parts of himself he doesn't seem so weird. possibilities March 11 Share March 11 I agree that him not having a job or really any life outside the family is a problem. They keep hinting that it's not really his capacity so much as Audrey holding him back. He got a job immediately-- the very same day-- that his father said it bothered him that he wasn't independent. But they basically had him quit the same day-- not because he wanted to, it wasn't like he threw a tantrum and walked out. He did his own laundry and took care of his neice perfectly competently the second anybody asked. When asked why he didn't do it sooner, he said nobody asked him before. It's a thin line they are walking here-- you don't want him to look like he's taking advantage and being lazy. But at the same time, nobody seems to think he can do anything, or Audrey prefers to keep him helpless, and that is also a disservice to him. The low expectations are a problem. It happens to a lot of people with various disabilities (I know first hand, I've seen and experienced it over and over again against me in certain situations and also against friends), and it would be great if he breaks out of the stagnation and surprises everyone, instead of the show just keeping him stuck. I like that he's happy, and I like that he is actually motivated in particular areas, and willing and able to do things when asked. It becomes a question: why don't they ask him more? Why doesn't he do more? The show might not be ambitious enough to actually make a statement by having him grow and challenge the people around him who thought he was without potential. But I hope it is and that it doesn't take too long. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/152210-s01e13-mcallister-auto-loves-the-ladies/#findComment-8603925
