When Hitler started invading his neighbors, most of Europe rose up against him and after Pearl Harbor the US came into it to. Through their combined efforts and so much sacrifice, the Allies prevailed. Who will ride in to save the world from Fascism this time?

Who  will save us from ourselves?

Along that vein, frightening to me news today.  The right is indeed gaining ground.  I saw a survey of people on Social Security.  Something like 80% think things will be better with Trump!!  They don't seem to recognize he wants to mess with their healthcare and has no control over the price of eggs.

A survey I saw this morning that had stayed steady at around 30% of people showing conservative views on things for a few years now had 45% looking forward to Trump.

We're seeing the same thing in Canada.  People are fed up with Trudeau and are lining up to vote in Pollievre.  Even though he has made it as clear as he can that he wants to decimate our social safety net.  The rich and the upper middle class aren't going to suffer under the Cons, but everyone else will be affected.  Especially anyone who depends on govt programs - many instituted under this Liberal government.  But sure we'll be better off.  Sigh.

That number will shrink once he takes office again.  He is only going to try to do the bad things he promised and none of the (improbable) good things he promised.  Also a lot of people are basing there feelings on Tump compared to Biden.  Once they are judging Trump on his own (de) merits they will not have a favorable opinion of him.

I just read a letter to the editor on the op-ed page of our local paper. The writer's point was that they knew some people were upset about Trump winning the election but by the same token, other people had been upset about Biden's win in 2020. They said that people had given Biden a chance to prove himself and that we should also give Trump a chance. Does this strike anyone else as someone with their head completely up their own ass?

Trump was a given a chance 8 years ago and he fucked it up.   People died because of how poorly he handled the pandemic.

A meme I came across the other day was something along the lines of "in an alternative universe Hilary Clinton is on trial for the 8 people who died of Covid under her administration".  Totally agree.  Trump managed to make Fauci public enemy number one for trying to keep people alive.

Yes, it does. Was the writer Jeff Bezos, by chance?

For those who haven't seen or heard, Washington Post editors killed Ann Telnaes' latest cartoon. She responded by resigning. Democracy Dies in Darkness, indeed, and Bezos' fingerprints are all over the light switch.

You know I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't why Bezos bought the Washington Post.

I won't be surprised if the House tries to post date impeach Biden.  You know just to have it in the books. And speaking of Fauci I won't be surprised if the Justice Dept Trump's goon squad indict Fauci on (no pun intended) trumped up charges.

He bought the Washington Post for $250 million+; he didn't need to buy it but he wanted to leave his mark - in competition with Musk. He has a space dream (much like Musk, but Bezos wants giant space habitats rather than a Mars colony). If he genuinely believes that this is the only hope/future for humanity, and that Musk "winning" will doom us all to a Mars dead end...

...or maybe they think they're going the Peter F Hamilton route of "maybe I'll invent wormholes and have infinite money and live forever and have my own planets."

Oh man, I'm getting Total Recall vibes already!

This.

How many more fucking chances does this asshole need? He's already proven NUMEROUS times over that he's a complete and total jerk who thorws temper tantrums over the slightest things and who doesn't give a shit about anyone other than himself. Stop fucking coddling him already, people, call him out for his insanity and hold him accountable already, for the love of God

(Incidentally, his whining about the flags flying at half mast for Carter is a prime example of why I have no respect for Trump supporters. I don't get how they're not utterly embarrassed to be supporting someone who's that big a crybaby and who has to make a moment honoring someone else all about him. Anyone who looks at that kind of behavior and still thinks he's somebody worth supporting and voting for, they're a sellfish moron. Plain and simple. That's just not up for debate.)

It's true. Trump always get bailed out.  Someone always comes to his rescue. And it has made him a raging narcissistic elderly toddler.  And his base and Republicans in Congress continue to enable him. With an assist from SCOTUS. I mean there are people who seriously want us to upend our democracy and just let him stay in office for however long he wants.  Who don't care that he personally profits from his time in office.  That turn a blind eye to the rampant corruption that always surrounds him

The flag thing is true to his character but for anyone agreeing with him shame on you.

Regarding the vote for the Speaker of the House, I think all the loons realized they couldn't have total chaos less than three weeks from Inauguration Day and thus the reelection of Mike Johnson.  However, there are no guarantees that the MAGA folks won't move to oust Johnson at some point post-January 20.  Unless they've changed the rules, doesn't it take just one representative to make a motion to vacate?

Perhaps Trump's tirade at the flag being flown at half mast on January 20 is completely made up outrage so he can appear to be the bigger person by not ordering the flag to full mast after he's sworn in.  However, if he genuinely thinks this is an outrage and he rescinds Biden's proclamation to lower the flag for a full 30 days, there will be a tremendous backlash.  Isn't there one semi-sane person in his entourage who will tell him that disrespecting a dead president the moment he is sworn in would be a terrible decision?

They changed that rule yesterday after they elected Johnson Speaker again. Any motion to vacate the Speaker's chair will require at least nine members from the Speaker’s party in order to receive a vote.

I know they only changed it before because Gaetz and his crew were out to get Kevin McCarthy.  Did they change it back to what it was before or is this yet another new variation?

In 2016 I was more forgiving of people who voted for him.  A lot of voters wanted something to change.  A lot of voters just didn't like Hillary. But now after all the fuck ups he did in his first term and the insurrection he started and his promise to now punish his enemies I'm in a much less forgiving mood.

I guess here's my argument for those who say we need to just "give him a chance" - we'll give him the same chance he and others on the right gave Obama, or the same chance that Trump supporters gave Biden on January 6th 2021. Deal?

Also, the guy's in, what, his late 70s now? We're not exactly talking about a young man who's made a few innocent mistakes and is still learning here, for cripes' sakes.

I swear to God if I hear some talking head say at any point Trump looks or acts presidential like Trump is finally doing it I'm going to fucking scream.  This is his second go around so he should know how to be president.

The guy is not completely with it.  He might not even last his term.  He reminds me of an old man (maybe 90?) who lives in my building who'd ask every woman under 60 whether they're movie stars (and telling them they should have been when they say they're not.  Some women keep quiet, but others (like me) will act really rude to him)  It's really gross and since it's a condo, the best we can do is tell management and/or the board.  He can't be evicted since he owns the unit.  I'm pretty sure this old dude is also not 100% with it.

Trump's father had alzheimers.  And I think his mother also suffered from dementia. So there is family history.

And for all the talk about Biden's mental acuity there has not been enough media coverage of Trump's mental decline.

One of Trump's nephews has said that dementia "runs in the family."

Based only on what I've read about Trump's behavior at his rallies over the past few months I'd have a hard time believing he is not in the early (or perhaps not so early) stages of dementia.  The really terrible thing about this is I think his family and those close to him have to be fully aware of this and are doing nothing to help him, or your country.

Melania is most likely counting the days till he keels over.  And his kids are probably checking to see if they are in the will.  I hope when he dies we find out he was in massive debt and he has no money to leave his family.

I didn't know the answer to that question, but I looked it up and this article from two years ago, when Kevin McCarthy was seated, explains it.

We don't have to wait to find out Trump is broke. He already is and has been. His wealth has always been tied to the company and the Trump company has been leveraged to the hilt these last 10 or so years. This is why he won't release his financials.

I do think Ivanka is fully aware how broke her father is. Junior and Eric are too dumb to put tow and two together to figure out how screwed they will be once their dad dies and the company dies with him. The creative accounting Trump used to stave off financial ruin has an expiration date.

It's why he is a constant campaigner, so he can get donations that he can leech off.  And also why he sells all that crap - the shoes, watches, etc.  It's all about the money.  Why is he seeking millions in donations to his inaugural committee?  How much is going into his pockets?  He's a grifter, always has been, always will be.

When I was eighteen, and my parents moved us to Ohio, and this tiny apartment that I’m guessing was a large bedroom, before they squeezed a few rooms in there, there was a guy who lived downstairs, who was creepy with us.  I didn’t mind someone appearing overly friendly in a shy-but-trying way. He was different.  He took my sister’s hand, and mine, held them in a strange way, then asked us both to the movies, and assured us that he was harmless.  Um, yeah, okay.  He once tried to get into our apartment, with a credit card on the lock trick. I was in the bath, got out, dressed, and called my dad.  He was an alcoholic, so it could have just been that he was drunk, but that night he freaked me out.

Someone mentioned universal basic income.  It’s helping people in poverty, in Brazil.

Quote

A program in Brazil that gives a monthly cash sum to families living in poverty has an unexpected — and welcome result. A new study shows that it is dramatically reducing tuberculosis rates.

Quote

UBI studies across the world have always shown they lead to better lives, better health, better mental health, and leading to more opportunities such as education and jobs. But then governments would have to work for people which is the biggest problem when we have half of societies seemingly hellbent on punishing the poor and giving more and more to the rich and powerful.

where demtentia is concerned, my mum dealt with it a bit, before she went into the hospital, and then the final test before admitting her, seemed to really bring it on.  She was rarely lucid after that.
