Chit-Chat: The Feels

Biden hurt people.  He did more harm to the Black community than anyone when he pushed the 1994 crime bill.  The bill spent $9 billion to open up more prisons.  DECADES of prison sentences for young black men and women, decimating families.  Said that “forced busing” to desegregate schools would cause his children to “grow up in a racial jungle.”  Accused of sexual assault by one brave woman (disgustingly brushed under the rug) and accused of improper conduct by seven other women.

This is just off the top of my head. I don’t think he is a shining example of good character.

And that's not even getting into his actions with regards to Gaza.

Trump is loved my many many people.  He was voted in, majority rules.  He is not seen as the bad guy for a lot of people.
They are thrilled with what is going on.  The more I hear about the amounts of money sent out and the groups sending the money out are unable to account for BILLIONS of dollars, I’m not upset that they are stopping it.
I watched Jon Stewart interview a woman who was in charge of auditing and she hand-waved away the fact that they never passed an audit.  Everyone should be very upset about this.  Is it corruption?  Or just stupidity?  I’d like to know.

Trump won by 1.5% or so and received 49.7% of the popular vote, a plurality, not a majority.  This was not a landslide victory and I would like to see Trump and the GOP acknowledge that the country is divided rather than trying to rule like a conqueror.

Also, the Pentagon has failed seven audits in a row, but do we really think their budget is going to get cut?

I think I’d feel ok if everyone else in the bathroom had the same anatomy as I.  There’s no way to check obviously

So if a transgender woman went into a bathroom stall unless you looked under the stall to see if she was standing or sitting you wouldn't know if she had a penis or not.  You probably wouldn't even know the woman was transgender.  I'm not being antagonistic but I'm pretty sure most of us have been in a public bathroom with someone who is transgender and had no idea.

I've said before the only people that scare me are white MAGA men.

So for those of you who are against transitioned women using the ladies washroom, you would be okay with the transitioned men using your washroom? I follow some on Instagram and if I didn't know any better, I would never guess that they were transitioned. As long as they have the same plumbing as you it's okay, right?

Editing to add: I live in small town Alberta, and I've had to use this argument to get through to people who are against transitioned women using our washrooms. I'm not trying to be offensive.

I don't even notice other people in restrooms really. I just want to get in and out.

Same. I really cannot comprehend someone wanting to inspect every single person who enters a restroom. It's a place where funny noises and smells happen, who wants to make eye contact with the person who made them? Or have to make eye contact with random strangers after making those noises and smells? Just get in, do your business, wash your hands, and get out.

I don't know if I ever watched a whole episode. Was it controversial?

The bathrooms were unisex.  I don't remember if they even commented on it.  It was of course used for dramatic effect. Lots of conversations being overheard. That kinda thing.

I don't live in a progressive area but there are some places that have family restrooms that are unisex.

The bathroom freakout and targeting drag queens is a misdirect so that we are not talking about the people who are really grooming and sexually abusing children--the clergy and lay ministers.

I am deeply suspicious of anyone who wants to be the private parts police. Thankfully, when pressed on who would be enforcing this, especially with children, most people are equally repulsed.

I was about to give you a "wink" reaction, thinking you were talking about family homes, then I realized you were talking about the public kind.  Seems like those have been common for years in sports arenas, rec centers, shopping centers, etc.  I'm surprised they don't exist even in "non-progressive" areas.

Accessing this from Canada it says Gulf of Mexico with Gulf of America in brackets below that.  I think Google is embarrassed about this - as they should be.

Google kowtowing to Trump is pathetic.  This is what has happened to Trump his entire life.  People just going along with whatever his whims are.  I hope before he dies he gets a huge comeuppance.

Overruled!

I own only two complete sets of DVDs for television series: The West Wing and Ally McBeal

Each show won Emmys for Best Series, Drama and Comedy, respectively.

Each was created and mainly written by two outstanding writers, with yards-long credits over decades: Aaron Sorkin and David E. Kelley, respectively.

Ally McBeal was a great show.

Joking aside, I also loved the show.  I even wrote a letter requesting an autographed photo of the cast (NERD) and I received a letter back signed by David E. Kelley himself, I shit you not.  I still have it.  His signature at the bottom in blue point pen.  P.S.  He regretted to inform me that they did not send out autographed photos of the cast.

Also, to this day, I will watch ANYTHING David E. Kelley related because he is that good.

I watched Ally McBeal religiously back in the day.  Think I dropped off in Season 3 when quality noticably dipped (I heard it got better in S4 when RDJ joined). I'm worried about doing a rewatch because I have a feeling a lot doesn't hold up. I remember a lot of talk back then about the unisex bathroom in entertainment circles, so it still remains a cultural staple.

He also did The Practice which won Best Drama the same year Ally McBeal won Best Comedy.

He also did Big Little Lies.

Going back to getting rid of the penny, two legislators put forth bills this century, but they didn't go anywhere.  Obama agreed it was time to retire the penny, but said, “The penny is an example of something that I need legislation for.  And, frankly, given all of the big issues that we have to deal with day-in/day-out ... we're not able to get to it.”  He did not just assume authority he doesn't possess and order the Treasury Secretary to stop making them.

Canada eliminated the penny in Feb 2013 - and that seems like such a long time ago I hardly miss it.

I pay by cash at my preferred discount grocery store. And yes prices still include .99 and other off amounts. So you never know what the total will be. And yes there is sales tax on some items. But I have to say over the almost 12 years this has been in effect, for the most part my bill gets rounded down 😁

I’m mixed on DEK.  I loved Picket Fences(first 3 seasons only, the show majorly went down hill when Kelly left to focus on Chicago Hope), loved The Practice (except the last season which was unwatchable) , didn’t care for Ally McBeal, was meh on Chicago Hope and hate Boston Legal(I’ve never seen an episode but that’s basically what the last season of The Practice was and I resent it).

Also I hate the West Wing.  I saw it for the first time in 2020, but I don’t think it would have made a difference if I watched it while it was airing.  The characters are all too moderate and too focused on compromising with Republicans like it’s some noble thing to be lauded.  Sometimes compromise is necessary, for example Obamacare never would have passed without its, but I don’t think compromise is something to be strived for or something that should be a goal of Democrats.   Just look at Obamacare, it could have been a lot better if Democrats hadn’t been forced to compromise.  Basically I believe that when Democrats compromise, Americans lose.

Same.  What's a hoot is when your grandchild comes across a penny and says "what's this?" and you have to stop a minute and realize the penny got discontinued (does math in head) 5 years before she was born.

Who's got the biggest balls of them all? From Gizmodo, sourced from WAPO, Feb. 11, 2025.

Few developments better typify the unique insanity of the current political moment than the ascent of “Big Balls,” a 19-year-old software engineer who briefly worked at Elon Musk’s brain startup Neuralink, got recruited to the billionaire’s government-deconstructionist effort DOGE and, now, in a twist so ridiculous it seems like it was stolen straight out of South Park, has apparently been hired as a “senior advisor” to the U.S. State Department.

In reality, “Big Balls” is Edward Coristine, a high-achieving tech wunderkind, and the large-testicle-alluding-honorific is merely his online username. The Washington Post reports that Coristine, who is also a staffer at DOGE, was recently assigned to the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Technology. It’s unclear what Coristine, who only recently graduated from high school, will be doing at America’s diplomatic hub, but it understandably seems to have rattled senior officials at the agency. The Post notes that, for some reason, a government directory also lists Coristine as working for USAID—the international aid agency that Musk has all but shut down in the span of a week.

I've never seen the movie, but I know enough about it to ask whether we're in the prequel to Idiocracy.

The cowardice at Google is mind boggling.

Google’s online and mobile calendars are no longer including references to Black History Month, Women’s History Month and LGBTQ+ holidays, among other events.

The world’s biggest search engine previously marked the beginning of Black History Month in February and Pride Month in June, but the events do not appear for 2025.

The removal of the holidays was first reported by the Verge last week.

A Google spokesperson, Madison Cushman Veld, provided the Guardian with a statement that said the listed holidays were not “sustainable” for their model.

My Google calendar still recognizes Juneteenth. That's probably an oversight. 🙄

I’m sure all these frivolous bills (^ this one and the one about adding Trump to Mt. Rushmore are solely being drafted to flatter their Overlord and curry His favor.

They are also being drafted to take attention away from what Elon is doing. I do try to sample a bit of news from different sources that include the 3 major networks just to see what is gaining traction and where. Because I do believe the vast majority of Americans get their national news from those networks. And every time something inane like this happens, that is what gets reported on and not which department Elon is now trying to gut.

It's still a federal holiday.

I don't have a Twitter account, so cannot verify if this is true and can't find anything in the news about it yet, so if anyone with an account can stomach looking to see if it indeed happened:  I saw a screenshot of a post alleging that Elon Musk - pissed at Judge McConnell for ruling the Trump administration violated his order to unfreeze billions in federal grants and directing the White House to restore the funds immediately - just posted the full name of the judge's daughter, a photo of her, her employer information, and a page of a signed tax document she filed.

That is within the realm of possibility when it comes to Elon. I'm just thinking about how he reacted during that cave rescue in Thailand. Calling someone a pedophile after they tell you your plan is not feasible.

My brother watched Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC last night.  For what it's worth he said a democratic lawmaker said his republican colleagues don't agree with what is going on, but that they and their families have been threatened to comply.  Anyone else watch/hear/suspect this?

I'm not surprised at all. It's why we need dark money out of politics.  Most congresspeople will oppose and denounce a bill then turn around and vote for it anyway because the leaders cue up a replacement and threaten to primary said person.  And the replacement is usually a Yes man.

I have been watching clips of the show on repeat since Sunday. More specific, the clip from "Not Like Us" where Kendrick shades Drake. I'm not a fan of Kendrick, but I respect petty.

I didn't see it but I keep hearing how great it was. The one quote about fascism is resonating with millions of people, from Religion Unplugged-

The revolution about to be televised,” rapped Lamar. “You picked the right time but the wrong guy.”

Given the general meta nature of the performance, its commentary on America’s history of ignoring its legacy of oppression — as represented by Uncle Sam as a one-man Greek chorus reminding Lamar not to be too edgy — it seems clear that any references to Nazism were not endorsements but criticisms of America’s increasing affinity for the authoritarianism of the Third Reich.
