I've come to the conclusion that some (and you know who you are), but not all of you just want to wallow in misery, and as we all know 'misery loves company'.  To that end, you're really not interested in hearing what the other side has to say, even for the sake of conversation. All you care about is being right (even when proven wrong) and seem to get joy out of shaming an opposing view. Except for a handful of folks, I fail to see the humanity here. Apparently "likes" are more important than civility.

Your guy is always unhappy.  And you’ve talked about having to endure twelve years of misery, but haven’t expanded on why those years were so terrible.

Hey! Penguin poop is coveted as f*ck!

The tariffs will makr imported goods more expensive and that cost wil be passed along to the consumer here. If foreign (say) cars cost more, well, domestic car makers will up their prices competitively. Same with sneakers. Air conditioners. If you are not super rich this is not going to go well. Yes the US is a huge market, but the world can adjust around us. Yeah. There may be some conservative points about whether we should be in in NATO and providing weapons that can be discussed, but the tariffs are kind of the awful idea of someone who feels sick if a neighborhood child gets a sandwich in his kitchen without paying. Especially s we are gutting our universities and schools and resource facilities, which are our meaningful exports.

Domestic cars will also have to up their prices because they need parts that are tariffed.  Everyone is screwed.  All over the world.

I prefer to think of this thread as wallowing in reality.

Thank you.  I think since this thread started a lot of us have given each other strength to get through this. If I was on a thread that had more posters that disagreed with me than agreed with me I would probably find a friendlier space. If I thought my input would change someone's mind I might stay but life is too short to spend my time talking to a brick wall.

Yes, Trump's tariffs are going to alienate our allies even more. I really do think he is trying to turn us into Russia and not because he thinks it will be good for us but because he thinks it will be good for him.  Putin is his idol.

Four Senate Republicans join with Democrats to rebuke Trump tariff policy in key vote

One of them is McConnell who is retiring so he is most likely doing this to irk Trump. I don't ever count on Mitch to do the right thing simply because it's the right thing.

And I believe Trump is destroying our once great country on orders from Putin. I haven't forgotten his obsequious behavior around Putin that time in Helsinki (DT saying he took the word of Putin over our intelligence agencies was proof to me of Vlad owning this big, stupid, dangerous clown). Our only hope is that Republicans in Congress finally grow a pair and start protecting the US, for a change.

Hey, I'm willing to listen but often you're just reacting to stuff that's said here, not helping us understand how you feel and why you feel that way about it. So it's not easy to have a real conversation with you.

How do you feel about the tariffs? Look, I don't love tariffs, but I'm not against all of them in theory, especially those that are being done on a reciprocal basis, but I am against the crude, extreme and punitive way Trump's going about implementing them. Using them as a threat and bargaining chip is only going to make people get worried and negatively affect the economy and the stock market. If he were smart he wouldn't do so much all at once. He could automatically increase them in small increments on a yearly basis. But no, as usual he goes for the greatest impact for show. But I don't think that's the best solution. And some of those tariffs are just way too high period. As usual he acts like a bully, not a president.

Does he really though?  When they were trying to repeal the ACA he told people in Kentucky they were getting rid of as he called it Obamacare but it wouldn't affect their state exchange Kentucky Connect or whatever it's called which is of course the ACA. He deliberately lied to them.  Those that believed him well that is on them but he knew what was he doing.

Regarding McConnell's vote, two words: Kentucky Bourbon.

This made me wonder what will happen when and if the tariffs are lifted once and for all.

We aren't selling US liquor in our stores right now, we aren't buying anything American if there's an alternative, and we aren't vacationing in the US.  Will that change down the road?  I honestly don't think it will.

There is so much ill will generated right now.  As our PM says, the relationship Canada had with the US is broken.

I LOVE Granny Smith apples.  And almost every store only carries ones from the US.  Until I went to a local franchise a couple of days ago.  Organic Granny Smiths from Argentina.

Gee, I don't mean to "wallow in misery" but the loss of Meals on Wheels is going to directly affect an immediate family member and those of us who are caregivers for him. It's not just financially either. Yes, we will have to take the extra time and money to purchase food for him, but losing the ease of preparation for the recipient is a huge issue. We can't just buy frozen meals from the supermarket as they're not low sodium or low in sugars, etc.

Apologies for ruining your day by calling attention to the effects that the Trump/Musk chainsaw approach is having to people across the country. The biggest is obviously the loss of employment for tens of thousands of employees, but the trickle-down effects for recipients are also massive.

HHS layoffs hit Meals on Wheels and other services for seniors and disabled

Quote

The agency funds programs that run senior centers and distribute 216 million meals a year to older and disabled people through the Meals on Wheels program.

"The programs that ACL implements improve the lives of literally tens of millions of older adults, people with disabilities and their families and caregivers," says Barkoff, now director of a health law program at George Washington University's Milken Institute School of Public Health. "There's no way to have these RIFs and not impact the programs and the people who rely on them.

It's been interesting to see that in the day to day grocery run it's not been all that difficult to avoid buying American.

If you shop at Loblaws or one of its subsidiaries I'm sure though you've noticed how many of their President's Choice and yellow brand products are actually made in the US.  Sorry Loblaws but you already get enough of my money, I am bypassing your 'made in the US but sold as if they're Canadian' stuff for the foreseeable future!

It's because of the sanctions. The US, in theory, has no trade relations with them.

Yeah but if we keep pissing off the rest of the world they might be our new trade partners.

This whole thing is just embarrassing.  We have idiots in charge.  In what universe does it make sense to give one person so much power he can tank not only our economy but the global economy?  This clown thinks manufacturing plants are just going to pop up and start making the things we import.  First you would need to build the plants.  Second you would need the workforce.  Maybe he thinks all the federal workers will work in factories now.  With a cut in pay and no benefits of course.

Speaking of groceries apparently Trump actually said:

“It’s such an old-fashioned term but a beautiful term: groceries," he mused. "It sort of says a bag with different things in it."

If Biden had "mused" that there would have been an immediate outraged demand for him to be checked for dementia.

How on earth is "groceries" an old-fashioned term?

And "a bag with different things in it" could be my luggage.  WTF.

Wonder who Trump will blame for this.  This is from the WaPo

A group of powerful business leaders gathered to meet with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in late February, seeking reassurance that President Donald Trump could be dissuaded from following through on his promise to impose tariffs on trillions of dollars in imports.

According to four people familiar with the event, who, like others in this article, spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions, Lutnick rebuked the group, which included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, Nasdaq CEO Adena T. Friedman and Target CEO Brian Cornell. Lutnick said the executives should wake up every morning thinking about how they can support the country, two of the people familiar with the conversation said. And he made clear that Trump would forge ahead with plans to transform the global economy.

“It was … a shot across the bow that this is the direction the president is going and to take him seriously,” one of the people said. Or, as another attendee summed it up: “Time to get on board with MAGA.”

He really does think he is a mob boss and this country is his territory.

That line from Tombstone comes to mind when I ask myself what Trump thinks he's doing.

Wyatt: What makes a man like Ringo, Doc? What makes him do the things he does?

Doc Holliday: A man like Ringo has got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it.

Wyatt Earp: What does he need?

Doc Holliday: Revenge.

Wyatt Earp: For what?

Doc Holliday: Bein' born.

The worst part about these mush-mouth quotes is that I can't help but read them in his weaselly condescending monotone voice.

And since when is the term "groceries" old-fashioned?  Like, WTF does he think we're doing, loading up the family into the horse-drawn wagon for a ride into town to visit the general store?

I get it, the man probably hasn't stepped a foot into an actual grocery store in his entire life so no wonder he finds the term antiquated.

Where's the emoji that bangs its head on his desk while rolling its eyes and screaming at the heavens?  That's the one I need 1,000 times a day.

I wonder if subconsciously Trump has always known he wouldn't have had the life  he had if his older brother Fred Jr. hadn't become an alcoholic and walked away from the family business. Like he knows he was second choice. He is filled with so much hate and resentment but he also wants people to love him. He feeds off the MAGA adoration. I swear he keeps doing all this crazy stuff that everyone but him knows will be a giant clusterfuck just to see if something, anything will finally be a success. If you look at his life he really hasn't had a lot of true successes.  On some level he has to recognize he is going to be if not the worst then one of the very worst Presidents ever.

I've asked myself, what drives a man like Trump? He's not handsome and dumb as a box of rocks.  Rich dad who doesn't love him. Everything handed to him, but not with the elite.

What could go wrong?

Notice the way he just leaves it there for someone else to pick up? I had a friend who was an estate manager (butler) who told me that one of the maids complained to the Missus about the kids not flushing the toilet. The lady of the house looked at her in astonishment "That's YOUR job!"
