Our Aussie girl Nicola Olyslagers who got the silver is eccentric but lovable. She is a very devout pentecostal Christian and her pre-jump warm-ups look like she's in the middle of a church service at times. This is my first experience with Lyles. All I can say is the distance between cringe and showmanship is reached in about .004 seconds. Not a lot of margin for error.

NBC called it wrong.  It took the officials reviewing the photo to determine who won because it was so close.  I thought Jamaica had won because it looked like his head/feet crossed first.  This was the first time I learned they actually look at the clavicle. 

I have mixed feelings on Lyles.  He does come off as a bit arrogant.  And I both loved and hated that he admitted he underestimated his competition during one of the heats.  That's kind of arrogant but also, a rare moment of honesty supremely confident people rarely share. 

But then, I absolutely loved this message he posted on Twitter after the race.

I remember Noah Lyles taking a dig at the NBA for calling their teams "world champions" after winning titles, which I thought was stupid and unnecessary.  First of all, I've only heard them called "NBA champions" and second, why would he even care? 

He just likes to run his mouth and if he has those conditions listed above, then perhaps he should concentrate on his sport and his well-being.

He's a champion and an asshole - he's not the first to be both, and he won't be the last.  Some people love that, some don't.  Having any combination of his conditions doesn't give you a free pass to be a jerk.

Controversy in the women's 5k. Faith Kipyegon was DQed after jostling another competitor. But on replay, it looks like it's the other gal's fault. I hope they lodged a protest.

That was a lot of fun. I loved all his competitors rooting for him.  And the US silver medalist was trying to hype up the crowd.

All I see is about the world record the U.S. team set, but almost nothing about the handoff.  Just statements like this:

But what made her realize she wasn't where she was supposed to be, in time for her to run to where she was supposed to be, was some official(?), a lady on the track, in a big brimmed hat, who got Little's attention and pointed to where she was supposed to be standing.  None of the news reports mention that lady, and I can't believe that didn't give the team an advantage.

I guess it's allowed, because nobody's talking about it, but who was that lady in the hat?

AFAIK, where they stand after the first changeover is dependent on what position their team is when they're coming up to the changeover.  The runner getting the baton for the leading team should be closest to the inside, and presumably the officials are there to make sure the runners are in the right order.  (caveat, I didn't actually see any of the races)

On the olympics.com site she is listed as the silver medalist, so the decision must have been overturned.

So I watched the pole vault event on Peacock last night, streaming the replay of the live coverage. I couldn’t believe it took 3 1/2 hours, given that there were not that many competitors. Of course I didn’t realize that they took breaks when a track event was going on or a medal ceremony. It was one time I wish I was watching an edited summary.

I turn the TV on every morning between 10:00 am & 11:00 am (PDT) to watch track & field, & I will say it again, NBC SUCKS! I was watching the men's 400-meter semi's & the results of the 3rd semi was posted to the site a FULL FIVE MINUTES BEFORE THE RACE WAS EVEN SHOWN ON Peacock! LIVE my butt! 😏

All the talk was about the Kerr-Ingebrigtsen rivalry and Hocker spoils the party. Hard to believe going into Rio the U.S. hadn't won the 1500m since 1908 and now we've won it twice in the last three Olympic games.

And after watching the piece on Ingebrigtsen, I'd say it's good he fired his dad as coach.

Steeplechase is a rather baffling event to me. Like, how did it come about? Why did it come about ? "Hurdles ... but make it wet!"

That was another stunner for me. I don't think I've ever seen a US runner get near the medals for the steeplechase. Kenneth Rooks' bold move was thrilling to watch.

I just want to be sure about this. I know it works this way in swimming and want to be certain for T&F. If a sprinter runs in one of the heats, but not in the final and the team makes the podium, they still get a medal, right?

Yep, the people who ran the prelims and got replaced for the final still get a medal.

Amazing finish by Quincy Hall! I know nothing about the mechanics of track races, but even I could see he threw all technique out the window at the end and just freaking RAN with everything he had.

Tebogo had such a game face on when he came out, I could tell he meant business. 

Kind of looked like Lyles might be having an asthma attack after. 

ETA: Well, turns out Lyles has Covid but decided to compete anyway. Now I'm concerned about him with his asthma AND everyone else around him. They did say he's been wearing a mask the past couple days.
