‘Jeopardy!’ is coming to Amazon Prime with a different version

Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered a spin-off of the classic, called “Pop Culture Jeopardy!,” which marks the first-time “Jeopardy!” has created a version exclusively for a major streaming service.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/news/jeopardy-is-coming-to-amazon-prime-with-a-different-version/ar-BB1mnx9U?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=703124f2a2d3493385d6e16a4e4d7c88&ei=27

I kicked ass at Rock & Roll J! when that existed, but I have a very different relationship with pop culture these days.  Especially music -- I'll just sit here and mutter "I have no idea" for many of the clues about 21st century songs/artists.  But maybe watching the spin-off will make a few things stick in my brain and I'll do better in the pop culture categories in the regular show.  Not likely, but it will still be fun to watch.  I wonder how often it will "air".  Once a week would be nice.

I came across this 😞

In Memoriam: Claudia Perry  Society for American Baseball Research (sabr.org)

Claudia Perry, who served as SABR’s first female and first Black president of the Board of Directors, died at the age of 64 on May 16, 2024, in Evanston, Illinois.

(The pertinent part for here)

She was also one of the most popular champions in Jeopardy! history, appearing 11 times on the game show from 1996 to 2014. She won four games in a row in January 1997 and later appeared on Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions (1998), Million Dollar Masters (2002), and Battle of the Decades (2014). She also appeared on two other trivia game shows, ABC’s 500 Questions in 2016 and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? in 2018.

I often do well to recognize a returning champ from a Friday game by Monday's, but just reading Claudia's name brought her face and voice immediately to mind.

That obit, not being focused on J!, doesn't mention she became a four-game champion after being brought back -- she came in third her first game (for which the prize was a fax machine) but had suffered technical difficulties with her buzzer, so they gave her another shot several months later.  The archive has a transcript of an interview with her, as the Million Dollar Masters tournament was about to air, on the show's website about that and other J! things.

Quote

Did anything unusual happen when you were on the show?
Ah, yes! The first show I was on I finished third with a dollar--I won an attractive fax machine, I believe--because they had buzzer problems during my show to the point where they actually stopped tape in the middle of the show and changed everybody's buzzer out because mine wasn't working properly. So the good folks at Jeopardy! called me after that show taped and said that they thought that I really didn't get a fair chance, and so, when I came back, I was a four-time winner, could have been a five-time winner if I had wagered smart enough in the fifth game, but I got a trip to Spain out of it, so I'm not complaining.

Here's her official obituary, which gives some good info about her.  I love that she got to travel so much, especially with her J! winnings.  Her sister Kathryn, who also competed on J!, predeceased her, as did her parents, which makes this particularly lovely:

Quote

She is survived by numerous members of her chosen families including the Jeopardy! family, the MIT Club of Chicago, her trivia team, the Chicago Man City Fan Club, and her family here at Grace Lutheran Church in Evanston.

🤓 Really? I love it as I order a lot of stuff year round. I get credit for letting them delay delivery a few days and use that credit on Kindle books. Haven't made much use of the prime free movies, but they're available.

The free shipping more than pays for the cost for us - plus the streamer, and the occasional free Kindle Unlimited option (I'm a big reader, but physical books are hard for me these days). I know there are reasons not to use it, but as we get older, it becomes more and more useful for us.

I am an oddity, as I rarely order anything from Amazon, and when I do, I use a gift card.

An interview with Ken Jennings from CBS Sunday Morning.

Yes, thank you, @ProudMary!

A couple of tidbits I liked:

Quote

[KEN — STARTING AT 11:35 MINUTES] It’s not even a quiz show anymore; it’s a cultural institution. It’s Jeopardy!. It’s almost like it’s a public utility: You’ve got to be hooked up to water and gas and Jeopardy every night at 7 o’clock, or, you know, Mom’s gonna freak out.…

[KEN — STARTING AT 13:14 MINUTES] That’s really weird…to go from being a single Lego in the Jeopardy universe…

(youtu.be/j_6S1Jzibk0)

— although I hope in future interviews he'll change up the first quote sometimes to "Dad's…" or "Aunt Sally's…" or "Grampa Mark's gonna freak out."
But I'm sure he did not intend to diss any Moms for freaking out if Jeopardy! was preempted.

Not a mom, but I freak out because preemption is usually because of sportsball, which IMO should have its own channel and not preempt regular programming.

The problem is it does have its own channel, several in fact but for some reason the networks think we would also like to watch it on every main channel rather than our regular programming.

Why? because they're a bunch of imbeciles, that's why.

I guess this the best place to post this. I go to "The Jeopardy! Fan" web site weekdays to spoil myself. Andy hasn't posted anything since last Wednesday. I hope he is okay.

What?  I'm seeing everything I'd expect to see, including today's recap and the weekend editorial post.  Maybe try a different browser?  I do have to refresh to get the latest stuff, but I'm sure you've done that already.

Thanks. Not getting it on my computer, even if I close the window and open a new one doing a Google search. But I'm seeing it on my iPad. That's never happened before.

ETA: Not sure what I did poking around the site, but it's fixed now. 🤷‍♀️

A useful link when a site seems not to be working: https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/

I use that fairly frequently. Good recommendation!

Weird, I used the regular quote function and it didn't include @Driad's name. Tried both of them and same result.

Rereading up thread and just noticed this didn't start today, just didn't notice it before.

I'd enjoy some kind of a parody Emmy Show Special in which Keke, Ken, Pat, and Steve compete for Best Game Show Host,
with maybe Jane as the host of the fake show.

I bet Pat would be surprisingly quick with the one-liners.

ETA: I can't imagine Steve agreeing to be a contestant, but that makes me want to see it.

Colin Jost will be the host of Pop Culture Jeopardy!

https://www.msn.com/en-us/tv/news/colin-jost-announced-as-new-pop-culture-jeopardy-host-what-is-im-excited/ar-BB1qZ1dI

On Wednesday, July 31, the Saturday Night Live star was announced as the host of an all-new iteration of America's favorite gameshow: Jeopardy!

Jost, 42, will host Prime Video's Pop Culture Jeopardy!, which goes into production in August, and shared his response to the new gig in a perfectly timed statement. "What is: I'm excited."

Although the televised Primetime Emmy Awards are being held this coming Sunday evening (9/15), the Primetime Creative Arts Emmys were held this past weekend. Jeopardy! won for Outstanding Game Show.

Although Ken Jennings was nominated, the award for Outstanding Host of a Game Show was awarded to Pat Sajak. I don't think it was surprising that Emmy voters decided to give Sajak the award for his final season of hosting Wheel of Fortune, but I'm still disappointed for Ken. 😞

Just as info, this is the first Primetime Emmy that Sajak has received. Prior to 2023, the awards for Game Shows were relegated to the Daytime Emmys. Sajak had won two Daytime Emmys for hosting WOF back in 1993 and 1997, plus a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

You can see all of the weekend's winners here:

For some reason I remember watching one of those (I don't believe I ever did, so maybe it was a clip). Sajak and Alex were sitting next to each other and neither one was looking happy (in fact they looked ticked off). I don't remember who one, or if it was the lifetime achievement award.

Format For Road To 32nd Tournament Of Champions Announced

The format is still making my head spin. I'm posting an excerpt here, but you should look at the full piece for details.

The postseason format leading into the 32nd Tournament of Champions has been announced.

In a drastic cutback from the 31st ToC, fans will only get 2 weeks of Second Chance, feeding into a 2-week Champions Wildcard tournament.

This format was confirmed today on the Inside Jeopardy! podcast by Executive Producer Michael Davies.

The 2-week Champions Wildcard tournament will contain the 2 Second Chance advancees with 13 other non-qualifiers for the Tournament, playing in a “traditional” 15-player format with wild cards with the winner taking the last spot in the Tournament of Champions. How those 13 players will get selected was not announced.

New from The Jeopardy! Fan:

Pop Culture Jeopardy To Premiere December 4

Quote

Pop Culture Jeopardy! has its premiere date: December 4.

That date was announced today in an announcement from Prime Video; three episodes will release every week, with the $300,000 final presumed to be released on its own on February 26, 2025.

Wait. What?
"Prime video"?
I have it through a daughter but rarely use it.
Could this be a sign of a the times that Jeopardy! is finally entering the 21st century where, on days when there is breaking news or interfering weather, we won't have to hunt for short-lived Youtube videos that often give away FJ as soon as the clue is revealed?
Or will it just be for "Pop Culture"Jeopardy!, just like only Celebrity Jeopardy! is on ABC/Hulu?

JMO, of course, but I think it's the latter. I doubt that syndicated Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune are going anywhere. Like you, I wish there was an option for us to stream the show at our own convenience.

Y'know, I just don't care anymore. I don't care about the tournaments, either. Just give me J! the way it's supposed to be and stop trying to woo people who don't watch normal J!

I get what you're saying here, but personally, I'm OK with the spin-off versions. I love pop culture categories, so I look at this new show as an enjoyable side dish to the original entree.

I think it's a good idea to have Pop Culture Jeopardy! be hosted by someone other than Ken. If Colin Jost does well hosting PCJ!, I'd suggest that he might not be a bad fit to also host Celebrity Jeopardy! This is just my opinion because I think Ken is the perfect host for the original show, but I thought he seemed less comfortable hosting CJ!

We've fortunately found one source on Youtube that has been great. BUT, we've found sources before that have gone away. :( Our reception on our Jeopardy channel is bad, so even if we Tivo it, it sucks.

It's not like other broadcast shows aren't on the streamers (though...with a day's delay sometimes - or maybe that's just my early bedtime). I bet it will happen, as streamers become more like original TV.

The problem is that it's made by Sony rather than one of the main channels & they sell to the highest bidder in each market, hence all of the different channels people watch it on & no one streamer has or will get the rights to it because of that. Not many progs are like that & Sony will probably never sell it to just one of them without the price being outrageous.

I'm not knowledgeable about large business and industry, but I suppose at some point there could be divisions and mergers that happen to bring Jeopardy! to a streaming service?
