My iPhone7 won't even ring if the number calling is not in my address book. I get a Call Silenced message. I go to recent calls and the unknown call is in red. I press the info button and look for a voice mail. If there is no voicemail I don't reply and usually block the number.

The only problem I've had is that sometimes nurses or dr assistants will use their own phone to make calls to patients so number comes up red. But they will almost always leave a voice mail so I know who it is and then return the call.

I don't think I set that up so I guess it is part of the phone's basic programming. I do like that feature.

Oh and I don't have a landline, haven't for probably 10 years or so and haven't really missed it at all.

I've just recently stopped with a landline (that I didn't use anyway). I had one landline spam caller that would not stop, no matter how many ways I tried to block it. I had my answering machine set up to block most spam, but they kept getting through. Now I get a lot of texts from places that have my cell number.

@oliviabenson  My I pad is dying.  Which do you like better.  The I pad or your new Chrome?   It’s just that I’m used to the I pad and like it.  I lik the size and features.  I’m on the fence.  My I pad gets very hot, then crashes for awhile.  Maybe it will explode any minute.  I’m afraid to charge it up.    I hate to go to the Apple store also to transfer everything.

Back early in the year I would get some really early morning calls from a doctor or doctor's office when I was having a lot of issues with my vasculitis (thankfully much more under control now).  I am *not* an early riser so would have to have the phone near my bed and be ready to lunge for it.

Now though I just try to keep an eye out for the little telephone symbol on my cell.  I haven't had a landline in ages but I do miss the bright red blinking light that told me I had a message.  Why isn't there an app for that?

Yesterday I was in the grocery store and since I only had 3 items went to the express lane, which I later noticed was also the accessibility lane.

The customer ahead was in a wheel chair. She was reaching behind the chair to take items out of a bag strapped behind her chair and put them on the counter for checkout. Then I realized she had another bag full of items. I thought about asking if I could help, but before I did a man behind me in line just rushed forward and proceeded to dump her items from the bag to the check out. If I were her, I would have found this scarey.

The reason for my hesitation in offering help to her is because I have been taught that just because you are in a wheel chair doesn't mean you are incapable. But now I am questioning my thoughts on that.

I have an iPhone 7 Plus, and I had to set that up. Maybe someone did it for you? Or maybe it is a default for the 7 and not the 7 Plus?
Regardless, when I'm expecting a call from a medical or delivery person who I can't easily call back, I turn off that feature by:

  1. Settings
  2. Phone
  3. Silence Unknown Callers [change On to Off]

Then, of course, reverse the steps to turn it back on after you've got your expected call from an unknown number.

This sounds so much like what I just went through with my iPhone 7 Plus that I just have to ask:
Did you switch to a new, heavier, faster charging cord?
If so, go back to a skinny, slower cord, and see if that fixes it.

Of course, if that's what it is, it is because your iPad is an older model, and, like me with my old model iPhone, it means we should be prepared to upgrade sooner rather than later.

I found a use for the expensive fast charger! I can charge my Chromebook through the c port. At least the charger will be used versus collecting dust! The charger that came with the Chromebook is huge/old school one.

It's great when things just work out. Be careful with the quick charger, my phone gets a bit warm when I use mine. The Chromebook may do the same.

We took the landline that came with the internet because my husband was still doing some work for a company back home. It made it simpler for him to call them or take (scheduled) calls, otherwise it just sits there and I check the messages once in a while.

Just FYI, there's a way to set up a "shortcut" on the iPhone to turn on/off the "silence unknown callers" feature.  Then you can put the shortcut icon on your main screen and save a few steps when you need to turn it on or off (like when you're expecting a call back from a doctor's office).  I couldn't tell you exactly how I did it now but Google led me to step-by-step instructions that worked like a charm.  I'm not sure why that's not included with the "Starter Shortcuts" - it's the only shortcut I've ever actually used.

I’d stick with an iPad. Much lighter and easier to carry around and the screen resolution is awesome. Just my opinion.

What do you mean by "transfer everything?"  If you have an iCloud account, everything's saved there and is automatically transferred once you log in with your new device.  You might have to log back into all your apps, but that's it.  I don't need to do a thing whenever I get a new phone (I've had iPhones since 2012).  That said, I'm team laptop since with an external mouse since I prefer to navigate that way rather than the touch screen when I'm using a keyboard.  Though you might be okay if you already have an external mouse for it and don't use the iPad for anything else other than movies, email and this (and other) forums.

Mine is behaving mostly okay, battery is struggling, but I’m hoping for an 11” OLED screen next year.  Whenever they’ve announced new iPads there haven’t been enough improvements over my 5 year old (working) device to convince me.

Last time I changed my phone it was simple to transfer everything to the new one, I just started the transfer and left them next to each other for a few hours.

You're right. I'm trying to figure out what is best to buy going forward.

I just go for secondhand. But I also find secondhand shopping to be super-fun, even if I don't need anything. I always wanted a pair of the classic Frye harness boots, but didn't buy them, at first because they are pricy and later because of vegan reasons.* A few years ago, I found a pair in my size and in fabulous condition at a charity store in Philadelphia for $40 and I am still elated!

*There are vegans who are opposed to using animal-derived products at all, regardless of where and how they were obtained. I am not one of them; I didn't throw out what I already had, but I stopped buying new stuff.

ETA: No one can do everything, as far as this kind of thing goes, at least not without driving yourself completely crazy in the process. I have to remind myself of this all the time because I have an issue with "completeness" or something (based in OCD tendencies, which I am working on), and that anything I do do is better than nothing and that it is always meant to be helpful, not harmful.

My son just told me he wants to be a dinosaur (again) this Halloween.  I think his costume still fits. It easily goes over a coat so no worries about strategic costuming.  Lol.  You really need to start thinking about costumes now rather than September…things sell out.

If there was one food I would be allowed to eat without gaining weight/high cholesterol/diabetes, etc....

I might have to lean toward a Philly soft pretzel with a nice juice hot dog inside of it.  Or a pretzel dog

I’d have tons of ice cream - apple cinnamon - from my favourite neighbourhood ice cream parlour.  In a house-made waffle bowl.  Or maybe a brownie sundae with vanilla, topped with chocolate sauce, strawberries and whipped cream.

My husband is heading towards retirement and is feeling a little anxious and worried about the future. Anyway last night we found out a young family friend has just lost his job.  The company he worked for just folded.  It's a comfort to him that the job loss was no fault of his, but it still means he's out of work with a new baby and a mortgage.

Not that we are taking comfort from someone else's misfortune but this was a timely reminder that  having to worry about job loss and job hunting and applying for EI are all in the rear view window for us now.  And that does make retirement a lot easier to take.

Ugh, I have been thinking about that kind of thing a lot. Laid off in December, relied on freelance work and/or unemployment until July (mostly not, as the freelance job paid me very well), took a full-time job that I thought would be good, but that I hated, and quit that after 2 weeks because I knew I would -- and didn't want to -- be miserable for 50+ hours a week again. Luckily, I was able to go back to the freelance job (which I really like) that I left for the full-time one, but now if that dries up, I am out of luck as far as unemployment goes.

Pizza.

Everything else, and there would be a lot members of the everything else club, would be a distant second to pizza. Pizza gets the nod for not only being delicious but terrible for me, but also because of the huge range styles and toppings that are covered by the single word "pizza".

Yes, that's what I love about it, too -- practically endless options, depending on what I'm in the mood for.  I don't have a "go-to" pizza in terms of toppings.  My single favorite topping is Italian sausage, but I'll combine that with so many different things each time I order/make one, or do something different entirely.  For example, one of my favorites at a local pizza joint is topped with grilled chicken and roasted red peppers, then mixed greens and avocado slices are added after it comes out of the oven, and chipotle sauce is drizzled over it.  And another place has a great seafood pizza with clams, shrimp, and scallops (and lots of garlic and basil), plus another favorite with goat cheese, chicken, and caramelized onions, topped after cooking with arugula & a house-made spicy olive oil.

The only thing I tend to avoid is the traditional red sauce; I'll happily eat it if served to me (as long as the pizza isn't drowning in it), but if I'm making/choosing my own, I use - depending on the toppings - olive oil, pesto, or a white sauce instead.

Deep dish or thick crust I will not eat.  I prefer thin crust, but I'll eat regular if someone offers it to me.

It's more like what toppings are off the list than which ones are my preferences.  I did try a pizza with the pineapple, and I didn't care for it, but that doesn't mean that it couldn't be done in a way that I did like.

I had one sometime last summer that had figs involved along with a bunch of other stuff, and I thought that was interesting and tasty. I think there was goat cheese involved.

As I'm living in the imaginary world where I'm eating pizza every day, I would most likely incorporate some deep dish or thick crust pizza into the mix. In the case of the thick crust pizza, it needs to be a really good crust. It can't just be a big chewy square with some sauce and cheese on top.

Oh, yes. And prosciutto and then some arugula thrown on at the end. I have that bookmarked. It's very good.

But when I went looking for it, I found this, which looks very easy and quick, thanks to the fig jam, which I have. All I'm missing is the goat cheese:

1 pizza crust, uncooked

2/3 cup fig jam

1 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

3-4 strips prosciutto torn into bite-size pieces

2 ounces goat cheese crumbled

Preheat oven to 500 degrees (preferably with a pizza stone inside).

Roll out the pizza dough as thinly as you can into a rectangle or oval on a silicone mat or piece of parchment paper.

Spread the fig jam all over it, leaving about 1/2 inch around the edge.  Sprinkle with the mozzarella cheese, scatter the prosciutto across the top and finish with the crumbled goat cheese.

Place the pizza on the pizza stone and cook for 7-9 minutes, until the cheese is bubbling and browning on top.

This place is a bad influence.

When I lived in Ohio, a local pizzeria had the greatest pizza I've ever had. I swear the white sauce was laced with heroin or something because it was addictive. I look for recipes now and then but nothing seems right.

This is because you've never had Ferentino's pizza in Lake Forest, IL.
I've had a few various pizzas since moving to Rochester NY two+ years ago, but the sauce was not something I would have liked either.

I wish I'd had a slice for dinner a few times when I still lived there.
I only got pizza when one of my kids was visiting.

I suspect the secret may be some sugar in the tomato sauce, to take the acid down.
