It's sunny and 68 degrees.  Despite the tall tales of all of SoCal having fierce winds, the wind is currently a nice gentle breeze of 7 MPH if that.  The tree leaves are barely moving.

It's 65 here and the winds double yours, but so far so good.

The wind chill here right now is –4ºF / -20ºC.

I have an appointment tomorrow morning when it will be the same.
I have a bag in my car with a blanket, extra hat, extra gloves, & extra socks.
It's sort of the opposite of a go back for a fire.

ETA: Not supposed to even go *up to* freezing until Sunday,
and not supposed to go a couple of degrees above freezing until a week from Wednesday.

Back in the '70s, a guy who grew up in Alberta Canada told me that he was told as a kid that when it first got this cold in the winter, to go outside in a t-shirt, and then you'd be warm the rest of the winter.

Today I warmed up vacuuming.
I have a quick hot bath every night before bed. I'm still warm when I wake up in the morning.

Here in Iowa, in my neck of the woods, it is currently -10 degrees Fahrenheit, and our wind chill is -33 degrees Fahrenheit.

Meanwhile, the southern U.S. is going to get full on snowstorms and ice - and some areas of that part of the country will see more snow with this one storm than my area has seen thus far this entire winter

What the hell, Mother Nature?

From wunderground.com:

  • * IMPACTS...Bitterly cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero will cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... This is a potentially hazardous situation to be outdoors. If you must be outside, be sure to cover all exposed skin. Frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less with apparent temperatures of 15 below zero or colder.

The fact that this man pursued me when he’s over 15 years older than me (17 to be exact) says more about issues he has as opposed to anything I did wrong by refusing to date him and not talking to him once he was pushing his romantic interest. If he was a desirable partner and knew how to interact with women, he wouldn’t even be worried about asking out a woman almost 20 years younger than him. I know plenty of people think age gaps are no big deal or I shouldn’t care about them, but they do matter to me, and I’m sticking to my belief on this and will only seek out men with a 5-10 year age difference in either direction.

I don't know if they have "issues" but men wanting younger women is a tale as old as time. Some may have issues but others just like  younger.

I’m almost 40 and can’t stand all the comments online from people my age and younger crying that they are burned out from working, and they can’t believe they spend so much of their life doing it and wish there were more than this. Like they’re shocked the world doesn’t exist to entertain them and coddle to them to make sure they can do whatever they please all day, every day.

I'm older than you, and I feel the exact same way the younger people do. Well, I don't expect the world to entertain me nonstop, but I have plenty of days where I wonder, Is this all there is?  I work 40 hours a week, and then my days off are spent getting groceries and doing more chores.  I'm so tired. As I get older and witness more attitudes similar to yours, I realize that nothing will ever change, and it makes me sad.

It's 13 degrees Fahrenheit here right now. With wind chills it's 9. By morning it should be near zero. We had 8 inches of snow last night. It won't get up to freezing here until Sunday too. At least the high pressure is keeping the storm to our South away from us.

Oddly my hummingbirds don’t migrate and it’s below freezing. Their feeder froze overnight. I have extra feeders ready to go so they always have access to semi-warm food. Changed it out at 7AM. Gave the squirrels an extra ration of peanuts and am keeping the bird feeder full. I even bought some mealy worms to supplement them hoping that the extra food and protein will help them get through this cold snap/ snow event more easily.

I sympathize with the kids. We all work too much and 2 days "off" for 5 days of misery is appalling. The ""s are because, as noted upstream, at least one of those days is full of errands and house maintenance that would only take a few minutes at lunch or coffee break but snowball during the week. If you really love your job and co-workers, I salute you. For me, working has been the thing I resent for taking me away from real life. The few months to retirement can't go quickly enough.

Agreed. I hear about how people in other countries have a far better work/life balance and we desperately need something like that here.

It also doesn't help that al ot of people are working jobs that don't seem to reward their loyalty or hard work with anything worthwhile, like decent wages or good benefits or things of that sort. Corporations are getting more of a break than your average workers are nowadays.

I feel bad for the "kids nowadays" but it wasn't that different for the average worker when I worked either, which ended about 9 years ago. We older people just didn't used to complain about it as much. We accepted it as part of our lot in life or just a fact of life like death and taxes. If anything, bosses and companies were more likely to crack the whip and be stingy with raises and benefits in some fields, especially with women. Maybe if you had a union it was a little better, but most people haven't had the benefit of those for a long time now.

It's been a long, long time since things were that much easier, and when they were, they definitely weren't easier for women in general. In many of my jobs I was expected to work frequent overtime and if I had personal issues that made that difficult, too bad. The only women that were given any slack at all with that were mothers and I wasn't one. And even then it wasn't much.

Also pensions have been going away for a long time and decent retirement and health benefits too. My husband never got any retirement benefits and actually had to rely on coverage through my health insurance because he never got much as an automotive service writer/manager. If they offered anything the premiums were sky high. This issue is one I'd say is getting a lot of attention because the young people today have higher expectations, but it's really nothing all that new.

Also, and this is something I noticed in my last few years on the job is that the younger employees (mostly Millennials) were given more perks and advantages than the older ones. They were seen as more desirable by management so they were catered to in terms of being given preferential treatment for promotions and raises, even when older employees were more deserving. And being the exec. assistant in my department I saw everything that was going on and this effect was striking to me.

We older workers knew that management would love to get rid of us and in my company's case they found "creative" ways to do that. In my case they terminated me after I fell in their parking lot thanks to their negligence after construction was done. I was on workers' comp. but they didn't care, they just decided to terminate me with no justification, which in my state is OK. They just didn't factor in that it's against the law to terminate someone collecting workers' comp. so I won a lawsuit against them for that. And I knew many other older, valuable employees that were also terminated for no reason. And this was a big Fortune 500 product company, too. A household name. And they got away with it. My law firm told me it would be very difficult to prove what they were doing even though there was a LOT of evidence.

Anyway, my point is it's not just young people that have something to bitch about in the working world.

I forgot to add that my husband had to work 11 hour days without lunch for decades with no extra pay. It was just what was expected in his position (service writer and later assistant manager) in car dealership service departments. Talk about lack of work/life balance! When he was laid off with most of his department during the 2008 recession they hired young people to do the job but paid them less and didn't expect them to know anything about cars. And they weren't expected to work 11 hour days either. When he worked it out by the hour he was actually paid less than they were. He is still shocked by how little the service people know about cars anymore.

Wealthy Asian countries are HORRIBLE when it comes to work life balance.  That's one of the reasons why the birthrate is so low in those countries.

Was there ever a golden time when work life balance was an actual thing?  Because while I certainly don't blame anyone for striving for that I do blame them if they honestly think they are the first generation who worked hard and feel hard done by.  And this is what I see and it just makes me shake my head.

Some countries do it better than others.  We're not great in North America but places like South Korea, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore are way worse.  Top that up with unaffordable housing. I think one of my cousins only moved out in her late 30s because of money (okay, it's partially cultural, but she basically isn't ever going to marry).

I'll never forget the sweet young thing installing my new alarm system who was very shocked when I told him I wanted him to make it work fully.  He was all I don't know how to fix that I'll have to call my boss and was very upset by the idea.  I went think of me as your grandmother.  Would you leave her with only a halfway functioning alarm system?  He was completely flabbergasted by having the situation presented that way.

About 7 or 8 years ago my now-married daughter with 2 kids tried dating a nice enough and persistent coworker who was at least 15 years older. They shared the goal of wanting to find a marriage partner and have kids. But when he leaned in for a kiss she realized she was not physically attracted to him at all, and that was the end of it.
Anyway, sometimes an older man just took a while to get to the point of wanting to marry and have kids, so a younger woman is one way to remedy that.
I hope he either found the right person or decided to stay single. I'll ask her sometime about his fate.

I love my job and like my co-workers (especially since I work from home and rarely see them, heh), but a five-day, 40-hour norm (with many expected to work more than that, even without any semblance of proper pay, benefits, or even respect and loyalty, in exchange) is ridiculous.  The U.S. system sucks (on pretty much every level at this point, but certainly when it comes to employment).  Good for all those out there saying so, personally resisting as much as they can get away with, and agitating for change, whatever their age.

The bold nearly took me out.🤣🤣🤣 Yes looks do factor. Maybe that is why that guy is hitting on @Cloud9Shopper. The women in his age group may not appeal to him. But too many men think they can have their choice of younger women and that is not true....at all.

As for Cleveland weather, yes we can have sub zero temps. Christmas 2022 was bitterly cold but our weather has been really fickle the past few years. This feels like the first winter that has been CONSISTENTLY cold in years

On this topic I just heard today that my daughter's FIL got laid off yesterday.  Worked for the same company for almost 40 years, he's undergoing cancer treatment (but has taken almost no time off because of it) and they walked him out of the building yesterday along with a few dozen others.  So it's not personal.  So that makes it alright I guess.

I'm about an hour from you, and I'm over this bitter cold. I've been enjoying watching videos of people who never get snow, playing in it, though. :) Like in New Orleans. Someone I follow, posted a video of her friends enjoying snow at the beach, in Florida, too.

The one good thing about the super cold weather is that it tends to kill off nuisance and disease-carrying bugs whose populations have increased during years of mild winters.

So funny, this is almost word for word what my husband said earlier when we realized it's -14c (feels like -20) out there and I was not happy.

Wow...and here we're whimpering about walking from parking lots to bldgs in 17° weather. At least the wind has died down... that's the worst! Metro DC hasn't had cold weather like this in a long time. When I was a kid in NY, and walked to school, we wore long wool coats, boots, wool scarves & mittens. Today? The clothes just aren't warm enough.

I was plenty warm today in NYC with a down jacket, a down vest, and a hooded sweatshirt.  But on the subway everyone was taking up two seats with puffiness.

Yes, as a kid I had wool coats and sweaters.  We didn't have down coats till the '70s.  At one point sheepskin coats were popular.

Thick knee socks, roomy boots (so feet don't get cold), lined pants, thin-but-fuzzy turtleneck, mid-weight pullover hoodie, fake-down jacket with a hood, gloves, and wool scarf.
I am so glad I finally bought a new coat on sale for just $30 at Burlington a couple of weeks ago. My old warm coat is 25 years old. As a clerk at the bank mentioned when we were talking about the cold weather, the technology for manufacturing warm coat materials has changed a lot in the last 25 years. It isn't the perfect coat, but it's warmer. I mainly bought it because it had deep pockets with flaps on the front where I could safely and conveniently put my phone and not have my phone (or my old bony hands) scratched by those horrible chunky zippers all the other coats on the rack had. Plus the price. If I find my perfect coat next year, I won't guilt myself into not buying it because I just bought one this year.

I always cheap out on winter boots.  Not because I don't want to spend $$$ but mainly because I am a hard size to fit and I loathe shopping for footwear.  I usually end up buying the first decent looking pair that actually fits.  And eventually end up with soakers.  The pair I have now did go two full winters before that started to happen so I guess I should be glad.

We woke up to temps at 4 degrees this morning but no snow :( the snow that happened days ago is still on the ground though.

I don’t know if I prefer being cold or hot. I did purchase myself a nice down coat this winter with a faux fur hood. At school the kids are expected to go outside and play if the temps are above 17 degrees and it gets cold standing in one place watching Kindergartners run around trying not to hurt themselves.

Standing around is rough in cold weather.
When my daughter was in high school she used to run outside for track when it was 16ºF.
If it's sunny and there's no wind, it's okay.
But the opposite is also true, IMO.

I decided I wanted to move away from cold winters 30 years ago, but here I am, currently 15ºF with wind chill 5ºF.
The next 10 days will be in the 20s, so still below freezing, but not as bad.
But February is generally no picnic — literally.

They're no longer available, but these are similar:

I prefer to be cold rather than hot. But I live in the South in a condo on the west side of the building right next to a parking lot. Next time I move, I will ask where the sun sets before buying anything, especially if I'm buy in February.  It starts getting hot here in March or April and stays hot through November.

It is nice when the weather is cold because my place does stay warm even in the winter.  But in the summer, I suffer and my electric bill suffers.

These past couple of days have been really cold in my building here in NYC (I'm in a pre-war coop built around 1927).  The heat in my bedroom is okay but there's some kind of a draft coming from my kitchen window which I can feel in the living area and though I've put up a "thermal" window shade and put one of those draft "snakes" on the sill I can feel cold air walking around.  I went down to our lobby to look for the super and had to leave after a few minutes.  I told one of the doormen later that I don't know how they are standing it right now.

It's supposed to get a little better tomorrow, I hope so.  I will be going to a reception at the art club tomorrow but can always come and go when I want.  I had my wellness visit with my doctor last week, and am so glad it wasn't this week!   I do have a space heater made by Dreo that's sitting on a small wooden table next to my desk, I do turn it off at night though.  It has the tip over safety feature.

Meanwhile the falling paint in my bedroom turned into a major ordeal when I found out it contained lead (I guess from the older layers).  My super has done the patching (he is certified) but still has to plaster and paint and we are going to replace the bed frame and put in a new mattress.   He took away the carpet and will refinish the floor there which looks good at least.  He is a really nice guy but of course a lot of other things come up that delay things and I am already working out mentally how to arrange fixing the rest of the apartment which is not as bad but will have to be done soon.

He knows a contractor who works in the building and I will have to have them come to paint the living area and later work on the bathroom - only I can't be here for all that so will have to wait on it until I can go away starting maybe in May.  It was so awful throwing out nearly everything from the bedroom but after all the paint chips and dust all over I had to.  It does look better though at least but it was hard.

The rest will need a major de-clutter also though he and all the staff are great about taking things away.  Still I've been so preoccupied with all this that it's been hard to concentrate on everything else.

P.S.
I just noticed the same brand (BOGS) also has these models that include “Ice Traction” under “Core Benefits,” but they look a bit stiffer, and I have some sort of arthritis in one foot, but if I was still able to walk briskly for an hour I'd at least try them.
The "Tall" is not on sale (yet?) and the "Mid" is not as big of a discount as the BOGS in my first post without the "ice traction," but for me, if a shoe or boot doesn't hurt and is functional, $100-$200 isn't terrible.

ETA:
I just noticed the “Ice Traction” boot doesn't have as wide of a toe area…

07.jpg
…as the ones I have…

so I'm no longer tempted to get them. 😉
