Selling The Big Easy - General Discussion

That was the country one?     I couldn't believe someone with little kids would want a home with the open stair treads, and next to all of that water.   To me, that water equals alligators and snakes.      I also hated that master bath.

I also wondered if that house was on septic?   Because giant events and septic tanks could turn out to be bad.   It was also pretty far out of town too.     (Great sleuthing on the first house).      I wonder if appearing on the show was a way for the 'buyer' to publicize her event business?

(Million Dollar House Hunters-on FYI network.    That one had rich people touring mansions, in L.A., and Palm Springs, and I read that the 'buyers' were all actors.    After seeing the clothing, and the bizarre characters that were always the eccentric buyers, I figured that one was all fake)

I hate the staging that they featured tonight, the second episode with that apartment looked decent already.    I think the two tone painted cabinet idea was hideous.     In the first episode I think the dining nook was perfect where it was originally.     I'm really tired of blinding white kitchens.

I hated the second 'sale' house.   Was that the Uptown house?    The basement with the wonky walls was hideous.

Edited by CrazyInAlabama

I found the second house in Uptown. It is still for sale, and guess who the listing agent is - Brittany. It was listed on July 14, 2020 for !.2 million, dropped to 1.089, and is now listed for $990,000. Brittany said on the show it was listed for $650,000. What a bunch of BS.

On the second episode last night the two doctors were looking for their “forever home” for their family. At the end, after they gave their reasons for choosing the house, the husband casually mentioned that he’s in fellowship so he doesn’t know where he’ll be in two years.  Why would you go through all the stress of moving your family into a house, let the kids settle in, only to face the prospect of having to do it all again in two years.  Then I read a lot of the comments here and figured it doesn’t matter anyway if it’s mostly fake.

Can't wait for Aidy Bryant do Brittany on SNL.

I spent a few minutes wondering if maybe she WAS Aidy Bryant playing a ridiculous character and this was some new kind of SNL/HGTV crossover prank. 😂

Watched the table jump as the pregnant ER Doc Wife swift kicked him to shut up...

You could tell he was a reluctant participant....

The show may have helped them get a suitable RENTAL...

Even worse, why buy a house in a hurricane prone area, then try to sell it two years later?  Almost anything could happen to the real estate market in two years, and  I hope the 'buyers' realize that selling a house means you pay all of the commissions, and some closing costs.      Rent, and then when it's time to move on, pack up and go.      My guess is staying in New Orleans isn't his favorite idea.   I hated the bedrooms on the second house, with the funky shaped rooms.

I finally found the 1st house the doctor couple looked at. It was NOT for sale. It is in Lakeview and is a fairly new build. They said on the show it was 3 years old and 2400 sq. ft. It was built in 2016 and has 2320 sq. ft. It does have 4 BRs and 3 BAs as stated on the show. It last sold in March 2018 for $525,000. Brittany said it was listed for $575,000, and that's what the couple offered and they bought it..

I'm still taken aback that Brittany would look into a camera and tell bald face lies.

  • Love 2

There is something really wrong with this show and with Brittany.  What I’ve found out about so many of these shows is that they are all pretty much a bunch of lies.  When I watch Selling Mansions, where they give you the addresses of the houses, I always look them up and 90% of the time, the house that the “couple”  choose were never sold and all three shown houses were still on the market.

The house in the Broadmoor section purchased by the single mom with four kids is back on the market.

The house that was featured on French Street supposedly purchased by the doctors is actually their home that they are trying to sell.  Look at the pictures on various listing for the property and you will see a picture of them on the wall in the room with the teepee holding the baby.  Just another fabrication and a way to get your house featured on tv and sold.

The  "single mom with 4 kids" (probably not true) didn't buy that house. It was last sold on November 11, 2018. Brittany's company listed it July 14, 2020 with an asking price of 1.2 million, then dropped to 1.089 million, and is now on the market for $990,000. Brittany claimed on the show it was listed for $650,000, and because it had been on the market for so long and it had some dated features, she got her a deal at $590,000. Straight up lies.

Because we all watch reality TV, even while criticizing it (e.g. Housewives, Honey Boo Boo, John & Kate, etc.), producers are lulled into thinking we are stupid. And they pull the nonsense like they've done with this show.

In my first post I stated that I thought Brittany might be a good realtor despite her mindless babbling and twirling. I take it back.

”normalize” outrageous home prices to all us bumpkins

This resonates with me. Many people have accepted the suggestion that they have to have luxurious finishes and a lot of space. They acquire a lot of debt to do so. And perfectly fine properties are destroyed to make way for these huge homes, while healthy mature trees are removed and so.much.stuff goes into landfills. Watershed areas are impacted, as well as the character of old neighborhoods. It seems like wretched excess.

  • Love 11

Pasdetrois, where I live there is an older area of the city where the lots are big (100' X 200' average), and there are large live oaks as well as other mature trees.  Within the past 5 or so years, more and more people are buying the older houses and tearing them down, then building HUGE houses on those large lots.  The huge houses require that the beautiful trees have to be removed, and what was once a main attraction to the area is disappearing.  When I say huge houses, these are 4,000+ sq foot monsters that are 2 or 3 stories and tower over their smaller next door neighbors.  They also go from side to side on the large lots.  I am baffled as to their reasoning of wanting to be in a neighborhood with character when they are destroying the very character that attracted them in the first place.  Oh, and 99% of these new builds all look alike - white or off white, with black trim windows, barn doors, the Joanna Gaines "farmhouse" look, etc.  If you came home after a few drinks you'd have trouble figuring out which one was yours.

You’re KIDDING. I spent a good amount of time just staring at her during one segment because her blush/bronzer wasn’t blended at ALL and it looked horrible.

I was just popping in here to see if I was the only one who found her annoying.  I wanted to watch for New Orleans but this show is awful and she just really thinks she’s all that and a bag of chips when she just isn’t.

The houses aren’t that great. The staging segments are boring and they don’t show enough New Orleans uniqueness, it could be set anywhere.

Yes to all of this.  And, the stereotypical music annoys me, too.

I've got my pen and paper ready to take notes on what lies she'll be peddling tonight. I think some of the houses she visits must belong to acquaintances and aren't on the market, because I can't find them in recently sold or for sale. I don't think the show is using card carrying actors since the people seem so uncomfortable. I had such high hopes for this show. Now it's turned into a game of finding the fabrications.

  • Love 4

The first one they looked at that was not a family house.      The entire back yard is that pool, and pool deck.     It's also still for sale.    The downstairs is cute, but the upstairs is awful.

The second episode, I couldn't believe that Brittany's associate said the people and their kids should swim in the river.    With the homes on the water, I could just imagine what a rainy period will do to that peaceful looking water, and what will crawl out of it.

Since the second episode is of two people selling in that neighborhood that they want to stay in, I wonder if one or both are the properties they're selling?   Like the two doctors that were supposed to be buying a house, and one they were shopping for was actually their home that was for sale (that's why you don't buy a house when you know you're moving in a couple of years.   You may not be able to sell quickly, or for what you want for the house).

Tuned in for a minute, Brittany looked a hot mess and there was an awesome cut to avoid seeing her actually getting out of the car and onto the lawn. The Scooby gang were going to do some staging to minimize an alleged misuse of tile. But it was either click or zzzzzz, not sure what happened next.

Did I hear them say the purchase of the house they chose is contingent on the sale of the home they live in? If so, I doubt that a seller would be open to a "deal" on the price of the house they want to buy.

I found the house the couple who lived in Covington supposedly put an offer on. It's for sale, 100 days on the market, for $600,000 that's a $25,000 price drop from original listing price.

It is on Woodvine Court as stated on the show. They said there was a community pool, and there is.

My guess is Brittany is just finding people to pretend to look for a house.

(edited)

The second hose in Covington on Magnolia Lane is not for sale. It last sold on 9/23/18 for $271,950. Brittany said it was an older home that needed updates. The current structure was built in 2019! Show said it is listed for $499,000. Realtor.com gives it an estimate of a little over $503,000 and Zillow estimates around $498,000.

ETA: Okay, found the house sold on September 18, 2020. and was listed by Brittany's company, so it could have been for sale at the time of filming.

Just watched a couple of episodes - the couple wanting the pool and to be close to gators/water and the couple expecting the baby.  I guess I missed the season.  I was hoping for more historic homes, but this was just Selling the Big Easy Suburbs that seemed all over the place with staging segments thrown in.  I appreciate the short running time, but I think I’ll stick to Hometown. Going to go upthread and read about the LIES and detective work in detail.  🙂

I was so looking forward to this show.  True house porn.  Last night.....if I wanted to see vanilla McMansions I could watch regular House Hunters.  Show me me a shotgun cottage in the midst of things...that would be Selling The Big Easy

Maybe I have watched too many movies - that may be the reason I get hives when I see people like the Hunters last night talking about swimming in the water.  As said above thread, I wonder what would come crawling out of the water.

Definitely alligators will be in those bayou waters.

That comment was a true WTF moment. Several of my childhood homes in LA/MS backed up to creeks and bayous. We used to play "Baptism" in one, with a keen eye toward leeches, cotton-mouths (water moccasins), snapping turtles and of course gators.

After Katrina there was a great real estate push to "north of the river" where there is less chance of flooding. I thought that some of the suburban homes were weird-looking  on the interior, but the grounds were beautiful.

The show vastly overestimates the audience's interest in Brittany and her team.

Brittany is basically an unattractive woman who's trying too hard to be perky and cool. Her team members are just boring. It's annoying that so much time is wasted "introducing" the team every week and then having to watch them "stage" some irrelevant property. If that time were used to show the home buyers another house it might save the show. As it is, I don't see it being picked up for another season unless HGTV is desperate.

I don't care how physically attractive she is, to me her personality's annoying and her skills (on the show) are limited.  I feel the same way about Christina and Allison Victoria.  The Scott brothers do seem to bring skills to the table.

I meant personality and skills as well. I don't get why the Scott brothers get a pass. They're just as band when it comes to bland HGTV design. Maybe even worse.

By unattractive I don't mean simply her physical appearance, although she dresses like a Mardi Gras clown. She acts totally wired and while she may know her market well--she certainly must to be successful--she doesn't come across that way. She comes across as a "know-it-all" who's actually a ditz who's trying to be cutesy but failing in a big way. Why does she need a "team" to suggest homes for her to show potential buyers? Is she too lazy or too self-important to do the research herself?

The only "skills" the Scott brothers bring to the table are acting the part of a realtor and contractor. The bros are actors following a script.

Hah, especially since so far at least 2 of the homes picked by her team were her company's listing.

The potential "buyers" mostly seem so uncomfortable on camera. I've noticed that whatever they want in a home, she just happens to find one. So, she has a home she wants showcased, and tells the "buyers" ask for these things. Example, the couple where the lady says she wants a pool (fine), then says heated pool, then a heated salt water pool. That's a lot to ask for, but voila - miracle maker Brittany finds a home with a heated salt water pool!

My husband says the fakery might be tolerable if she came across as a likeable person, but she doesn't.

Brittany says in promos and the show's intro she specializes in big New Orleans homes. Her agency, Godwyn & Stone (she and her husband are co-owners), currently has 27 listings ranging from houses priced $128,500 to the Covington house on the show listed at $1,189,000. There are 2 lots listed, 1 in Harvey for $85,000 and 5 acres in New Orleans for $8,900,000. Most of the listings are not all that big and spectacular. Somehow I think this listing in New Orleans with 3 bedrooms, 1 bath, 935 sq. ft. for sale at $175,000 won't be featured on the show. 😉

I live in Baton Rouge, and I was looking forward to watching this series.  I watched 2 of them, and have now erased the series from my DVR.  I'll check in here every once in a while for the comments.  If I went to an open house and Brittany was the agent there, she would be the last realtor I would call to find a house.  She would drive me nuts within 5 minutes.
