Wow, so according to that article, it's probably not even just a couple of episodes in L.A. Honestly, even if I didn't consider NYC and the Arconia integral to the show - which I do -, L.A. is one of the places I'm least interested in exploring...

And while I approve of Meryl staying on, the cast is getting really crowded, particularly with someone like Longoria.

I'm ok with Silicon Valley dude and don't know the other additions to the cast, but they already have fantastic other side characters I wish we'd see more of, like Uma, plus my favorite police detective, etc. Or even revisit the houseplant homies... Sigh.

I agree with you on all points.  NY-ers used to get criticized for living in a bubble where they saw NY as the center of the universe and everywhere else was either an insignificant or non-existent appendage to them, but I personally think TV execs and actors based in LA are even more guilty of that as evidenced here.

I don't know why shows have to progress from "fun" and "different" to overkill in just a few seasons anymore.  This show may have jumped the shark with Eva Longoria for me.  But we'll see.  It may sound like more than it will turn out to be.

I imagine that they are going to encounter the enbiggened cast on a movie set, in the actors/stunt  guild, or some similar place where they end up investigating the murder.

i too think they should have stayed closer to home, but I can see the attraction of the bigger sandbox.

I'm wondering if we're mis-interpreting and the articles are over-emphasizing the phrase "added to the cast".  I think some of these could be very brief appearances.

Still waiting for news of Scott Bakula.

Good point, particularly as they introduced two of them with the identical phrase about the character being integral to the twists and turns etc. I can't imagine Longoria being in the same category though.

Meanwhile, I'm getting my Uma* fix unexpectedly as I've started watching the first season of Feud.

*Yes, I really need to memorize the actress's name! I did look her up on Wikipedia the other day and noticed they listed her appearance on OMITB as "(first season year)-2023", as opposed to something like "ongoing", so I really think the whole season will take place far away from the Arconia, NY, and our beloved weirdos within.

Brief appearances or not that's a lot of people.  It still feels like overkill to me.

I was basically neutral on her until I saw her on "Searching for Mexico" on CNN doing a culinary tour to discover the cuisine of her heritage.  I really wanted to like her but came away with a slightly negative opinion of her.  She rubbed me the wrong way and was annoying at times.

I gotta be honest; I'm not sure if this is good news or not.  For me, part of the charm and attraction of the first few seasons was that the so many Arconia residents, and in a way the building itself, were integral to the stories.  The occasional well-known guest star was fun, but not really required.  Season Three bumped that up a notch or two with Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep both in prominent roles, and the story also shifted away from the building for a lot of the season, and the most of the residents were mostly absent.  Now they're adding even more characters to the cast?

I did enjoy Season Three.  I suppose the only "requirement" is that the murder take place in the building; perhaps they feel that it's time now to give the show a broader scope, a bigger feel.

Also, of the seven new cast members named in the recent posts, I don't know most of them.  I like Richard Kind, though he's not exactly an A-lister.  The rest I'm not familiar with, but it still makes me wonder why we need them when we already have a half dozen or more established characters other than our dynamic trio.

I agree.

And I assume we won't see any or most of the arconia residents, as the season takes place elsewhere. :-(

I need my Uma fix, and Howard, and the Detective! (Not an Arconian but unlikely to turn up in LA.)

It's getting to the point that even if these added characters are "brief appearances" they will dominate the season to the exclusion of anyone that appeared in previous ones.  And despite interviews that try to reassure us that the season won't be exclusively set in LA I have a hard time imagining how they will do the NY location justice.

Well I guess I will have to see when it comes out but I am in agreement that putting some episodes in LA is a put off for me. I mean the very first scene in the first episode established why NY was so unique for what this show brought. They also probably know that we will watch it anyway.

For what it's worth, Martin Short and Steve Martin were on a recent episode of Smartless, the podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes.

They talked about a lot of things, including a bit about this season of OMITB and they made it sound like the LA-based filming was only going to last a few days.  If that's the case, LA won't be as prevalent as many have feared.

I always hoped that the LA stuff was for flashbacks, giving us info on Sazz’s life and the people in it. We really don’t know much about her except she is Charles’ double.

Thanks for posting those interviews. Both were great, but it's always such a kick seeing Steve Martin and Martin Short together.

ETA: After watching both of those videos, one of Jimmy Glick interviewing Bill Hader came up. ROFL!

Dana Walden On Disney’s 183 Emmy Nominations & Commitment To Linear In Integrated Ecosystem
By Nellie Andreeva   July 17, 2024

The three most nominated programs at the Emmys this year, Shōgun (25 nominations), The Bear (23) and Only Murders In the Building (21), are all labeled differently — as FX, FX on Hulu and Hulu Originals series, respectively. But they have something in common — they all stream on Hulu.

As Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, Dana Walden oversees FX, Hulu as well as ABC, whose Abbott Elementary continued to carry the flag for broadcast series with 9 Emmy nominations, and various other television divisions of the company. Speaking with Deadline after the Emmy nominations were announced today, Walden was asked about surprises and disappointments on the list.
*  *  *
Walden took a subtle jab at the way Emmy nominations are tallied, since HBO and Max consolidated their awards presence years ago, and Netflix, along with most of the other streamers with tech pedigree, put all of their shows on a single platform. Meanwhile, Disney is represented by a number of brands, such as FX, Hulu, Disney+, ABC and Nat Geo.
*  *  *
“Clearly, it is a phenomenal day for FX. But the third most nominated show was also our show, Only Murders In The Building,” she said. “So it’s a collective effort that drives what our strategy is, which is that all of our platforms feed our streaming strategy, and many of those shows are Hulu exclusives.”

Is this Selena's first Emmy nomination?  If so, congrats!  Actually, congrats either way.

I will never understand why The Bear is considered a comedy.  I watched part of the first season, and although there were some laughs, it was without a doubt the most tense, stressful show I've ever watched.  I had to give it up.

I have to hand it to you for sticking out part of the first season of "The Bear". I had to give it up after only 2 episodes. I felt exactly the same way about it. I know people that rave about it and I'm just not getting all the love. I thought maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance but now reading your post I probably couldn't have lasted much longer even if I tried.

I like The Bear but I think you'd find that even a lot (most?) of its fans don't think it's a comedy. It's only in that category because its run time is usually 30 minutes.

Selena Gomez Finally Earns Emmy Nomination for Acting, Makes History Following Cannes Best Actress Win
By Clayton Davis   Jul 17, 2024
https://variety.com/2024/tv/awards/selena-gomez-emmys-only-murders-in-the-building-2-1236062450/

After a historic best actress win at the Cannes Film Festival for her turn in Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” which she shared with her castmates Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón and Adriana Paz, the influential superstar of Hulu’s murder-mystery romp “Only Murders in the Building” just landed her first acting nomination for her role as the dry-witted Mabel Mora, a resident of the Upper West Side apartment building, the Arconia.

Competing against Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”), Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Maya Rudolph (“Loot”) and Kristen Wiig (“Palm Royale”), Gomez is the fourth Latina to be nominated in the category’s history following Rita Moreno for “9 to 5” in 1983, America Ferrera’s two noms for “Ugly Betty” in 2007 and 2008 and Jenna Ortega for “Wednesday” last year. Ferrera is the only winner among the trio.

In addition to her acting recognition, Gomez made history as an executive producer for “Only Murders.”

Gomez’s third consecutive nomination for an outstanding comedy series makes her the most-nominated Latina producer in Emmy’s history. Only the third to be recognized in the category, Gomez follows Mexican multi-hyphenate Salma Hayek for ABC’s “Ugly Betty” in 2007 and Cuban producer Marlis Pujol, who was nominated for two consecutive years for Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” in 2020 and 2021.

Maybe they let him out of the contract since he was busy and they have a crap ton of guest stars lined up?

Most probably. I feel like his charisma and his gorgeous eyes were wasted in OMITB. Hope his new series will do well.

I think it packs a lot into those 30 minutes. It's such an intense show that I needed a rest in between episodes of at least a day before watching the next one. And no, I don't think it's a comedy. Maybe not even a dramedy either.

Thanks for the review. I haven't watched any of The Bear, and it sounds like it's not something I am going to watch in the immediate future.
OMITB is dramedy enough for me these days. 😉

I'll admit that it took me a while to warm up to The Bear because there are some hard to take aspects of it, like there are a couple of supporting male actors that can be obnoxious and yell at each other. I just don't need that. But the characters grow on you and you end up really caring about them and their lives.

It also pays to be a cook and foodie and have some familiarity with professional kitchens and how their staffs tend to work and relate to each other, although that's not really necessary.
