I see they're continuing to lean into the Vulcans = jerks idea.

Plus Pike's hair is so overpowering it can't be flattened into a typical Vulcan hairdo.

Star Trek: Stange New Worlds Season 3 Clip Shows Members of the Enterprise Turning Into Vulcans
...
While fans will have to wait until 2025 for Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Paramount+ has helped with the wait at SDCC with an extended clip of a scene from a new episode.

In the clip, Captain Pike, Christine Chapel, La'an Noonien-Singh, Nyota Uhura, and Pelia are given a Kerkhovian Serum to turn them into Vulcans for a mission. While it doesn't work for Pelia, the other four succesfully transform and remind Spock he is only half Vulcan. They quickly complete their mission, but soon after discover the serum is not turning them back.

It was also revealed at Star Trek's SDCC panel that In From the Cold's Dr. Roger Korby will be joining the fun in Season 3 as a guest star. If that name sounds familiar, it's because Michael Strong first played him in Star Trek: The Original Series.

It seems odd that the showrunners would intentionally undercut their season 2 cliffhanger ending with a comedic season 3 trailer.
Guess we don't have to worry about anything bad happening to the main cast.

The ST:SNW trailer and the ST:Section 31 trailer appear to indicate that Paramount has decided to go full tilt into making Star Trek into a sitcom.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Paul Wesley Hints At “Amazing Stuff” Between Kirk & Spock In Season 3
By John Orquiola   Published 2 days ago

Screen Rant is at STLV: Trek to Vegas, where Paul Wesley appeared in a solo spotlight panel to discuss his impressive career, including The Vampire Diaries and Wesley's taking on the iconic role of the future Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Answering a fan question about Kirk and Spock's blossoming friendship in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, Wesley was careful to avoid spoilers but offered hints of the "amazing stuff" to come in the upcoming season. Read Paul's quote below:

We have some amazing stuff in season 3. Yeah, it’s a slow burn. You don’t wanna, out of the gate, explore everything. It’s nice to have the characters slowly get to know one another, because that friendship is so important to this series. It’s really nice to [give] sprinkles and hints of what’s to come. Hints of how connected they will be, even though they could not be more opposite. Kirk and Spock are very yin and yang in a good way. But we explore that… The short answer is yes. We very much explore that in season 3. But I think we intentionally let it slowly build.

It is illogical. Romulans are genetically Vulcans. Logic and emotional control are learned. This makes it a fun show, but not maybe the best Trek.

Panel reports from Dragon Con this weekend....

Herding Cats: Next Gen to Picard

... [Jonathan Frakes] was asked what it was like to direct the live action/animation crossover episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (“Those Old Scientists”) in which characters from the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks travel back in time. Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid played their animated characters in the episode. Directing the episode was, according to Frakes, like “herding cats!” He praised Newsome and Quaid for their improvisational skill and Anson Mount’s comedic ability. Frakes pointed out that in that episode the “laws changed.” He “opened up” the production, building off of the creative energy of Newsome and Quaid’s improvisation. The rest of the cast fed off it and a great episode was born.

One of the best moments from the episode almost didn’t happen, according to Mount. During a brief chat backstage Horak said that the showrunners had approached him about being one of the “K-pop Klingons” in the episode. Mount later added that the writers had gotten a note from the network that they thought it was too much and should instead be opera, since it is known that Klingons have opera. “My response was… it’s supposed to be embarrassing. If they already do opera, why would they be embarrassed by opera? So, we had to shoot two different scenes, one as opera and one as K-pop. Once they saw it, they got it. So that’s what we ended up with, thank goodness,” Mount said.

In one of the most surprising moments from either panel, one fan asked what each person’s favorite musical is and would they sing something from it? It’s doubtful anyone in attendance actually expected anyone to sing, but after Chong answered Chicago, she went right into an excerpt of “All That Jazz,” though she noted that she wants to play Roxy Hart instead of Velma Kelly. Not to be out-done, after Horak said his favorite musical is Sweeny Todd, he also sang an excerpt from the show. Mount’s answer had three parts: his favorite musical that he’s ever seen is Sam Mendes’s Cabaret, his favorite movie musical he’s ever seen is Rocket Man, and the musical he’d most want to do is Three Penny Opera. He was being cajoled into singing from that show, but instead he sang an excerpt from Cabaret. Peck and Olusanmokun more or less refused to rise to the bait, but in the end Olusanmokun relented enough to sing a little “Poor Judd is Dead” from Oklahoma, a show that he did in high school.

...

Season 2, Episode 9
The crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise are probably among the least likely TV characters to break into song, but they put on a show worthy of Broadway when a subspace fold forces them to sing out their thoughts and feelings. It’s great, goofy fun, thanks to strong vocal performances from Celia Rose Gooding’s Uhura and Christina Chong’s La’an — and a surprisingly spry boy band number from a ship full of Klingons.
