Not unlike The Big Bang Theory, I have to tip my hat to everyone involved for putting together a very good season finale (coming after what were both better seasons than they've had recently). Dry Phil at graduation was probably my favourite part, "this is tearing my apart inside" but mostly everything worked. Claire playing with the kid at the gymnastics center was peculiar, but Gloria's dialogue acknowledged it. I like when they chose to play her with some nuance. Jay, you big softy.

I can't see how they're going to get a lot of run out of this but I really enjoyed and laughed a lot during the pilot. Forget Martin's dialogue, his freaking deadpan expressions while staring at Nan (Nam? Not Actually Molly) were exactly what I needed. Do you think Martin chewing up Nan's Sorels were a nod to Molly's typical footwear? Should I just go watch Fargo Season 1 another time?

S04.E19: Your Honor / S04.E20: The Slaughterhouse
Traveller519 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Indeed, "Basic Bitch" actually. They've been bantering some "modern slang" back and forth the past few weeks. I doubt either of them truly understands what Cuck or Snoflake means. Actually I'm pretty sure 80% of the people who use those don't know what they mean. -
S04.E19: Your Honor / S04.E20: The Slaughterhouse
Traveller519 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
I love my some Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but there's a reason the show is a half hour. I'm finding the back half of these hour blocks start to fade for me, not because of show quality but just repetitiveness of comedic beats. But that's all on Fox programming, nobody who has anything to do with the show. All of you can keep Jamon-in -
Endings can be tough. Even exceptional shows and especially comic books struggle with them. I don't fault this episode because it did what it needed to do and the arc was so strong, but the wrap up felt.... lacking. I wish we could have seen Elena tell Mack that the way to honor Hope would be to live his life, which seems to he the decision he made. I wish the final Aida showdown had been shot better and followed some scene logic (where did Fitz and Simmons come running in from to witness the final showdown? How could Aida, with all her knowledge and power, not detect Simmons was an LMD in the locked room? When in her 36 hours of life did she take the time to identify the smell of copper to know that's what blood smells like?) I wish all the teamwork involved a little more teamwork. But all in all this whole run was so good I loved the whole story. Great season, AOS!

One thing I appreciated about this week was how much of it was shot in daylight, or high level light (by Gotham Standards). While I enjoy the theme, it was nice to get a good look at a bunch of these people. Jim's morning ritual (makes his own coffee!) followed up by getting confronted by Oswald and Bridget right outside his front door was not only a good sequence but filled with light!

Kent throwing shade has been tremendous. It's amazing how most of the social awkwardness he possessed previously had been replaced with unwavering annoyance for Jonah. No time to humor your own eccentricities when you need to care for the worlds most undeveloped congressman. I get why Ben is comfortable with a job without much at stake or responsibility, but I won't be surprised to see Kent try and go grab something more lucrative and stimulating.

I liked the payoff with Seefood ultimately becoming and anti-dickpic algorithm. The casualness with which Lorie defined it's work, then her recoil when Monica said Periscope had a "Dick Problem" is why I love her character. That said, I'm ready for Jian Yang to get cast back to the background, his character works in limited doses at best. I think building the new Internet will deal more with Gavin's eccentricities than much malice. This is everyone's second or third time through all of this, so I'm going to be disappointed if Gavin has sneaked some clause into the agreement that lets him run off with all the IP. There's no excuse for Richard and Jared to not have anticipated that and specifically reviewed for it.

John's low-key "cool" gets me everytime.

So much packed into this week, but Richard's roller coaster ride with maturation was the unabashed highlight. The capper on the phone with Jonah was terrific.

S42.E20: Melissa McCarthy / Haim
Traveller519 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Saturday Night Live
While Melissa and Alec have done good work this year, I haven't enjoyed how they've overshadowed the cast. I'm sure it sounds like a petty quibble, but I wish Che had gotten to say "Live from New York..." He doesn't do much sketch work, so having that opportunity given to Alec, who's done it all season sucks in my book Some good stuff with the rest of the show. The mothers day monologues are always sweet. And getting to take a cast member backstage was cool. I did laugh when Alec poked his head out of the quick change. Amazon Silver was pretry great too. But nothing will top the Amy Schumer parents computer therapy sketch for me on old people and technology -
I don't know if anyone puts as much effort into their end of season action sequences as Hawaii 5-0 but that topped last year's Honolulu pursuit. Even the green screen work was well done by TV standards. The tension during the off loading (when did they have the time to custom build that rig?) Was palpable. Danny wearing the hat at the party was exceptionally cute.

Life In Pieces - General Discussion
Traveller519 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in Life In Pieces
Oh Gus Grimly, when will you learn that you only go confessing your crimes to someone you put in the hospital if they're obviously totally over the moon for you? (apologies for the Fargo reference) Definitely better than last week. Matt and Colleen's segment saved the show. More of them like this please, and less of the hysteria. Hoping the show recovers from its sophomore slump next season. -
S10.E24: The Long Distance Dissonance
Traveller519 replied to TheOtherOne's topic in The Big Bang Theory [V]
Everyone involved is capable of making an excellent sitcom when they set their minds to it, and tonight was the perfect example. No one was overly cartoonish, the whole cast acted on character, the sentimental moments felt earned. And mostly, everyone looked like they cared. Even Riki Lindhome brought the weight, she wasn't as over the top as her first showing, and seemed like a genuine person who had interest in Sheldon. I really enjoyed her interaction with Raj at the cafeteria. Bernadette was the other standout tonight. Her take on the whole situation was great, and throwing herself between Ramona and Sheldon on the couch, then being the first one to break up the march outside. She may not understand Sheldon, but she cares about her friend.- 120 replies

The Goldbergs in the Media: That's Incredible!
Traveller519 replied to Stinger97's topic in The Goldbergs
Goldbergs renewed for two seasons. Happy for everyone involved. However, this season has been the first that I've felt some signs of the show starting to run out of steam. 6 seasons will put them squarely into syndication territory, and I hope that's enough to shut them down. Haley and Troy will both be 25 by that point. It may be tough to continue justifying them in High School... -
As someone who appreciates alone time, I empathized with all the adult characters except Cam this week. I'm also very glad that while Gloria was appreciative of what he did, she shut him down from patting himself on the back given how some of the events shook out. Now, Phil and Claire, I know this is going to sound rough, but with Luke graduating high school there is no reason your children still need to be living with you. They are all adults now, you are free and clear to tell them they need to be self sufficient. They're always welcome in your house, but they no longer live there.

I hope we're not getting an extended run of Marvin living with them, unless they're (and I will break down in a puddle if this happens) going to send Pops to a farm up-state. I know Erica's supposedly leaving for college, but I'll believe that when I see it. As much as I like Dan Fogler, and the Marvin character, he works in limited capacity best. The fact that he popped up in two non-Thanksgiving episodes this year, and the show managed to make Thanksgiving jokes out of those was excellent. Playing the maraca for the song may have been the best thing Geoff Schwartz has ever done.

For as emotional as this episode was, it sure delivered some excellent comedy. The sign of a show that really has its hooks in me. Junior's memo to himself killed me, "I will break the cycle!" It works so well because of how they've built up the Andre and junior dynamic, then following it up with pops taking it out on Andre added to it. "You're going to be my mom's new uncle." "I get that" I do too gents, that's how we wound up with Denise Faria reincarnated as the Royal Baby.

Did Yo-yo interact with Hive? I think given the timeline she was there, but I can't recall if she actually dealt with him. Could be a little overwhelmed if he comes rushing in to save the day. I hope no one else goes back into the Framework, but that our heroes that are in there, get their send-off by helping Yo-yo and Mack out. I pray that Mack's time since seeing the Framework glitch forces him to realize it's not real. I think it will be Ghost Rider to bring her down, which I'm okay with in the confines of the show. But I would really enjoy seeing Wanda contain her.

S04.E17: Cop-Con / S04.E18: Chasing Amy
Traveller519 replied to Tara Ariano's topic in Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Those were two strong Holt episodes, one as a central character and one in support. His love for the 99 is heart warming. I wish more senior leaders fit his mould, which commands respect, but gives it back just the same... unless... there's an opportunity to be petty. Boy can that man jump on it. He carries a grudge with the best of them. That phone call to Kevin! The sheer humanity! Charles versus the Survellience-bot kept paying off, from "New Partner???" to, " Her? Oh, he's replacing Amy, I don't have anything to worry about" -
I felt the least invested in this episode of all that have been in this run, but it still had good elements and I've loved the arc. I think it was the fact that the stakes just didn't feel as high now that they're outside the framework. Credit the show, I could feel the oppression during the previous three episodes. Even with Talbot crashing the party and Ophelia's powers, there's a certain freedom that comes with being back in the real world. I agree that Mallory Jensen was fantastic again. It's basically the fourth character she's played on the show. And Iain continues to knock it out of the park. But my favourite moment was when Simmons iced Ophelia and Fitz and wore the pain and relief with a hint of smug on her face.

Amid the crazyness, and among the quality production, Gotham does some exceptional storytelling through its visuals at times. The best example of this tonight was in the steel mill (undisclosed as to whether it's part of Sionis Industries). Everyone else is using proper equipment and tools to handle the crucibles, but Bridget is calmly handling hers, including putting it into the furnace, with her bare hands while she talks with Oswald and Ivy. That gently reminds us of her Strange-enhanced powers, and sets up her grand exit from the mill without additional questions. On the other hand, I've completely lost track as to whether Butch should be alive, or at all sane and lucid, at this point... but he does continue to show up

Before Rocket's need for "family" was overtly fleshed out by Yondu, I liked the little things we saw. Obviously we saw in Volume 1 how much he cares about Groot, but the impact Peter's music had on him also served as a nice framing device for the music in the film. Before the opening battle, he's the one rigging up the music, which he tries to pass off as something he's doing because Peter likes it. Then prior to the Ravager escape, he asks them to put on some of Peter's music. The Rocket of a year ago (in the movie's timeline) wouldn't have gone to such lengths, but it's obvious how much Peter's music has influenced him.

I do think Monica's smartest play here would be to say, "Laurie, thanks for giving me this assignment. It looks like Ed bought into this play sight unseen, but when I did my due diligence, there's nothing there. I don't have anything to work with here." I did like how we got playoff from the new office space, though. I'm glad they circled back on that.
