  1. Looking back over the season, while there were many good bits in-between, I think you could really sell someone on the series by showing them the pilot and the finale. The two strongest episodes in my opinion. There was some necessary character development, and understanding why Jared was so spun out, but even coming into the last episode if you know the premise of the algorithm you can put together the pieces. I know the pilot is on YouTube in full. HBO getting the finale on there too may actually get some good returns for them.
  2. I was disappointed we didn't have Diedrich Bader's character there smirking during the debate. Thornhill has really mastered the art of talking in a long comfortable fashion without saying anything.
  3. When living in Australia I always felt like Tony Abbott represented the caricature of Australians that most seem to want to avoid. A white, arrogant, bully concerned about his physique and detests immigrants. I left before the last election (and the Labor swap in heads for the second time). I get the impression, and perhaps Ms. Sherlock can confirm, that most Australians just felt completely at a loss between their choices of government, and Labor's continued ability to exasperate people during the previous 5 years lead to the Liberal support. Also, I always enjoyed the primary political parties. The "Liberal Party" is the right-wing party and the "Labor Party" is spelled in the American fashion.
  4. Oh my damn. What a perfect way to end the season. It had a bit of the "everything works out tin the end"-ness of Entourage there that was in the pilot, but I think that's as much a Sitcom trope as anything. I did have a slight tic about the 3D video, but apparently he coded that one in his EDM induced session. The meat of the show was incredible from the Jared Pivoting to the Optimal Dick Jacking efficiency discussion to them breaking down the door. The show definitely had it's growing pains to set up the plot in this first season, and there was a notable missing element with Peter Gregory for a couple episiodes, but they finished strong.
  5. Thanks for that. I like a lot of the sentiment he proclaims about the show being close to him and it appears he has a solid plan for the show. The time setting is going to bother some people no matter what. We're too used to shows that are told chronologically (with live actors anyway). I remember being frustrated with that 70s show, when the show was in it's sixth season and they were still supposed to be in High School. But I've warmed to the approach. Exiting Season 2 it may actually give the show some extra legs. The non-chronological format could work well in Syndication. I'm hoping it does well on Wednesday Nights.
  6. Peyton Manning and Derek Jeter (as we mentioned in the live skit forum) were probably my two favorite sports hosts. The United way Skit was gold, but some of the other stuff he went through was also funny if not as memorable. The reason he's so marketable isn't just because he's a great player, but also his charisma.
  7. Not to dig up old topics, here, but I was doing some exploring and saw this title. I was hoping that we were going to get a cameo from Tim Sharpp as Joel McKinnon Miller (Scully) played Marshall's Dad in the Parents Day episode. Netflix binge watching occasionally has its benefits.
  8. The Louis CK and Kevin Hart appearances over the last 2 years have shown how much fun the show can be with comedians. I'd like to see more of them. Has Sarah Silverman been blacklisted? I wonder if NBC would have the guts to put Colbert on during his time off between The Report and The Late Show, or if CBS would let him go if he was asked. Right now @midnight has the market cornered on the mid-tier stand-ups. But I'd also love to see what a Brian Reagan, Jim Gaffigan, or Hannibal Buress could do.
  9. I don't recall the Stevie Nicks' Fajita Roundup, but I do remember Derek Jeter's Taco hole on the Jeter hosted episode in 2001. Most of those sketches were Jeter playing Jeter, but Taco Hole made me laugh. I still have the mp3 kicking around on my computer.
  10. Kind of predictable. Well foreshadowed with all the Club talk the past two weeks but it served it's purpose fine. I got a kick out of Alex recording the sight gags of Luke and Manny. She got to be the devilish one for once. Alex is the most interesting of the child Characters to me. I thought her therapy episode this season was spectacular. I'm hoping for more quality storylines for her next year. I hope this is the end of the Haley/Andy stuff, but I seriously doubt it. A comfortable season all in all, sort of par for the course for a 5th year sitcom.
  11. I keep enjoying the show more and more. He finally seems to be finding his groove which admittedly is tougher to do when you're only on once per week. That said the show is still keeping up a frentic pace. It comes hot and fast for 11pm on a Sunday. Finding the right pacing without commercials is something they're going to need to work on. The "And Now" bits are great but they're still content. A little bit of fluff won't hurt when it finds it's place, maybe with a correspondent or two. But I get the show needs to basically establish it's credibility right now. You can't have Andy Daly come in and review movie trailers or Norm MacDonald highlight the week in Sports lowlights when you're trying to establish your voice.
  12. It almost feels like there are too many "Kermits" with the current cast. That is talented enough folks who can also play the straight man to the zaniness going on around them. But if you lose the Kermit, the whole show would fall into a dis-jointed mess. It was pointed out over at TWOP but the thing about the recurring sketches is that they're now feeling like they go beat for beat with the same process and jokes. I love the Porn Stars and Shallon, but every time they air it's basically swap in that week's host change the focus piece (luxury product/safety worry) and go. Why don't we take the Porn Stars to a trade show where they're looking at multiple products and not understanding them? Or have Shallon square off against a teacher (or my dream sketch of Shallon vs. Beck's AT&T guy where nothing is getting through). I know the show is a grind for everyone every week and recurring sketches help facilitate getting things done, but when semi-original and fund stuff is cut in favor of another installment of Girlfriends Talk Show it reeks of blatant favoritism to some writers and cast members over those that are out there trying new things. I'm not expecting a new skit every week centered around a featured player, but if they spend a couple weeks refining a bit I would hope it would get more opportunity than being released the next day on hulu, which I cannot legally watch from Canada.
  13. Iceman the Later Years Ten or so years ago when Val Kilmer was hosting. Will Ferrell and Chris Parnell playing straight men to Kilmer's Top Gun character, now retired from the Navy and a commercial pilot.
  14. Gweilo What part of Australia do you hale from? I lived in Sydney for 2.5 years and while I barely remember any of the actual plot of this episode I did spend a lot of time watching the background and letting the setting tug at my heart strings. It was a wasted opportunity, but was also basically a 22 minute Qantas and Tourism Australia promotional vehicle.
  15. Great wrap-up to the season. I'm excited to see where we go from here. A.J Michalka definitely made some progress with her character too. Lainey was sort of the typical disposable best friend character early in the season, but she got to do some worthwhile development in this episode. I hope she and Barry continue a weird relationship from here on out. And I'll admit, I think this was the first episode where I realised Lainey and Lexi Bloom were different people. Oops!
  16. John has been one of my favorite standups for the past couple years, since I saw him at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2010 mere hours removed from his Trans-Pacific flight. But the trailer has me worried too, it's laugh track humor and the characters appear pretty one note, even with Martin Short, Nasim Pedrad, and Elliot Gould. And why is he performing standup in front of the set at the end? Is the show going to be about him making a show about his fictional life in the actual show? Ow!
  17. I know the conflict is necessary for the show to give people something to do other than run things day to day, but it feels like the gaffs and controversy Selina is being layered with would be difficult to overcome in a presidential election. Maybe it's still early enough days that she can dig out of the hole. So long as the jokes keep landing I'm happy. Danny-Wa!
  18. I found this article in the National Post. Mike Judge says he won't be recast but they chose to write around the character in the interim while they decided what to do. The episode thread isn't really for speculation but I suppose there are a couple options. At the very least this episode really displayed Monica as quite the capable business manager which will allow the show to flow for the meantime.
  19. I liked this episode, it was a bit lighter and mixed the struggles with the triumphs well. It showed just how successful Richard can be when he gets out of his own way and gets things done. Leave it to Erlich to not leave well enough alone and continue pushing for bigger fish. I'm not sure when this show was recorded but considering Peter Gregory was absent due to exotic vacation. I'm wondering if that's how the show is dealing with Christopher Evan Welch's passing. I'm disappointed we lost his brilliance so early into the show.
  20. As unbelieveable as the car kidnapping scene was it was great physical comedy. I enjoyed the segment because it was so off the wall and different.
  21. I was glad to show them actually making some progress on the software. Towards the end of last week I was getting a bit restless that nobody seemed to be working on the actual product. I appreciated the early stages of setting up the business aspects but it felt like things hadn't really moved forward in 3 weeks. This episode started down the same path when Dinesh and Guilfoyle out looking for Chuy with Erlich. But at least had Jared address some of that head on, but it still felt a little tedious. At any rate I'm glad to see their making progress. Regardless of that pacing critique the jokes are still landing across the board so I'm happy.
  22. I'm kind of getting the sense that he is, unfortunately. He doesn't appear on the promo poster for the show. It almost seems like the "what do you do?" storylines reflect the writers inability to write him a good plot.
  23. I've heard multiple say they worry that those outside the Tech Industry won't be able to relate to the show. I have never had any dealings with the tech industry other than giving them money for my devices. but I love the business model aspect of the show. It clearly captures the pains of any start up for the "idea-man" and shows what the process is like once you get past that "Shark Tank" pitch. It's one frustrating obstacle after another. I'm hoping we'll see an episode where Dinesh and Guilfoyle get flushed out individually. Right now their scenes/dialogue is really based off of bantering with the other, but Dinesh is still one of my favorite characters.
