S01.E10: Christmas Wishlist
Winston Wolfe replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in A Million Little Things
Right?! I wrote a comment last night but didn't post it. It listed two of my pet peeves: TV drivers who spend more time looking at their passenger than at the road, and TV doctors who casually disregard HIPAA because some random stranger says they know the random patient the doctor just spent five minutes with. The whole "driver looking at passenger" thing on TV drives me absolutely bonkers. Damn near every show does it, by all rights there should be hundreds of auto fatalities on the tube. I'm a great driver with almost 40 years experience behind the wheel and its all I can do to drive and hold a conversation at the same time. Yeah, I don't get it either. When you're 20-odd years out of college life, jobs, spouses, and kids take over. Time with your circle of friends has to be planned and coordinated. Seems like these folks get together every. other. damn. day. based on the condensed timeline. Totally unrealistic. And the character with the least amount of airtime (Katherine) we see at work the most, and even she has time to hang with this crew. Last week this show seemed to be coming around, now its back to the same old crap. My mom died exactly one week before Thanksgiving 37 years ago. I haven't really been able to celebrate the holiday since, don't even try actually. -

I hate it when people ask if they can cut. It puts people on the spot and makes the asker seem like they think they are more important, that their lifes and their wants should come first. Wait your turn dude, you ain't all that. I've had people lean out their car window while cutting me off and say "hey I'm in hurry" - well aren't we all? What makes you so special? Gary thinks everyone should behave and feel a certain way and when they deviate from his ideals he acts like a hurt, spoiled child. Even worse was playing the Cancer card. IRL most Cancer patients/survivors wouldn't want that kind of sympathy. Even though Gary is kind of popular on this thread, his sense of entitlement is really starting to grate. Also, of all the adults on this show, only Rome/Regina (and oddly enough Katherine) aren't above one asshole-ish act per episode. -
They were too busy talking over each other. They didn't even know what they were saying! She was slurring her words while chewing her cud - DISGUSTING! Man. I'm out for the foreseeable future. As much as I like Joy and Sunny, this show is a crap-fest consumed by a shit storm. Most of us who have to work for a living also have a sense of professional pride. If the panelists and TPTB went back and looked at the last week or so of shows, they should all be embarrassed - even those not guilty of bad behavior. I'll miss you guys, but I just can't with this show anymore. Will just fill the 11:00 am to noon slot with holiday movies for the rest of the year and see what else is out there come January.

Acknowledged. Still can't give BW a pass though. If she looks at this daily shit storm and is still ok with it....I don't know. And even if BW isn't what she once was, mental faculty-wise, you'd like to think someone close to her might comment on what those hires (whether she had anything to do with them or not) are doing to her legacy. Good, bad, or indifferent BW will always be associated with the View. By her own admission, Whoopi's a bit of a pig. We've all heard her wonderful anecdotes about flatulence.

Sorry for your loss. Yes, it's difficult, but it doesn't mean you get free rein to be an asshole. We both dealt with it, and moved on. A couple of days ago the discussion turned to how people associated with Trump run the risk of losing the public's respect. Then I thought about the View. Despite her quirks, I always respected Barbara Walters as a ground-breaking journalist. The View factored into that perception. Then the show hired Sherri. And Elizabeth. And now NutMeg. I really can't "see" BW the same way now. Those hires say things about her - and the showrunners' - collective judgment that I'd rather ignore, but can't. On another note, if NutMeg gets any bigger, she's going to explode. (I can say that as a hefty guy myself). She reminds me of Totie Fields sitting at the end of that table, looking like a barrel.

TH is now my second favorite Superman behind the legendary Christopher Reeve. Dude has totally nailed the part. Now that its been pointed out a couple of times I see it too. Wonder if there is/was some off-screen friction between the two. GG and MB have a wonderful brother/sister vibe, though. Funny thing is, I almost didn't recognize Alex at first. It's always amazed me how some women can change their hairstyle and look like and entirely different person. Not Kara, however. Really would have liked seeing how easily Brainy disposed of the giant robot (Amazo?) when the others working in concert couldn't. Loved Brainy as more of an action hero though.

Man, in my head I can hear Diggle reciting "In Brightest Day, in Darkness Night, No Evil Will Escape My Sight..." Still not feeling this Crossover, but I now understand why LOT wasn't included. Perhaps this whole trilogy can be salvaged in tonight's Supergirl episode. Lots of fan service in this year's event, a lot of it you don't even see coming. Have to admit I too let out a little yelp at the "World's Finest" comment. One of my favorite DC comics as a kid, even though I was a die-hard Marvel fan.

Oh, boy. Run gas station man, run! Yep, run as fast as you can, GSM. His encounter with Delilah reminds me of an old country saying: "everything's that's good to ya ain't necessarily good for ya." Agree with many here that this was the best written/acted episode of the series. If they can maintain at least this level of quality, the show might have an outside chance of making it. Before this show, I'd only seen Ron Livingston in Search Party, and he was lights out there too. Excellent supporting actor, not a lead, but he makes every scene he's in come alive. So far he's been used perfectly in this show. Re: Gary - I get the feeling that he was dealing with some kind of pain/grief/unhappiness even before the Cancer. The happy-go-lucky thing he's been doing prior to this week really seems like denial/over-compensation to me. Lord help me, Shady Ashley is starting to grow on me. She reminds me of Tony Almeda from 24 in a way, somebody so shifty that even when they're telling the truth, it still seems like they're lying, lol. I think she actually knows what the "Barbara Morgan" deal is all about. As always, Romy Malco kicks major butt. The expression on his face during the depression conversation - when his dad turned on the water, it looked like Rome was half expecting poppa to pour the pills down the sink too, it wasn't just some of us. Definitely enough in this episode to keep me sticking around for awhile longer.

NutMeg is a spoiled little snowflake that's about two decades away from adulthood. This is what happens when you let children sit at the grown folks table - they just aren't prepared to handle it. Which begs a question I've kind of asked before - even though the show is called the View, do we really need two GOP Conservatives on the panel (even though Abby seems to be trying to re-invent herself as a moderate)? Staying away from politics as much as I can, the two of them still represent what most of the Country does not. I'm not saying conservatives don't deserve a seat at the table, but there's always Fox News. I never find DL Hughley funny, but he once said whenever Fox News is on his TV, the whole house physically shifts to the Right.

The next time NutMeg does this, Joy's only response should be "Little Girl, you've got one more G-D time to tell me what I can and can't say out of my mouth." Being from basically the same generation, I'm sure Whoopi will fully understand the cultural relevance. The next time Megan has one of those outbursts, I'd like to see her chair empty after they return from commercial because the showrunners have given her a time out. Embarrassing her in that fashion may be the only was to extinguish this behavior. She may even quit the next day. Reading all the passion here has inspired me to send a link of this thread to ABC, if that's ok. ETA: Even better - if anyone knew how to get this thread to Joy and Sunny I think it would be great. They both seem to take their jobs seriously and would probably be very interested in hearing how a representative sampling of the audience perceives their product.

After his time at Y&R, I have to wonder if Billy was looking forward to GH as a fresh start with an interesting character and is pissed off at how things turned out. If he, Kelly, and Steve are all ticked off because no one is getting what they want, it's actually kind of ironic - neither are the viewers. If anyone ever asked me to name one single thing that is wrong with GH the answer would be simple: for the last 15 years or show this soap has been all about what the show runners (and sometimes actors) want and the fans are just a necessary evil.

Same here. It was great that previous crossovers ended with Legends because that show's writers always brought their "A" Game to the table. Actually it does seem like J'onn is being used more, but is just as ineffective as ever. Not only was he unable to shut Manchester down telepathically, J'onn couldn't even figure out where he was. Speaking of Manchester and his gadgets...where does he get all those wonderful toys? And the two sound alike as well. Funny aside - a set of identical twins work at a store I've frequented for years. One wears glasses and the other doesn't - that's the only thing that keeps me from confusing their names.

And there's also Lena to consider. Lena herself was recently attacked in her own office because Mercy Graves was able to hack Lena's security system long enough to gain access (since Mercy herself had designed the system). So Lena would also be at risk if Supergirl's secret identity became public knowledge, since even without the anti-alien movement, there would still be scores of criminals who would be out to get revenge on Supergirl through any and all of her loved ones. There's something to be said for those points, but Lena's and Catco's offices seem to be attacked pretty regularly as it is. I guess SG's coming out as Kara Danvers would only increase the frequency.

Actually that looks to me like a shout-out to John Byrne, who re-created the Superman mythos in the late 80s. IIRC, it always bothered Byrne how some super-heroes could fly without any type of explanation. So with the X-men, he established that Rogue flew by generating a force greater than gravity. When he took over Superman, Byrne stated that Kal-El flew by "sheer force of will," which is what Kara appeared to be doing tonight. It really was a cool use of her powers! Manchester Black is the most interesting character in this Universe. He's kind of like Batman - always prepared for any contingency, even stopped Kara dead in her tracks. Dude needs his own show, for real. Did anyone else think that Kara had flown into the DEO just to reveal her secret ID in light of Ben's comments? The whole "I can put my loved ones at risk" trope doesn't work here. Other than her adopted Mom, those closest to Kara (James, Alex, J'onn and Brainy) can all pretty much fend for themselves.

It's probably from Haley's goodbye cake!! Well, it has to be said - does this mean poor Kiki was a victim of...death by chocolate? I'll be here all week folks! And please, remember to tip your waiter!

Wasn't sure where to post this, but since Neil DeGrasse Tyson is a periodic guest star on BBT, I thought the Board might be interested in this: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2018/11/two-more-women-accuse-neil-degrasse-tyson-of-sexual-misconduct/ Aaargh...I guess he's not just pretending to be a creep. Bummer.

S01.E08: Fight Or Flight
Winston Wolfe replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in A Million Little Things
This show really does have a Thirtysomething (ABC melodrama from the 90s) feel to it, doesn't it? That had been bugging me for the longest time, what does this show remind me of? That's it, pretty folks in their 30s with unrealistic problems, all set to the backdrop of pop music. Except this show isn't as good as Thirtysomething. Man, I really do miss Brothers and Sisters, that show really nailed how to do friend/family melodrama featuring this demographic. The casting was superb (Sally Field, Rob Lowe and Emily Van Camp!) and it was almost always well-acted. -

I never got on the "This is Us" bus, and thought this show would be a good alternative. The concept is great, but the writing truly sucks. As other posters have noted, these characters behave in ways no normal humans would. Other than the fact that most of them relate really well to children (a television rarity, IMO) they have very strange social skills and priorities. And I have to admit, I had forgotten who Ashley/Shady Secretary was until coming over to these boards. I actually thought she was a per-diem bartender, lol. Was that weird, or what? "Friends?" Katherine, those people barely seemed to tolerate you because you were with Eddie. If you have no other friend options outside of this circle, things might not be going well. Eddie is a lost man-child. His friends know this and don't seem to be able to bring themselves to tell him. Other than how good he is as a father, Eddie doesn't really seem to have any other redeeming characteristics. -
That being the case, GH has been killing off young women longer than I remember. Definitely not cool, although I had no particular affection for any of the characters you mentioned.
-
-
As another poster commented, this show has a really bad habit of killing off young women - Kristina Davis (Alexis' sister), Georgie, Siobhan (Lucky's late wife), Disney Princess Sabrina, Courtney, and so on, almost like they were disposable spare parts. Even though Siobhan McKenna was a human plot point, her death at the hands of Anthony Zacharra always bothered me, because there was such a prurient aspect to it, the character really seemed to get such satisfaction from needlessly ending the life of an innocent young woman. This didn't happen so much in "Old School" GH, every once in a while a peripheral character, like Alexandra Quartermaine in the Ice Princess S/L, would be sacrificed for dramatic effect and to advance the story. Most of these recent deaths seem to be so gratuitous and unnecessary, IMO.
-
If not for the strong accent I wouldn't have even recognized her. Agreed, seeing her like that, in that setting, was a real downer.
-
It's alright. I actually know what's going on with this show, and I'm still confused.
-
I've always thought NLG was a competent actor. But man-oh-man, in the space of a week I saw her in a mid 90s episode of 7th Heaven and last week's 2000 re-airing of GH and she literally hasn't aged a freaking day.

As a black man living in the northeast (with southern roots), I never got the "black folks love fried catfish" television trope. Must be a bayou thing. Most of my seafood-loving relatives in NC, SC and GA are all about the whiting (or as we pronounce it "whiteys"). I've tried fried catfish on a few occasions and found it much too gamey. Different strokes, I guess. I absolutely agree with you. They need to phase out that family and retool the show. They need to build the series around Cedric and the rest of the cast that play his family. They are such wonderful actors. His wife on the show is especially good. I think this is a show that's going to take one, maybe one-and-a-half seasons to find its groove. So far it's been a little hit-or-miss, aside from the instant chemistry between Beth Behrs and Tischina Arnold (that CBS is trying to quickly capitalize on). If the show hasn't begun to congeal in the next 5-10 episodes I might be among those moving on, much as I like Cedric.
