  1. I did, when I was learning to bake. I was around 10, and making sugar cookies. I can see it happening with Trixie, cooking in an unfamiliar kitchen, and trying to make so many new dishes, and feeling frazzled from the effort. I'm glad she was able to laugh about it! It was beyond rude for Sr. Monica Joan to invite herself, and make Trixie figure out how to get another portion to serve. I like Sr. Monica Joan, and see that she still has good and bad days, but the sisters and staff at Nonnatus house put up with a lot from her. I am not a trained nurse, but it was years before I figured out that setting out the necessary ingredients before beginning to cook was the way to go. And to read to the recipe more than once before starting was helpful in success.
  2. Week 29: 1/5, no * YTD: 59/145 six *, two C *
  3. My weak subjects, chemistry and mythology, combined, did me in. What is ?????
  4. I loved her umbrella blouse/top, though!
  5. Hope the pupper is better now.
  6. I generally don't miss the cuts; seldom do I think they would have clarified anything. I do wish we could see the show in its entirety, though. I hope Lucille goes home, recovers, and is able to return, but since the actor wants to leave the show, not likely that will happen. So, I hope there is a line later in the season that addresses how things are for her. I was glad nature circumvented Lillian having to go to hospital for the birth of her baby. I was born in 1951, and I cannot imagine preferring a home birth to a hospital birth, but it was much more a thing in that place and time. Can someone explain the preserves? I don't remember a stash of them, or where they came from. I know Sr. Monica Joan is well known for her sweet tooth.
  7. Changing the subject, I just heard about the explosion and destruction of the Palmer candy factory in West Reading, PA. So far, two dead. Thinking about the human loss, plus loss of business during Easter candy season. So sad.
  8. Week 28: 3/5, one * YTD: 58/140 six *, two C *
  9. I first thought Bond, but every movie has its own theme song, so then I moved to Pink Panther. Waffled a bit but stuck with Pink Panther.
  10. My second grade teacher had a trap door spider story she shared with every class she taught for years, and had a sample that was the actual trap door she had dug up.
  11. I knew Holbein thanks to Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Cromwell. Looking glass didn’t come to me because I was trying to think what a mirror on a stand like that was called. For FJ, I got stuck on Dr. Strangelove instead of Catch-22.
  12. I remembered reading the story {shudder}, but couldn't recall the author. I'd visited Canterbury and the Cathedral a couple of times, so FJ came pretty quickly. I didn't get Ben Stiller's "joke."
  13. Week 27: 2/5, no * YTD: 55/135 five *, two C * YTD 40%. Arghh!
  14. That's who that was! I knew he looked familiar, but couldn't place him! When Grover came out of the house the first time, I wondered who the new girl was! I'm not usually one to criticize long hair, but his is a bit too extra for me. I like the idea of Calvin and Marty teaming up with the new business idea. i'm old, but pretty computer savvy. With new apps, they aren't always that intuitive to use the first time. He probably should have checked out the ones he'd be using, but since he was newly back to college, that's not surprising that he wasn't familiar with them. And a bag of sharpened pencils - love it!
  15. Week 26: 3/5, one * YTD: 53/130 five *, two C *
  16. Did they figure out Mavis also killed the surfer? Was the reporter/“journalist” an ex-wife or romantic interest? I didn’t think ex-wife, but not sure.
  17. Sam was included in a family group e-mail. Really nice that Pete’s family includes her as family, too. Pete died long before many advances in medicine were common, and wouldn’t have known that his grandson would benefit from modern medical practices. Poor Jay! Not remembering his creation after Flower’s influence, and Trevor, Flower, Sassapis were no help.
  18. My first thought on FJ was Southampton, but that’s not a state capital. Then I went to Portsmouth, and couldn’t go beyond that. I’ve been to both of those in England, but I’ve also been to Dover.
  19. In the early 70's, when passage of the ERA and the feminist movement was very much in the news, I asked my grandma, born in 1893, about when women got the vote, what she thought, did she vote when she could. She said she didn't remember about that time. My mom would have been around six at the time women got the vote, so my grandma would have been a young mother at the time. She had been a school teacher before she married, but had been a homemaker all of her married life. She generally didn't understand the women's liberation movement, and didn't approve of it. I really wish she could have told me more about her life at that time.
  20. I knew Mudd. Booth’s alleged killer, Boston Corbett, lived not far from my hometown in Kansas. In 1887, he was appointed assistant doorkeeper to the Kansas House of Representatives, but he was involved in an incident in which he believed he was being persecuted, and brandished his weapon. He was declared insane and put in a facility, but later escaped. How his life ended is unclear. More than you wanted to know? I knew several of the others, like Katherine Johnson, Malala, and gorge.
  21. I loved this episode! Interesting hospital plot with a good resolution. Robyn and Dante knowing something was up to make the lead officer so anxious to go in, and good for her being able to call in a favor to discover the reason behind it. And I loved Aunt Vi taking Dee to the old school restaurant, only to be disappointed because the traditional recipes were no longer on the menu. I admired her ability to recreate the dish, and her willingness to help out with the recipes. I'm pretty sure Dee's father won't get full custody, or if he does, it won't stick, but not looking forward to the drama and angst a custody battle will no doubt bring.
