  1. I knew Holbein thanks to Hilary Mantel’s trilogy about Cromwell. Looking glass didn’t come to me because I was trying to think what a mirror on a stand like that was called. For FJ, I got stuck on Dr. Strangelove instead of Catch-22.
  2. I remembered reading the story {shudder}, but couldn't recall the author. I'd visited Canterbury and the Cathedral a couple of times, so FJ came pretty quickly. I didn't get Ben Stiller's "joke."
  3. Week 27: 2/5, no * YTD: 55/135 five *, two C * YTD 40%. Arghh!
  4. That's who that was! I knew he looked familiar, but couldn't place him! When Grover came out of the house the first time, I wondered who the new girl was! I'm not usually one to criticize long hair, but his is a bit too extra for me. I like the idea of Calvin and Marty teaming up with the new business idea. i'm old, but pretty computer savvy. With new apps, they aren't always that intuitive to use the first time. He probably should have checked out the ones he'd be using, but since he was newly back to college, that's not surprising that he wasn't familiar with them. And a bag of sharpened pencils - love it!

  6. Did they figure out Mavis also killed the surfer? Was the reporter/“journalist” an ex-wife or romantic interest? I didn’t think ex-wife, but not sure.
  7. Sam was included in a family group e-mail. Really nice that Pete’s family includes her as family, too. Pete died long before many advances in medicine were common, and wouldn’t have known that his grandson would benefit from modern medical practices. Poor Jay! Not remembering his creation after Flower’s influence, and Trevor, Flower, Sassapis were no help.
  8. My first thought on FJ was Southampton, but that’s not a state capital. Then I went to Portsmouth, and couldn’t go beyond that. I’ve been to both of those in England, but I’ve also been to Dover.
  9. In the early 70's, when passage of the ERA and the feminist movement was very much in the news, I asked my grandma, born in 1893, about when women got the vote, what she thought, did she vote when she could. She said she didn't remember about that time. My mom would have been around six at the time women got the vote, so my grandma would have been a young mother at the time. She had been a school teacher before she married, but had been a homemaker all of her married life. She generally didn't understand the women's liberation movement, and didn't approve of it. I really wish she could have told me more about her life at that time.
  10. I knew Mudd. Booth’s alleged killer, Boston Corbett, lived not far from my hometown in Kansas. In 1887, he was appointed assistant doorkeeper to the Kansas House of Representatives, but he was involved in an incident in which he believed he was being persecuted, and brandished his weapon. He was declared insane and put in a facility, but later escaped. How his life ended is unclear. More than you wanted to know? I knew several of the others, like Katherine Johnson, Malala, and gorge.
  11. I loved this episode! Interesting hospital plot with a good resolution. Robyn and Dante knowing something was up to make the lead officer so anxious to go in, and good for her being able to call in a favor to discover the reason behind it. And I loved Aunt Vi taking Dee to the old school restaurant, only to be disappointed because the traditional recipes were no longer on the menu. I admired her ability to recreate the dish, and her willingness to help out with the recipes. I'm pretty sure Dee's father won't get full custody, or if he does, it won't stick, but not looking forward to the drama and angst a custody battle will no doubt bring.

  14. According to a wiki article, in the mid-1860's, the idea of gifts in a grotto or cave began to appear, thus Father Christmas would be in such an area whilst the children told him what they wanted, etc. The story of Eva was inspired by the mother of a Playtime Executive Producer. She was Jewish, experienced being evacuated and learning about the Christmas traditions that she was unfamiliar with. I object to the title though; in England, Happy Christmas is much more common than Merry Christmas, at least in my experience.
  15. Did you mean Matthew Crawley? Patrick was the fake relative who died on the Titanic and (he claimed) survivor disfigured in battle. Matthew died in the car crash after his and Mary's baby was born. That episode aired at Christmas in the UK.
  16. DD visited the Bovington Tank Museum in England with family and friends this weekend. I told her about the FJ clue and how I missed it.
  17. I’d put this in off-topic if there was one. PBS on Facebook published Mrs. Hall’s shortbread recipe recently. I made some this week. Pretty good!
  18. Week 23: 0/5 YTD: 46/115 four *, two C * No idea on most of them this week. I knew jaune would be yellow, so I tried to think of a National Park, could only think yellow river, but that didn't lead me to Yellowstone!
  19. Yes, to me, 1969 = Viet Nam. 1st husband was stationed in San Diego in 1972 or thereabouts, for Naval training, so I lived in SD for a few months. He wasn't associated with fighter jets at all, so Top Gun didn't occur to me. I did see both movies. I knew someone in high school, late 1960's, whose brother became a Seal, so if Seal had occurred to me, I (like to think I) would have remembered they predated 1969.
  20. I don’t usually watch this show, but I watched last night because Eden Sher and Neil Flynn, daughter & father from The Middle, were on. Conflict between Lopez and Steve (Flynn) was absurd and not in a good way. I like Mayan, but the two dogs and kids were the best part.
  21. Week 22: 2/5 YTD: 46/110 four *, two C *
  22. I always thought the TV was in a sitting room downstairs. Now I’ll be looking for scenes in the TV room.
  23. Update - what I did. On Thursday, I went to Mall of America between airport arrival and hotel check in. I pretty much stayed near the East Ramp. Fun to walk around and window shop. I ate at Bubba Gump's for lunch. A bit pricey, but it was a treat to have shrimp at lunch. Friday weather was bitterly cold. Started around -13f. That was the day I planned to sightsee, but I just couldn't make myself go out in those temperatures. Around 3 p.m. I went to El Loro in Eagan for late lunch/early dinner, very near my hotel, but I drove there. So I spent most of the day in my room, reading, watching TV, and napping. On Saturday, I went to Doggie Depot at the Union Depot. So many dogs - it was so fun! Lots of vendors, too. Flew home Saturday evening. So not the trip I planned, but it's OK anyway.
