  1. Apropos of nothing, I missed this episode because of my own mother playing with the remote, which she loves to do, and inadvertently canceling the recording before it aired. I have no proof, but I am pretty sure that's what happened because it was set to record. It appears that it just so happens to be the episode where they show more of Rebecca's decline with dementia, so... touché mom?
  2. I haven't seen the show, but this always seems to happen when the fathers have a bit of money.... I will never forget the two ditzy daughters on Dateline (whose mother miraculously survived) and they were nearly giggling when discussing their father's infidelity towards their mother, saying something like "Daddy, don't do that". And these were grown women. Blech.
  3. I wasn't going to watch, but started coming down with a migraine so I took something and tried to find a distraction.... I have stayed a bit away from true crime shows recently but this seemed to be the only thing on network tv. I had seen Elle Fanning on one of the late-night talk shows promoting the show, and she said something about Michelle being painted as "one-dimensional" that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Michelle's own struggles with mental health do not absolve her of the role she played in this. If I were the judge I would have given her the 20 years. Needless to say, I have no interest in seeing the show Elle was promoting. Don't have hulu and do not have plans to get it anytime soon anyways.
  4. Oh, FFS. People can really be monsters sometimes.
  5. I know people complained las season but I had no problem because of the hair and even facial hair styling. This season, though, I struggled on the first episode because they no longer had those differences. There was something about Anthony’s face, though, that reminded me about one of my own cousins so I latched onto that.
  6. Personal opinion alert: For me, in all the years, there will NEVER, EVER be a better Oscars moment than Sebastián Yatra singing Dos Oruguitas. I thought it was a beautiful, heartfelt interpretation of a most beautiful song, made more meaningful by the fact that it was sung in my native language. The English version is good, but the Spanish version is much more special to me, and does have that timeless feeling Lin mentioned he was going for. I was grinning like a schoolgirl throughout, heart aflutter. The icing on the cake was the couple dancing. Bravo!!!
  7. Good choices. I did love Sarah Bareilles' "Smile", which I am now realizing was from the 2014 Emmys. Though I did wish it would have been a straight out song without voice inserts in between. By the time they got to Robin Williams at the end, my misty eyes turned to full-on tears. Anyways, the point being, just do dignified song or instrumental piece, show the people you're supposed to be remembering, and call it a day.
  8. Yes! Complete disappointment for me. They had announced the first live performance of the song, so I was envisioning something along the lines of this Spanish version (these are kids from a theatre school in Chihuahua, Mexico), but with costumes and Hollywood magic. If those kids could do such a great job, surely professionals with an Oscars budget could blow the roof off the place. I was wrong, because this? Was not that. ETA: How did the Oscars butcher this so badly? You’re gonna hype up the first live performance of this song and then just not... sing... the song?
  9. Have not finished reading the thread, but you beat me to it--the only way I would accept Will being invited back to the Oscars would be to have him sit there in listening to comedians roast him for a full five minutes (with a couple of strong security guards for good measure). Him needing to sit there smiling with his rage brewing inside might make his head explode. I used to be a fan. No more. Glad I did not get around to buying his book I was planning to buy.

    Encanto (2021)

Saw a commercial for the Oscars this Sunday and the announcer mentioned the first live performance of "We Don't Talk about Bruno" and I, for one, cannot wait. I won't be home so I will be dvr'ing it, but thought I'd share it for those who would be interested. You're welcome.
  11. Ha! Also, so true đź‘Ś Felt the same way about ER too--stopped watching fairly early on and did not understand the adoration. Kept waiting for it to end and it felt like it went on for millenia...
  12. Beat me to it. Clear as day as she was, I wouldn’t put it past either Kevin or Randall to try and steamroll as things get tougher. She needs to have all her preferences stated with power of attorney and advance directives.
  13. In some ways I prefer that; there were instances in the past where you could clearly see people trying to pack in like sardines. On the other hand, you couldn't have spontaneous moments and whatnot. If I recall correctly, there was the time Meyl Streep kissed Mark Ruffalo. I'm sure there are other examples but that one stood out (also, Mark's adorable reaction).

    Encanto (2021)

Fun fact: The overlaying of lyrics/harmonies at the end of Bruno’s song is called—wait for it—a madrigal.
  15. I enjoyed the second red chair story, especially Graham's reaction.
  16. Right—missing but thankfully alive. Apparently bio parents lost custody (no explanation for that was provided). She had been reported missing in 2019. Both bio parents were arrested… A policeman noticed something “odd” about the staircase, in grandfather’s home, no less. Policeman then used the flashlight and noticed a blanket (it’s been very cold over the last couple of days in New York). They had been to the house before but people in the house would deny having seen the child. Not much more was provided.
  17. Not sure if this belongs here, but I saw this on the news and thought it had Dateline all over it. Custody issues are always a mess, but the fact that they put that child in a staircase makes me think they won’t be winning any parenting awards anytime soon. I hope she gets access to the care that she needs now – get the child into therapy as soon as possible. Oy, meant to post this in general gabbery but my iPad is acting up.
  18. I watched the first episode and really wanted to like it, but nope-not gonna be a fan anytime soon. Too much back-stabbing (including an actual stabbing). Seemed a little Jerry Springer-ish as well. I prefer shows to be a bit more evergreen—this ain’t it.
  19. Damm. May those monsters still be burning in whichever circle of hell is considered the worst.

    Encanto (2021)

Well, I loved this. And yes, there are two songs I want to listen to outside of the movie--"We don't talk about Bruno" and "Dos orugitas" I mean, from the first verse I fell in love with Dos orugitas. Watched it in English and then in Spanish, and discovered more little details on second viewing.
  21. That was revolting. As was the killer’s version or “retelling” of that night.
  22. Yes. Painful to watch, at every turn—all the small but consequential decisions that led to his tragic end, and then the galling lack of accountability; people twisting themselves into pretzels to try and justify the murder of a child in the face of overwhelming evidence. And the knowledge of how it all turned out.
  23. If you are interested, here is a conversation between Will Smith, showrunner Marissa Jo Cerrar, and Jay Z.
  24. Wow. He looked about 12 to me when he first started, and still looks like he has not aged much. Takes me out of the storyline.
