  1. You're not kidding, the new kid looks like what you'd get if Ryan Kelley and Ian Nelson had a baby together.
  2. Didn't her automatic drawing in Season 3 clue everyone in that they were looking for the Nemeton, and thus set in motion the sequence of events that allowed them to rescue Sheriff Stillinski, Mrs. McCall, and Chris Argent? Other than that I don't recall any upsides for Lydia or her friends, although of course from a dramatic standpoint her banshee powers allow for the frequent discovery of dead bodies without having to employ ridiculous contrivances, and for the surprise resurrection of snarky evil werewolves when Gerard Argent's Shakespeare quotations got to be too much to take.
  3. For my part I'd just as soon they not answer the question definitively. The show has done such a good job with Peggy's platonic relationships, I don't feel a pressing need to explore her love life aside from the knowledge that she eventually marries happily. Plus, anyone they use for that storyline would necessarily suffer in comparison to Steve.
  4. I don't see Dr. Fenhoff having much difficulty convincing Russian spymasters or Dottie to do whatever he wants.
  5. From that link, Travolta's defense of his creepiness: Does anyone buy being blown away by Goldie Hawn's stunning beauty as Travolta's excuse for acting weird? Now if he'd run into Chris Evans or Channing Tatum backstage, maybe...

    Lucy (2014)

How can one differentiate that from how Johansson acts in every other role?
  7. Sadly, even Julie Andrews can't do the things she used to either. But Lady Gaga did a better tribute to The Sound of Music than anyone could have without use of a time machine to bring 1960s Julie Andrews to the stage. I've enjoyed her music for years, but I had no idea she was capable of that good a singing performance.
  8. My belief that Redmayne deserved his Oscar win was underscored by Cumberbatch not being a good enough actor to plaster a convincing smile on his face when the camera cut to him after the winner was announced.
  9. Kavan Smith is my go-to Hey It's That Guy. Basically flip to the Lifetime Movie Network any day and there's a decent chance he'll be there playing someone's boss or sleazy boyfriend.
  10. Aside from the richer characterizations and more competent acting, one thing I notice Agent Carter being far better about is logistics and grounding the show in the real world. Yes, there are out-there elements like Acme'sStark's collection of improbably explosive devices, but the workplace is a building in Manhattan, the people have actual homes to go to, restaurants they frequent, and they have to cover the intervening space between locations when following leads. Contrast that to AoS's magic invisible VTOL plane that requires no maintenance crew or refueling, their clone-operated secret bases, the fact that almost all of the characters have no routine contact with normal people living in the real world. The handwaving away anything that might be an obstacle or distraction from the characters doing their self-assigned secret agent missions makes the whole thing seem like a shallow adolescent power fantasy.
  11. If those aren't up to the task on their own, Coppola's Dracula will seal the deal.
  12. Sally Field's breakdown at Shelby's funeral in Steel Magnolias always gets to me. When she goes from screaming WHY to trying to get control of herself with that clipped "No! No! No!" it just rings a lot more true to grief I've seen than simple crying.
  13. If people need a thirtysomething actress to play a teenager, why not hire Crystal Reed? She's good, and can believably play more than a decade younger than her actual age.
  14. It makes the movie more palatable if I pretend it had a subversive agenda of quietly undermining patriarchal movie tropes. Jor-El used his technology to build the rocket, but it was Lara who did the real work of being the first Kryptonian in ages to undergo natural pregnancy and childbirth so that their son could be born free, and she was the one who saw Zod taken down and brought to justice. Jonathan Kent got the lip service as the supposedly wise father figure spouting instructions and even unnecessarily throwing his life away to underscore his wonky philosophy, but Clark clearly took after Martha's example of caring for people and quietly helping them rather than living his life in the uncaring isolation Jonathan advised.
  15. It's a popular opinion arrived at via unpopular route, but as a lifelong comics nerd who's mostly been frustrated by poor adaptations, I am more than thrilled that Marvel is making movies which both get the adventurous spirit of the source material right and are a huge hit with the masses. It feels great for the shoe to be on the other foot for people who once pointed and laughed at the silly kids' movies while touting the virtues of "adult" fare like movies about football and police engaging in car chases. Don't recall any of those making half a billion dollars lately.
  16. I was just about to say, Julianne Moore's movies push that plot point so stringently there's none of it left for other movies. Sorry directors, but Moore is not enough of a goddess for me to think her characters should be forgiven any wrongdoing and worshiped unconditionally. Though I doubt even Tilda Swinton or Sigourney Weaver could have made me root for those particular characters.
  17. I told friends the other day that I was saving all my "please renew this show" mojo for Agent Carter because I get more entertainment out of it than all the other network primetime shows I watch combined.
  18. We'll have to agree to disagree on those points. I've never found any of his productions or directorial efforts worth the time spent watching them.
  19. At that point only Peggy and Howard knew what the thing was, and its container was too bulky to slip in a pocket. Yeah, Ming Na is the only actress on that show who's the equal of Haley Atwell, and her character is severely underwritten in comparison to Peggy. Tell me that Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas have taken over from Joss Whedon's less talented relatives as showrunners and maybe I'll watch.
  20. I have my doubts about a crew member being more in the know about a show's fate than the showrunner. If the hints were coming from NBC corporate maybe, but a set designer or cinematographer isn't going to have the inside info.
  21. I do not want anything with Michael Bay's grubby little blasting powder-covered fingerprints on it coming near the MCU.
  22. Are we sure there will be two more of these movies? Unless it pulls in Marvel superhero movie money I don't see how they'll be able to recoup the advertising budget - I literally cannot turn on my television or open a magazine without seeing something about it.
  23. I was thinking maybe he's Gabriel, and acting out of the same motivation that Tilda Swinton's version of the character was in the movie. At this point it's pretty clear the Rising DarknessTM isn't what it was in the comics.
  24. Agreeing on the Eliza Coup love, Denise was really the one part of AfterScrubs that I liked. I loved when Dr. Cox said “I'm gonna go ahead and give you a pass, because you have murder eyes."
  25. Maybe what Tyrese saw was Beth astrally projecting from a gunshot-induced nap in her shallow grave? I hear New Agey types are into that sort of thing.
