  1. Couldn't resist sharing - my half-Greek (on the other side) son at the 2012 St. Demetrios festival. His Papou grew up in Boston, son of a cobbler.
  2. As is their right. But what are they doing on cooking competition shows?
  3. According to my cable guide, it will be showing again on Wednesday and on Friday.
  4. Season two hasn't started yet. The episodes they're showing now are called "Nate and Jeremiah Home Project - S1 on the Move". This is getting more common on HGTV. Other shows do it as well to fill in between seasons. They revisit past episodes, often with a different name, and labeled as new - so our DVRs are picking them up: Home Town - Memory Lane My Lottery Dream Home - Scratch Offs Married to Real Estate "in a look back"..." House Hunters Monday night themed double episodes There have been others, can't remember them all right now.
  5. I got a chuckle from the Boston to Palm Beach Gardens episode. House Hunter - "I'm wearing my Florida shirt!" Agent - "In Florida, we just call them shirts."
  6. I was really happy to see a Costa Rica episode filmed around Lake Arenal, because that is the part of the country where I have spent time. Houses one and three were not far from the little village where I stayed. But that is not what I came here to say! I had to stop and get a picture of my TV screen when they showed this: Because every time I visit one of these fascinating forums, this ad is popping up on my iPhone screen. Mystery solved!
  7. News from Seattle. In case you were wondering how Ellie's business is doing. "Ellie shared that running a small biz has been extremely stressful. She’s experienced staff shortages, rising costs (which results in higher prices that she doesn’t feel good about), and other challenges that led to exhaustion & an untenable future. She feels more help is needed from the City, such as grants & financial support. Ellie’s worked in the bar/restaurant industry for a long time & lived in a lot of neighborhoods, and says she’s so grateful for the support of the Central District community. While it was a very difficult & emotional decision to make, Ellie is selling the business, which will likely still be pizza (but perhaps more upscale) - and it’s unclear if the new owners will keep the Central Pizza name."
  8. Fortunately, I had checked my scheduled recordings. There was nothing scheduled for this timeslot. So of course I then checked the guide on my DVR, where it showed that old episode. I figured it was just mis-labeled, and the correct episode would be on at the expected time. But since I had set my DVR to only record new episodes, it wouldn't let me add that one. So I had to time-travel back to "appointment television" days and watch it live.
  9. She used another made-up word. Can't remember what it was. Maybe you're thinking of the episode of original House Hunters that aired just before this - the woman talked about painting a room "celestrial" blue.
  10. Until there is a thread for it - more media coverage: https://www.csmonitor.com/The-Culture/TV/2022/1202/How-Alfred-Molina-found-his-superpower-in-Three-Pines
  11. i've read all the novels so far, am in the library queue for the latest, A World of Curiosities. This just popped up in my FB newsfeed, Louise Penny is coming to town! It would be cool to see her. And here is a Vanity Fair interview with Louise Penny about the show. https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/11/louise-penny-three-pines-show-gamache-interview?fbclid=IwAR2lZRrbwnAZspEiym2CnAfi5OUuLtyQrRHkRBKwvNe3tB6zplyhL0CdIuY&mibextid=Zxz2cZ
  12. Wondering whether to watch this on Christmas night? Ask yourself, WWJD?
  13. If you are looking for a single family home in my ZIP Code, you'd better have at least a cool million to spend. The lowest priced house listed for sale currently is on the market at $1,025,000. A modest 1000 SF rambler, 3 br 1 ba, built in the 60s. Most of the "entry-level" houses are tear-downs, the developers get to them first.
  14. The reality of the horrors of indigenous boarding schools makes watching these episodes extremely challenging. It has certainly been a topic of great concern here in the Pacific Northwest. I was gobsmacked when I saw this story today - I had no idea some of the schools are still in operation in the U.S. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/dec/17/native-american-school-indigenous-students-suffered-future-hope.
  15. I'm a big fan of the books. I've only watched the first two episodes so far. The village doesn't look the way I pictured in my head, although I think the interiors are great. And I'm fine with the casting. I am awash in Christmas music right now, so I really pricked up my ears during the choir scene. Quite unusual to hear a choir singing Greg Lake's I Believe in Father Christmas. One of my favorites, with a bit of a dark side. "The Christmas we get we deserve". Hmmm…
  16. I have noticed a number of versions of this comment. I watched the last two years' holiday episodes featuring celebrities I had never heard of from shows I had never watched - and I was so glad I did! Both were wonderful episodes. The contestants were charming and delightful, had a great rapport and support for each other. Some of them were pretty decent bakers, and the ones who weren't put in a great effort. It made me want to watch both of the shows. It seems to me that not wanting to watch someone you've never seen before is like not wanting to taste food you've never eaten before.
  17. Any other fans of GBBO here? 2018 winner Rahul got married a few days ago. Here's how he described his Indian wedding: "Bengali weddings are more than just a wedding, it is the celebration of the union between the bride and groom, and their families as well as friends. It is the dream of not only the bride and groom, it is the dream of our parents, families and friends, a celebration of positivity, love, kindness. So, most of the direct and indirect families of myself and Shreya gathered to celebrate the wedding. Any Bengali wedding is full of hundreds of beautiful rituals, some of them are religious, some social, and some are specific to some families. There might be a lot of rituals and traditions, but the heart of any ritual is the wellbeing of the bride, groom and their future."
  18. Maybe on days they don't work? For me, that is every day! One of the benefits of retirement - I begin every day with an hour of fresh air. I head out to my (covered) patio in my PJs (with additional layers as required). Hunker down in the comfy Adirondack chair with a few treasured companions - coffee, newspaper (old-school print), and the birds. A habit I started in March 2020, when the world closed in on us. Its a great tonic.
  19. I went on an Audubon birding trip to Guatemala. We were in the Highlands region - staying at coffee farms surrounded by forests and volcanoes, and in small villages on lake Atitlán. Over 50% of the population of Guatemala is Mayan. There are over 26 indigenous Mayan language still spoken there. The Mayan culture was front and center everywhere we went. It was fabulous and beautiful. Here's a sign from one of the trails, in Spanish and Mayan.
  20. I'm still trying to wrap my head around this adopt-the-nephew plan. Does the child have a mother? Is she married to Usman's brother? Does she have any say in the matter? I am envisioning a wide range of possible scenarios. At one extreme, sympathy. Perhaps Mohammed has so many children that he cannot provide for them all, and it would break the parents' hearts, but they would let him go to live with Kimberly in the U.S. in hopes of a better life for him? At the other extreme, part of a long con. With or without the cooperation of the child's mother: "In many Nigerian patriarchal cultures, women bear and raise children but the children ‘belong’ to the man. This is hinged on the overarching principle of customary law that denies a mother’s lineage and strongly upholds patrilineage." In this case, I really hope the whole thing is just tomfoolery from the producers, needing to juice up the storyline.
  21. Heads up, anyone who has Comcast/Xfinity cable. Nov 22-28 is FREE TV WEEK. And it includes Acorn TV. Plenty of time to catch season 10 of Doc Martin! Right now, seven episodes are available. I hope the eighth and final one will be added Monday.
  22. Just watched (don't judge me!) One Delicious Christmas - one of the Food Network tie-in Christmas movies on Discovery+ . Came here to share that the resolution of the plot in this holiday food romance revolves around the love of the classic s'more .
