  1. Same. The pursing of the lips can be weird, but more power to her for the look itself. Dark lipstick can be difficult to pull off, and she wears it well.
  2. Welp, so much for Selasi keeping his cool. His panic made sense, though. I figured Tom winning SB last week would help keep him safe. But when it came to the showstopper, Selasi's won out between the two. Tom's "sandwiches" looked downright unappetizing. It wasn't like they were sloppy, but the piped mousse somehow resembled macaroni of all things, poorly sandwiched between two slices of bread. Yuck. Looks like his creativity ended up being his downfall. But like Rav, Tom knew his time was up and left gracefully. Andrew is adorable. I'm glad he won, and definitely didn't see it as an entitlement thing. Honestly, none of these showstoppers seemed appealing to me (I hate fruits mixed in my food) but the were all pretty creative. Well, Benjamina's was a plain looking mess, but I lol'd at the judges going for another taste. Apparently it was that good! Glad she didn't get axed. I noticed that, too! I felt bad laughing because it was also zooming in on sadTom's face, but it was so randomly hilarious.
  3. Selasi is such a crack up. Only he can calmly tell Sue "I just don't know if it's underbaked" while posing like a GQ model on the floor. I wish I had an ounce of his chill. As much as I liked Rav, he's been skating by for a long time. But good on him for leaving with a smile. Wish him luck in the future. I read a post a while back stating that the contestants are being given less time than what they need. Could that have been why the showstoppers weren't actually show stopping? Candice's was topsy turvy to the point of looking sloppy, Jane's watercolor-style flowers were all smeared, and so on. Selasi had the best looking showstopper, but I think they gave it to Tom because he finally managed to blend his flavors properly.
  4. Sadly, I think that's the standard for all reality shows now. Chopped, America's Got Talent, The Wall, this list goes on. They all have to have some sympathy angle to win the audience. It really isn't necessary. These are contestants, no one is giving them the money, they have to win it. Why do they need to pile on the schmaltz? The sympathy ploys always ring false because everyone is doing them now. And ugh to the weepiness at the end. I know this would never happen, but I want someone to just flat out say when they're asked about why they're on the show: "Because I want money."
  5. Would appreciate some feedback: it's all well and good for the girl that they got her heart started again, but what about her brain? Would there be any real brain activity after being clinically dead for that long? I was cleaning during the show and don't know if I missed the part when they mentioned that.
  6. Sterling and Ron deserved the nods. I'm ok with Milo, but not Chrissie. Her performance is OK, but the reality is that Kate and Kevin's plots are flimsy and don't serve either actor very well. I think the writers botched Kevin's plot more. Him starting at the bottom of the barrel of his acting career after his on-air meltdown would have been more interesting than his slew of girlfriends, only one of which made an impact. Who cared about bitchy actress or boring ex-wife? At any rate, while I do think Kevin and Kate have had strong scenes, they were too scattered in the course of the season, and weren't enough to warrant acting nominations. Honestly, if anyone on the cast got jilted, I would say it was Mandy. She's got a tough job. Rebecca is easily the most unsympathetic character in the show, but Mandy still manages to keep her human and relatable. They just waited too long to make her seem like a person and not a harping bitch. And it's really bad when you compare Rebecca to Jack, who was practically perfect in every way, save for a barely-there drinking problem and a possible-but-not-quite wandering eye. I'm a fan of Brian Tyree Henry (PaperBoy!) and Denis O'Hare, but those nominations do feel random. That said, I'm fine with the show itself getting a nod. Love it or not, it's one of the biggest hits of the new season and had people talking from the pilot. I think the nomination is deserved. But the second half was much more treacly and manipulative, and if they continue with that, I don't see the This Is Us getting this kind of attention next year.
  7. I liked the ending to exchange student in Rome episode. He seemed to have a good head on his shoulders. He clearly wanted the bigger apartment, but he was practical enough to know that he would need a second job to pay for it, and that would interfere with his studies. Akee made the right choice.
  8. It doesn't help that Carrie (Andie McDowell) had no real personality to speak of and viewers were just hoping that Charles and Fiona would ride off into the sunset. And I usually hate the "falls for the best friend at the last minute" trope, but I would let in go in that case. Still don't understand why Charles fell in love with Carrie, and I still don't get why they were so averse to marriage. I think romcoms are in a state of flux because studios aren't investing or promoting them anymore. They used to be easy money, but now viewers are flocking to superhero films, franchises, and sci-fi. I feel like studios dub anything that's good as the second coming of the romcom because they're desperate for a hit. So I'm not surprised about The Big Sick. Good for Kumail and all, but I'm not rushing to see it. Love & Friendship was a big critical hit last year, but sadly made little money. I really enjoyed Sleeping with Other People and How to Be Single. The latter gets a lot of flak, but it was harmless movie and fun. One of my all time favorites is Jump Tomorrow with Tunde Adebimpe. If highly recommend it if you get the chance.
  9. I saw him in Tour De Pharmacy and he was pretty funny. As someone who was Orlando crazy when he was first popular, I can admit he's not the greatest actor, but it looks like he's found his niche. I think he's content where he is, at least for now. Even though he's not the prime focus in the media anymore, it must be a relief to have some fun with his career for a change instead of being the Next Big Thing.
  10. If you mean the trolls from Frozen, ITA. They were jerks. Like that "Fixer upper" song? "So, our boy's a piece of shit, but hey, you can totally fix him up!" You could tell they were desperate to have him married off to a fellow human and not a troll, but did they have to use such a mean spirited song to get that point across? UO: I am so sick of biopics. At this point, I don't care who's starring in them. They're just a blatant attempt to win an Oscar, and it's embarrassing.
  11. Regarding Steel Magnolias, I remember Emma telling Shelby to adopt, and Shelby said no judge would give her a baby with her medical record. But honestly, I don't think she wanted to do that, anyway. Shelby really wanted a baby that had her and Jackson's genes ("the baby will have his looks and my sense of style", she had said) and I doubt she looked very hard into adoption. I remember a lot of people being mad about that portrayal of diabetes being a basic death sentence. The HIV topic is interesting, because I can't think of any major motion pic in the past decade that focused on it. The only exception is Life Support, an HBO movie with Queen Latifah that was based on a true story. And that was in 2007.
  12. MTE. Isn't the whole point of Jumanji was that the game brings the horrors of the jungle to our doorstep? Otherwise, it's just another generic action flick set in the jungle...which is pretty much what this looks like. I'm not surprised that they would update it (like a video game instead of a board game) but this just looks disappointing.
  13. You can send your unwanted Oreo Thins my way, because I love them! Perfect ratio of cream to cookie. Especially the mint versions.
  14. Co-sign on Tesla. I think he would be a great subject. The anthology concept works a lot better than just focusing on Einstein.
  15. Not a bad finale, although I haven't seen all the episodes. Since they're making this into an actual series, any word on season 2?
  16. IA. I don't always like her flavors, but the simplicity of her gingerbread design got major points from me. The piping was on point. I felt bad for Louise, but the judges made the right decision. Val and Louise both had disasters, but you could at least tell what Val's display was supposed to be; Paul even complimented the Statue of Liberty design. That couldn't have been easy to do. But Louise's church was a just a white, gloppy mess. It looked like she really piled on the white icing, which probably made the finished biscuit heavier and less likely to hold up. The walls looked pretty thick, too. She'd poorly measured her sheep biscuits, and it looked like she had the same problem with the gingerbread. So yeah, she was out. Yeah, I thought that pool table looked pretty gross. Unfinished and runny. And visually, the only bright spots in the interior were the pub stools, but everything else was so dark. Points for pulling off the whole thing, but Andrew would have won by a hair. That said, I really liked Candice trying to encourage Louise while they were baking, so I'm cool with her winning this week. Tom's was bright, but messy. Reminded me of play-doh. Selasi's wasn't bad, but he's done better. Benjamina was the same. Hers was messy, although I liked the stacked appearance of the walls in the Chrysler Building.
  17. I wouldn't have given SB to Jane. Her last bake was good, but it just seemed like a repeat of the Jaffa cake, it's just that she got it right this time. One flavor I hated was all the white chocolate. To me, it only works when it's paired with something bitter like dark chocolate, since white chocolate borders on overly sweet. Andrew not only had the best cake, but he had the best flavors, imo. When I heard mirror cake, I thought of these. Of course, this woman has been making them for some time now, but you can actually see your reflection in these, while I didn't think any of tonight's cakes had this kind of shine. I love this show. I'll really miss this cast, too.
  18. Team Howie with that acapella group. Yawn. Take off the uniforms and they were any other boy-band in the making. IA that Simon is grooming them for $$$. Although there were so many guys, wouldn't they have to get rid of some? It was like Boyz 12 from American Dad. Mel was ridiculous with that Pumpkin Guy sketch. Yeah, it was a sweet gesture, but passing off that mess as a legit contender was bogus. Dude, you can do that on a street corner and spread the same amount of happiness. The magic twins won the night for me. Clever, interesting, and innovative. That's the kind of show I would pay to see. No, it's not just you. Talk about laying it on thick. What really bugs me is that the complete lack of suspense about whether these people are going to the next round. The moment the sentimental music begins and they start telling their story, I tune out. I'm not denying their talent, it's just embarrassingly predictable at this point. Hell, the hashtags alone give it away. I thought the last kid was great, but I wouldn't have given him the Golden Buzzer, or the plane crash girl. I'm just so over the singers. I liked the Limbo Girl and the guy imitating the cartoon characters, but I can't see them getting very far.
  19. I too was wondering what happened to Yusef and was disappointed that we didn't get an update. Once Hector was murdered I thought they would somehow bring Yusef back into the fold. Also, it was like they flipped a switch in the second half because every other word from the murderers' mouths (and the abused wife) was a slur. After a few times, it was like, ok, you made your point. The ending was too tidy. I think they realized they had to wrap this thing up or else it would be a cliffhanger. This. She can be a victim of abuse and still be a racist asshole. They're not mutually exclusive.
  20. Wow, this was bad, and I didn't even watch the whole thing. Bad acting, shitty updates of the songs (that cover of "She's like the Wind" was terrible). The leads have no chemistry, and there was too much extra stuff shoehorned in; the dueling parents, the bitter wives, that awful epilogue, etc. And why did everyone start singing in the end? And that epilogue was the final middle finger. Whether or not Baby and Johnny actually do end up together, there was no need to spell everything out. It's ok to have left that alone for the viewers to come up with their own conclusion.
  21. Fun season finale. That song will be stuck in my head for days! There should definitely be more customers at Bob's Burgers, especially regulars. Bob once said the town Yellow Pages listed them as a gas station, so that could be why there aren't many tourists. But no way should Teddy be the only regular customer they have after all this time. All those nearby businesses, all those employees at the Wharf, and none of them stop by? That's too much of a stretch, even for this show. As for Jimmy Pesto, I think it's well-known that his food is garbage, but his restaurant has ambiance (or fake ambiance) and he knows how to market himself. Jimmy also has more variety in his menu. Bob makes great burgers, but that's still limited to people who might want something else to eat.
  22. It was really nice to see a normal season finale, and not a cliffhanger with someone missing/mutilated/dead/undead/on fire/etc. IA that Stephanie had a great sendoff, and it leaves the door open for her to return. I cheered when she returned with the key card. Good on her for making this decision. She's been adrift for so long and she can still help people while living her own life. Although I'm sure Avery and April are endgame, I'm still down for Avery and Maggie. April is so much better when she's not with Jackson, anyway. I really like this idea, even though I do see Meredith and Riggs staying together, or getting back together once the dust settles with Megan. That said, Meredith was nice to let Riggs go and send him on his way. Yeah, she would do the same if it was Derek, but you could tell she was saddened after Riggs was gone. He conquered his fear of fire and ends up becoming a firefighter? Has he done that already? I don't know, my history on Ben is spotty. LOL. Looks like they toned down the creepy vibes on that kid this time.
  23. Nope, I had the same problem. No dialogue, just music. Closed captioning was the only way I knew what they were saying. I don't know if it happened everywhere, though. People on Twitter were asking what was going on with the audio. Some commercials were muted, too. For me, the sound came back when there was only 15 minutes left in the episode.
  24. LOL @ the Orlando Bloom mention! Feel better, Darian.
  25. I was thinking that, too. They were so fixated on that part.
