  1. Past hour
  2. Everyone is richer than Agnes. Agnes has no money. But I was shocked to hear that he is as nearly as rich as Ada. We had no real idea how rich Ada was. In today's dollar, I'd say the Russells are likely more than $50M. The Russells are based on the Vanderbilts (and maybe a couple of other figures from the Gilded Age). I recall reading that Cornelius Vanderbilt died with a net worth of $100 million. That's billions in today's dollars. That was considered a rather unthinkable amount of money at the time. By the time his son died, which is less than a decade later, the family fortune had nearly doubled. In the first season, George had enough money to keep his company's stock from crashing after the aldermen took a short position on it. It takes a colossal amount of money to do that, and that was based on a real event in which Cornelius Vanderbilt actually did buy shares of his company to squeeze the city council members' short position. The Astors were also a significantly wealthy family, much more wealthy than most. I read that the Astor family net worth was around $50 million at the time, about $1.5 billion today. If I had to guess, I'd say most of these old money were probably worth somewhere between $10 million and $50 million in today's dollars.
  3. Seriously? As a master of the house, he can't be friends with his servants. Could George's finances be saved with Larry and Jack's money? Would it be wise from them to invest in George's risky business?
  4. Honestly, I think that has always been the case. I have watched regularly since the late 1970s, and I have vivid memories of so much. I have about 150 VHS cassettes with edited scenes dating back to 1985 and every so often I will pop one in and wonder "huh, WTH is happening" or "who the heck is that". And these were clips I purposely saved, carefully editing out recast characters and commercials. Late last year a bunch of early 1980s episodes were loaded onto YT. They are gone now (thank you, Sony). They were full episodes, so 3-4 stories were included in each 45-minute episode. Sometimes I barely recalled the secondary or tertiary action/characters. I feel the same about current stories. There are things from just a couple years ago I have totally blanked on. And I don't FF through the show or "skip it" because of the actor mix. I'm not so sure that it's the quality, but rather the quantity.
  5. He could buy a house and employ his "family" [bar Armstrong]. I loved Turner's awkward evasiveness when Mrs Fish asked how she could have ever possibly ever met Bertha's sister.
  6. T.J. Hooker (that was on ABC and CBS, w/William Shatner et al.) was one of these for me-- I had only caught bits and pieces once when it was in syndie on WHNS 21 (now FOX Carolina), and had seen one end title from it (an extended one, IIRC). After that, for the longest time, I forswore from it, because I didn't think it had anything to enjoy (outside of the main and end title tracks and sequences). Well, at the bottom of 2023, I purchased Shout!'s all-in-one DVD from Amazon, and started with the third go of it, and it became actually better than I thought (it really wasn't as bad as I had been led to believe); it held up for me far better than that (IMO, quite awful) Walker Texas Ranger w/Chuck Norris (the title track of that 90s CBS action/crime series is as far as I've gone, and as far as I'll ever go).
  7. I've never tried eel, and I have no idea how you're supposed to cook it. But being out in the wilderness, their options are probably limited. How are you supposed to cook it? Regarding the Australian woman, I don't know if she had a choice of which show to go on. But a couple of things to consider in making that choice: The US version has a bigger prize, but the competition is stiffer I would think.
  8. I just started binge watching this over the weekend. I get the references now. I feel so proud of myself! 😭 I'd watched Belgravia before, and now Downton Abbey... and it all just meshes together. Better than being homeless... possibly.
  9. Better than 50% of nothing.
  10. Today
  11. Yes, sudden success can be just as traumatic as misfortune. Jack is sensible not to make any decisions at once. He can now change his life so totally that he needs an instructor in almost all its aspects. Can Larry be such? He is hardly a man who would be content with "not needing to work any more", it's different to work fgor money and work for passion. It would be best if he he found a new passion. Until then, stydying (not necssarily formally), travelling, getting to know people in various businesses and most of all, pondering what he wants next. BTV, he can now afford to marry, hopefully not in haste. Impossible. As Jane Austen's novel show, a gentleman couldn't earn his living.
  12. Agreed. I thought it was nice to see Agnes taking an interest in having a more personal relationship with Marian, as Ada does with Marian.
  13. Thanks! Okay, BB Blockbuster, I'll try to remember that. :) It's funny, I really DO enjoy the BB Blockbuster, but boy does it mess with old school strategy. I don't mind players having to adapt to something new (especially as it is something that you can't manipulate like Battle of the Block), but it really does change the strategy a bit (luckily not a LOT).
  14. When I watched the podcast about that episode and in Dean's book, he said when this young girl comes up to him with this high voice (couldn't help that part) in pigtails, even he was taken back. There was some blowback even back then in letters but I think ML could have made Laura look older and act older before bringing him on. She had a crush like she did with most older men, Seth was recent and JJ, but he was even more mature. Seth was 19 IRL and Dean 23. She acted like a little girl with the mischievous things she did to "rivals" it was just not written well to me I get Mary had to go blind and I think he had her marry (not a fav or that) because he wanted her to have interesting stories but that could have been done without it too. Having her have 2 babies lost in miscarriage and fire was a push out the door for her and other calamities. He didn't know what to do with her marriage. It actually was illegal if you were born blind back then. He had them move 3 times and they never were happy, I wish he just let her be an independent blind woman helping run a blind school and have interesting stories there. She could date but didn't need marriage. I think Laura had to meet Almonzo but he could have set it up better and waited a bit. There was an age difference but you can find actors that look older but I don't think MG was ready for that type of acting and liked her role with Albert as a tomboy.
  15. Lady Sarah is the daughter of a Duke. Why has she not found some wealthy British merchant to marry? Same. I felt so bad. 😢 Mrs. Bauer has been the realest person in this show. 😭😭😭
  16. I found one aspect believable, and it’s that Jack felt overwhelmed and trying to clear your mind to think rationally about the next step is difficult after receiving a disgustingly large sum of money. It’s hard to describe but the best description I can come up with is like being frozen in fear, especially when he has nothing to keep his mind off of it or keep him busy anymore. I love that she’s also stubborn like Bertha 😂 I hope he doesn’t let Oscar manage his money. 😭😭😭
  17. That mid season trailer is 🔥🔥🔥 …and no 16th Amendment yet so no income tax. 🙊
  18. The BB Blockbuster.
  19. I love that it's Week 1, and we're already getting moronic volunteering for nominations. I tend to think Kelly will wise up in the morning, but who knows? Maybe she's hoping the...whatever they're calling the three-person competition now (BB Showdown?)...competition will be how many goats you can balance on yourself while doing yoga.
  20. Watching BTS with the people watching from Kobe and Emily’s house and I’m curious how this was really filmed. Maybe they will change the cast later, but if not, are we supposed to believe everyone converged in Kansas on a regular basis?
  21. A garlic vanilla slice?! Sarah's gone rogue AGAIN! 😂🤮
  22. No. That was true at one point, but the Married Women’s Property Act of 1870 and later1882 existed in England. There were similar laws in the U.S., but they varied from state to state.
  23. Dear Jack, Please keep your newly found wealth far, far away from Oscar. 🤞🏻 Do NOT trust him with your money!!! He is......
  24. The judges and their bad breath. Euwww! They're messing with Sarah's head again!
  25. Neither of them are running the house. Keanu, Rachel & Vince are in the loft discussing scenarios. It definitely sounds like Vince has settled on putting Kelley up. Also sounds like Kelley has been playing sloppy this first week in the house & would definitely go home if it's Kelley-Zae on the block at the end, while it's a bit more of a toss-up between Kelley-Amy. These people do not know how to math. There are 17 HGs, 3 of whom won't be voting on the eviction. That means they need 7 to force a tie to the HOH to break it & determine who goes home.
  26. Yeh - get quickly away with "the unpleasant things". But the duke knows that the marriage isn't valid if it's not consummated. There was a British serie based on famous couple in 19th century where a wife got annulment on that basis.
