I usually like the underdog, but as @PoshSprinkles said some of those scores were super inconsistent, so if he had lost it would have been a side-eye. AND - I like Kohei. AND i would have been team Oleg, but yes, the shenanigans kinda soured my mouth

It's possible. But his form wasn't as good either. The hop was pretty major and he was off balance after the hop. 

#NoChineseonPodium is also nice. #SamIs7th! and of course he's the highest ranked gymnasts that didn't break 90. #Sam<90!

Wow, that was incredible! So exciting and great quality routines. I sort of loved Jon calling this one, with his clear anxiety for Kohei: "this might be too much information, but I'm covered in sweat." But my favorite was at the beginning of the rotation when they were discussing what Kohei would need to do to win and how close it would be--

Jim Watson: "This is so much fun!" Jon: "This is NOT FUN." Jon Horton is not so secretly a Kohei fan, guys.

I checked the listing for what NBC is showing and it's a highlight along with more live swimming. So, I suspect it's an hour of this, 2 hours of live swimming, then back to this at 11. Again. Heck, if the US women can't rate better, I don't expect the non-medalist American showing to. 

OR, they shove it all to after 11. I forgot, divers won a silver, so they have to show that.

Looking at the event breakdown.  Kohei got the Top Score in Floor, Vault and High Bar; Oleg Top Score in RIngs and Parallel Bars; Max was Top Score in Pommel Horse.

And yes...very little of this will be shown on Nothing But Crapweasels.

Wow, that was a super tense finale. If Oleg and the Ukrainians hadn't decided to drop the team event in such a rude way, I would have been rooting for him. Regardless, there was a lot of awesome gymnastics today! I am thrilled Whitlock got bronze; he was sooooo tense waiting for the last three guys to finish their routines; he looked like he was going to burst into tears. My stomach was in knots for him!

Sad Chris Brooks dropped off in the end, but Sam ended up not doing too badly, all things considered.

I really like Simone, but I am definitely on #TeamDrama and rooting for Aly to take the gold!

What a close finish!  I don't know enough about gymnastics and scoring to know if that 14.8 for the Ukrainian guy was justified.  Seemed a little low to me, but I'm no expert.  I wonder if there was some payback for Ukraine's scratch in the team competition.

For all that people commented about how the Chinese women's team looks like they are 12... I think that Kohei looks like he is 15.

Surely there will be no coverage of this in primetime on NBC tonight.  It will be relegated to overnight, just like the women's synchro diving where no Americans medalled.  Tonight's coverage will undoubtedly be Phelpsapalooza, Men's synchro diving (since the U.S. medalled), Phelpsinsanity, puff pieces about the "FINAL FIVE" (gag), other swimmers, Phelpsphelpsphelps.  Nothing But Crap would rather do a piece about Phelps' torn swimming cap than show people from other countries winning medals when the U.S. doesn't.

Although, nice to see that Sam Mikulak didn't completely choke.  #7 is respectable I suppose.

Kerri Walsh Jennings is playing tonight too at 8pm ET so they'll show that.  Late Night coverage it is.

Ooof, Kohei looks like he's in a lot of pain (keeps wincing and holding his lower back). I hope this medal ceremony is quick!

Fun fact: they just said that it's been 108 years since GB has won an AA medal. Yay Max!

I want Simone to win, but I want Aly to perform well enough to make it a close race. There needs to be some tension in the AA.  #teamdramaforever

Me too.  Aly's floor routine was wonderful.  They're both great but I find myself pulling for Aly (maybe partly because of 2012's disappointment for her).  Good grief - I don't know how all the parents can endure these competitions.  I'd be a wreck!

This is how i would do it in my Team Drama world. 

AA: Aly. (because. Drama). 
Vault: Oksana 
Bars: Madison/Gabby. 
Beam: Flavia
Floor: Simone.

This way everyone I like gets something and that also creates maximum drama. I

Watched the men's all around which was great! Question why are the US non bulky guys so bad at pommel? For someone like Donnell Whittenburg it makes perfect sense why he is not good at it. Guys like Chris Brooks and Danell Leyva who are on the leaner side I don't understand. Is it coaching? Lack of developing talent?

To be fair, Alex Naddour is pretty bulky but still manages to be our best pommel worker by a mile. It's probably a lack of development/focus in training from an early age. And maybe a cultural thing as well? The U.S. gymnasts just seem to hate pommel horse, but are generally great on high bar and p-bars. We've got plenty of great vault/floor guys as well.

 It's kind of inexplicable; sort of like there was no good reason for the Romanian women to have been so weak on bars in the 90s/2000s when they were usually great at everything else; especially since they had a centralized national training program. They knew it was a weakness but never really put in the work/development that they should have. For the longest time the Chinese team had big problems on vault and floor for the same reason; they chose tiny, flighty gymnasts who were great on bars and beam but couldn't get it done on the power events. They've gotten a lot better about balancing their teams out with gymnasts who can contribute on vault and floor (having Cheng Fei for so many years didn't hurt either).

YES! All the #drama

(Though apparently FIG decided no ties at the Olympics which is stupid) so that can't happen. but Flavia First, Laurie 2nd. I can live with that - I just want Brazil to go ape with a medal win, and I honestly think Flavia is the one to do it).

It is one of the few consistent pieces of indoctrination Americans get in their public schools (assuming she even was educated that way).  

That said, the outrage people react with to NOT doing it is ludicrous. Like most symbolic things, if it is forced... it is kind of useless.

I was never taught to put my hand over my heart for the anthem in the evil public school system, and I was raised during the frikkin Cold War. I still don't do it. I think facing the flag and respecting it with silence while the anthem plays is plenty patriotic. 

Some people will get their knickers in a twist over anything. I also wonder if there's a racial undercurrent involved as well, especially when compared to Phelps' antics on the medal stand the other night which social media overwhelmingly seemed to think was "cute?" I wouldn't rule it out.

I just watched the livestream of the women's team final from yesterday that I missed and it was sooooo much better than what was shown in primetime! I'm glad I was able to stream the men's AA today and I'll be able to stream the women's AA tomorrow. NBC should be really ashamed of their coverage, or should I say lack of coverage, of other countries. I want to see other countries doing well and being proud of their accomplishments. I want to see the best of the best no matter where they come from!

Thanks! You are right about Naddour he was lean when he was just a pommels guy.  I guess it's comes in waves like the 2004 team were we had 2 vault specialists and we were deep on uneven bars. That changed four years later.

Wow.  The men's AA was pretty intense.  I'm still grouchy at how Ukraine behaved in the team final, but wow, Oleg is a gifted gymnast and it was a pleasure to see him perform.

Given how amazing Kohei during the team all around and today, I wouldn't blame him if he took all the event finals.  Guy (and his back/stomach) deserves to kick back and enjoy his victories.

It's sad because he's super-talented and really could be an AA contender, but he just can't seem to put it all together in one competition. He's fine if not spectacular on pommels and rings if he hits, and he's great on all the other events. It's all mental with him.
