xaxat September 6, 2016 Share September 6, 2016 Why did a studio think it was a good idea to resurrect The Mechanic? I checked Jason Statham's Box Office Mojo page and he's only had one movie starring him (so no Expendables) that made over 40 million. I liked the original Transporter, but that's pretty much the only character he can do. Link to comment

I guess his movies do well with TV rights and DVD/VOD, to make sequels worth it. Back before the Blockbuster stores went under, you'd always go there and see yet another direct-to-video American Pie sequel with Eugene Levy surrounded by random no-names. Those probably cost a lot less than $40 million, though. I also liked him in The Bank Job which is similar to the latter two movies, but more dramatic. I was not surprised Statham did well in Spy. He has gruff resting face and a lot of his roles are dour (loved The Transporter original, disliked The Mechanic), but he came off well in the Richie films. Admittedly, he was the straight guy, but there's usually an element of wryness to Ritchie's films. Statham usually comes off genial and engaging in his interviews and PR stuff as well. For an action star, he could be a lot worse in his acting range. 2 Link to comment

Not light years different, but not Frank from The Transporter either. And he was hysterically in Spy, playing pretty much a parody of the bulk of his oeuvre. I'd love to see him do more comedy. 2 Link to comment

proserpina65 October 4, 2016 Share October 4, 2016 So I can guess we can agree that Snowden is a bomb. I read some article about why, partly blaming it on people not knowing who he is. No, people know who he is, alright, but a lot of them think he's a traitor and that wouldn't have made a movie about him a good bet. 2 Link to comment

So I guess a better way of putting it would've been "a lot of the people who do know who Edward Snowden is think he's a traitor and wouldn't be inclined to go see a movie about him". 1 Link to comment

It only made $3,255,008 at the domestic box office, not its opening weekend but the grand total. Snowden is practically Star Wars in comparison! Edited October 6, 2016 by Dejana Link to comment

Man on Wire also won that award for 2008 and was dramatized in The Walk, which also wasn't much of a box office success.
